The document discusses the target audience for an indie music video. It states that the target audience for indie music is typically people aged 16-25. The survey results showed that this age group listens to and attends live indie concerts the most. It also found that typical apparel for indie music fans includes denim jackets, boots, vintage clothing, baggy jeans, hats and glasses. The document includes pictures showing how the target audience dresses in an individual style using baggy, old-looking clothes to make a statement.
3. ‘Indie’ specific to people…
Indie describes something that is independent. And this word can be used to describe a person, and
in my case someone who is indie is leaning towards the kind of audience I’m targeting. Indie started
as a nickname for obscure bands. Clothing and a ‘slacker’ fashion style came along with indie music,
with younger people (fans and the indie genre musicians) wearing ‘granddad clothes’ or showing an
aesthetic attitude of ‘throw it on and it’ll be cool’. This lazy style sort of fits with the individual style
of the music as well as it is an ‘individual’ fashion – before indie it wasn’t normal for young people to
wear old people clothes or clothes that are too big on purpose. So not only did the music give out
something independent and different to listen to, it also released an altered style and fashion for the
fans and musicians to adopt.
Survey information – some people’s answer to the final question about fan’s apparel was
interesting when they mentioned the fan mirroring the style of their favourite band (member).
4. Target Audience Age and dress – survey
conclusion
From the results of my survey, I’ve realised that the majority of people who enjoy indie music are
aged from 16 to 25. These are the age majority of people who listen to and go to see gigs of indie
music. It was interesting to see how some people don’t listen to it in their spare time but they love
to see indie rock bands live because of the live atmosphere they create.
It was also interesting to see what people said about the dress code of a typical indie music fan.
For example, denim jackets, suede, boots, dungarees, glasses, vintage & retro clothes, baggy
clothes & baggy jeans, hats & beanies, chinos, alternative.
5. Here are some pictures of how I view my target
audience… (target audience apparel)
As you see from these pictures, all of these people don’t look ‘normal’. They are wearing clothes of an
‘individual’ style that makes a small or big statement. They wear baggy, old looking, all style clothes all put
into one to make an ‘individual’ aesthetic for themselves. Mac Demarco is in fact the man in the second
picture, demonstrating how some indie musicians will dress.
