1. Proposal
The genre of my magazine is indie culture, this can include indie pop and rock. The codes and conventions of indie
music is independence. On my mood board I have included some clothing items that I believe fans of genre wear or
follow the fashion sense of such as well known shoe designers doc martens and ponchos.
I chose not to include locations where they may live as I believe they can live anywhere and don’t have a set
stereotypical location. I have included past times that they may enjoy such as guitar, listening to music on a variety
of platforms, such as vinyl records or online and going on the internet, I feel that the most used websites are social
media sites such as Tumblr and Instagram, on there they can upload images and write about their favourite
bands/musicians. I have included images of well known indie themed bands such as the Arctic Monkeys. Indie music
is often associated and played at concerts, it is due to this that one of the largest images shown on the mood board is
of a group of people ‘dancing’ at a concert in a crowd.
RECEPTIONIn my magazine I aim to follow the codes and conventions of magazines that have the same target audience of 16-24 year
old and are middle class, in the A B C1 bracket that my magazine aims at, due to my magazine aiming to appeal to both
genders I am for it to be dominant to interpret, meaning it fits easily. Due to this the tone, representation and type of
images I use throughout my magazine must fit with this defined tone and how people are usually represented. To do this I
must carefully decide how and why I am having people presented in order for it to fit in with the norm. such as the idea
that the tone is quite darkened with cover artists often holding an instrument such as a guitar and wearing a certain style
of clothes. Contents pages in magazines of this style often use light colour schemes, including images of featured articles
and a lot of text.
2. Target audience
• My audience demographic for my indie magazine is people in the A, B and
C1 bracket. I decided this demographic was most fitting as it allows a
variety of people in the higher demographics to purchase the magazine
and they seem to be the most able to purchase the magazine. I am for my
magazine to look at feel professional, meaning the price tag will be higher,
due to this people of lower demographics such as low salary working class
people will not be able to afford the magazine.
• My primary audience are individualists, this is because fans of indie music
aspire to be unique and set apart from the mainstream and feel that by
buying a magazine like this will highlight that. My secondary audience is
reformers and aspirers.
• I do not wish for my audience to feel that I am aiming for a mainstream
audience because indie, as a genre, is meant to stand out from other
mainstream genres such as pop.
