Coppola, that run parallel with the themes we find evident in other films that would be considered
American Independent films. Coppola's films work to bend the traditional rules of Hollywood
filmmaking. To begin, one aspect that American Independent films are usually void of is a very
distinct sense of closure. Often times, we find that these films don't give us the closure we need and
often times force the viewer to take an introspective view of the ending of the film. Many directors
employ methods which force the viewer to realize that the entire premise of the movie is completely

identified within the Romantic Comedy genre. In British 'RomComs' such as "Jack and Sarah" a

somewhat sentimental gestures of defeat," (Eleasser 234). This shift represented a departure from
Classical Hollywood's idealized vision of America, the films of which reproduced aspects of
dominant American ideology subject to increasing contempt among audiences. Interesting parallels
can be drawn between The Graduate (1967) and The Parallax View (1974) in relation to Elseasser's
analysis. 'The Pathos of Failure' is felt acutely in both films, not only thematically, but also in the
craft of the films themselves: non–linear, episodic, unresolved narratives and complex, counter–
cultural, marginal male protagonists, whose goals are ill–defined and ultimately unattained (Hehr
85). Perhaps the allure of these films was that they required a degree of critical engagement from the
audience, reflected by wider society's growing cynicism towards "American institutions and their
basic pillars," (Hehr 31). There is a certain comfort, I will argue, in honestly acknowledging both

When I was reading "Subverting Sex and Love in Alejandro Amenabar's Agora," I noticed how Paul
portrayed an aspect I had appreciated while watching the film Agora. As I watched the film Agora I
noticed how in contrast to the other movies we have seen in class the female character was not
defined by her relationship with men. For example, in the film Cleopatra, the female lead Cleopatra
was defined in terms of her relationship with men. Even though Cleopatra was involved in politics,

The studio system, thanks to new regulations from Washington in 1948, forced the studios to
restructure and sell off numerous assets. In addition, to stars clamoring for better contracts and the

During this lab, my partner and I had to figure out what our variables were in order to start the tests.
Our independent variables were mass, surface area, height, and the force applied. Our dependent
variable was the amount of time it took the object took to reach the ground. Lastly, our control
variables were the type of object, height, planet, force, temperature, and air resistance. We then
began our experiment by gathering all our materials for each factor that was being tested. We did
our tests several times to get an accurate answer. For some of the tests, we could not figure out
which object hit the ground first, so we used an app that recorded the object falling. The app slowed
the video down, so that we could see which object fell first. We then recorded our results on a piece
of paper. The purpose of this lab was to test the different factors that affected a falling object. The
factors that were being tested were mass, surface area, height and force applied. We achieved this

to consider Habermas' theory of the public sphere.
Habermas defines the public sphere as "a realm of our social life in which something approaching
public opinion can be formed." "Access is guaranteed to all citizens" (1974, p.49). It is Habermas
theory that the public sphere helps to facilitate the rational communication of public affairs
independently from the government and state.
Similar to the paragraphs on the mass media and contemporary democracies Habermas himself
backs up the point of the mass media negatively affecting the democracy.
He argues that commercialised media in the new public sphere have turned the public sphere into a
place where advertising is prioritised (Habermas, Lennox and Lennox 1974). A point that backs this
theory up is the way the mass media influences television in a political way, as it is deteriorating the
public sphere (Hart,1994). This opinion is key in the context of explaining the public sphere theory
as it helps to highlight a key point in the modern democracy.
