The document discusses plans for a music video that tells the story of a teenage girl (Kate) in an abusive relationship. It describes choosing Kate and her boyfriend Ryan because they are teenagers to make the story more relatable. It outlines costumes, locations, makeup and hair styles to distinguish between her dream world of an idealized 1950s relationship and her real-world abusive relationship. Lighting and props are also discussed to emphasize the difference between the dream and real worlds and communicate how the relationship makes her feel. The goal is to raise awareness about teenage domestic abuse.
2. Kate - Robyn
- We wanted a youthful
looking artist as our target
audience is teens, so we
thought Kate was the
perfect person as she is
youthful and is a young
teen herself. Therefore it
is easier for the target
audience to relate to her
as they are of similar age.
- It was also important to have
someone young as there
isn’t many teenagers in
the charts, only young
adults, therefore the artist
is something new and
different.

3. Ryan – the boyfriend
- We needed a teenager to make it
convincing that the artist was in
a relationship with him. If we
had chosen someone older
than it may not have been as
convincing
- As both Ryan and Kate are of
similar age, we decided Ryan
would be perfect for the role
- We also thought Ryan could
transition from roles quite
easily and be convincing for
both the abusive partner and
the 1950’s perfect husband

4. The abusive relationship may not be seen as something a
teenage couple would experience. However by choosing a
teenage couple rather than a young adult couple reinforces this
idea that abusive relationships are a social issue that we face.
Also that many young girls are getting involved in these
relationships and feel like they can’t leave the person as they are
always hoping he will change. By having a teenage couple
emphasises the need for a social change and there needs to be
more awareness. It highlights an issue that isn’t talked about
much. By having them young it also shows it can happen at any
age. In fact according to loveisrespect.org 94% of female victims
who have an intimate partner violence, were aged 16-19 and
70% of those age 20-24 were victimized by a current or former
boyfriend or girlfriend. Also 1.5 million high school students
nationwide experience physical behaviour within a single year
from their partner. Therefore although many wouldn’t view as
teenagers facing violence, there is a high number that actually
do. Therefore this music video does tackle a real social issue that
isn’t covered much in society.
5. Costume1950s relationship
- For the Kates dream like world, we decided to
have a 1950s style spotty red dress. We
decided to continue the 50s theme with the
clothing choice. Also the colour red connotes
to love and passion. Therefore by choosing
this, it continues the theme of love. The
reason we decided to chose the 1950s style
dress was because it establishes a difference
visually between the dream like world and
the real world so the audience can easily
establish the difference between the two
scenes
- For Ryan’s outfit we decided a suit would be the
perfect attire when bringing the idea forward
of being the iconic perfect husband for the
1950s. By wearing the smart clothing, it
shows he cares about his appearance and will
make it more attractive to the audience/more
appealing as he is suited and booted. He looks
presentable, which will be contrasted to the
modern day version of Ryan, to emphasise
how different the two characters really are.
6. CostumeModern Day - Robyn
• The red baggy flannel and converse or
similar pumps. This is quite an
average outfit which emphasises
this is her real world rather than her
dream world
• Keeping with the red, shows she still
the same person and makes the
colour continuous throughout the
music video
• The colour choice is also significant. By
having ‘red’ is show her love and
passion however ‘red’ can also
symbolize danger
• The ‘scruffy’ clothing could show she
has given up on her appearance as
the relationships had made her feel
worthless so she doesn’t care
anymore
7. • For the modern day, he will
wear scruffy clothing
• A scruffy white tee, baggy
jeans and shoes
• The scruffy clothing will signify
that he is dirty and doesn’t
care about his appearance
• We decided to chose this
outfit as he still needs to be
portrayed as your average
man to the rest of the
world as its violent nature
wouldn’t be shown, only to
her
CostumeModern Day - Ryan
8. • During parts of the abusive
relationship, Robyn will
just be in a dirty baggy
white tee
• This will again, bring the
idea forward she doesn’t
care about her
appearance as she
already feels worthless
• However the revealing
clothing symbolises her
emotions – she is
emotionally exposed to
Ryan
Modern Day - Robyn

9. CostumePerformance - Robyn
• Alongside the 1950s and modern day
costume, we also thought it was
important to have different
costumes for the performance
(when she is lip syncing)
• We chose a white dress as its
something quite plain, and it’s
almost as if there artist is striping
back and revealing herself to the
audience
• We decided to have two costumes
within the performance, the
other a leather jacket, black jeans
and an overall scruffy look. This is
quite a current style, therefore it
also shows she in with the trends,
and makes her more ‘real’ and
relatable.
10. Location
• As our target audience wanted a range of locations, we have
carefully selected various locations in order to meet this request.
• One of the location is Ruislip Lido, a scene in particular we’d like to
shoot here is her looking over the lake. This would be for her
performance scenes
• Another location, was a field. We thought this would be quite
effective on camera and create quite a diverse music video and
keep the audience engaged
11. • The main scenes will be shot inside a home, as it makes it more natural on
camera. By carefully choosing to shoot in the home, it makes it more
convincing as the abusive relationship is ‘behind closed doors’ which is
common in abusive relationships
• One scene will be shot in her bedroom, this makes it more personal
between the audience and the artist as a bedroom is often connoted
to being quite personal to that individual as its your own space
• Another scene will take place in a kitchen, again prompting the idea that
they have a normal relationship and its real life
Location
12. Makeup
• Makeup is also important when
establishing the different between
her dream world and real world
• In her dream world, her makeup will be
quite generic – red lip, winged
eyeliner and rosy cheeks. This will
establish that its her dream world,
and she has this perfect lifestyle
• In her real world, the makeup will be
minimal. We will also be using special
effects in order to create bruises and
cuts from the abusive relationship
• During the performance, her makeup will
be quite natural.
• However during some scenes, she will
have her face with paint dripping
down, and all being quite dream like.
Then the other half with natural
makeup and bruises – connotation
the two lives being portrayed
13. Hair
• For the 1950s relationship,
Ryan will have his hair
will be slicked back, this
shows he is well
groomed and cares for
his appearance
• For the modern day
relationship, he will have
his hair messy. This will
signify he doesn’t really
care how he presents
himself
Ryan
14. • For the 1950s relationship, she
will have her hair in an up do
as this is a common hair do
associated with the 50s
• For the modern day, she will have
to hairstyles – both quite
messy. One style will be with
her hair in a messy ponytail
and the other with her hair
messily down. The messy hair
will add to the idea she’s not
too bothered about her
appearance
• For the performance, she will
again have two hairstyles. One
with her hair curled and the
other with her hair messily

15. Lighting
- Dream world/1950s
The dream world will be shot in natural lighting due to the lack of
equipment we have. However we do want the lighting to be brighter to
demonstrate a more happy place for her and to symbolise that it is a
dream. We almost what a dreamy effect to the scenes to emphasis it’s a
dream, so the audience can establish the difference between the two.
Lighting is important establishing that its not real life
- Modern Day
The scenes will also be shot in natural lighting as it will create a
verisimilitude atmosphere
However there will be a grainy filter to help the audience establish the
difference between the modern day and 1950s however also
demonstrates how she feels. The grainy filter, is dull – symbolising how
she is feeling
16. Props
• Props are vital when showing subtle differences between the dream
world and real world
• Props are also important when showing that the dream world is made up,
therefore adding certain things that wouldn’t usually appear in the
scenes to make it obvious to the audience that it is a dream rather
than real life
