2. What is your final film idea? Why did you pick it?
Our final film idea is a horror and psychological based thriller, as it includes both horrific scenes of supernatural
experiences that the protagonist faces, and to deal with these traumatic encounters she goes to a psychologist. Then
when she visits the psychologist, who is infact a man, the flash backs of her past appear using a crosscut edit and are
revealed. The antagonist it portrayed as super natural and therefore a series of unfortunate events begin to happen to
the protagonist which is told to the audience when she visits the psychologist. The psychologist begins to realise that
she's mentally and emotionally unstable and therefore ends with a cliffhanger for the rest of the movie which makes it
more interesting for the audience.
3. What is your genre? What key conventions are you going to use? Link this
to your research.
Our overall genre is a thriller although within that our sequence we include psychological horror conventions, and we’ve
chose these to fit in with the storyline. Also in our questionnaire they were rated the two highest therefore thought this
was more adequate. The key conventions that we’ll be using are; innocent citizens that find themselves into danger, low
lighting and uncertainty. We have chosen these conventions as our protagonist finds himself in a series of uncontrollable
danger, low lighting is included so our antagonist isn’t identified as they're seen as supernatural, also to portray the true
aspect of a thriller which creates a dark and gloomy effect. Finally uncertainty as both the protagonist and the audience
are unsure of what's to come and they are left in anticipation, this contrasts with the antagonist knowing exactly what
they're doing and trying to achieve which suggests they are certain.
4. How will you include opening sequence conventions?
We imagine our opening sequence to be firstly presenting the opening credit and
our production company “Epiphany productions” we would then use eerie
background music to build tension and then we are going to introduce our main
character the protagonist we are thinking by an extreme close up of the
protagonists eye this way we are not revealing the identity straight away.
5. What characters will be shown? How do they compare to ‘real’ characters from your genre? How will you
be representing them? Link to your audience.
The characters that will be shown throughout our opening scene are our protagonist which is called Hannah, our
psychologist who is called Bryan and finally our unidentified supernatural antagonist. Hannah is originally shown
as a normal character although when the antagonist gets involved it changes her view on life and begins to
become abnormal and strange. The psychologist compares to real life as they are a stereotypical psychologist
that tries help the protagonists situation. They compare by showing gloomy dark characters which link to thriller
conventions, which further links to the aspect of horror and psychological thriller. We will be representing them
in a unidentified way especially the antagonist as our aim is them for not to be revealed.
6. What will be your visual style (mise-en scene, camera, editing)? Discuss some elements and explain why
you have used them?
Like mentioned previously we are thinking of starting our opening sequence with an extreme close up of
the protagonist eye, we then cut the camera to a long shot profile of where the scene takes place;where
the protagonist is laying in bed with dark lighting this well set the mood and hint to the audience that
something freaky is about to happen. Then when we are going to cut to a different scene where we are
firstly introduced to the psychologist this will be evident by the mise-en-scene with the glasses the suit
the clipboard also the setting of the room with the sofa where the protagonist can sit and explain her
thriller experiences.
7. Target audience, how has your initial idea been influenced by your audience?
Our initial idea has been influenced by our questionnaire that the audience participated in
identifying what type of thrillers they enjoy, the conventions they are interested in, settings and
genres. This has therefore helped us put together our ideas of how to portray our opening scene. In
addition by doing our own research, looking at 4 thriller genre films and analyzing the key
conventions i feel like this has improved our knowledge and therefore we can use this knowledge to
give our audience what they want.
8. What is your unique selling point? Why is the audience going to like your films over others?
The audience are going to be intrigued and interested in our opening scene as it's different to the typical thriller
and a lot is happening at once, also flashing scenes and harsh and gloomy lighting is used to grab the audience's
attention. Furthermore our opening scene is aimed at boys/men aged around 15-17 year olds this was because
they are more likely to enjoy the aspects of psychological horror and also our protagonist is an attractive young
women so they are more likely to be captivated by that. Which would therefore draw them in and create a unique
selling point as its giving an aspect of something different.
9. How we came up with our target audience.
Firstly, we took the gender
information and found out our
survey takers were predominantly
male, this is helpful because our
target audience is male.
We then from our questionnaire looked at which age
group to aim our thriller film at, which was around 15-17
year olds. This was based on the survey and therefore
gave an accurate target audience.
10. How we chose our sub genre.
From the bar chart it is evident that Horror
and psychological were the top two popular
subgenre therefore we have decided to use
these two.
Therefore we have decided to use horror as
our sub genre also we will use elements of
psychological conventions.
