This document discusses various traditions and customs observed in Slovakia throughout the year. Some of the traditions mentioned include Fašiangy (Carnival) celebrated in January and February with foods like donuts and fánky; Morena in spring to say goodbye to winter; Easter traditions like painting eggs and building May poles for girls in May; carving pumpkins in autumn; harvest festivals in September/October; remembering deceased loved ones on All Saints Day in November; and winter traditions like St. Nicholas Day in December and celebrating Christmas with family on December 25th. Many of these customs are part of folk culture and celebrated annually at the author's school through a folklore club.
1. TRADITIONS AND HABITS
IN SLOVAKIA

2. We made this presentation in Erasmus club – We
communicate with Europe.
We are keeping a lot of traditions in Slovakia
matched with diferent seasons and past.
We remind many traditions at our school in the folk
club „Primrose – prvosienka“.
In our presentation we want to mention the most
known Slovak traditions kept in our country.
3. FAŠIANGY OR CARNIVAL TIME IN SLOVAKIA
Carnival is the time after Christmas and before
fasting.
Carnival is the period in January and February.
It is full of fun, carnivals, food, well-being.
Even at school we organize carnivals.
Typical in this period are sweets - donuts and
„fánky“. We often prepare them at school.
4. SPRING TRADITION - MORENA
• Morena is a typical tradition when people were saying
„Goodbye“ to winter and welcomed spring.
• They made a wooden doll as a symbol of winter and
carried it with singing to the river, to the stream,
sometimes lit it and threw it into the water.
• That's how they said "Goodbye" to winter.
• We remember this tradition in
our folklore club almost every
year.
5. SPRING TRADITION - EASTER
• Easter is the tradition typical of European countries and it is
celebrated by all Christians.
• It is the holiday when we commemorate the crucifixion and
resurrection of Jesus.
• It is also the feast of the birth of life.
• Before Easter we have a nice tradition - Palm Sunday, when girls
walk with twigs from house to house, singing and wishing health.
• In Slovakia we paint eggs before Easter, we knit whips
• As a typical dish we can
mention smoked ham.
6. MAY - BUILDING MAY FOR GIRLS
• 1st May is a holiday in Europe, but in Slovakia we have another
nice custom.
• The boys put a huge branch decorated with ribbons in front of
the girl home they like.
• In Slovakia, we also celebrate May 8 as the day of liberation
of our country and the end of World War II.
7. AUTUMN TRADITIONS
Tekvičák – exhibition of pumpkin monsters – it is
very beautiful tradition in the period when the
pumpkins ripen – in October
We carve pumpkin monsters at school and also at
home.
We put candles in them and we light them.
We show carved creations at school, at home and
in our town.
8. HARVEST FESTIVAL
After harvest we celebrate
The end of collecting crops and we keep
the festival called „Dožinky“ in Slovakia
/ Harvest Festival/
In our region Vráble we celebrate Vintage -
Vinobranie, because we live in vineyard area.
People wear folk costumes and they make beautiful
wreaths of vine twigs.
In parade while singing
they celebrate the end
of grape harvest.
It is actually thanks
for good grain.
9. ALL SAINTS DAY
In November we remember those who left our
world forever and also all saints.
We go to cemetery, to the graves and we light
candles on them.
10. ST. MARTIN ON WHITE HORSE
• 11 November is a day, when Martin on white
horse should come.
• People used to say, that this day it should
start snowing.
• That´s why they kept
saying, that Martin
on white horse
is coming.
11. WINTER TRADITIONS
Before Christmas there is the Advent period as the
preparation for Christmas time.
Also at school we use to make Christmas decoration, we
have Christmas market in our town and before holidays
we have Nativity festival / Crib /at school , too.
12. SAINT NICHOLAS
On 6 December St. Nicholas is coming and he always
brings sweets to all good children.
Nicholas comes with the Angel and with Beelzebub.
This tradition is very typical for Slovakia.
At that time we know that
Christmas are before the door.
13. CHRISTMAS
• Christmas is celebrated in all European
• countries.
• Christians celebrate the coming of Christ
• into this world, the birth of Jesus.
• Christmas is the holiday of family, peace and joy.
• The symbol is Christmas tree.
• People meet at the family table, giving each other
some gifts.
• In each country there is some
• typical meal.
• In Slovakia it is sauerkraut soup,
• potato salad and fried fish.
• We eat wafers, honey, garlic, fruit.
