countries in terms of the type of school and the age of
the children.
3. Types of schools
Nursery, kindergarten
• Pre- primary education is for children 3 - 5 years
old and it is provided in Nursery – Kindergarten.
Note : Kindergaten is also part of our school.
4. Primary schools
According to the type of education we have in Slovakia:
Primary schools - in which children aged 6 to 15 are
educated. These schools provide
1. Primary education for children 6 - 10 years old
/ 1st - 4th grades /
2. Lower secondary education for children aged 11 – 15
/ 6th – 9th grades /
Here students receive
general education completed
by exams.
/ Tesing of students from 9th grade /.
Note : In Vráble we have 4 primary schools. /
5. Secondary schools
• After finishing primary school pupils can study in
grammar schools / gymnasium / and secondary
vocational schools.
• The education in these schools usually takes 4 years,
sometimes 5 years.
• Students finish these schools at the age of 19 with the
exam called Graduation / Maturita /. It is also called
the exam of adult.
/ Secondary schools are in each town and all cities. In Vráble we have 1
gymnasium and 1 secondary vocational school. The other secondary schools are
in closer towns such as Nitra, Levice, Zlaté Moravce. /
6. Universities
• Studies at universities usually take 5 years together . But it is divided
into 2 levels – 1st level lasts 3 years and students receive the title –
Bachelor.
• Then stdents can continue in 2nd level which lasts 2 years and
students can reach various titles: Magister, Engineer, Doctor, ...
• Each university has several faculties with different specialization.
• In Slovakia universities are in each city and some towns.
• Students can find most of them in the capital city in Bratislava, and
also some of them in the cities Nitra, Žilina, Košice. Banská Bystrica,
Prešov, Trenčín,...
• Nitra is the nearest town to Vráble and there are two major
universities - the University of Constantine Philosopher, which also
includes the Faculty of Education
• and the University of Agriculture.
7. School year
• In Slovakia school year starts on
1st September and finishes on 30th June.
• Then the long summer holidays start – in July and
August.
• School year is divided into 2 terms.
The first finishes on 31st January.
The second starts on the 1st of February.
• Students receive cetrificates of results called
„vysvedčenie“ at the end of each term in Slovakia.
• We have only 1 free day and we continue in
school year.

here is the autumn public holiday – 1st November.
These holidays take usually 5 days.
• Christmas holidays are around Christmas and
take usually 2 weeks. They end around 7th January.
• Spring holidays lasting 1 week are in Slovakia in

here. They take about 1 week.
• Finally summer holidays start on 1st July and finish
on 31st August.
9. About our school
• Our school - Základná škola s materskou školou Viliama
Záborského in Vráble is a primary school for children
aged 6 -15 years.
• The school also includes
a kindergarten for children
aged 3-5 years.
• In kindergarten we have 2 classes. / 40 children /
• In primary school we have 12 classes, some special
classes for chemistry, biology, ICT classes, gym, library,
language classes and cabinets.
• 230 pupils attend primary school.
10. • Our school is
in Vráble
in Nitra district.
• As we mentioned Nitra is only 20 km from Vráble.
• Our pupils are from the town Vráble and also from
surrounding villages.
11. Activities at our school
• After the educational reform in 2009 each school can
create School educational program based on State
educational program, which determines the subjects and
hour allocation to the subjects. / number of lessons weekly. /
• Then each school can put some own ideas into the program.
• At our school we decided to concentrate on ICT
technologies and English language so we focused on
international programs - we started with eTwinning and
later we got involved in Comenius and Erasmus+.
• Of course our student are good at informatic technologies
and programming, at other languages such as Russian and
German, Maths, History, Geography, ...
12. International activities.
• Are international projects motivational for students?
• My answer is: Yes
• International projects eTwinning and Erasmus+ are a great benefit for
teachers but especially for students.
• Our students like them because they belong to the innovative interesting
methods used in educational process at school.
• In both types of projects students have chance to know other European
countries, their languages, Educational and school system, they have
chance to use English in practical way,
to improve communication skills,
to be better in ICT,...
• They can learn how to work
in the team, to respect different
culture.
13. International projects Erasmus+
• In Erasmus+ projects students also learn how to solve various
problems in the airport, how to behave in the hotel, ...
• Thank to these projects teachers can exchange experiences and also
know better the educational and school system and innovative
educational methods in European countries.
• All participants have chance to know personally other European
countries, their geography, history, sights, life style,..
• But also virtual mobilities are very popular
at our school and they are very significant
and useful part of these projects because
more students have chance to meet their
peers from partnership countries
„face to face“ without travelling.
14. Project Days
• We organize a lot of project Days at our school to disseminate
our results and success to our pupils, teachers, parents and also
local community.
• In these Project Days our students have also chance to develope
their talent and skills because we often connect them with some
performances, songs, dances, traditions.
• We have also folk club at our school because we talk about
traditions in the most of our projects.
15. Etwinning, Comenius and Erasmus+
• Our school was involved into a lot of etwinning projects, we were
the winner in European competition of the best etwinning project
in 2014 with the project „Art connects us“.
• We are working now on the 7th international project with
exchanges of pupils „My country, your country“. At the same
time we are involved also into project „Historical treasures of
Europe“.
• The projects had and have different
interesting topics and were determined
sometimes on younger pupils –
also from nursery
/ Let´s play and learn together/
and sometimes on older pupils. / Let´s save the life on our planet / .
16. eTwinning
• Etwinning program is the part of Erasmus+ program and it is
important for our project “My country, your country“ to be active in
this program.
• So we could do some interesting activities also in this space – some
quizzes, contests, on-line activities.
• Why? A larger number of pupils could be involved in these
activities. That is the aim of our project: not only travelling
and international meetings,
but a lot of activities
at school, games,
virtual mobilities,
collages, contests,
on-line activities,...
17. Thank you for attention and interest
