Influence of Romanticism in the Contemporary Shows True...
Imagine a life in the 18th century when a revolution is taking place that exercises freedom,
emotional liberty and importance of oneself. When the Romantic Era hit many individuals were
becoming aware of a movement of intense emotion and became interested in unfamiliar and exotic
experiences. Many of these experiences in which, brought to light a whole new world of darkness
and strong emotions such as apprehension and terror. Romanticism in the 18th century sparked
imagination; Imagination that was perceived as the "ultimate power" (see reference). Fast
forwarding to contemporary culture, many of these examples of romanticism are seen in shows such
as True Blood, American Horror Story, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. ... Show

Violet is a girl that is in touch with her gothic side and is more interested in the mansion than scared
of it. Violet is misunderstood by many but she likes Tate because he understands her. Violet says to
Tate "I used to think you were like me. You were attracted to the darkness. But Tate, you are the
darkness." This is when she realizes that he is not among the living like she is. There is a scene
where she cannot withstand the pressures anymore and Tate finds her cutting herself. Tate says
"You're doing it wrong, if you're trying to kill yourself you cut vertically, they can't stitch that up".
Tate loves Violet, so he does not mind if she dies because that would mean he can stay with her in
the mansion forever. That quote coming from Tate would surprise anyone who hears it because it's a
different and creepy type of love that Tate feels for Violet because he wishes death upon someone he
loves. I believe that Romanticism is displayed here in the sense that Violet wants emotional liberty
and has a special ghost that supports her through it. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
portrays a more kid–friendly aspect of Romanticism. The imagination behind this movie is
remarkable and paints unfamiliar pictures but since it is animated it takes away from it being so
scary to more funny. A good portion of the movie is expressed in music and the lyrics to the songs
are eye–opening to say the least. When Jack leaves his Halloween

Analysis: Can You Survive A Horror Story
My final project, Can You Survive a Horror Story is a hyperfiction slasher narrative. The story is
narrated in first person: the reader is Alex, a college girl spending a weekend away with her friends.
As the story progresses, Alex and her friends begin to be hunted down and killed. In terms of
language, the story was written using very informal language. Since the story is about teenagers, and
is narrated by one, the use of colloquial language seemed appropriate. The story is structured in a
way that it has one single beginning. As the murders commence, however, the reader is presented
with choices, in the form of different hyperlinks. Depending on what the reader chooses, they either
die or survive. Since the goal of the story is to survive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is one scenario, for example, where Cheryl survives. For that to happen, the reader would
have to choose to stay with Cheryl in the bedroom instead of going to see the neighbor. After the
reader dies, if they choose to go to the afterlife, they'll read how Cheryl escaped and survived. I am
aware that Cheryl's survival is built on a specific scenario that not necessarily all readers would
land. The reason I chose to organize the story this way, is so each reader can have its own
experience while reading the story – in accordance with Landow's idea of each reader creating its
own path. Despite it being a linear narrative, the reader can choose how and when the story ends.
Another feature included in the story is metafiction. After the first murder, Alex realizes she is in a
horror story. With that realization, Alex begins to talk directly to the reader, pleading for help or
criticizing bad choices. Alex even condemns the writer, denouncing the cliches in the story, and
noting how some events in the story are similar to what happens in other horror

Horror Stories by Stevenson and Greene Essay
Horror Stories by Stevenson and Greene Horror stories are an excellent traditional genre. This genre
has been around for almost as long as stories have been told. In this generation there is not much
that can really scare us, but what does actually make a good horror story? Horror stories need to
have a good and intimidating storyline, it needs to play on people's fears, it also needs to give its
audience a real thrill and send chills down their spines. The horror story may be based on phobias,
superstitions, murder or science fiction. Horror stories that involve science can be really scary
sometimes, as this modern world is vastly developing, and we sometimes wonder what science can
do. If a relatively small atom bomb can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with the imagery used, the setting whereby the horror takes its place is an important part of a
horror story. This also helps create a daunting atmosphere. Also a specific setting maybe associated
with horror such as a graveyard or a marooned big castle, when this type of setting is used it creates
an even better atmosphere, as the reader recognises the setting and associates it with horror. In
successful horror stories assorted types of characters is used, this mixture is fairly important in the
making of a good horror story. This mixture is imperative as using various characters allows the
author to explore different aspects of people's personalities, which can be used to explore the
menacing side of people's personality, and the author can also explore how other humans interact
with the scary side to someone's personality. A type of character that is very common in horror
stories is the sinister, obsessive character; this is usually the villain of the story. This character
creates the tension in the storyline and may be the main character of the story, there are exceptions
and sometimes the obsessive character may not be the villain. Another character there usually is in
horror stories is the weak, unbalanced character, who doesn't really use much initiative, this
character is sometimes a good target for the villain, and this weak, character is also usually innocent,
but may be overpowered by

An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Essay
An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Gothic horror is a type of romantic, horror fiction based on
irrational fear that predominated in 18th century England. The term 'gothic' originated from the
architectural style of the middle ages, but came to describe the dark, terrifying tales that achieved
such popularity. Gothic horror can be determined by many things which exist in all gothic horror
stories, for example eerie settings such as gothic monasteries, bleak comfortless castles, grave yards
and cobwebbed rooms lit by guttering candles. It can also be determined by a unique character such
as a beast, monster, ghost, evil creature and innocent person. Usually the innocent person is killed ...

All three stories were written in the 19th century. They were all set at the same time when they were
written. This is a good effect because at the time when they were written, horror stories containing
superstition and the macabre were popular because the people at that time believed in witchcraft,
ghosts and demons. The location of the action is of great importance in the gothic novel because it
creates an atmosphere and feeling to the story. 'The Judges House' is located in the dining room of
an old, quiet and isolated house. An old, rambling, heavy built house, this creates a scary
atmosphere thus matching the typical setting of a gothic horror story. It goes on to describe the
dining room as a, room in darkness, this also creates a scary and terrifying atmosphere because you
cant see in the dark and you don't know what's in the dark, this also is an essential gothic horror
element because darkness creates a creepy and scary atmosphere. 'The Tell Tale Heart' is located in a
house that is probably old as a lantern is used by the narrator, this creates a scary atmosphere like
the 'Judges House' because you cant see in the dark and you don't know what is in the darkness so
the reader imagines things that create the scary atmosphere,

A Short Story : The Purpose Of A Horror Story
The purpose of a horror story is to entertain and scare the reader into believing that fictional stories
could happen in real life. The ending to a horror story can either make the story or break the story,
leaving the author with the task of creating an ending as horrifying as the story that was just read.
There are many different ways an author can craft an ending to their horror story in order to
accentuate the works' horrific effects. The different endings are shown throughout four different
authors and five different works. Different themes, motifs, and symbols have all been used in order
to bring horrific works to life for the readers, but their effects all come together to induce fear and
strengthen the endings of the stories, leaving readers and viewers with frightening images of the fate
that found the main characters. The different works use themes of unavoidable fate, hopelessness,
and ambiguity to strengthen the horrific effects in the endings of their stories. In Daphne du
Maurier's, "Don't Look Now," the ending raises the hopes of the audience that there will be a happy
ending for John and his family, only to have it taken away in a cruel twist of fate. The short story is
centered around John and Laura, a couple who is on holiday after the devastation of losing their
daughter to a deadly bout of meningitis. After meeting twins in Venice who claim to be psychic,
Laura is ecstatic by their claims that the blind twin could see their late daughter happily between

Transformations In Horror Story : House Taken Over By...
Transformations in Horror Stories The fear creeping up my skin as goosebumps begin to appear
with the first steps into a haunted house filled with monsters, screams, and darkness. The weird
smells and sounds and occasional air blasts lead to a rush or adrenaline, which create a dreadful
sensation. The idea of having someone creep up behind me causes my spine to tingle and the hairs
on my neck to rise. Fear is an inevitable emotion that comes in various forms whether it be
monsters, Gothic elements, or transformations within stories. Through the three short stories, the
readers are introduced to the effects that the transformations in the mood, characters, and setting
have on the tension and build of fear in the readers. Changes in the mood can affect how the reader
views a story and the aura that the story gives off whether it be a calming or spooky feeling. In the
short story "House Taken Over" by Julio Cortazar, the author conveys a change in the mood through
an ordinary environment with ordinary characters that are suddenly disturbed by elements of
fantasy, which builds up a feeling of uncertainty in the readers. One night, the narrator hears noises
from the other side of their house as "the sound came through muted and indistinct" (39). The idea
that the noises might return and take over more sections should stir an emotion of paranoia,
completely different from the previous mood of tranquility; however, the narrator and Irene seem to
believe that this is normal and

Horror Story Research Paper
Horror stories have multiple effects on everyone. Some people loved to be scared to have the fight–
or–flight response. Others don't like to be scared because sometimes it can sometimes permanently
make you scared of something and you'll never be able to do it again. Horror movies and stories do
have to throw in some twists and turns that are scary just to keep the audience interested so they will
keep watching the movie or reading the story. In stories like "beware: don't read this poem", they
say, "The U.S bureau of missing persons report... 100,000 people disappeared." It shows that people
get lost all the time and sometimes they just get lost in something and can't get out. It doesn't mean
that they get lost literally, it means they may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It wasn't suspected when the girl was happy and all was good. Just like that, the door suddenly
opened and the doll was up on a shelf. Well, she then touched the doll and all you can see is her
moving her eyes and showing that she is a doll. It transformed from being all happy and going good,
to bad and now she can't move and being scared. I've seen many movies where transformation plays
a big role in the scary part of the movie. Just like it was in the movie "The Sixth Sense" when it
plays out like Malcolm is real the whole time. Just at the end, it shows Malcolm was a ghost the
whole time which was shocking to everyone. It just twisted the audience's mind when that happened
at the end of the movie. Transformation in that movie is what made everyone want to keep watching
to figure out how and why something in the movie happened. In conclusion, transformation plays a
big role in movies and stories, especially in horror. It keeps the audience interested in the movie or
story and it keeps them on their toes to figure out how and why that certain thing may have
happened a way it did. So ask this, how would a movie or story be like without transformation in it?
Do you think it would be as good as movies and stories today that have transformation in

A Living Horror Story Of The Holocaust
It was 1942 in Frankfurt, Germany and you could almost make out the smell of the cold winter air.
World War II was uprising and the Nazis were scattered all over Germany, they were taking
hundreds of thousands of Jews each day. They were being taken to camps that no one ever returned
from. The only people who did end up surviving, were those who escaped, and the stories that were
being told by the escapers were a living horror story. In a small house, which was a faded blue color
with missing roof pieces and slightly cracked windows, was a Jewish family of six with only two
bedrooms to share and a living room that could barely fit three people. The parents, Claudia and
Bruno, had both lost their job. They barely had enough food for two meals ... Show more content on

what day it was or what time it was but it was probably in late January, they had missed Hanukkah.
It was then about 10:00 pm and all the kids were sleeping besides for Klara, she was looking around
in the dark, small place in the basement, she was wondering if she and the kids would make it
through World War II, if they did where they would go (because for all they knew Claudia could
have been dead) and how would they live. A pounding sound on the floor above startled Karla and
she lost her train of thought. Her heart pounded harder as the pounding got closer and closer to the
basement, then her life started to fall apart after one single second. One of the officers lifted up the
top of the emergency room door and there he was, a tall man with perfectly jelled brown hair and
dirt ugly brown eyes that matched the ugly off green uniform they wore. Karla sat up and stared

American Horror Story
American Horror Story is a television show created by the brilliant Ryan Murphy. The show has an
interesting format which consisted of every season being a new story with new characters.
Sometimes actors would come back with new parts, and others would leave and come back later.
This format keeps the show fresh and interesting, with each season feeling like a new show
completely.
Season 3 of American Horror Story was labeled "Coven." A season set in New Orleans involving
two tribes of witches, both of which being said to have sprang from Salem. At first this had confused
me, are they saying all magic comes from Tituba in Salem? Europe has a history of magic, this
doesn't make sense. After finding an interview with Ryan Murphy, he explained that it was just that
one bloodline had come from Salem, but that there were other bloodlines that had come from other
areas as well.

The Horror Story Of Slender Man
Coming into the 21st century, we have come up with a new way to shed light upon one of our
scariest nightmares. The new "boogeyman" that has swept across the nation and the world is called,
Slenderman. He is an unusually tall and slender man dressed in a nice suit. He doesn't seem scary at
first until you see his, well, lack of a face. Even then, he doesn't seem that scary until you hear the
stories. Slenderman stalks and psychologically torments his victims (who are usually children) for
long periods of time until he takes his victim in his long tentacles, which grow from his shoulder
blades, and he drags them to another dimension where he consumes them ("Slender Man" The
Wiki). These tales are just scary stories to strike a new fear into ... Show more content on

For young, immature minds the "evidence" can be compelling; YouTube documentaries have been
created (Slender Suits by fxscreamer), many forums and websites have "pictures" of Slenderman
(creepypasta, SomethingAwful, Tumblr etc.), and stories written by non–proffessional sources from
several other websites. For those who look further into it, evidence disproving all of this is easily
found. If someone were to look up the true origin of Slenderman, it is clearly stated that it is a
fictional character created for a photo contest. After the attempted murder of the Wisconsin girl,
Something Awful even created an article (as blunt and unfeeling as it may be) telling people where
Slenderman originates from and pleading with people to not be stupid and kill in Slenderman's name
(Parsons). Using the baloney detection kit (or any form of common sense for that matter), any
"evidence" that Slenderman is real, is unsubstantial, as it is. Photographs, stories and videos are all
dismissible due to how easily they can be manipulated into fallacies. The substantial evidence for
the existence of a Slenderman type creature is truly

romance. The story 'vacancy', consists of a romantic couple and their experience with crime,
however both characters are withholding large secrets from one another. I was influenced by the TV
series Pretty Little Liars and American Horror Story as they both contain murder and supernatural
themes. The purpose of this narrative was to develop my writing skills by creating my first crime
story while avoiding cliché. The goal was to portray a realistic relationship with an underlying serial
killer theme. This was achieved through Anthea who had a more casual approach to relationships,
which is demonstrated in paragraph one, "I duck under his

Society : A Horror Story Essay
Society: A horror story.
Human beings, as a whole, have generated more than enough speculation as to the origins of mortal
nature. Why are we they way we are? Why do we do the things we do or feel the way we feel?
Scientists and philosophers have almost always dedicated their causes to the study of biology or
religion, continuously giving humanity's gender, sexuality and identity a basis from a scientific or
religious perspective. Science is supposed to be correct. After all, that IS the basis of science. Yet
how many times has the world thought to be flat and proved wrong? And the sun, which was
thought to be revolving around the earth, was proven incorrect? The theory of social construction
seems to be a new introduction to the way we see the world. It is largely possible that a
brainwashing through society and media plays a large part of the social disparity between men and
women or straight and queer people. Perhaps the innate idea that declares from such a young age
that we are to be brought up based on our gender truly has very little to do with science and is
instead, based on us as a human race? Social construction theory plays on this idea, accusing society
of indoctrination through media, literature, and a sense of 'normalcy' A standard view gender's will
cause a belief that a mother is made to be maternal, a caregiver, a kind and weak aura while much
opposite to the father figure, who is meant to be a brute of physical strength and intelligence. They

American Horror Story: Cult's Advertising
"What's the thing that scares you the most?"("Election Night"). American Horror Story is a horror–
drama anthology series created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy that frequently bastardized
history and folklore by terrorizing its viewers. It has consistently kept fans on their toes. The series
has often nodes to the coming season's theme with hints on its finales, as well as pre–season promos,
teasers, and advertisements that loosely provide context for the upcoming season, commonly
avoiding or limiting text in their advertisements. American Horror Story: Cult is based on the "hive
mentality," where people lose their individuality from a type of brainwashing, where people are
manipulated through their fears. As such, the marketing campaign for American Horror Story: Cult
is widely successful and deliberately tries to invoke a sense of fear, uneasiness, and horror in their
viewers. As a reference to this, American Horror Story: Cult's advertisements are focused on
marketing toward two main phobias; coulrophobia and trypophobia. Coulrophobia is an extreme or

American Horror Story Evaluation
American Horror Story Evaluation
When it comes to a show I always look for something lighthearted. In my opinion the best shows are
the ones that are funny, a bit relatable, have great character development, and overall just uplift your
spirits. Shows like this are hard to come by; there are some old ones that I've come to enjoy such as
Friends and The Office, but lately I have yet to find a show that fits my normal preferences. I have
spent months watching Friends over and over again, but that gets boring after a while, so I decided
to step out of my comfort zone and find a show I wouldn't usually watch. I decided to try American
Horror Story completely aware that it doesn't fit into what I normally look for. To my surprise, I
really enjoyed the show. It's has some scary moments, but nothing too horrifying. The setting, mood,
music, characters, and general atmosphere of the show is meant to give a spooky vibe and does just
that, but it also goes much deeper and appeases all kinds of audiances. The American Horror Story
wasn't created to be funny, and while it has its moments, for the most part it's not. However, it is

Compare And Contrast The American Horror Story And The...
American Horror Story and the Amazing World of Gumball Compared Ryan Murphy's anthology
American Horror Story shows a side of evil and darkness that none of us could ever imagine. Ben
Bocquelet's animated TV show The Amazing World of Gumball represents that unordinary, innocent
part of ourselves that we often forget about. In this paper, I will be comparing the similarities and
the differences of the two, drastically different shows. American Horror Story (AHS) has a
malevolent, dystopian view on the environment and those in it, while The Amazing World of
Gumball (Gumball) tries to pull off a more welcoming, friendly stance. AHS tends to focus more on
the negatives and the evil in the world like murder, illegal drugs, alcohol, lying, manipulation, and
abuse. The show's story can be written in some of the bluntest ways as possible. There is no beating
around the bush or hiding under the blanket. Gumball gives a display of happiness and a fantasy of
what our childhoods could be like. The joy and fun of being a child is shown in a way that younger
kids tend to overlook. The view of the show normally comes off as "fun, innocent humor." AHS's
way of presentation is meant to give off an antiutopian type of reality to appeal to those who enjoy
or find interest in the twisted side of life. Gumball is animated the way it is to have a stronger appeal
to children and give off that vibe of utopia and being carefree. AHS's characters' contain those dark,
gloomy characteristics that

show's history to so. Every season of the show so far has included either ghosts, vampires,
witchcraft, psychics, possession, or magic, all built around the running rules of the American Horror
Story universe. For example, in this world ghosts are subject to specific rules; they are bound to the
location that they died in and can have interactions with the living if they chose to do so. They can
only move around on Devil's Night. Sometimes the ghosts appear with the injuries they died from
but other times they appear to look normal. We've come to associate AHS with the supernatural but
of course, with AHS: Cult, the creators have twisted things up again. 6 Special Guests At The Hotel

Scooby Doo : Suspicion : The Horrors Of The Story?
You'll Never Guess Suspicion is demonstrated at its finest in great works of mystery. Scooby Doo is
a wonderful example of silly mysteries, entertaining the audience with different suspects in a
criminal scenario. The audience can speculate and try to guess who committed the crime throughout
the entire story, paying attention to the hints that the author, or constructor of the story, gives them.
If an audience member can learn how to pay attention to little details that the author is giving them,
and pick up on small things that are being said by certain people, they can often come to find out
who is the suspect, or at least come very close. This is part of what makes mysteries so entertaining.
Furthermore, the author can make their mystery even more interesting by leading the reader in a
certain direction. They can persuade the reader to believe that a certain person is guilty by dropping
hints here and there. In Paul Haven's excerpt from "The Curse of the Poisoned Pretzel", Haven leads
the reader to believe that Skidmore is guilty of poisoning his brother Manchester by describing
Skidmore's background, Manchester's background, and Skidmore's later actions.
Haven starts by creating an evil mood about Skidmore, describing in detail his physical and
emotional background. Skidmore is characterized in this story as being extremely scrawny. A
character who is guilty of a crime often looks the part. A villain often has a dark and dreary
appearance; Skidmore fits this

The Landlady: A Horror Story
Can you really identify what a horror story is? A horror story does not have to have a vampire, or a
zombie, or any supernatural being to be classified as horror. The Landlady is a horror story because
it is suspenseful, it has elements of the supernatural, and the setting is scary. During the beginning of
the story, the setting was scary, but as the story went on it got cheerier. As the book stated, the
neighborhood that Billy was walking through was run down. Buildings had paint chipping off the
sides, and it was dark. Overall, that is not a very warm feeling to have while strolling through a
neighborhood. However, when Billy arrived at the woman's house, suddenly the scene changed.
Upon walking through the front door, Billy saw flowers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Billy notices in the guest book that there has not been a guest at the inn for over two years.
Automatically, Billy starts to question if he should stay; however he, ends up disregarding it. This is
suspense because, at most hotels and inns, there is usually more the one guest staying at a time.
While this is just a bed and breakfast, and there could only be one guest there, it is quite odd for two
years to go by without any guests. Then, Billy had a second thought. He had recognized those names
stated in the guest book. He had thought he may have seen there names before, possibly a
newspaper or something. The second Billy brought this up in conversation, the old women ignored
him and, the topic was not brought up again. It is also odd for the women to not say a thing about
the previous guests. At the beginning of the story, Billy strolls through a run down neighborhood.
After that he finds this Bed and Breakfast. As Billy is walking up to the house, he gets this strange
feeling of doubt. This odd feeling was almost preventing him from wanting to go inside the bed and
breakfast. Billy almost turned around and headed back toward the hotel he was heading to.
However, he ended up ignoring this, and headed on in to the bed and breakfast. When reading a
horror story, don't look just for a scary supernatural being. Instead, look for the characteristics of the
suspense, the setting, and elements

The Press Released Horror Stories
United States. In Kenya, the press released horror stories of what the Mau Mau rebels did to
colonists to destroy support for them among both the British back home, and potential rebels in
Kenya. International news reported Kikuyu attacks on settlers as "fanatical," "degraded," "bestial,"
and "satanic" (Robbins 295). Such press reports denied the Mau Mau rebels their own voice in the
international conversation and turned potential sources of support against them.
However, just as the press has the power to deny support to indigenous resistance, so it can lend
support. In 2011 the National Geographic/Buffett Award for Leadership in Conservation went to
Moi Enomenga; it awarded him 25,000 dollars to support his work in Yasuní National Park ... Show

However, all responses from governments and capitalists have not been violent. Native Americans
have ongoing, nonviolent struggles with the United States government over land, money, education,
healthcare, and legal rights. Maxus has regular dealings with ONHAE that are nonviolent, yet they
are a form of resistance because ONHAE is in itself a resistance.
Those that are protested against may not understand the protest; Robbins writes that the British
could think of no reason that the Mau Mau would rebel, and so they blamed the Mau Mau oath
(Robbins 297). When two cultures collide, it is reasonable to assume that one (or both) will not
understand the other; there is often little attempt to understand the indigenous culture, as shown by
missionary attempts to educate indigenous people away from their traditional cultures. The inability
to understand each other, or perhaps the lack of an attempt to, may also be a leading cause for the
violent reactions that foreign parties have had to indigenous resistance.
The Huaorani are such a small group that open rebellion like the Mau Mau's would be totally
illogical. Instead, they have tried going the legal route, and, in doing so, have attempted to create a
cross–cultural understanding by educating the leaders of ONHAE to interact with outsiders.
ONHAE is an organization of resistance, yet it works semi–cooperatively with those that it was
organized to resist. This seeming paradox

Elements Of Horror Stories
Hattie Sparks
Sharon A. Russell explains to readers how to decipher horror stories by saying, "Some students
think that the best way to examine it is to deal with the way horror fiction is organized or structured.
Examining the organization of a horror story shows that it shared certain traits with other types of
fiction.". She says this in her article "What is a Horror Story". Horror fiction needs to be in a certain
order, structured, and have specific horror traits. Some essential traits to horror she later talks about,
are supernatural elements, eerie settings, and suspense. When these elements interact horror is
created. "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs is a horror story because, of the supernatural paw, the
setting, and suspense of the story. One important element of horror is a supernatural trait, which
"The Monkey's Paw" does indeed have. The main supernatural trait would be the paw itself. The
history of the paw is stated, by Sergeant–Major Morris, to have had a spell placed on it by a fakir.
Sergeant Morris, also told the readers how all the previous six wishes were answered. Multiple
wishes answered using the same process, could not be coincidence. Another reason that this story
fits into the supernatural trait is how Mr. White describes his experience using the paw. He states, "it
twisted in my hand like a snake"(pg 110). Only something supernatural would do this. Lastly, it is
not simply a coincidence that when Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds, that it

"Um yeah." Both Kyle and I said awkwardly
"Well Aaron and I have been thinking that we would move Texas." my mom explained

"Well yes, but only Aaron and I are" my mom said
"Where will we go?" I asked (about yelling)

FX's hit suspense series 'American Horror Story' is continuing to become successful, despite some
lapse in ratings for the past couple of weeks. The show managed to rise above it and regain those

amazing for the audience except for one thing, and apparently it is Lady Gaga's acting skills. She is
having anxiety issues regarding this and her doctor told her not to get off meds. The ratings of the
show went up this week according to Headline Planet and most of the viewers gained back were
from 18 to 49 years old. This is definitely some good news to the series' showrunner, Ryan Murphy.

They told him the house was haunted. They told him the house was strange. Five families had

His second night in his new home, what could possibly happen?
A whispered name.
The boy stirs in his sleep. A pale, vaporous moon lights the room. Shadows are deep. He twists his
head, turning towards the window so that his face becomes a soft mask, unblemished, colourless.
But the boy's dream is troubled; beneath his lids, his eyes dart to and fro.

beyond is more dense; it seems to swell into the bedroom, a waxing shadow. He shrinks away,
reluctant to allow contact with this fresh darkness.
His vision adjusts, and the inkiness scatters as if weakened by its own sudden growth. He advances
again, passing through the doorway to stand shivering on the landing overlooking the staircase. To
descend this would be like sinking into the blackest of all pits, for darkness down there appears
final.
Still the hushed whisper urges:
'...Daniel...'
He listens for a moment more, perhaps wishing that the minor voice would also rouse his sleeping
parents. There is no sound from their room; grief has exhausted their bodies as well as their spirit.
He stares into the centre of the darkness below, terribly compelled to descend.

wall paper. Disbelief mingles with the fascination and the fear. Small lights – caught from who

The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene Essay
The Horror Genre in Stories of Stevenson and Greene
R.L Stevenson's 'The Body–Snatcher' and Graham Greene's 'The End Of The party' are both short
stories that are a part of the horror genre, despite differing in many ways. Throughout this essay, I
am going to compare the differences and the similarities between the two horror stories. I will assess
the way the writers use certain aspects that are part of the horror genre to make their story have an
impact on the reader and have the ability to captivate their reader and keep them engrossed in the
story. I will be focusing on specific areas within each story including, setting, structure, atmosphere,
suspense, endings and also the different types ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of isolated areas can be associated with sinister goings on and can add again to the reader's
uneasiness and fear. Also innocent victims can make the reader feel scared and more vulnerable, as
it demonstrates that bad things can happen to anyone. Twists in horror stories are very common and
both these horror stories contain different twists that can shock the reader.
'The Body–Snatcher' is a more typical horror story containing many of these things that I have
mentioned. On the other hand, 'The End Of The Party' differs to 'The Body–Snatcher', with it being
more to do with the mind and appearing quite everyday, and not containing as many of the typical
horror components. But both 'The Body–Snatcher' and 'The End Of The Party' can be placed in the
horror genre as they contain the vital components that make a good horror story.
'The Body–Snatcher' is quite self–explanatory in the title and is about body snatching. It begins "in
the small parlour of the George at Debenham" where we meet the main character, Fettes. Fettes has
an encounter with someone from his past – Macfarlane, who he is obviously not pleased to see for
reasons unknown to the reader at this stage. At the mention of Macfarlane's name "Fettes became
instantly sober", this immediately tells the reader of something that has gone on in the past that may
have been unpleasant to

Examples Of Foreshadowing In Horror Stories
A key element in horror stories is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing will make readers want to read
more and it will also create suspense. Foreshadowing is nearly same in horror stories.
Foreshadowing in horror stories such as "THE LANDLADY", "THE MONKEY'S PAW" and "THE
TELL– TALE HEARTS" and "The Hitchhiker" are very important and creates suspense for the
readers which makes the readers want to read more. The Landlady is mystery story written by Roald
Dahl and incorporates lots of foreshadowing. The first foreshadowing I found was when Bill pressed
the doorbell and in a second, the Landlady popped out of the door – according to the Landlady text,
lines 113– 118. This seems weird because normally you have to wait half– minute before the door
opens (lines 119–120) but this seems like she is waiting next to door so someone would show up.
Next, one foreshadowing you may have missed was when the Landlady interrupted what Billy was
saying and was trying to change the topic, according to lines 363– 373, "Now wait a minute," he
said. "Wait just a minute. Mulholland ... Christopher Mulholland ... wasn't that the name of the Eton
schoolboy who was on a walking–tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden ..."– Billy
Milk?" she said. "And sugar?"– Landlady. She was trying to change the conversation which is pretty
weird the reader will start suspecting if the Landlady is hiding something. Furthermore, according to
lines 423–424, the Landlady says, "You have the most beautiful

The suspense gives an anxious and intrigued feeling when you are reading the story. The
psychological aspect messes with your mind in a way that you don't know what is going to happen

have started to happen in the story. These three things are what makes a horror story good to read.

In King's stories he has people being killed in different ways, but also doesn't have a lot of it
throughout his stories. One story is "Popsy" which is where a guy owes someone money and takes

is, " He bucked and fought and lunged for the door, panting and uttering weird bird like cries." The
reason he is uttering bird like cries is because he is a vampire and is trying to call for his Popsy to
rescue him. The grotesque of Poe's stories is that he leaves little to the imagination, makes it easy to
see what is going to happen next, and has a lot of grotesque all throughout his stories. One of his
stories is "Raven" which is where a guy loses his girl and a raven comes and tells him nevermore

us as humans like to experience fear. We read and view scary stories so we can experience artificial
situations of "fight or flight." These scenarios, whether real or imagined, get your body ready for
action by giving you an extra dose of adrenaline. The thrill and suspense that hangs over us while

of the writers descent towards the rail way track"[the path] became oozier and wetter as I went

Every Thanksgiving cook's worst nightmare is something going wrong with the turkey. It's the
centerpiece of the meal and what people are most looking forward to. Having a fully cooked turkey
means that as a cook you've bypassed the first potential horror story, but you still have to get the

for her entire extended family. She and her teenaged daughter were in the kitchen and she was
taking the turkey from the roasting pan to put it on a serving dish, except the turkey slipped and
crashed to the floor. Mother and daughter looked at each other with mouths gaping, but then the
mother picked the turkey up with both hands and put it on the serving platter. She looked at her
daughter again and uttered with quiet steel, "Nothing happened."

Influence Of Romanticism In The Contemporary Shows True...

  • 1. Influence of Romanticism in the Contemporary Shows True... Imagine a life in the 18th century when a revolution is taking place that exercises freedom, emotional liberty and importance of oneself. When the Romantic Era hit many individuals were becoming aware of a movement of intense emotion and became interested in unfamiliar and exotic experiences. Many of these experiences in which, brought to light a whole new world of darkness and strong emotions such as apprehension and terror. Romanticism in the 18th century sparked imagination; Imagination that was perceived as the "ultimate power" (see reference). Fast forwarding to contemporary culture, many of these examples of romanticism are seen in shows such as True Blood, American Horror Story, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Violet is a girl that is in touch with her gothic side and is more interested in the mansion than scared of it. Violet is misunderstood by many but she likes Tate because he understands her. Violet says to Tate "I used to think you were like me. You were attracted to the darkness. But Tate, you are the darkness." This is when she realizes that he is not among the living like she is. There is a scene where she cannot withstand the pressures anymore and Tate finds her cutting herself. Tate says "You're doing it wrong, if you're trying to kill yourself you cut vertically, they can't stitch that up". Tate loves Violet, so he does not mind if she dies because that would mean he can stay with her in the mansion forever. That quote coming from Tate would surprise anyone who hears it because it's a different and creepy type of love that Tate feels for Violet because he wishes death upon someone he loves. I believe that Romanticism is displayed here in the sense that Violet wants emotional liberty and has a special ghost that supports her through it. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas portrays a more kid–friendly aspect of Romanticism. The imagination behind this movie is remarkable and paints unfamiliar pictures but since it is animated it takes away from it being so scary to more funny. A good portion of the movie is expressed in music and the lyrics to the songs are eye–opening to say the least. When Jack leaves his Halloween ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Analysis: Can You Survive A Horror Story My final project, Can You Survive a Horror Story is a hyperfiction slasher narrative. The story is narrated in first person: the reader is Alex, a college girl spending a weekend away with her friends. As the story progresses, Alex and her friends begin to be hunted down and killed. In terms of language, the story was written using very informal language. Since the story is about teenagers, and is narrated by one, the use of colloquial language seemed appropriate. The story is structured in a way that it has one single beginning. As the murders commence, however, the reader is presented with choices, in the form of different hyperlinks. Depending on what the reader chooses, they either die or survive. Since the goal of the story is to survive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is one scenario, for example, where Cheryl survives. For that to happen, the reader would have to choose to stay with Cheryl in the bedroom instead of going to see the neighbor. After the reader dies, if they choose to go to the afterlife, they'll read how Cheryl escaped and survived. I am aware that Cheryl's survival is built on a specific scenario that not necessarily all readers would land. The reason I chose to organize the story this way, is so each reader can have its own experience while reading the story – in accordance with Landow's idea of each reader creating its own path. Despite it being a linear narrative, the reader can choose how and when the story ends. Another feature included in the story is metafiction. After the first murder, Alex realizes she is in a horror story. With that realization, Alex begins to talk directly to the reader, pleading for help or criticizing bad choices. Alex even condemns the writer, denouncing the cliches in the story, and noting how some events in the story are similar to what happens in other horror ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Horror Stories by Stevenson and Greene Essay Horror Stories by Stevenson and Greene Horror stories are an excellent traditional genre. This genre has been around for almost as long as stories have been told. In this generation there is not much that can really scare us, but what does actually make a good horror story? Horror stories need to have a good and intimidating storyline, it needs to play on people's fears, it also needs to give its audience a real thrill and send chills down their spines. The horror story may be based on phobias, superstitions, murder or science fiction. Horror stories that involve science can be really scary sometimes, as this modern world is vastly developing, and we sometimes wonder what science can do. If a relatively small atom bomb can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with the imagery used, the setting whereby the horror takes its place is an important part of a horror story. This also helps create a daunting atmosphere. Also a specific setting maybe associated with horror such as a graveyard or a marooned big castle, when this type of setting is used it creates an even better atmosphere, as the reader recognises the setting and associates it with horror. In successful horror stories assorted types of characters is used, this mixture is fairly important in the making of a good horror story. This mixture is imperative as using various characters allows the author to explore different aspects of people's personalities, which can be used to explore the menacing side of people's personality, and the author can also explore how other humans interact with the scary side to someone's personality. A type of character that is very common in horror stories is the sinister, obsessive character; this is usually the villain of the story. This character creates the tension in the storyline and may be the main character of the story, there are exceptions and sometimes the obsessive character may not be the villain. Another character there usually is in horror stories is the weak, unbalanced character, who doesn't really use much initiative, this character is sometimes a good target for the villain, and this weak, character is also usually innocent, but may be overpowered by ... • 7. An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Essay An Exploration of Gothic Horror Stories Gothic horror is a type of romantic, horror fiction based on irrational fear that predominated in 18th century England. The term 'gothic' originated from the architectural style of the middle ages, but came to describe the dark, terrifying tales that achieved such popularity. Gothic horror can be determined by many things which exist in all gothic horror stories, for example eerie settings such as gothic monasteries, bleak comfortless castles, grave yards and cobwebbed rooms lit by guttering candles. It can also be determined by a unique character such as a beast, monster, ghost, evil creature and innocent person. Usually the innocent person is killed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All three stories were written in the 19th century. They were all set at the same time when they were written. This is a good effect because at the time when they were written, horror stories containing superstition and the macabre were popular because the people at that time believed in witchcraft, ghosts and demons. The location of the action is of great importance in the gothic novel because it creates an atmosphere and feeling to the story. 'The Judges House' is located in the dining room of an old, quiet and isolated house. An old, rambling, heavy built house, this creates a scary atmosphere thus matching the typical setting of a gothic horror story. It goes on to describe the dining room as a, room in darkness, this also creates a scary and terrifying atmosphere because you cant see in the dark and you don't know what's in the dark, this also is an essential gothic horror element because darkness creates a creepy and scary atmosphere. 'The Tell Tale Heart' is located in a house that is probably old as a lantern is used by the narrator, this creates a scary atmosphere like the 'Judges House' because you cant see in the dark and you don't know what is in the darkness so the reader imagines things that create the scary atmosphere, ... • 11. A Short Story : The Purpose Of A Horror Story The purpose of a horror story is to entertain and scare the reader into believing that fictional stories could happen in real life. The ending to a horror story can either make the story or break the story, leaving the author with the task of creating an ending as horrifying as the story that was just read. There are many different ways an author can craft an ending to their horror story in order to accentuate the works' horrific effects. The different endings are shown throughout four different authors and five different works. Different themes, motifs, and symbols have all been used in order to bring horrific works to life for the readers, but their effects all come together to induce fear and strengthen the endings of the stories, leaving readers and viewers with frightening images of the fate that found the main characters. The different works use themes of unavoidable fate, hopelessness, and ambiguity to strengthen the horrific effects in the endings of their stories. In Daphne du Maurier's, "Don't Look Now," the ending raises the hopes of the audience that there will be a happy ending for John and his family, only to have it taken away in a cruel twist of fate. The short story is centered around John and Laura, a couple who is on holiday after the devastation of losing their daughter to a deadly bout of meningitis. After meeting twins in Venice who claim to be psychic, Laura is ecstatic by their claims that the blind twin could see their late daughter happily between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Transformations In Horror Story : House Taken Over By... Transformations in Horror Stories The fear creeping up my skin as goosebumps begin to appear with the first steps into a haunted house filled with monsters, screams, and darkness. The weird smells and sounds and occasional air blasts lead to a rush or adrenaline, which create a dreadful sensation. The idea of having someone creep up behind me causes my spine to tingle and the hairs on my neck to rise. Fear is an inevitable emotion that comes in various forms whether it be monsters, Gothic elements, or transformations within stories. Through the three short stories, the readers are introduced to the effects that the transformations in the mood, characters, and setting have on the tension and build of fear in the readers. Changes in the mood can affect how the reader views a story and the aura that the story gives off whether it be a calming or spooky feeling. In the short story "House Taken Over" by Julio Cortazar, the author conveys a change in the mood through an ordinary environment with ordinary characters that are suddenly disturbed by elements of fantasy, which builds up a feeling of uncertainty in the readers. One night, the narrator hears noises from the other side of their house as "the sound came through muted and indistinct" (39). The idea that the noises might return and take over more sections should stir an emotion of paranoia, completely different from the previous mood of tranquility; however, the narrator and Irene seem to believe that this is normal and ... • 15. Horror Story Research Paper Horror stories have multiple effects on everyone. Some people loved to be scared to have the fight– or–flight response. Others don't like to be scared because sometimes it can sometimes permanently make you scared of something and you'll never be able to do it again. Horror movies and stories do have to throw in some twists and turns that are scary just to keep the audience interested so they will keep watching the movie or reading the story. In stories like "beware: don't read this poem", they say, "The U.S bureau of missing persons report... 100,000 people disappeared." It shows that people get lost all the time and sometimes they just get lost in something and can't get out. It doesn't mean that they get lost literally, it means they may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It wasn't suspected when the girl was happy and all was good. Just like that, the door suddenly opened and the doll was up on a shelf. Well, she then touched the doll and all you can see is her moving her eyes and showing that she is a doll. It transformed from being all happy and going good, to bad and now she can't move and being scared. I've seen many movies where transformation plays a big role in the scary part of the movie. Just like it was in the movie "The Sixth Sense" when it plays out like Malcolm is real the whole time. Just at the end, it shows Malcolm was a ghost the whole time which was shocking to everyone. It just twisted the audience's mind when that happened at the end of the movie. Transformation in that movie is what made everyone want to keep watching to figure out how and why something in the movie happened. In conclusion, transformation plays a big role in movies and stories, especially in horror. It keeps the audience interested in the movie or story and it keeps them on their toes to figure out how and why that certain thing may have happened a way it did. So ask this, how would a movie or story be like without transformation in it? Do you think it would be as good as movies and stories today that have transformation in ... World War II was uprising and the Nazis were scattered all over Germany, they were taking hundreds of thousands of Jews each day. They were being taken to camps that no one ever returned from. The only people who did end up surviving, were those who escaped, and the stories that were being told by the escapers were a living horror story. In a small house, which was a faded blue color with missing roof pieces and slightly cracked windows, was a Jewish family of six with only two bedrooms to share and a living room that could barely fit three people. No one knew what day it was or what time it was but it was probably in late January, they had missed Hanukkah. It was then about 10:00 pm and all the kids were sleeping besides for Klara, she was looking around in the dark, small place in the basement, she was wondering if she and the kids would make it through World War II, if they did where they would go (because for all they knew Claudia could have been dead) and how would they live. • 19. American Horror Story American Horror Story is a television show created by the brilliant Ryan Murphy. The show has an interesting format which consisted of every season being a new story with new characters. Sometimes actors would come back with new parts, and others would leave and come back later. This format keeps the show fresh and interesting, with each season feeling like a new show completely. Season 3 of American Horror Story was labeled "Coven." A season set in New Orleans involving two tribes of witches, both of which being said to have sprang from Salem. At first this had confused me, are they saying all magic comes from Tituba in Salem? Europe has a history of magic, this doesn't make sense. After finding an interview with Ryan Murphy, he explained that it was just that one bloodline had come from Salem, but that there were other bloodlines that had come from other areas as well. • 21. The Horror Story Of Slender Man Coming into the 21st century, we have come up with a new way to shed light upon one of our scariest nightmares. The new "boogeyman" that has swept across the nation and the world is called, Slenderman. He is an unusually tall and slender man dressed in a nice suit. He doesn't seem scary at first until you see his, well, lack of a face. Even then, he doesn't seem that scary until you hear the stories. Slenderman stalks and psychologically torments his victims (who are usually children) for long periods of time until he takes his victim in his long tentacles, which grow from his shoulder blades, and he drags them to another dimension where he consumes them ("Slender Man" The Wiki). These tales are just scary stories to strike a new fear into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For young, immature minds the "evidence" can be compelling; YouTube documentaries have been created (Slender Suits by fxscreamer), many forums and websites have "pictures" of Slenderman (creepypasta, SomethingAwful, Tumblr etc.), and stories written by non–proffessional sources from several other websites. For those who look further into it, evidence disproving all of this is easily found. If someone were to look up the true origin of Slenderman, it is clearly stated that it is a fictional character created for a photo contest. After the attempted murder of the Wisconsin girl, Something Awful even created an article (as blunt and unfeeling as it may be) telling people where Slenderman originates from and pleading with people to not be stupid and kill in Slenderman's name (Parsons). Using the baloney detection kit (or any form of common sense for that matter), any "evidence" that Slenderman is real, is unsubstantial, as it is. Photographs, stories and videos are all dismissible due to how easily they can be manipulated into fallacies. The substantial evidence for the existence of a Slenderman type creature is truly ... The story 'vacancy', consists of a romantic couple and their experience with crime, however both characters are withholding large secrets from one another. I was influenced by the TV series Pretty Little Liars and American Horror Story as they both contain murder and supernatural themes. The purpose of this narrative was to develop my writing skills by creating my first crime story while avoiding cliché. The goal was to portray a realistic relationship with an underlying serial killer theme. • 25. Society : A Horror Story Essay Society: A horror story. Human beings, as a whole, have generated more than enough speculation as to the origins of mortal nature. Why are we they way we are? Why do we do the things we do or feel the way we feel? Scientists and philosophers have almost always dedicated their causes to the study of biology or religion, continuously giving humanity's gender, sexuality and identity a basis from a scientific or religious perspective. Science is supposed to be correct. After all, that IS the basis of science. Yet how many times has the world thought to be flat and proved wrong? And the sun, which was thought to be revolving around the earth, was proven incorrect? The theory of social construction seems to be a new introduction to the way we see the world. It is largely possible that a brainwashing through society and media plays a large part of the social disparity between men and women or straight and queer people. Perhaps the innate idea that declares from such a young age that we are to be brought up based on our gender truly has very little to do with science and is instead, based on us as a human race? Social construction theory plays on this idea, accusing society of indoctrination through media, literature, and a sense of 'normalcy' A standard view gender's will cause a belief that a mother is made to be maternal, a caregiver, a kind and weak aura while much opposite to the father figure, who is meant to be a brute of physical strength and intelligence. American Horror Story is a horror– drama anthology series created by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy that frequently bastardized history and folklore by terrorizing its viewers. It has consistently kept fans on their toes. The series has often nodes to the coming season's theme with hints on its finales, as well as pre–season promos, teasers, and advertisements that loosely provide context for the upcoming season, commonly avoiding or limiting text in their advertisements. American Horror Story: Cult is based on the "hive mentality," where people lose their individuality from a type of brainwashing, where people are manipulated through their fears. As such, the marketing campaign for American Horror Story: Cult is widely successful and deliberately tries to invoke a sense of fear, uneasiness, and horror in their viewers. As a reference to this, American Horror Story: Cult's advertisements are focused on marketing toward two main phobias; coulrophobia and trypophobia. In my opinion the best shows are the ones that are funny, a bit relatable, have great character development, and overall just uplift your spirits. Shows like this are hard to come by; there are some old ones that I've come to enjoy such as Friends and The Office, but lately I have yet to find a show that fits my normal preferences. I have spent months watching Friends over and over again, but that gets boring after a while, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and find a show I wouldn't usually watch. I decided to try American Horror Story completely aware that it doesn't fit into what I normally look for. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the show. It's has some scary moments, but nothing too horrifying. The setting, mood, music, characters, and general atmosphere of the show is meant to give a spooky vibe and does just that, but it also goes much deeper and appeases all kinds of audiances. The American Horror Story wasn't created to be funny, and while it has its moments, for the most part it's not. However, it is very engaging. • 37. Compare And Contrast The American Horror Story And The... American Horror Story and the Amazing World of Gumball Compared Ryan Murphy's anthology American Horror Story shows a side of evil and darkness that none of us could ever imagine. Ben Bocquelet's animated TV show The Amazing World of Gumball represents that unordinary, innocent part of ourselves that we often forget about. In this paper, I will be comparing the similarities and the differences of the two, drastically different shows. American Horror Story (AHS) has a malevolent, dystopian view on the environment and those in it, while The Amazing World of Gumball (Gumball) tries to pull off a more welcoming, friendly stance. AHS tends to focus more on the negatives and the evil in the world like murder, illegal drugs, alcohol, lying, manipulation, and abuse. The show's story can be written in some of the bluntest ways as possible. There is no beating around the bush or hiding under the blanket. Gumball gives a display of happiness and a fantasy of what our childhoods could be like. The joy and fun of being a child is shown in a way that younger kids tend to overlook. The view of the show normally comes off as "fun, innocent humor." AHS's way of presentation is meant to give off an antiutopian type of reality to appeal to those who enjoy or find interest in the twisted side of life. Gumball is animated the way it is to have a stronger appeal to children and give off that vibe of utopia and being carefree. AHS's characters' contain those dark, gloomy characteristics that ... Running Rulers: The Running Rules Of American Horror Story 7 The Running Rules of American Horror Story Series creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that AHS: Cult will not feature any supernatural elements, which makes this the first season in the show's history to so. Every season of the show so far has included either ghosts, vampires, witchcraft, psychics, possession, or magic, all built around the running rules of the American Horror Story universe. For example, in this world ghosts are subject to specific rules; they are bound to the location that they died in and can have interactions with the living if they chose to do so. They can only move around on Devil's Night. Sometimes the ghosts appear with the injuries they died from but other times they appear to look normal. • 41. Scooby Doo : Suspicion : The Horrors Of The Story? You'll Never Guess Suspicion is demonstrated at its finest in great works of mystery. Scooby Doo is a wonderful example of silly mysteries, entertaining the audience with different suspects in a criminal scenario. The audience can speculate and try to guess who committed the crime throughout the entire story, paying attention to the hints that the author, or constructor of the story, gives them. If an audience member can learn how to pay attention to little details that the author is giving them, and pick up on small things that are being said by certain people, they can often come to find out who is the suspect, or at least come very close. This is part of what makes mysteries so entertaining. Furthermore, the author can make their mystery even more interesting by leading the reader in a certain direction. They can persuade the reader to believe that a certain person is guilty by dropping hints here and there. In Paul Haven's excerpt from "The Curse of the Poisoned Pretzel", Haven leads the reader to believe that Skidmore is guilty of poisoning his brother Manchester by describing Skidmore's background, Manchester's background, and Skidmore's later actions. Haven starts by creating an evil mood about Skidmore, describing in detail his physical and emotional background. Skidmore is characterized in this story as being extremely scrawny. He had recognized those names stated in the guest book. He had thought he may have seen there names before, possibly a newspaper or something. International news reported Kikuyu attacks on settlers as "fanatical," "degraded," "bestial," and "satanic" (Robbins 295). Such press reports denied the Mau Mau rebels their own voice in the international conversation and turned potential sources of support against them. However, just as the press has the power to deny support to indigenous resistance, so it can lend support. Those that are protested against may not understand the protest; Robbins writes that the British could think of no reason that the Mau Mau would rebel, and so they blamed the Mau Mau oath (Robbins 297). When two cultures collide, it is reasonable to assume that one (or both) will not understand the other; there is often little attempt to understand the indigenous culture, as shown by missionary attempts to educate indigenous people away from their traditional cultures. The inability to understand each other, or perhaps the lack of an attempt to, may also be a leading cause for the violent reactions that foreign parties have had to indigenous resistance. The Huaorani are such a small group that open rebellion like the Mau Mau's would be totally illogical. Instead, they have tried going the legal route, and, in doing so, have attempted to create a cross–cultural understanding by educating the leaders of ONHAE to interact with outsiders. • 47. Elements Of Horror Stories Hattie Sparks Sharon A. Russell explains to readers how to decipher horror stories by saying, "Some students think that the best way to examine it is to deal with the way horror fiction is organized or structured. Examining the organization of a horror story shows that it shared certain traits with other types of fiction.". She says this in her article "What is a Horror Story". Horror fiction needs to be in a certain order, structured, and have specific horror traits. Some essential traits to horror she later talks about, are supernatural elements, eerie settings, and suspense. When these elements interact horror is created. "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs is a horror story because, of the supernatural paw, the setting, and suspense of the story. One important element of horror is a supernatural trait, which "The Monkey's Paw" does indeed have. The main supernatural trait would be the paw itself. The history of the paw is stated, by Sergeant–Major Morris, to have had a spell placed on it by a fakir. Sergeant Morris, also told the readers how all the previous six wishes were answered. Multiple wishes answered using the same process, could not be coincidence. Another reason that this story fits into the supernatural trait is how Mr. White describes his experience using the paw. He states, "it twisted in my hand like a snake"(pg 110). 'The Body–Snatcher' is a more typical horror story containing many of these things that I have mentioned. On the other hand, 'The End Of The Party' differs to 'The Body–Snatcher', with it being more to do with the mind and appearing quite everyday, and not containing as many of the typical horror components. But both 'The Body–Snatcher' and 'The End Of The Party' can be placed in the horror genre as they contain the vital components that make a good horror story. 'The Body–Snatcher' is quite self–explanatory in the title and is about body snatching. It begins "in the small parlour of the George at Debenham" where we meet the main character, Fettes. Fettes has an encounter with someone from his past – Macfarlane, who he is obviously not pleased to see for reasons unknown to the reader at this stage. At the mention of Macfarlane's name "Fettes became instantly sober", this immediately tells the reader of something that has gone on in the past that may have been unpleasant to ... • 62. Examples Of Foreshadowing In Horror Stories A key element in horror stories is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing will make readers want to read more and it will also create suspense. Foreshadowing is nearly same in horror stories. Foreshadowing in horror stories such as "THE LANDLADY", "THE MONKEY'S PAW" and "THE TELL– TALE HEARTS" and "The Hitchhiker" are very important and creates suspense for the readers which makes the readers want to read more. The Landlady is mystery story written by Roald Dahl and incorporates lots of foreshadowing. The first foreshadowing I found was when Bill pressed the doorbell and in a second, the Landlady popped out of the door – according to the Landlady text, lines 113– 118. This seems weird because normally you have to wait half– minute before the door opens (lines 119–120) but this seems like she is waiting next to door so someone would show up. Next, one foreshadowing you may have missed was when the Landlady interrupted what Billy was saying and was trying to change the topic, according to lines 363– 373, "Now wait a minute," he said. "Wait just a minute. Mulholland ... Christopher Mulholland ... wasn't that the name of the Eton schoolboy who was on a walking–tour through the West Country, and then all of a sudden ..."– Billy Milk?" she said. "And sugar?"– Landlady. She was trying to change the conversation which is pretty weird the reader will start suspecting if the Landlady is hiding something. Furthermore, according to lines 423–424, the Landlady says, "You have the most beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Poe Vs. King: The Three Things That Make A Horror Story Joel Delp Mrs. Dutcher English 11 4 December 2015 Poe vs. King The three things that make a horror story is the suspense, the psychological feeling, and the grotesque parts that are in the story. The suspense gives an anxious and intrigued feeling when you are reading the story. The psychological aspect messes with your mind in a way that you don't know what is going to happen or what is happening. And the grotesque part of the story tells you about the ugly and bad things that have started to happen in the story. These three things are what makes a horror story good to read. The suspense of horror in both King and Poe's stories was good. The suspense in King's stories is they go in flashbacks and don't go in the order the way things happen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In King's stories he has people being killed in different ways, but also doesn't have a lot of it throughout his stories. One story is "Popsy" which is where a guy owes someone money and takes kids to get the money, but this time he finds a kid who isn't like the others. A quote from this story is, " He bucked and fought and lunged for the door, panting and uttering weird bird like cries." The reason he is uttering bird like cries is because he is a vampire and is trying to call for his Popsy to rescue him. The grotesque of Poe's stories is that he leaves little to the imagination, makes it easy to see what is going to happen next, and has a lot of grotesque all throughout his stories. One of his stories is "Raven" which is where a guy loses his girl and a raven comes and tells him nevermore and makes the guy made and he tries to kill the raven but can't. How is tension and suspense built up and maintained in at least two Gothic horror stories? The genre of Gothic Horror was developed during 19th and early 20th century and had a popular appeal to the new middle class people who sought entertainment.
