The criteria in the Horror Genre essay applies to other stories in the Thrill Of Horror unit by the
source of the horror, if it comes from inside or outside the character, or if something in general
goes wrong. Some people like to define horror by its subjects. For example, if there are any
monsters, a parallel universe somewhere out there, if something is wrong inside the character like

When the sergeant attempted to throw it into the fire, Mr. White took it and wanted to know how
to get a wish from it, which obviously told us he was going to wish for something. Mr. White

A Short Story : The Purpose Of A Horror Story
The purpose of a horror story is to entertain and scare the reader into believing that fictional stories
could happen in real life. The ending to a horror story can either make the story or break the story,
leaving the author with the task of creating an ending as horrifying as the story that was just read.
There are many different ways an author can craft an ending to their horror story in order to
accentuate the works' horrific effects. The different endings are shown throughout four different
authors and five different works. Different themes, motifs, and symbols have all been used in order
to bring horrific works to life for the readers, but their effects all come together to induce fear and
strengthen the endings of the stories, leaving readers and viewers with frightening images of the fate
that found the main characters. The different works use themes of unavoidable fate, hopelessness,
and ambiguity to strengthen the horrific effects in the endings of their stories. In Daphne du Maurier

Unlike The Red Room and The Monkey's Paw, the setting of "The Telltale Heart is not significant
to building up suspense; however there are a few elements that do. How is tension and suspense
built up and maintained in at least two Gothic horror stories? The genre of Gothic Horror was
developed during 19th and early 20th century and had a popular appeal to the new middle class
people who sought entertainment. Gothic Horror has common characteristics of suspense, fear and

the horrific sight of Herbert with the remnants of his grave on his disfigured body. The trail
approaching the tracks in "The Signalman" is a "zig zag descending path". Tension is increased
by the description of the writers descent towards the rail way track"[the path] became oozier and
wetter as I went down". This gives the reader the feeling of sluggishness; the image slows the

All the park lights were off and there was nobody else around. Again I heard another sound of
footsteps. They became louder and louder which gave me the idea of someone coming closer. I

Can you really identify what a horror story is? A horror story does not have to have a vampire, or

Billy notices in the guest book that there has not been a guest at the inn for over two years.
Automatically, Billy starts to question if he should stay; however he, ends up disregarding it.
This is suspense because, at most hotels and inns, there is usually more the one guest staying at a
time. While this is just a bed and breakfast, and there could only be one guest there, it is quite odd
for two years to go by without any guests. Then, Billy had a second thought. He had recognized
those names stated in the guest book. He had thought he may have seen there names before,
possibly a newspaper or something. The second Billy brought this up in conversation, the old
women ignored him and, the topic was not brought up again. It is also odd for the women to not
say a thing about the previous guests. At the beginning of the story, Billy strolls through a run
down neighborhood. After that he finds this Bed and Breakfast. As Billy is walking up to the
house, he gets this strange feeling of doubt. This odd feeling was almost preventing him from
wanting to go inside the bed and breakfast. Billy almost turned around and headed back toward the
hotel he was heading to. However, he ended up ignoring this, and headed on in to the bed and

They told him the house was haunted. They told him the house was strange. Five families had
moved in, and never made it out. Alive anyway. He had already survived two days with his family.

The boy stirs in his sleep. A pale, vaporous moon lights the room. Shadows are deep. He twists his
