Task 3
1. Task 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
2. What does a production company do? Production company - responsible for the development and physical production; may also be responsible for raising of funding. Pitch to studios/distributors Finds the writers and write several drafts of the screenplay They hire the whole crew Production companies, essentially, are involved from start to finish.
3. The Production company logos you have chosen and or created and why? We chose the name ‘Ricochet Studios’ for our production company because it is a word associated with guns and warfare, similar to the genre of our film; a thriller. We did not use a logo but the titles were the same font as the name as the film in our opening sequence. We did this to give a repetitive aspect to the film, and we felt if the font changed it would look unprofessional.
4. What does a distributor do? Responsible for releasing films to the public/home viewing Need a written contract regarding the amount of the gross ticket sales to be paid to the distributor by the exhibitor The distributor is responsible for ensuring a full line of film advertising material is available on each film which it believes will help the exhibitor attract the largest possible audience. May have to dub/subtitle the film for different audiences.
5. Why you have chosen the distribution companies you have to release your film ? If we had a distributor, we would have chosen Universal Studios. This is because Universal is one of the most successful distributors' around, and one of the most popular/well known among the public, meaning a larger audience would be attracted to our film. Universal also have a well known theme and logo which most of the public would be able to relate to. It was founded in 1912 and ever since then has been extremely successful. It is part of Hollywood, one of the best for film producing. It is the second-longest-lived Hollywood studio.
6. Why you have chosen the distribution companies you have to release your film ? Furthermore, Universal have released many thrillers such as ‘Jaws’. We feel our psychological thriller ‘Slice’ would appeal to Universal Studios because it contains suspense, tension and excitement throughout. These three aspects are key in audiences in theatres these days, and we feel it will attract more and more of the public to watch the film.
7. How might your film have been funded? Similar films, such as ‘Broken’ and ‘The Dentist’ are fairly low budget thrillers. We feel our film would not need to big of a budget because the settings/locations would be easy to find and set up. Costumes and props would not be to much of a problem and there wouldn’t be too many special effects. Some of the money would come from the distributor and the production companies.
