7. DISTRIBUTION
Once the film has been made and finished editing, the next stage is to distribute the film to
cinemas all over the world (depending on how popular the film is estimated to be). This is
often achieved through film distributors. These companies may distribute a film to film festivals,
DVD release and Cinemas depending on where they think it will get the best success. The role
of these film distributors is to get the film to as many different people as possible to ensure
the best result so this means that for a film it will usually have more than one film distributor
distributing their film as this will mean that more places can get the film to them. These
distributors will often go to film festivals and source out new films that they can distribute to
get them more money and possibly find a film that could become the next biggest thing.
9. UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Universal pictures do a lot of different types of films.
These can range from kids films to horrors.Their main
focus however seems to be horror/thriller types of films.
Examples of this are films such as‘Pacific Rim’,Fast and
Furious series, Jurassic world series,The mummy etc.
Given our film however is of a low-budget,it would not
get as wide of a release as some of the higher end films.
It would most likely only distribute to the UK and
appear in more independent arthouse cinemas. They do
however not distribute many low-budget films but may
be interested in our film given that it is a very unique
idea and there are not that many films like this around at
the moment. They may not however be so interested
because we don’t have any experience in making films
before and the equipment we have and the cast are all
very amateur so it would not look as good as a
professionally made film.
10. FILM 4
Film 4 mainly focus on very independent
films and offer a wide selection of
genres to choose from.These however
mainly focus on horrors as that is what
a lot of independent film makers choose
to create films about. This could mean
that they are more likely to produce our
film because it is similar to what they
have already produced before and so
they know that the ideas will most likely
work for the audiences that they have
created. This could also be the reason
however why they wouldn't because
they have loads of films in this genre
already.Film 4 also are known to show
independent films along side much
larger titles. Some of the larger films
they have done include ‘127 hours’ and
‘12 years a slave’.
11. PART 3 - WHY WOULD FILM 4
DISTRIBUTE MY PRODUCT?
12. FILM 4
• Film4 have a good reputation in the filming industry for distributing films, some of
which turn out to be very successful which you wouldn't normally think would. This is
important because given that our film is low budget it is important that we get a
distributor with a good reputation for distributing low cost films and having them get
very popular and well known.Film4 commonly distribute to15-24 year olds with
films/TV series likeThe Inbetweeners. This was a classATV series/movie and was not
expected to get the response it did. This is good for us because it is the same type of
audience age range as ours and so they already have a similar fan base to the one we
are aiming at. Our film opening however is not backed up by any fan base and so is a big
risk for the company to distribute as it is not certain if it is going to be a success and
sell enough copies to get a profit back to the company. However,I do believe that this is
the type of film that Film 4 may be interested in so therefore could distribute my film.
14. My film could be advertised in a few different ways, for example; on the side of a
bus, at a tube station or even on a big billboard beside the road. These would
however cost a fair bit to do so may not be the best option but here’s what they
could look like.
16. DISTRIBUTION
My product would most likely be distributed online. The reasons for this are
because with the growing cost of having films produced for cinema viewing it
would be much harder to get the film in a cinema. The reasons why it would be
good to have it online is because there are more and more sites now that can
give independent film makers a chance in the ever growing market of films like
this. It would also be good because it is a much easier way for people to view a
film that they normally wouldn't see giving it the best chance to get noticed. The
film could then move over toTV for example and be shown on channels like Film
4 which are known for having some popular independent films on their channel
that may have once started out like ours. Overall I feel like being distributed
online first would give the film the best success it could have given the audience
its for, budget we have available and the overall quality.
