Evaluation question 3 media

 1. 1. Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
 2. 2. Why Imperial Productions?

We chose the name Imperial Productions because when we did our research on film companies, we picked out 4 big film companies like “Touchstone Pictures” and “Universal.” The word touchstone means a test of quality and universal means to be connected with people around the world so we chose to go down the same route of these two companies by thinking of a name with a meaning we want to represent in our productions because the meaning of imperial is to have a commanding quality, manner or aspect.

 3. 3. What does a production company do?

Watch the clip on this website to understand what a production company does:

 4. 4. Film Distributors

A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for releasing films to the public either theatrically or for home viewing.

What a Distribution Company does:

After master print of finished film is delivered to local distributor the distributor determines the release strategy and release date.

Distributor presents the film to exhibitors and negotiates bilateral agreements to have the film shown in cinemas.

Distributor’s marketing campaign creates a “want to se” buzz among the target audience and launches the film.

Prints are delivered a few days before the opening.

Film’s run extends any number of weeks subject to demand.

This website shows the list of distrbution companies in some countries:

I believe that because our film would be released from an unknown production company that we would use a small UK production company to save on costs.

 5. 5. Film Investment

Film finance is an aspect of film production that occurs before pre-production, and is concerned with determining the potential value of a proposed film.

This website gives you information about different sources of film funding:

http:// /

For a movie like ours I believe that to get investment we would have to take our package to a film festival such as the London Film Festival where the people with ideas meet up with the people with money, in the hope that a deal may be struck.

 6. 6. Movie Titles

People are named in movie titles because of their importance to the creation of a film e.g. the director, writer and Star actors etc and other people who are not as important to the film but still play a part are named in the credits.

We tried to use this in our film and although we could have included more titles we decided to just put the jobs that we thought were most important.

 7. 7. Films that are similar “institutionally”

I believe our film would be released in a similar way to such films as “scarface” and “Carlito’s Way” because both of these films are of the same genre and style.

 8. 8. Points to consider

Would this be something that could be produced by a major Hollywood Studio?

I believe that this film could be produced by a major film studio as right now there are no existing products which are similar and in the past films of similar a similar genre to our film have gone on to be big successes.

Would it be a TV film, or an art house film?

I believe it would be a TV film because we want to be aiming this at a mass audience rather than a specific group of people.

Would it be an internet release only?

No, I believe that our film would be exhibited in cinemas around the world.

Where would it be released?

I believe that our film would be released in the cinema to audiences around the world.

How would it be advertised and marketed?

Our film would be advertised on television, we would have posters on bus shelters and buses, links to our film on big websites etc.

Are there opportunities for merchandising?

I believe that there are opportunities for marketing but as our film is targeting a teenage to adult audience we would be making posters and clothes that are incorporated with our film rather than making toys and games which are more targeted for children
