Media Evaluation
REECE POLLOCK
Introduction
My advanced media project this year was a music video for
the song Sorry by Justin Bieber. As well as the music video I
had to make a CD cover, insert booklet and a webpage for
the artist. My aim for the music video and 2 ancillary tasks
was to create an in-depth experience for the audience where
they can find out more information about the artist and
establish a fan base.
In what way does your media
production use, develop and
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
productions?
Effects and editing:
 For my production I wanted to create an upbeat and high intensity music video
with lots of fast cuts and quick editing because it would match the nature of the
song, to do this I had to understand the types of effects that are used in a pop
music video.
 Most pop music videos are easy for the audience to understand as they are meant
to be enjoyed, they have an obvious narrative (if there is a narrative at all), this
means the audience can just watch and listen to the music. This is what I tried to
create with my music video, I wanted it to be enjoyable for the audience without
them having to try and understand the narrative of the video.
Narrative
 In my music video there is not much of an in depth narrative but there is a light
hearted narrative of 2 of the characters falling out about ideas for the music video
and then one of the characters has to apologise to the other. In the end the
characters come back together and become friends again.
 Todorov's theory of equilibrium can be applied to my music video as in the
beginning there is an equilibrium when all the characters are in the car singing
together. Then there is a disruption of the equilibrium, this is when 2 of the
characters fall out over the music video. A recognition of this occurs. And then the
characters try to repair the disequilibrium, this is when the characters are
apologising to each other. And in the end there is a restoration of a new
equilibrium, this is when the characters are seen hugging each other suggesting
that they are friends again.
Characters
 My characters can be linked to Propps character types which states there is a
protagonist, antagonist, a donor, a dispatcher, a false hero, a sidekick, the princess
and the princesses father.
 In my music video there are 3 main characters, it can be argued that all 3 of the
characters are protagonists but it can also be argued that the main character has 2
side kicks, this is shown in my album cover when the main character or
protagonist is shown in colour making him stand out however the other 2
characters or the sidekicks are shown in black and white which suggests that they
are not as important as the main character in the story line of the music video.
Mise en Scene:
 In my music video the Mise en Scene was carefully chosen to add to the
experience, it made the music video seem more daft as many teenagers drive
round singing a song is a regular thing but not many drive round wearing bright
yellow t-shirts, bandanas and sunglasses. This was designed to make to audience
laugh and show them from the beginning that this was not a serious music video.
 Another shot used to show that the music video was not a serious one was the
shots using a green screen, this was used to add in the background of the clouds
which suggests that the character was flying while singing.
Institutions
 Like all other music video, my music video has a production company that is
responsible for making to music video.
 In my music video I do not mention the production company responsible for the
creating the music video which is unusual for music videos as most music videos
mention who is responsible for creating the music video and also those who star in
it.
 To improve my music video and give it a more professional look I would include a
production company logo and also mention the production company that is
responsible for the creation of the music video.
CD Pack and insert
 My CD front cover is not stereotypical of a pop CD cover as most pop CD covers
use lots of bright colours and effects to create a really eye catching product that
will tempt the audience into buying the CD, however my CD cover has only one
stand out bright colour and the rest is black and white which suggests that the
artist is different to many other pop artists.
 My CD pack insert can be seen as stereotypical of a modern pop insert as it
contains photographs of behind the scenes shots from the music video shoot and
photo shoots for the album cover, this gives the audience a backstage view at what
the artist has been doing.

Media evaluation question 1

  • 2. Introduction My advanced media project this year was a music video for the song Sorry by Justin Bieber. As well as the music video I had to make a CD cover, insert booklet and a webpage for the artist. My aim for the music video and 2 ancillary tasks was to create an in-depth experience for the audience where they can find out more information about the artist and establish a fan base.
  • 3. In what way does your media production use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media productions?
  • 4. Effects and editing:  For my production I wanted to create an upbeat and high intensity music video with lots of fast cuts and quick editing because it would match the nature of the song, to do this I had to understand the types of effects that are used in a pop music video.  Most pop music videos are easy for the audience to understand as they are meant to be enjoyed, they have an obvious narrative (if there is a narrative at all), this means the audience can just watch and listen to the music. This is what I tried to create with my music video, I wanted it to be enjoyable for the audience without them having to try and understand the narrative of the video.
  • 5. Narrative  In my music video there is not much of an in depth narrative but there is a light hearted narrative of 2 of the characters falling out about ideas for the music video and then one of the characters has to apologise to the other. In the end the characters come back together and become friends again.  Todorov's theory of equilibrium can be applied to my music video as in the beginning there is an equilibrium when all the characters are in the car singing together. Then there is a disruption of the equilibrium, this is when 2 of the characters fall out over the music video. A recognition of this occurs. And then the characters try to repair the disequilibrium, this is when the characters are apologising to each other. And in the end there is a restoration of a new equilibrium, this is when the characters are seen hugging each other suggesting that they are friends again.
  • 6. Characters  My characters can be linked to Propps character types which states there is a protagonist, antagonist, a donor, a dispatcher, a false hero, a sidekick, the princess and the princesses father.  In my music video there are 3 main characters, it can be argued that all 3 of the characters are protagonists but it can also be argued that the main character has 2 side kicks, this is shown in my album cover when the main character or protagonist is shown in colour making him stand out however the other 2 characters or the sidekicks are shown in black and white which suggests that they are not as important as the main character in the story line of the music video.
  • 7. Mise en Scene:  In my music video the Mise en Scene was carefully chosen to add to the experience, it made the music video seem more daft as many teenagers drive round singing a song is a regular thing but not many drive round wearing bright yellow t-shirts, bandanas and sunglasses. This was designed to make to audience laugh and show them from the beginning that this was not a serious music video.  Another shot used to show that the music video was not a serious one was the shots using a green screen, this was used to add in the background of the clouds which suggests that the character was flying while singing.
  • 8. Institutions  Like all other music video, my music video has a production company that is responsible for making to music video.  In my music video I do not mention the production company responsible for the creating the music video which is unusual for music videos as most music videos mention who is responsible for creating the music video and also those who star in it.  To improve my music video and give it a more professional look I would include a production company logo and also mention the production company that is responsible for the creation of the music video.
  • 9. CD Pack and insert  My CD front cover is not stereotypical of a pop CD cover as most pop CD covers use lots of bright colours and effects to create a really eye catching product that will tempt the audience into buying the CD, however my CD cover has only one stand out bright colour and the rest is black and white which suggests that the artist is different to many other pop artists.  My CD pack insert can be seen as stereotypical of a modern pop insert as it contains photographs of behind the scenes shots from the music video shoot and photo shoots for the album cover, this gives the audience a backstage view at what the artist has been doing.
