Symbolism In The Cellist Of Sarajevo
Ossie Davis once said, "Any form of art is a form of power; it has an impact, it can affect change, it can not only move us, it makes us move".
Similarly, The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway tells the story of how three individuals Arrow, Dragan and Kenan suffering from the unrelenting
and ruthlessness of war are impacted by one musician's art. All three characters suffer from the war in different ways, but the art in the form of music
finds a way to connect them all. Galloway's novel illustrates that art helps lessen the suffering of those facing the brutality of war as the cellist's music
provides healing of the spirit, mind, and body. The cellist's music provides hope and inspiration to the people of Sarajevo that they will be able ... Show

Arrow's supervisor Nermin takes her to listen to the cellist as her latest assignment will be to protect him. Listening to the cellist's music elicits a
powerful response, "She leans back into the wall. She's no longer there. Her mother is lifting her up, spinning her around and laughing" (75). The
cellist's music allows her to be taken away from her daily battle with the men on the hills to a time when she didn't have to kill people and live with
constant death and destruction. Arrow gets emotional comfort as she is able to remember a moment of her childhood when she was happy and the
war had not taken her family away. Arrow's reminiscing about life before the war gives her emotional endurance as she gets a piece of a time of
happiness to cling on to during her daily battles. The memory of a time before the war aids in reducing Arrow's suffering as she is taken away from
the torture of the battlefield. Additionally, it also helps to heal her mind as she reminded of a time when she was happy and consumed with hatred.
Moreover, the cellist's music transports the people of Sarajevo to a future of comfort and happiness. While listening to the cellist play his music,
Kenan is transported to a dream sequence, "Kenan will look at his wife, and then his and younger daughter and he will know how happy he is and

The Forever War Analysis
War is a terrible, but dark truth of the world we live in today and throughout most of history. After the 9/11 attacks, America declared war and soon
after started to deploy soldiers to attack. To cover the war in a new aspect, many reports were sent to war zones to get a story for the people of
America. One of these reporters was Dexter Filkins. After his horrendous time in the war zone, Filkins made a book titled "The Forever War". In
one of the chapters, it discusses suicide bombings during the war. Filkins, was an inside eye to the war, was not a soldier, but just a citizen trying to
get a story for the rest of America. I believe Filkins wrote this chapter to show America about the continuous fear the soldiers and the civilians in the
war zone.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Filkins shows the fear when he says, "No one wanted to stand in a crowd anymore. No one wanted to stand in line anymore." (174). This shows
how not only some people fear the bombings, but that almost all people are scared, and it's stopping them to do normal daily tasks such as waiting
to get food or going to a public area for shopping. Everyday bomb squads are outside checking for possible planted bombs and checking bombing
that happened before. For Filkins to tell the story of a whole city in this chapter of the book, is remarkable alone. This adds to the message Filkins
is trying to send, by giving examples of what happens, he can make us see almost what they saw and feel what they felt. Filkins writing is very
effective in reinforcing his idea and gives it that extra punch to reach out to people to try and make them understand what is going on in the war.
There are other ways he shows the people fear too. When Filkins writes, "I'd hear that sometimes. A suicide bomber is driving around the
neighborhood, looking for a target; look out." (173). These are only two sentences, but the message in them is

Essay On Forced Internment
The forced internment of Japanese–Americans by the United States government during World War II served as a symbol of the fears and xenophobia
that both American citizens and government officials felt following the declaration of war with the empire of Japan. There was an official reason for
internment in the form of national security, but there were also many informal reasons for the action. Either way, the forced internment ofUnited States
civilians by the United States government marked a distinct executive overstep of individual rights and dismissal of the constitution.

They are not the stuff of which Americans citizens can be made.... they will not assimilate with us. (Conrat, 18)
As presented, Japanese–Americans, no matter if they participated and contributed to society, were discriminated against in a manner similar to the way
that Americans of African, Chinese, and Latino descent were. It was largely believed that anti–Japanese ideology stemmed from earlier, anti–Chinese
agitation that began to occur following California's gold rush in the 1850s (Conrat, 16) This lax form of discrimination worsened after the attacks on
Pearl Harbor. On the morning of December 7th, 1941, The Empire of Japan launched a surprise offensive against the United States' naval base at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii. They also simultaneously attacked additional U.S. bases in the Philippines and British Imperial bases in Malaya, Singapore, and
Hong Kong. The purpose of these attacks was to cripple the United States' pacific fleet and prevent it from interfering with The Empire of Japan's
aggressive actions in south–east Asia. The attacks left 3,500 Americans dead or wounded, 149 planes and two battleships destroyed, and four other
battleships heavily damaged. (Wakida, 1) Following these attacks, thePresident of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, went before congress and
asked for an immediate declaration of war against Japan. Congress obliged and the United States quickly entered World War

Carol Ann Duffy War Photographer Essay
War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is about a photographer who is struggling with the consequences and reality of war. The voice of criticism
from the experience of war combined with the use of poetic devices exposes the theme of war. The poet uses compelling and distressing illustrations
in this poem to enthrall pathos into the reader's feelings. The use of pathos stirs up emotions of pity, sympathy and sorrow. Therefore, his photographic
films are filled with images of the genuine agony caused by the bloodshed of war. The rhyme scheme is laid out in four regular six–line stanzas, with
each stanza ending in a rhyming couplet. It sets the tone to create a wonderful contrast between the positive and negative prospects of war. As the
theme of death is explored, the poet describes the photographer's mind vividly, unraveling both the atrocity of war and the indifference of those who
live in comfort.
The 1st stanza of the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In stanza one the word choice of "darkroom" represents the thoughts inside of the war photographers mind; the darkness suggests sadness and
depression in his thoughts. This idea is continued in stanza two with enjambment, "beneath his hands which did not tremble then/ though seem to
now". The enjambment creates the effect that now the war photographer is all alone as his emotions are tumbling out, the word choice of "tremble"
also suggests that the now he is alone he can let his emotions be maintained. The poet's use of enjambment is also effective as it creates the impression
that his emotions are pouring out. This idea of his career affects him emotionally as he vividly "remembers the cries" of a particular man's wife. This
highlights how he was faced in a distressful situation, amongst the wife's sorrowful. This ordeal experience is something he cannot simply forget.
Resultantly, he is affected by the survivor's guilt which he can't control

What Was The Truman Doctrine Essay
Right from the start of the Cold War, after the Second World War (1939
–1945), the European continent was split up once more and two ideologies were
considered to dominate most countries. The Truman doctrine, established in 1947 by the President of the United States of America forged the Western
bloc and put forward capitalism as a strong political ideology . Following this doctrine was the initiation of the Marshall plan, a financial and military
help, which goal was to reduce The Soviet Union's influence on eastern countries. The leading force of the Eastern bloc, the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (U.S.S.R.) answered to the United States' doctrine with the Zhdanov doctrine which divided the world between "the imperialists", the United
States and "the socialists", the Soviet Union. Communism was the ideology in the U.S.S.R. and its allied countries. Defeated after the end of the
Second World War, Germany was split in four occupation zones as it was discussed at the Potsdam Conference (July
–August 1945). The three zones
belonging to the western countries (French zone, British zone and American zone) were unified and thus opposed to the soviet zone. Berlin, a strategic
city within the eastern part of Germany, was itself divided and thus West Berlin became an enclave. In the 1950s,... Show more content on

Ptsd In Lord Of The Flies
For years, people have been living in war zones. They have both been hurt physically and mentally. Children however, suffer the most. PTSD, short for
Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder, has caused these heroic children nothing but stress and ceaseless pain. The worst part is most of these children can
never seek help, or they simply do not know that they need it. The boys in the book the Lord of the Flies were not in a war by adults but they created
their own war. While on the island, they made their own trauma and forms of PTSD.
Research says the boys should have had what the Journal of Psychological Abnormalities states as having psychopathological symptoms, and smaller
psychosocial functioning levels during their life. This goes along with the

Zain begins by telling about how he went outside one day to warm up. Then, he hears shooting for a whole 15 minutes. His hometown of Daraa was
very peaceful and lively before all the violence of ISIS started. People would go to Daraa to escape their war–torn hometowns. That changed though
when in 2011 ISIS broke out. Zain wasn't able to go to school because it wasn't safe. He was only able to leave to get essentials and had to stay inside
and watch TV for a whole year. Finally, Daraa'sfamily decided to leave and go to

Analysis Of The Memoirs Of Nurses La Motte And Borden...
TWar is ugly, tragic and brutal, but do you have to be? Can there still be compassion amongst all the chaos? After analyzing the memoirs of Nurses
La Motte and Borden during World War One, the evidence shows some can still have empathy while others lose their faith in humanity altogether.
Even though both women went through very similar experiences, La Motte becomes pessimistic while Borden does not. The Backwash of War
reveals that La Motte develops opinions like how men only see women as sex objects, medals are worthless and death is necessary, while Borden
conveys her compassion in The Forbidden Zone by describing women as beautiful, the awards are worthy of their lives, and that some deserve to die

These medals represented how meaningless the men of the regiment were. They represented inequality between men. Even thought there was
strong examples of Inequality in The backwash of War, they were focused on the inequalities of regular soldiers and the Battalion de'Affrique.
"They fight in the trenches as do the others, but with small chance of being decorated." (La Motte La Patrie Reconnaissante) However, there are
examples medals awarded for the right reasons. In The Forbidden Zone, medals are also portrayed as the highest honor possible. "'The ampute
found an envelope on his coverlet with a hundred francs in it. The General, so they said, gave all his pay to the men in this way" (Borden The
Priest and the Rabbi). The General is so sympathetic that he gives his pay to these men because he thought they deserve more than a medal. This
thought of honor is also reflected in The Backwash of war. Grammont, being a member of the Battalion de'Afrique was not supposed to receive
medals. However he was so courageous and never complained all while on his death bed, the General was left no choice but to award him anyway.
Grammont fought to stay alive long enough to receive such accommodation because it was so meaningful but was unable. "So he died finally, after a

The Psychological War Zone:
An Analysis of The Wars
"A man should not strive to eliminate his complexes but to get into accord with them: they are legitimately what directs his conduct in the world." –
Sigmund Freud
Skin and bones, blood and water – all humans are created and bound by the same organic materials that yield the same image at a microscopic level.
However, the complexities and differences possessed by each individual – the origins of human ingenuity, imagination, and innovation lie in the
function of a three pound mass of meat known as the human brain. The human brain separates one idea from another, it provides a radically changing
perception about what it knows to be true, and above all it shapes the core of an individual's behaviour through the continuous battle between one's id

also the dynamics of how war drastically ignites suppressed behaviours in those who experiences it. Findley has effectively demonstrated a continuous

War Zone Triage Essay
War zone triage and emergency triage has become more efficient over the years. There are a lot of things that are off limits for triage including,
compromise in privacy and confidentiality, failure to provide necessary care for all patients, discrimination over race and ethnicity. Triage is the process
of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their conditions.Triage may result in determining the order and priority of
emergency treatment, the order and priority of emergency transport, or the transport destination for the patient.
Triage may also be used for patients arriving at the emergency department, or telephoning medical advice systems, among others. In recent years, it has

of time without significant increase in the likelihood of death or disability.
4. Expectant. Those whose injuries are so extensive that there is little or no hope of survival, given the available medical resources.
As military triage has evolved during the twentieth century, the goal of maintaining fighting strength has increasingly become the dominant, stated

were the slimmest. Over time, triage systems have evolved into a very well–defined medical process. Specific medical training is required for the
utilization of the multiple types of triage systems available.
Triage can be performed in a number of locations and circumstances. Triage may be performed on the scene, as would be the case in a situation with a

Two great changes that came that resulted from the second world war were border changes and the economies of many countries. After the world
war, Germany and the countries that were allied with germany lost a lot of land. They suffered a lot of loss and their economy was down. This let the
allies get a lot of the land that once belonged to other countries. The World War also caused many other countries on the winning side to get a better
economy. They emerged more powerful than they were before the war.Germany and nations fighting alongside it were disgraced.

Indeed, the ACC had no executive authority of its own, but rather had to rely on the cooperation of each military governor to implement its decisions in
his occupation zone. Given the immense problems involved in establishing a provisional administration, unanimity was often lacking, and occupation
policies soon varied. The French, for instance, vetoed the establishment of a central German administration, a decision that furthered the country's
eventual division. Because they had not participated in the Potsdam conference, the French did not feel bound to the conference decision that the
country would remain an economic unit. Instead, the French sough to extract as much as they could from Germany and from the Saar area for a time.
The Soviet occupiers likewise sought to recover as much as possible from Germany, as compensation for the losses their country had sustained during

Rod Serling And The Twilight Zone : The Twilight Zone
The Twilight Zone was one of the most influential tv shows of all time. The twilight zone was so influential on the American family because of the
screenwriter Rod Serling(Rod Serling 1). Rod Serling used his scripts to talk about issues going on. He also used his scripts to mess with the mind of
the reader(Pendergast 764). The Twilight Zonehad a huge impact on the American society because of the topics they would cover in their episodes.
Rod Serling created the Twilight Zone by using wit(Garron 11). He was the director for over 100 tv shows(Rod Serling 1). Serling was born on
"December 25, 1924 in Syracuse, New York(Rod Serling 1). He boxed for the military and he won 17 out of 18 fights(Rod Serling 1). During World
War two he was stationed in the Philippines and he was shot and severely wounded( Rod Serling 2). The Twilight Zone became popular because of
the scripts Serling would create(Hand 40). Serling had to overcome many obstacles to make his shows a success and become famous(Rod Serling 3).
Serling became so poor that at one point he couldn't support his family so he had to take a job at a factory(Rod Serling 3). An episode of The Twilight
Zone would be about someone trying to solve an issue or problem going on(Pendergast 764). Serling scripts were getting rejected so he had to take a

Analysis Of Steven Galloway's The Cellist Of Sarajevo
"Knowing no one is coming, but not wanting to believe it": How war affects the self concept of those living in the battlefield in The Cellist of Sarajevo
Steven Galloway's novel The Cellist of Sarajevo follows Sarajevo citizens who are struggling to survive in their home during the genocide which
occurred there in the 1990's. These people become psychologically affected through living on a battleground, and in a life altering way. The very
image of war is enough for most to feel disappointed in mankind, but watching your home crumble around you while being able to see the faces of
those causing the destruction would likely make one lose any remaining faith in humanity. This is demonstrated in The Cellist by the agency of the

Just then it starts raining and everything gets washed away: not even a trace of the young guy is left, nor a trace of the canister. Just water. As if
nothing on the street changed, except everyone got just a bit quieter(11).
This is almost the exact scene from The Cellist(Galloway 159–163) in which afterward Kenan is quiet, as are the people in the poem, but he also is in
such shock from the tragedy that he "pays no attention to the water that spills"(165) and is careless, likely beginning to show this change in personality
after the gore he has witnesses. This later translates into him feeling "detached [and] unconcerned about others"(Reactions after trauma), seen when he
decides to leave Mrs. Ristovski's water behind in the war zone. Kenan has full intent of going back over the bridge a second time to retrieve her
water, but spur of the moment "He turns away, and picks up the rope binding his own bottles"(Galloway 171). The caring and helpful nature observed
earlier shies away after living the crimes being committed against his people, which can be viewed as an effect of the bombing, as before that had
happened or set in he had full intentions to bring water back for his neighbour. Kenan is of the unlucky who must venture out of their houses and face

How Did Ww2 Change The Whole World
Sometimes small or big things could change our minds, thoughts or even our lifestyle. Sometimes a huge thing could change the whole world.
Likewise the changes could be by a person, invention or an event. The World War II is a huge event that changed the whole world. World War II
caused a political, social and economy changes.
The Second World War caused a lot of political changes. After the war, inGermany, there was a lot of poverty and weakness. They lost all of their
energy at the war. So, United States, France, Britain and Soviet Union occupied Germany and divided it into two zones. The east zone was for Soviet

it was like searching for your friend that had died. In the novel If I Die in a Combat Zone. "He had been in command for only an hour when he

The Cold War During World War II
When World War II ended, the last thing the countries imagined was another worldwide conflict. But that's exactly was soon ensued when the Cold
War erupted between the Eastern powers and the Western powers. The Eastern powers consisted of the Soviet Union and the Western powers consisted
of America, Britain and France. During World War II, these allies had a common ground to work together in effort to fight against Hitler and the Nazi
Party. The Cold War wasn't an actual war where battles were fought; it was a time of political controversy and tension between these countries that
were once allies. The thoughts of the Cold War in the Western countries for a while was that it was mainly all "aggressive Soviet attempts at worldwide

Also, the Western powers intervened against the communist powers during the Civil War of Russia in 1918–1920. These two circumstances set the
root for tension. Then origins of the actual Cold War instigated. "Stalin had sought a post WW2 reorganization of Europe to shield his country from
the repetition of German invasions" while "Britain and American statesmen envisioned post war Europe where nations like Italy, Greece and others
would fall within a sphere of influence controlled by Western Powers" (Discovering 255). But Germany was the main origin being that it was in the
center of Europe, it was what each power wanted control over. In October 1943, the European Advisory Commission (EAC) was created between
America, Britain and Soviet officials to work out what Germany's post– World War II treatment would consist of. This was what resulted in the division
of the country into zones of occupation down the line of the Elbe River. The Soviets zone was east of the line and Britain, America's and eventually
France's zones were on the western side. The problem with this, though, was that the country's capital of Berlin was located in the Soviets eastern zone
of occupation, which gave the Soviets an advantage over the Western powers so there was agreement to divide the capital into eastern and western
zones as

research I am doing is a Medical Investigation about the many veterans who have been affected by the war and is still being affected with traumas
or other psychiatric illnesses. The article talks about how veterans from the Vietnam war has much more anxiety or affects than the more recent wars
such as in Afghanistan or Iraq. It says hundreds of thousands of veterans are still affected by the Vietnam War even though it's been 40 years since it
had ended. This study was ordered by Congress to understand how war vets are affected throughout their lives. It states that between 70 and 75
percent of vets are not affected from war. The affects that vets can have from war are PTSD, depression, alcoholism, and drug addiction. The overall

Conflict Between The West And The Soviet Union
On May 8th, 1945, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel surrendered the German armed forces to the allies in Berlin, thus ending the war for Germany. The
German people were then confronted by a situation never before experienced. All of Germany was occupied by foreign armies, their cities and
infrastructure lay in ruins, and millions were homeless and starving. Following the unilateral surrender by Germany, the country was divided into four
zones, governed by each of the allied powers: Britain, France, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. As diplomacy between the West and the Soviet Union
began to deteriorate, each zone became more self–sufficient and independent of the others. Tensions between the West and the Soviet Union also
began to rise as it became apparent that the two super powers, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. would vie for dominance throughout the world, each
seeking to spread its ideology and stop the spread of the other's. The first real exacerbation of this conflict came when the Soviet Union blockaded
the divided city of Berlin, which lay in is zone of control. The U.S.S.R. wanted to test the Western resolve to hold Berlin and maintain control. The
response the U.S. chose was to keep Berlin supplied by air, through constant resupply by aircraft, a feat never before accomplished. The airlift lasted
for nearly eleven months and kept the Western controlled sectors of Berlin adequately supplied, and showed the Soviet Union the U.S.'s resolve to hold

The east zone was for Soviet
and west zone was for America, France and British. Germans were homeless and they didn't find a food to eat that simply. Also, Germany paid
reparations to the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. US policy in post–war Germany from 1945 until 1947 had been that no help should
be given to the Germans in rebuilding their country. German heavy industry output to about 50% of its 1938 level. "The dismantling of West German

The United States Became A War Zone
On September 11, 2001, the United states became a war zone. A chain of airline hijacking and suicide attacks, planned by the Islamic terrorist group
al–Qaeda, soon became the most fatal terrorist attack on an American territory in U.S history. Over 2,800 innocent human lives were ended by
detestable acts of terror. The events occurring that day affected every American, as millions watched the events disentangle in New York City,
leaving the world in a state of panic. The morning of September 11, 2001 started off like any other Tuesday morning. The weather was flawless,
clear blue skies, not a cloud in sight. I awoke to the sound of loud car horns going off in the streets below, and the banter of the old men talking
about last night 's Yankees game. Leaning back into my large, warm bed, eyes still heavy from staying up late the night before, I turned over to
look at my alarm and panicked. I forgot to set it last night. I frantically jumped out of bed and was hit by the cool rush of air against my bare body,
and the cold bathroom tile beneath my feet. I quickly fixed my long brown hair, and managed to put some makeup on my face. Running to my closet,
I desperately searched through the racks of clothes hanging up for proper work attire. I managed to successfully walk out the door with both of my
shoes on, hair brushed, and my clothes right side in within 10 minutes. Rushing down the stairs of my small urban apartment, I was met with regular
old men gossiping about what they

War Photographer Poem Analysis
War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is about a photographer who is struggling with the consequences and reality of war. The voice of criticism
from the experience of war combined with the use of poetic devices exposes the theme of war. The poet uses compelling and distressing illustrations in
this poem to enthrall pathos into the reader's feelings. The use of pathos stirs up emotions of sympathy, sorrow, and despair. Thus, his photographic
films are filled with pictures of the genuine agony caused by the bloodshed of warfare. The rhyme scheme is laid out in four regular six–line stanzas,
with each stanza ending with a rhyming couplet. It sets the tone to create a wonderful contrast between the positive and negative prospects of war. As

Through the diverse methods of using powerful images, contrasts, references to the locations of infamous war zones, metaphors, sentence structure, and
formatting styles, the readers are able to see the egregious poem freely. As Carol Ann Duffy discloses the poem, the photographs contain countless
images of hardship and suffering endured by those affected by the war.
The war photographer is described as "a priest" who is ready to intone a mass. The use of euphemism of the photographer gives the readers a
convincing mind of the thoughts and feelings of the photographer. The word 'priest' suggests that the photographer gets a keen sense of responsibility
and obligation. In this instance, he acts like a messenger showing the suffering societies in war zones opening other people's eyes for those who don't
know about the dangers where war is present. "He has a job to do." This short sentence highlights how he is required to keep his concentration and

Epic Of Beowulf Argumentative Essay
You have known about the brilliance of Beowulf the Great, slayer of the foul beast Grendel and of Grendel's reviled mother, who dragged the
ring–supplier to her den, much to her own lament; Beowulf, who slew the monster of the fortune store, the mythical beast who killed our kin for the
loss of yet one gold glass. In spite of the fact that Beowulf's own cutting edge, Naegling, fizzled him in desperate hour, with the assistance of his
brother Wiglaf, he put a conclusion to the reviled worm, however he lost his life in the fight.
Presently you should know about the childhood of Beowulf and how he picked up the quality of thirty men in his grasp, the quality he used to tear the
arm from the killing Grendel, the descendent of Cain, the main murder. King Hrethel, understood among the tribes, a honorable pioneer of the Geats,
was as a father to Beowulf, however Beowulf was not the child of his loins. You know from the story of Beowulf the man that he conveyed the
pennant of war into fight interestingly at seven years old.
The person who conveys the pennant serves to rally the warriors at vital circumstances. He should hold it up high and never discharge his grasp upon
it. This the youthful Beowulf did as no developed man had ever done. He planted his feet in the earth like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mustard Gas Masks In World War One
World War One introduced new technology and weapons which made fighting war very different and injured and killed millions of people. A very
important weapon that was introduced was mustard gas and other poison gasses. Mustard gas was a very dangerous poison gas that killed and
wounded millions of people. Armies would drop bombs on opposing armies emit mustard gas into the opposing trenches or towns. Mustard gas was
first used effectively in WorldWar One by Germany against the British near Ypres, Belgium in 1917. The Allied Powers did not succeed in using
mustard gas until late 1917 when France had captured some of Germany's mustard gas bombs, they bombed germany at Cambrai, in November.

U–Boats were German submarines, the German word for U–Boat was U–Boot which was a shorter way of saying Unterseeboot, which literally meant
undersea boat. U–Boats had self propelled torpedoes and they ran on diesel engines. In the beginning of World War One Germany had twenty–nine
U–Boats. In the first ten weeks Germany took down five British ships with U–Boats. U–Boats were on and off during the beginning of the war, and
virtually everyone in France and England distrusted the U–Boats and the Germans. In the beginning of the war when the Allied Powers were first
realizing U–Boats they had Germany agree to war zone and commerce zone. Germany was not supposed to shoot at ships in the commerce zone but
anywhere in the war zone was free game. This worked until Germany sunk the American Lusitania and later the S.S. Sussex which prompted America
to get involved and made England force the U.S. into an embargo on Germany. After Germany got embargoed they declared that they were not going to
pay attention to zones anymore and that they were going to let their U–Boats shoot down whatever ships that they wanted to, this worked for them for
a little while though it did end failing for them in the long run. At the end of the war the Germans were forced to surrender all of their U–Boats which

The Causes and Consequences of the Berlin Crisis 1948
After the collapse of Germany in 1945, the Allied Powers of Russia, France, Britain and the United States divided the city of Berlin among
themselves. However, relations began to go sour and the British, French and American zones merged in 1947. A series of events after that led to the
Blockade of Berlin and the Berlin Airlift.
The Berlin Blockade represented the first heightening of Cold War tensions. There was a series of key events that led to the Soviet blockade of Berlin,
the first of which concerned reparations. Russia wanted Germany to pay for the killing of 20 million Russians and widespread destruction it had
caused to the USSR ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the end of World War II, starvation and economic crisis threatened to overtake many European nations. In a rare move, the Allied victors took it
upon themselves to prevent an economic crisis by helping to rebuild the most devastated areas as quickly as possible. However, the American
government also thought that a strong German economy was vital for the growth of a non–communist Western Europe. The Western Allies believed
that the Soviet Union was scheming to set up a central German government that would be Communist–controlled.
Thirdly, in order to address the issue of post–war European recovery and reconstruction, the U.S., Great Britain and France held a series of discussions
in London from February through June of 1948 known collectively as the London Conferences. The result of these discussions was the London
Program, the main goal of which was to establish a West German government through a combination of the three western occupation zones and
currency reform. Therefore British and American zones were joined, followed by the French zone in June 1948 to form one Western zone and a single
economic unit. Stalin watched these events with mistrust. In mid–June, the West issued a new currency in their merged zones (although they did not
extend it to their zones in Berlin), and the Soviet Union issued a

refugees tried to escape from Nazi occupation during the second world war. Both of these groups have gone through many difficult situations, but
have later become successful. This explains some ways that they have similarities and differences. Both groups of refugees have many likenesses.
One similarity is that they both tried to escape from their homes, to get to a safer place. Another similarity is that they both were trapped in a war
zone. The last similarity is that they both were discriminated, also they were made fun of because of their religious beliefs. These are some similarities

Who Was To Blame For The Cold War Essay
I think that to some extent, the Soviet Union was to blame for the start of the Cold War. The Soviet Union's aggressive actions in Eastern Europe meant
that the Americans had to step in to stop the Soviet Union from taking over Eastern Europe and making the countries into puppet states of theirs. As
stated in the Truman Doctrine, America was supposed to aid all countries under oppression. That is why the Americans tried to stop theSoviet Union
and allow democracy in those countries which the Soviets didn't like at all. That distanced the two countries from each other and made them hate each
other even more.
However, the main reason for the start of the Cold War was the fact that both countries had completely different ideologies and plans for their
countries. The USA was a capitalist country and also a democratic one so people had freedom of speech and choice in elections. There were also
more than one political party competing in the elections. In contrast, The USSR was a communist country and so people didn't have freedom of speech

If countries accepted Marshall Aid, the USA would have control over what that money was spent on. The Soviets didn't want that as they thought the
USA was just trying to westernise countries and turn them away from communism. When Germany and Berlin were separated into 4 zones, the Russian
zone was the only one that was a communist area. The Allies then started to merge their zones together to create Bizonia and then soon afterwards
Trizonia which consisted of the American, British and French zones. This caused separate development between West and East Germany. They both
had different currencies and were both working towards different aims. In the end, that is what drove the two sectors apart and then the two countries

Escape The War Zone Essay
Escape the War Zone The War Zone (Tim Roth, 1999) narrates a story of a fifteen
–year–old teenager named Tom, whose life drastically changes right
after his family moves from London to a small town with no kith nor kin. Tom considers his new home a prison and develops a strong abhorrence to
his father after discovering the latter to have been raping Tom's older sister, Jessie, while Tom's mother prefers not to pay attention to what is
happening around, devoting herself to a newborn child. Unveiling the tragedy within the ordinary English family, The War Zone highlights the
conflict of reasoning and emotion which appears as a response to the problem of incest and rape. The film's exposition sets a depressing mood from
the beginning. The opening tracking shot depicts Tom rushing off the hill along the asphalt road, replaced by a bumpy path which leads to a jail–like
house, indicating metaphorical running towards tribulation. Steadily dull weather without any glimpse of sunlight insinuates the apathetic sentiment
within the family. Remarkably, Tom's house family has settled on the seashore,

desires and ended up raping Tom's newborn sister, the teenager found the courage to confront his father. However, Tom's hatred waded through his
reasoning, so he stabbed his father with a kitchen knife, rushing into the embrace of rage and

this GPA represents. Educators grade our assignments on how much we "understand" and then average them. This average is translated to another
number, bonus points if the class preludes with AP or ends with "H". The GPA coupled with the ACT or SAT, standardized tests that students take to

changed dramatically by having the landmass grow, through discovery, by at least doubling what it was before. The European discovery of North
America, the Mississippian shatter zone, Louisiana Purchase, and the Mexican–American war are all historical events that changed the path and future
of America dramatically, through the making of controversial decisions. The expansion started with humans on the move, and hunters tracking food

This zone was created by the shared circumstances of the uncertainty of the Mississippian world and the inability of Native communities to accept the
full force of colonialism. The induction of a hopeful economic system by European buyers; the growth and spread of violence and warfare through the
Indian slave trade; and through the rise of military Native slaving unions who held control of the European trade (Ethridge and Shuck p.2). These
conditions caused instability in the Mississippi shatter zone. Contact with Europeans did not leave the Natives completely and utterly destroyed. The
Mississippian world may have collapsed as a community, but the reformation that followed, people rebuilt their communities and created new social
and political parties. These new parties maintained organizations and practices such as town committees, trade, social organizations, corn agriculture,
and hunting and gathering. All of which had their origins during the Mississippian Period and possibly even in earlier eras. These organizations and
practices proved to be vastly adaptable and could be integrated into the new universal economic situations. In 1803, the United States bought over
800,000 square miles of land from France for 15 million dollars, known as the Louisiana Purchase. The territory included today's states of Arkansas,

victims of the vicious cycle of war and terror today are children. The failure to provide essential needs such as clean food and water, shelter, sanitation,

Vietnam War
"You never knew who was the enemy and who was the friends," said a marine officer who took part in a conflict deemed the longest war in Unites
States history (My). The Vietnam War was not only the longest war in US history, as it took place from 1959 to 1975, but it is also considered one of
the most controversial conflicts to date. This war, also known as the second Indochina War, occurred in the countries of Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
It was fought between communist North Vietnam, supported by its allies, and South Vietnam, backed by theUnited States and the other members of the
Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, who wanted to contain the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. Although the struggle originally was between

Unfortunately, "Agent Orange," the chemical used in the defoliation process, not only destroyed the coverage of the Vietcong, but also adversely
impacted the ordinary people who ingested these harmful toxins (Vietnam Spartacus). However, this seemingly cruel behavior was a reasonable act on
behalf of the US troops, because this was the deceptive nature of guerilla warfare that the Vietcong insisted on using. Another reason why the US
treatment of Vietnamese citizens was justified in the context of the war was because many of America's actions towards the civilians were merely a
means of enforcing the policy of containment, in order to benefit the citizens of Vietnam. One of the main reasons that the Unites States even got
involved in the Vietnam War was to prevent a communist takeover of Vietnam and all of Southeast Asia for that matter. This theory, known as the
domino theory, presented the idea that if Vietnam fell to communism, it would be more likely that other nations around it would join the "communist
bloc," which would soon spread throughout the world (Wars). The main attempt to stop this communist insurgency was to isolate the civilians from
contact with the NLF. In order to do so, the US advisors to the Diem regime implemented the Strategic Hamlet Program, as well as the

Symbolism In The Cellist Of Sarajevo

  • 1. Symbolism In The Cellist Of Sarajevo Ossie Davis once said, "Any form of art is a form of power; it has an impact, it can affect change, it can not only move us, it makes us move". Similarly, The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway tells the story of how three individuals Arrow, Dragan and Kenan suffering from the unrelenting and ruthlessness of war are impacted by one musician's art. All three characters suffer from the war in different ways, but the art in the form of music finds a way to connect them all. Galloway's novel illustrates that art helps lessen the suffering of those facing the brutality of war as the cellist's music provides healing of the spirit, mind, and body. The cellist's music provides hope and inspiration to the people of Sarajevo that they will be able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Arrow's supervisor Nermin takes her to listen to the cellist as her latest assignment will be to protect him. Listening to the cellist's music elicits a powerful response, "She leans back into the wall. She's no longer there. Her mother is lifting her up, spinning her around and laughing" (75). The cellist's music allows her to be taken away from her daily battle with the men on the hills to a time when she didn't have to kill people and live with constant death and destruction. Arrow gets emotional comfort as she is able to remember a moment of her childhood when she was happy and the war had not taken her family away. Arrow's reminiscing about life before the war gives her emotional endurance as she gets a piece of a time of happiness to cling on to during her daily battles. The memory of a time before the war aids in reducing Arrow's suffering as she is taken away from the torture of the battlefield. Additionally, it also helps to heal her mind as she reminded of a time when she was happy and consumed with hatred. Moreover, the cellist's music transports the people of Sarajevo to a future of comfort and happiness. While listening to the cellist play his music, Kenan is transported to a dream sequence, "Kenan will look at his wife, and then his and younger daughter and he will know how happy he is and none of this will ... • 2. The Forever War Analysis War is a terrible, but dark truth of the world we live in today and throughout most of history. After the 9/11 attacks, America declared war and soon after started to deploy soldiers to attack. To cover the war in a new aspect, many reports were sent to war zones to get a story for the people of America. One of these reporters was Dexter Filkins. After his horrendous time in the war zone, Filkins made a book titled "The Forever War". In one of the chapters, it discusses suicide bombings during the war. Filkins, was an inside eye to the war, was not a soldier, but just a citizen trying to get a story for the rest of America. I believe Filkins wrote this chapter to show America about the continuous fear the soldiers and the civilians in the war zone.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Filkins shows the fear when he says, "No one wanted to stand in a crowd anymore. No one wanted to stand in line anymore." (174). This shows how not only some people fear the bombings, but that almost all people are scared, and it's stopping them to do normal daily tasks such as waiting to get food or going to a public area for shopping. Everyday bomb squads are outside checking for possible planted bombs and checking bombing that happened before. For Filkins to tell the story of a whole city in this chapter of the book, is remarkable alone. This adds to the message Filkins is trying to send, by giving examples of what happens, he can make us see almost what they saw and feel what they felt. Filkins writing is very effective in reinforcing his idea and gives it that extra punch to reach out to people to try and make them understand what is going on in the war. There are other ways he shows the people fear too. When Filkins writes, "I'd hear that sometimes. A suicide bomber is driving around the neighborhood, looking for a target; look out." (173). These are only two sentences, but the message in them is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Forced Internment The forced internment of Japanese–Americans by the United States government during World War II served as a symbol of the fears and xenophobia that both American citizens and government officials felt following the declaration of war with the empire of Japan. There was an official reason for internment in the form of national security, but there were also many informal reasons for the action. Either way, the forced internment ofUnited States civilians by the United States government marked a distinct executive overstep of individual rights and dismissal of the constitution. [This paragraph will talk about how white Americans felt about Japanese Americans before Pearl Harbor and briefly after. This paragraph will end with the rise of anti ... (Conrat, 18) As presented, Japanese–Americans, no matter if they participated and contributed to society, were discriminated against in a manner similar to the way that Americans of African, Chinese, and Latino descent were. It was largely believed that anti–Japanese ideology stemmed from earlier, anti–Chinese agitation that began to occur following California's gold rush in the 1850s (Conrat, 16) This lax form of discrimination worsened after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. On the morning of December 7th, 1941, The Empire of Japan launched a surprise offensive against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. They also simultaneously attacked additional U.S. bases in the Philippines and British Imperial bases in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The purpose of these attacks was to cripple the United States' pacific fleet and prevent it from interfering with The Empire of Japan's aggressive actions in south–east Asia. The attacks left 3,500 Americans dead or wounded, 149 planes and two battleships destroyed, and four other battleships heavily damaged. (Wakida, 1) Following these attacks, thePresident of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, went before congress and asked for an immediate declaration of war against Japan. Congress obliged and the United States quickly entered World War ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Carol Ann Duffy War Photographer Essay War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy is about a photographer who is struggling with the consequences and reality of war. The voice of criticism from the experience of war combined with the use of poetic devices exposes the theme of war. The poet uses compelling and distressing illustrations in this poem to enthrall pathos into the reader's feelings. The use of pathos stirs up emotions of pity, sympathy and sorrow. Therefore, his photographic films are filled with images of the genuine agony caused by the bloodshed of war. The rhyme scheme is laid out in four regular six–line stanzas, with each stanza ending in a rhyming couplet. It sets the tone to create a wonderful contrast between the positive and negative prospects of war. As the theme of death is explored, the poet describes the photographer's mind vividly, unraveling both the atrocity of war and the indifference of those who live in comfort. The 1st stanza of the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In stanza one the word choice of "darkroom" represents the thoughts inside of the war photographers mind; the darkness suggests sadness and depression in his thoughts. This idea is continued in stanza two with enjambment, "beneath his hands which did not tremble then/ though seem to now". The enjambment creates the effect that now the war photographer is all alone as his emotions are tumbling out, the word choice of "tremble" also suggests that the now he is alone he can let his emotions be maintained. The poet's use of enjambment is also effective as it creates the impression that his emotions are pouring out. This idea of his career affects him emotionally as he vividly "remembers the cries" of a particular man's wife. This highlights how he was faced in a distressful situation, amongst the wife's sorrowful. This ordeal experience is something he cannot simply forget. Resultantly, he is affected by the survivor's guilt which he can't control ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. What Was The Truman Doctrine Essay Right from the start of the Cold War, after the Second World War (1939 –1945), the European continent was split up once more and two ideologies were considered to dominate most countries. The Truman doctrine, established in 1947 by the President of the United States of America forged the Western bloc and put forward capitalism as a strong political ideology . Following this doctrine was the initiation of the Marshall plan, a financial and military help, which goal was to reduce The Soviet Union's influence on eastern countries. The leading force of the Eastern bloc, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) answered to the United States' doctrine with the Zhdanov doctrine which divided the world between "the imperialists", the United States and "the socialists", the Soviet Union. Communism was the ideology in the U.S.S.R. and its allied countries. Defeated after the end of the Second World War, Germany was split in four occupation zones as it was discussed at the Potsdam Conference (July –August 1945). The three zones belonging to the western countries (French zone, British zone and American zone) were unified and thus opposed to the soviet zone. The worst part is most of these children can never seek help, or they simply do not know that they need it. The boys in the book the Lord of the Flies were not in a war by adults but they created their own war. While on the island, they made their own trauma and forms of PTSD. After analyzing the memoirs of Nurses La Motte and Borden during World War One, the evidence shows some can still have empathy while others lose their faith in humanity altogether. Even though both women went through very similar experiences, La Motte becomes pessimistic while Borden does not. The Backwash of War reveals that La Motte develops opinions like how men only see women as sex objects, medals are worthless and death is necessary, while Borden conveys her compassion in The Forbidden Zone by describing women as beautiful, the awards are worthy of their lives, and that some deserve to die peacefully. In The Forbidden Zone, medals are also portrayed as the highest honor possible. "'The ampute found an envelope on his coverlet with a hundred francs in it. The General, so they said, gave all his pay to the men in this way" (Borden The Priest and the Rabbi). The General is so sympathetic that he gives his pay to these men because he thought they deserve more than a medal. This thought of honor is also reflected in The Backwash of war. Grammont, being a member of the Battalion de'Afrique was not supposed to receive medals. However he was so courageous and never complained all while on his death bed, the General was left no choice but to award him anyway. The Psychological War Zone: An Analysis of The Wars "A man should not strive to eliminate his complexes but to get into accord with them: they are legitimately what directs his conduct in the world." – Sigmund Freud Skin and bones, blood and water – all humans are created and bound by the same organic materials that yield the same image at a microscopic level. However, the complexities and differences possessed by each individual – the origins of human ingenuity, imagination, and innovation lie in the function of a three pound mass of meat known as the human brain. The human brain separates one idea from another, it provides a radically changing perception about what it knows to be true, and above all it shapes the core of an individual's behaviour through the continuous battle between one's id and superego in a Freudian psychoanalytical framework. The German people were confronted with a situation that they had never before experienced: foreign armies occupied the entire German territory. The total breakdown of civil administration throughout the country required immediate measures to ensure the rebuilding of civil authority. Because they had not participated in the Potsdam conference, the French did not feel bound to the conference decision that the country would remain an economic unit. Instead, the French sough to extract as much as they could from Germany and from the Saar area for a time. The Soviet occupiers likewise sought to recover as much as possible from Germany, as compensation for the losses their country had sustained during the war. Unlike the French, however, they sought to influence Germany as a whole and hoped to hold an expanded area of influence. In their own zone, the Soviet authorities quickly move toward establishing a socialist society like their own. Analysis Of Steven Galloway's The Cellist Of Sarajevo "Knowing no one is coming, but not wanting to believe it": How war affects the self concept of those living in the battlefield in The Cellist of Sarajevo Steven Galloway's novel The Cellist of Sarajevo follows Sarajevo citizens who are struggling to survive in their home during the genocide which occurred there in the 1990's. These people become psychologically affected through living on a battleground, and in a life altering way. The very image of war is enough for most to feel disappointed in mankind, but watching your home crumble around you while being able to see the faces of those causing the destruction would likely make one lose any remaining faith in humanity. Just then it starts raining and everything gets washed away: not even a trace of the young guy is left, nor a trace of the canister. Just water. This later translates into him feeling "detached [and] unconcerned about others"(Reactions after trauma), seen when he decides to leave Mrs. Ristovski's water behind in the war zone. Kenan has full intent of going back over the bridge a second time to retrieve her water, but spur of the moment "He turns away, and picks up the rope binding his own bottles"(Galloway 171). The caring and helpful nature observed earlier shies away after living the crimes being committed against his people, which can be viewed as an effect of the bombing, as before that had happened or set in he had full intentions to bring water back for his neighbour. The German people were then confronted by a situation never before experienced. All of Germany was occupied by foreign armies, their cities and infrastructure lay in ruins, and millions were homeless and starving. Following the unilateral surrender by Germany, the country was divided into four zones, governed by each of the allied powers: Britain, France, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. As diplomacy between the West and the Soviet Union began to deteriorate, each zone became more self–sufficient and independent of the others. The first real exacerbation of this conflict came when the Soviet Union blockaded the divided city of Berlin, which lay in is zone of control. The U.S.S.R. wanted to test the Western resolve to hold Berlin and maintain control. The response the U.S. chose was to keep Berlin supplied by air, through constant resupply by aircraft, a feat never before accomplished. The Soviet Union's aggressive actions in Eastern Europe meant that the Americans had to step in to stop the Soviet Union from taking over Eastern Europe and making the countries into puppet states of theirs. Students, once hopeful and brimming with aspirations such as CEO or astronaut, are pitted against each other in this war zone of education. This war zone is not about the importance of garnering knowledge, it is all about class ranking and a GPA. Oh, what a thing this GPA represents. Educators grade our assignments on how much we "understand" and then average them. This average is translated to another number, bonus points if the class preludes with AP or ends with "H". The GPA coupled with the ACT or SAT, standardized tests that students take to measure their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Expansion Of The United States The progress of expansion in the United States is one filled with complicated, complex, and irrational decisions. Geographically, North America changed dramatically by having the landmass grow, through discovery, by at least doubling what it was before. The European discovery of North America, the Mississippian shatter zone, Louisiana Purchase, and the Mexican–American war are all historical events that changed the path and future of America dramatically, through the making of controversial decisions. The expansion started with humans on the move, and hunters tracking food /game across a recently discovered land bridge from Siberia to Alaska, where they discover an ice–free passage leading to the south. They continue and reach the great... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This zone was created by the shared circumstances of the uncertainty of the Mississippian world and the inability of Native communities to accept the full force of colonialism. The induction of a hopeful economic system by European buyers; the growth and spread of violence and warfare through the Indian slave trade; and through the rise of military Native slaving unions who held control of the European trade (Ethridge and Shuck p.2). These conditions caused instability in the Mississippi shatter zone. Contact with Europeans did not leave the Natives completely and utterly destroyed. The Mississippian world may have collapsed as a community, but the reformation that followed, people rebuilt their communities and created new social and political parties. These new parties maintained organizations and practices such as town committees, trade, social organizations, corn agriculture, and hunting and gathering. All of which had their origins during the Mississippian Period and possibly even in earlier eras. These organizations and practices proved to be vastly adaptable and could be integrated into the new universal economic situations. In 1803, the United States bought over 800,000 square miles of land from France for 15 million dollars, known as the Louisiana Purchase. The territory included today's states of Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Trauma Of War War has been a constant throughout human history, and it comes hand in hand with death, destruction, and chaos. Conflicts in regions in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America continue to drag on today and the human cost continues to grow. Of all the victims of conflict, the hardest hit victims of the vicious cycle of war and terror today are children. The failure to provide essential needs such as clean food and water, shelter, sanitation, and healthcare along with several others in times of conflict have led to Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) and those who survive through conflict have to deal with the permanent psychological trauma of witnessing war. Dealing with child malnutrition in conflict zones is not as simple as providing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Vietnam War Position Paper Vietnam War "You never knew who was the enemy and who was the friends," said a marine officer who took part in a conflict deemed the longest war in Unites States history (My). The Vietnam War was not only the longest war in US history, as it took place from 1959 to 1975, but it is also considered one of the most controversial conflicts to date. This war, also known as the second Indochina War, occurred in the countries of Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. It was fought between communist North Vietnam, supported by its allies, and South Vietnam, backed by theUnited States and the other members of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, who wanted to contain the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. Although the struggle originally was between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, "Agent Orange," the chemical used in the defoliation process, not only destroyed the coverage of the Vietcong, but also adversely impacted the ordinary people who ingested these harmful toxins (Vietnam Spartacus). However, this seemingly cruel behavior was a reasonable act on behalf of the US troops, because this was the deceptive nature of guerilla warfare that the Vietcong insisted on using. Another reason why the US treatment of Vietnamese citizens was justified in the context of the war was because many of America's actions towards the civilians were merely a means of enforcing the policy of containment, in order to benefit the citizens of Vietnam. One of the main reasons that the Unites States even got involved in the Vietnam War was to prevent a communist takeover of Vietnam and all of Southeast Asia for that matter. This theory, known as the domino theory, presented the idea that if Vietnam fell to communism, it would be more likely that other nations around it would join the "communist bloc," which would soon spread throughout the world (Wars). The main attempt to stop this communist insurgency was to isolate the civilians from contact with the NLF. In order to do so, the US advisors to the Diem regime implemented the Strategic Hamlet Program, as well as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
