Isolation And Alienation In Australia
Isolation and alienation are two recurring factors that have occurred throughout history and are
ongoing aspects which materialize in contemporary society. These forms of isolation and alienation
are caused and influenced by the power of language, discriminating against individuals and groups
due to their religion, culture, values, beliefs, appearance, gender, etc. The knowledge and
understanding towards particular minority groups have been drastically affected by segregation and
the misleadence of the media and political voices. As society and technology have evolved,
however, the form of segregation has changed and the degree of treatment and isolation towards
minority groups. Although the majority of contemporary society has accepted various minority
groups as equals there are still those few people who degrade and look down upon them based on
the beliefs, cultures, country, values, and the media and political voice influences. Each group whilst
confined and secluded for differing reasons, all are equally affected by the power of language and
the ideal socio–cultures of the time.
Based on political and media influences, individuals and groups are victims of alienation and
isolation, with the degree varying due to the power of language and the era of the occurrence. ...

National Public Land Volunteering
I volunteered at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve on National Public Lands Day. National Public
Lands Day promotes outdoor enjoyment, volunteering, and conservation of public lands. This event
took place on September 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. To do this, I filled out a permission slip
handed out by Ms. Zacks. I arranged a ride from my mom and gathered the needed supplies. Park
rangers assigned volunteers and I specific tasks to complete for the following six hours. A small
group and I were assigned the job of trail trimming, where I made the trail safer and more enjoyable.
Volunteering is key to creating a healthy environment. Having sufficient amounts of undeveloped
natural lands is vital to the survival of our environment, especially

The Stolen Generation Research Paper
The Lost and Stolen
The Stolen Generation. It was, no it is a major part of Australian history. It is horrible and
unthinkable. It was thought to be one of the darkest times in Australian history because the "Whites"
treated the Aboriginals as inferior and that they should follow their rules, even if the British were the
ones who invaded them. From a number of sources the public can see that Aboriginal people had so
many terrible things happen to them. They had their children taken away from them. Their culture
and native customs, even their names and identities were striped from them. Why did this happen?
What was the reason behind this? The answers to these questions are still being searched for. A
powerful and startling example of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason behind the stolen generation was to breed out aboriginality, it was thought that if the
children could be raised in white society then when they were adults they could integrate without
much trouble. What the government didn't know is that the aborigines didn't want to be integrated
into white society, they wanted to keep their culture and ways. In 1994 there was a conference in
Darwin called the Going Home Conference. Over 600 people who were taken as children in every
state and territory of Australia came together to share life lessons and experience and to also talk
about their native culture to keep it alive in their

The Song Took The Children Away By Archie Roach
The stolen generation
Task 1
The song 'Took the Children Away' by Archie Roach is a song about the stolen generation. The
stolen generation is a major event that happened in Australian history. This happened between the
1890s and 1970s as many aboriginal children that were 'half–caste', were forcefully taken away
from their families, to live in girls and boys houses, missions or foster families. At the age of 18
they were then released, still many didn't find any family or relatives. Some children never learned
anything traditional and received little or no education. Instead the boys to be stockmen, girls were
trained to be domestic servants,. This plan was part of a scheme by the government called
assimilation policy the government forced indigenous australians to live the life as a white
Australian, so government workers would come and take the kids from their homes and place them
in to white australians home to live. About 100,000 Aborigine children who were taken from their
families and adopted into white households as part of the government's program of forced
assimilation. On the 26th May 1998, the first National Sorry Day was held. It was one year since the

Narrative Essay About An Elf Queen
The privilege of being young is having infinite possibility to become whatever I want – from
princess to T–Rex – at least in my imagination. In my own fantasy world, I crowned myself as an elf
queen who reigns over the forest nearby my house. Everyone – even our parents, neighbors,
teachers – looked upon their majesty and respected her sovereignty ever since her coronation
ceremony. As a royal guardian and a ruler, her daily routine included looking around her territory,
playing with trees, showing everyone how beautiful she is and inviting other magical creatures to
her castle. Dressed in pink satin dress, holding a star–shaped wand, she marched down her own
runway every day. By the time the elf queen reached the age of eight, she started ... Show more

Kevin Rudd Apology
"To the Stolen Generations I say the following. .. As Prime Minister of Australia I am sorry. On
behalf of the Government of Australia I am sorry. On behalf of the Parliament of Australia, I am
sorry" (Kevin Rudd, Apology, 2008). In 2008, Kevin Rudd stood up and made a speech in regards to
the stolen generation of Aboriginal Australian People. He made an apology on behalf of the
government for the way in which the Aboriginal People were treated. This speech was, and still is, a
very significant event that occurred in Australia's history. Whilst many Aboriginal People are
thankful for the apology on behalf of the white Australians, many still feel mistreated and upset over
the issue (M Silby, 2013).

According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, governments have not undertaken
sufficient steps necessary to overcome the health inequality of Indigenous Australians. Since Kevin
Rudd's speech, there is still approximately a seventeen year gap between Indigenous and non–
Indigenous Australian life expectancy. Indigenous people have a greater burden of life threatening
diseases, due to inaccessible and unaffordable treatments. Indigenous children also have higher rates
of hearing loss, as a result of untreated diseases (T Calma, n.d.). The speech, was an attempt to
spread awareness of these issues and to possibly overcome them. However, these statistics
demonstrate how little action has been accomplished by the Australian Government, to provide
equal rights and freedoms for the Indigenous Australians (L Behrendt,

Personal Narrative: Nanowrimo
When I was thirteen, I finished National Novel Writing Month for the first time. High on caffeine
and enthusiasm, I crossed the 50,000 word threshold on day twenty–three. Even though I've won
NaNoWriMo every year since, that was still the proudest moment of my life, not because I wrote
The Great American Novel (ha ha, not even close) but because I proved that it's possible to sit down
and accomplish something huge, even when you had no road map and no idea what you're doing.
Mind you, that doesn't mean that it's easy. On the contrary, NaNoWriMo might be one of the hardest
things I've ever done. You're writing a 200 page novel in a month. I don't care if you're Stephen
King; if you think that's easy, you're crazy. But even when I'm lying on

Reflection Of Storycorp Interview
Introduction
This paper will discuss the recent events that have happened in this past week. The results of the
personality and values test. How the StoryCorp interview got me closer to my mother. What I
learned about the photographic work field in my informational interview. The online programs I
plan to use for my 21–day APP project. How I hope this class will help my growth as a person.
Summary of Key Findings from Interest, Skills, Values and Personality Surveys I generally try to be
kind to others and I greatly enjoy making people laugh. I would like to incorporate humor into my
Capstone Project and show the beauty of nature. I want my pictures to make people happy whether
it is by laughing or admiring nature. I believe this project will go well with my personality.
StoryCorps Interview Reflection Karen, my mother, and I talked about family and religion. My
mother is a family based woman, she has become more religious in her age. I asked her what her
favorite memories of me were and she brought up events so far in the past I had forgotten them. It
was nice to reminisce about events long past and talk about Heaven. We do not normally talk about
Heaven so it was nice to hear her thoughts about it.
Informational Interview Results The Capstone Project I have chosen does not need a higher
education to pursue after. Mr. Dunahee explained that the degree he went in for was not for
photography. He had ended up in this work field after a friend paid him to do his wedding shots. Mr.
Dunahee told me this after we had finished our interview, I was unsure whether to add it in or not.
Photography is a constantly adapting in order to keep up with all the new technology made
available. Why pay for a photographer when your phone can handle the job? While I greatly admire
the field I do not think it would be a suitable career choice for me. After the interview, Mr. Dunahee
encouraged me to join his class to learn more about photography face to face. While the offer is
tempting, I fear I do not have time to join his class due to my demanding work schedule.
21–Day APP Project Since my work schedule is very hectic I have chosen to take online class to
learn more about photography. I did have a hard time narrowing

Racial profiling is when law officer use race, ethnicity and national origin as ground targeting
someone that they committed an offense. Racial profiling can be term as discrimination on the basis
of if someone did something bad from their community, the whole community have to face the same
problem because the other people from other communities think the whole community is same they

Indigenous Speeches: Exploration of the Mabo Case, Stolen...
Exploration of the Mabo Case, Stolen Generation and Reconciliation Both Keating's and Rudd's
speeches are firmly based on the ideas of recognition and reconciliation for the wrongs that
European settlers, and their decedents, have inflicted on Indigenous Australians. To explore this idea
I believe that it is necessary to take a closer look at both the plight of Eddie Mabo and the stories of
the Stolen Generation. The Mabo Case Eddie Mabo is widely known for his plight to regain land
rights for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 1982, along with four other Meriam
people from Murray Island, he initiated legal proceedings in the Queensland Supreme Court

5). Few managed to find themselves being adopted into loving and nurturing white families, but
these children still suffered great losses such as loss of language and connection to country. The act
of child removal was not only damaging to the children but also to their families, communities and
country. Families, in particular mothers, were put through immense grief when their children were
taken away for 'a better life'. I believe the best was to illustrate this is to engage with the stories of
those who experienced the trauma. When Margaret Tucker and one of her sisters were removed,
their mother completely broke down. Margaret's recollection puts into perspective just how much
grief was left behind. She wandered off the road to rest in the long grass under a tree. That is where
old Uncle and Aunt found her next day. They found our mother still moaning and crying. They
heard the sound and thought it was an animal in pain. Uncle stopped the horse and got out of the
buggy to investigate. Auntie heard him talking the language. She got down and rushed to old
Uncle's side. Mother was half–demented and ill. They gave her water and tried to feed her, but she
couldn't eat. She was not interested in anything for weeks, and wouldn't let Genevieve out of her
sight. She slowly got better, but I believe for months after, at the sight of a policeman's white helmet
coming round the bend of the river, she would find her little girl and escape into the bush, as did all

Stolen Generations
Between 1910–1970, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their family and community
as the result of the Government's belief in the black inferiority and white superiority. The children
affected by the government issued child removal policies were known as the Stolen Generation.
These children were raised rejecting their own heritage and forbidden to speak their traditional
language while under the care of their adoptive white family or institutions. The forcible removal of
these children impacted not only the indigenous people but also the culture itself. Many of the
Stolen Generations suffered physical, mental and sexual abuse and received very low level of
education; while the culture itself is disrupted and lost.
The report of the National inquiry into the segregation of aboriginal and Torres strait islander
children from their family, entitled 'Bringing Them Home', was proposed in parliament on the 26 of
May 1997; the day prior to the the opening of the National Reconciliation Convention. The report

negative one. I think when you are choosing to be alone, it is being you either want or need to, so it
becomes a positive activity. On the other hand, if you are being left out, it can be a negative one. I
used to get left out a lot with my "friends," I mean I still do. But I have learned to accept the fact
that you will not always be included in everything, and that is okay. My friends used to hang out

being on my phone 24/7. I feel as there is a strong correlation between phone use and living

mind set. After having the mindset of doing everything with a purpose, I have realized I like this
way of living and will continue, and try my hardest, to have this mindset over summer. I want to

Personification In Sorry Song
Reconciliation is an act of restoration, to unite, unify and up bring a stronger and more functional
relationship between the Australian and Aboriginal community. To achieve complete reconciliation
attempts from films, poetry, novels and other limitless elements, have been constructed to reflect the
attitudes and values of the context in which are designed to accomplish this virtuous goal. Evidently,
they demonstrate to be positively effective, through the countless response of the wider community.
A powerful illustration that embodies a similar attitude, value and belief is Kerry Fletcher's, Sorry
Song. Written during the early years of indigenous rights, comes arguably one of the most iconic
messages, of the Stolen Generation. Through purposefully using repetition and personification in
each verse, Fletcher is without doubt singing in determination to expose the ugly history; federal
governments effortlessly try to keep buried. Moreover, these techniques become equally more
magnificent, when its context is directed and communicated through a non–aboriginal woman,
despite the political arrogance at the time. However, In the light of what today symbolises, let us
explore the hidden meaning behind Fletchers motivation, which helped mole the true significance of
NAIDOC Day. Through the significant use of repetition, the Sorry Song is able to effectively
communicate Fletcher's message, in a much more engaging and notable manner. This, evidently,
implants in us the spirit of reconciliation, as the text expresses its views of the painful remembrance
towards The Stolen Generation. However, the true beauty of using repetition is its ability to
manipulate simple sentences, into a more memorable phrase. In the Sorry Song, it is consumed with
repetition, because Fletcher knew, the power it contained, was essential to achieve complete
resolution through the repeating of simple verses. In other words, Repetition helps bring
remembrance and as a result creates reconciliation. Thus, without this technique, the meaning will
lose its effect, destroying the purpose of what this iconic song symbolizes. A great illustration of
repetition is Fletcher's unique skill of repeating words that are utilized in any given situation. For

many situations. No matter how effective your communication skills, how sensitive you may be, or
how compatible or in love you might be with your spouse, sooner or later you are bound to do
something that will either hurt or embarrass your partner. How then do you know when you have
wronged your partner and to sincerely apologize? An apology need only be made for something that
in retrospect the giver sincerely intends not to repeat. It means taking responsibility for something
that you genuinely feel remorse over and intend not to repeat. A sincere apology has the power to
heal a world of hurts. It is a magic wand that can melt the hurt and restore your relationship. Saying
"I am sorry" and meaning it is a miraculous healing tool. Nobody is perfect and we are all bound to

Indigenous Australian And Torres Strait Islands
MODERN HISTORY
Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Island cultures have the oldest living history in the world.
They trace back at least 50,000 years and some argue closer to 65,000 years. Events, policies and
attitudes of the past have impacted this rich and diverse culture. Through progressive movements
and other agencies of social, cultural and political change, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
have been inspired by hope for change to respond to challenges in ways that promote wellbeing,
with varying degrees of success.
An historical inquiry into hope, using Indigenous Australia as a case study is the required task. Key
events, the actions of individuals and groups, and beliefs and values will provide evidence on
patterns of change and continuity over time. The 2008 Australian government apology recognised
the treatment of the Stolen Generation. Hope through the deliverance of the apology was motivated
through achieving reconciliation in Australia and to apologise to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Island people.
The act of saying sorry, if it is genuinely meant, has the ability to reset the balance between races.
The National Apology of 2008 became a significant event that raised public awareness of Aboriginal
people's civil rights in Australia and the foundation of reconciliation in Australia.

This public apology was the stepping stone in attempts speed up reconciliation attempts. This was

Rudd's speech. Hundreds of Web sites, books and movies and a national sorry day have been made

Moreover, victims of The Stolen Generation where interviewed and posted in various different

Personal Experience: My Father Went to Jail in My Dream
My father and I used to play a game together. Every morning, when I was 3, as the sun would rise,
he would come into my room and knock on the side table of my bed. I would always pretend to be
asleep until he knocked, and then I would jump into my father's arms. We called our little game
"Knock, knock" and played it every single day. However, one day, the knocks stopped coming. My
father was no–where. I was fatherless.
I constantly asked my mother where my father had gone. I wanted to resume our daily game of
"Knock, knock". She would not say a word to any of my questions. Yet, one day, a small tear rolling
from her eyes answered them all. Eventually, she got a telephone call explaining where my father
was. The news was bittersweet. My mother wouldn't tell me anything, except that we were going on
a short drive. We hopped into the car, neither of us knowing how the day would turn out. The drive
seemed to last years, aging each one of us to a new level of maturity in preparation for the meeting
with my father. We finally stopped at the Georgia County Jail. I looked at my mother in shock,
unable to believe that this was where my father was. A small nod and the look of her eyes told me
she felt the same confusion I did. She pulled me inside, where I saw lots of brown faces. I scanned
each of them quickly, desperately looking for my father. I saw him and beamed with joy! My father
was merely 10 feet away from me. I ran up to him, trying to play our old game of "Knock, knock",

The Importance Of Australian Day In Australia
If young Anglo Saxon Australians don't understand the 'national' sentiment of the day, why do we
continue with celebrations like Australia Day? One would have thought that a 'multicultural' society
like Australia would have grown out of nationalism, and instead embraced a more, contemporary
cosmopolitan identity. Surely in a globalised, interconnected world, we're all "citizens of the
world"? (Scanlon, the Conversation 2017) Seemingly this is the case for Australia, ideas of the
'nation' have changed over time, into what one could call a cosmopolitan national identity.
Therefore, the sentiment white, Anglo Saxons tie to Australia day, like Senator Brandis (ABC, 2017)
who argued that Australia Day was the point in time which the "modern Australia we now
recognise, had its beginning," is indeed, imagined. Contrary to what Anderson proposes, in the case
of Australia, it can be said that the primary day of celebration is racist toward Indigenous people.
Hence the campaign to Change the Date, reveals the inextricable links between the two terms. The
26th of January belongs mostly to an Australian that was happy to define itself as being for the
white man. To reiterate, Australia Day is not just offensive to the Indigenous population, but it is a
day, of all days that the Indigenous population don't feel 'Australian' (Bond, The Conversation,
2015). Dan Sultan (ABC, 2017) agreed while it was a good idea to have a national day of
celebration, the current day should be see as one

Holocaust And The Lost Generation Essay
"The world is divided into armed camps ready to commit genocide just because we can't agree on
whose fairy tales to believe. In the end, Religion will kill us all," Ed Krebs. The Holocaust and the
Lost Generations were both tragic time periods in the history of the world, however, these events
differ in the goals of the perpetrators, in their impact on how the would would make sure it stopped,
and in what happened during the genocide. The Holocaust was a very appalling event which took
place in Germany. Adolf Hitler and his Nazi killed about 12,000,000 people in which 6,000,000
were of the Jewish religion. Hitler's goal in the Holocaust was to dominate the world with people

coordinator, Leslie Burkhardt, will coordinate the event. The reason why this project is important is
that it gives me a chance to work with land that I have access to, but have not done any work to
deserve access. First, I need to take to complete this project, is to get all of the waiver and sign up
forms and complete them by the twenty–sixth of September. My next step is to find a ride to the
event. I must finish this step by the twenty–sixth, to make sure that I have a way there and do not
panic if it becomes too late. Third, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If asked whether or not I care about it, I will say that I do. However, I do not care about the
environment as much as I probably need to. During the project, if I really care, I will put all I have
into helping. If I do not care as much as I say I do, I will be bored within the first half of the event.
In continuation with my idea about better quality structures at the preserve helping educate people,
these educated people can improve my health. What this means is, if people decide to help the
environment, which is more likely with better structures, then their efforts can indirectly affect me.
For example, if someone decides to become more environment friendly, they may reduce pollution
and make the air more for breathing. Additionally, the physical labor involved with the service
project will make me stronger. Lifting heavy wooden bars, for example, is similar to lifting weights.
At the Big Morongo Valley Preserve, I will likely face problems, such as not being able to lift a
heavy object or not being able to figure out how to use a tool. Both of these problems are very
possible, as I have come across both in a similar project. If I run into problems such as these, I may
get help from another volunteer. In one of these situations, that volunteer might help lift an object or
explain how to use one of the tools. Another solution to this is, someone running the event may give
me a new job. There

Women, Men And Politeness Analysis
In her book Women, Men, and Politeness (2013), Holmes analyzes the differences in politeness
between men and women when it comes to each gender's use of language. According to Holmes
(2013), apologies are perceived as negative politeness devices used in order to restore social
relations after an act of wrongdoing. This applies to the genderlect theory because of the difference
in styles of men and women's language. The theory suggests that women presume a relational
approach in which they seek to interact with others while men use more of an instrumental approach
to get things done. In an effort to talk to get things done, men tend to use more formal politeness
strategies as illustrated in the following example in Women, Men, and Politeness: (11) Ken has
taken a colleague out for lunch. I must apologise for the lousy service here. They're not usually this
bad. But the food's pretty good you see. (p. 162) Women, by contrast, use strategies that focus more
on re–establishing social harmony. (14) Elizabeth interrupted her friend. Sorry I didn't mean to
interrupt you. (p. 163) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to apply Holmes' analyses to the Pantene ad, the different acts of women apologizing in the
video can be examined. Women desire a sense of community and thus want to maintain
relationships. In the last scenario, a man and woman are talking and the woman interrupts him in the
middle of a sentence so she instantly apologizes. Similar to Holmes' example, the ad depicts this
situation to show how instantaneously women recognize and fix their offence for something that
occurs in everyday situations. This correlates with the idea that women interact with others in order
to avoid conflict as much as possible. Therefore, Tannen's genderlect theory is supported in the

Indigenous Speeches Research Essay
Speeches are an iconic and widely used means of expression for our political leaders, particularly
when discussing issues of importance such as Indigenous Australia. Paul Keating's 'Redfern Speech'
and Kevin Rudd's 'Apology to Australia's Indigenous Peoples' are the two political speeches which I
will be analysing in this paper.
The structure of this paper will follow the Cultural Competency Framework as a means for
exploring the above stated speeches. This framework moves through knowledge; informed
practice/informed decision; and positive/effective learning and development. At the knowledge
stage the content, importance and effect of the speeches will be explored, as well as their context. To
address informed practice/informed decision the paper looks more closely at the issues which are
raised in the speeches and their impact on Indigenous Australians. Finally positive/effective learning
and development will be acknowledged through the exploration of the education implications that
these issues can have in the classroom.
Analysis of Paul Keating's Redfern Park Speech
The Redfern Park Speech (Year for the World's Indigenous Peoples) was given by the Hon Paul
Keating PM on the 10th of December 1992. The speech was delivered in the suburb of Redfern, the
epicentre of Aboriginal culture in Sydney at the time and home to the Koori people. This speech
recognised that European settlers, and their descendants, are responsible for the hardships that
Aboriginal Australia has

Cultural Ignorance: Conflict Between Aboriginal And Torres...

TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE

Tina Kakantonakis
CHAPTER 4
DISCUSSION TOPIC: Cultural Ignorance is the major cause of conflict involving Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander people in work situations.
There has been a rise in numbers of workers and clients from various cultural backgrounds that have
entered our workforces and community services, including disability. This rise has become an
important factor that requires all employees to be culturally aware and supportive within their
working relationships with clients. One of their main priorities is to ensure that services are
culturally appropriate and welcoming.
Cultural ignorance is the major cause of conflict involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people in work situations due to many people not being culturally aware. Many cultural differences
have an impact in the workplace due to lack of awareness, knowledge and understanding.
Some of these differences include:

Their silence can be seen as them listening and thinking and/or waiting for support or input. Making
eye contact, in their culture, has been known to be a sign of disrespect, therefore you need to be
aware that this generally does occur and they often will look down. This can easily create conflict
with people who are not aware of this.
Indigenous Australians have been known to answer and agree with a "yes" quite often when asked
questions. This is due to the many years they encountered with a non supportive government system
that did not show any consideration towards their beliefs. They felt this was the easiest way to
remain out of trouble. In the workplace, again, being culturally unaware, this can easily lead to
bullying and making an indigenous person feel very uncomfortable and not

Sorry Day Australia Analysis
The 26th of May marks a day of nationwide reflection and reconcciliation, this annual event was
established in 1998 and was named Nation Sorry Day in 2005 (Australian Government, 2017). Time
is taken on this day each year to recognise the members of the Stolen Generations, brutality towards
Aborigines, and reflect on Australian history to ensure the country learns from it past so that it
cannot repeat its self. This national occasion ensure that reconciliation will continue far into the
future, and sends a message that the healing of Indigenous people is a journey which calls for the
participation of the entire nation. Kevin Rudd was the first Prime Minister to acknowledge the
actions of past governments in relation to the Stolen Generations,

Vital Vegetation Research Paper
Vital Vegetation I am going to volunteer at the Morongo Valley Nature Preserve. I will be trimming
plants and fixing the trails recently damaged by the rainstorm. I will prune the plants and repair the
paths so that people that come to see the Nature Preserve will enjoy the scenery. I am volunteering
on the 30th of September 2017. On 20th I will acquire my moms help to drive me to the Preserve.
To see what needs to be fixed so I can better prepare my self. Then I am going to go home and finish
my homework, so I do not have to worry about is over the weekend. The environment will be
helped by my project because plants need to be trimmed to be encouraged to grow. Plants also need
to be pruned allowing room for other plants to grow. Pruning the plants helps replenish the nutrients
in the soil. Pruning the plants allows worms to decompose the leftover debris from the plant. The
plant may use the nutrients the worm makes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Sapphires By Wayne Blair Essay
'The Sapphires' by Wayne Blair was the trigger that led my research into the effects of the Stolen
Generation on Aboriginals in Australia. This film is about an Aboriginal singing group who want to
make a name for themselves, but find it difficult because of the racism against them. This film also
tells the stories of their cousin Kay, who was a half–caste and was stolen from her Aboriginal family
at a young age to be taught the ways of white people, and forget her culture. This film made me
realise that I am lucky to live in a country where racism of such an extent in which children are
stolen from their indigenous families, isn't part of our history, and has not affected me personally.
From my research, I have found six main sources that have helped me to understand how large this
problem was and continues to be. My sources: 'The Sapphires' by Wayne Blair; a film about a group
of Aboriginal singers who are affected by racism which is based on a real life singing group; 'The
Sorry Speech', by Kevin Rudd who was the Prime Minister of Australia in 2008 who explains the
damage and apologises for the way that the actions of past governments tore apart the lives of their
indigenous people. Then there is 'Blind Eye,' the documentary in which people who were stolen are
interviewed and tell their stories. The film, 'Rabbit Proof Fence' this tells the story of two girls who
were stolen and gives us insight into how brutally that they were treated after being ripped apart

Safety is a huge factor in this volunteering, because if we are not prepared we could injure our

has also brought a heaps amount of water along with hats, lunch, snacks, and sunscreen. I will have
a backpack containing water just in case we need it when we are doing our jobs. Our project is
going to help our environment hopefully drastically. My team and I will pick up little pieces of
plastic. When birds or any alternative animal consume plastic the animal cannot digest it so the
plastic sits in many animal's stomach and builds up filling the bird completely with plastic.

President Harry S. Truman's National Prayer Day
First signed in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman, National Prayer Day was recognized and
celebrated on the first Thursday in May.
In honor of this monumental event, residents of Blythe joined in with millions of people around the
country on May 4, to call humbly before God, seeking his guidance for local, state and federal
leaders and current issues.
Asking for God's grace to fall upon this lost world, members of the community opened up the
program with prayer, followed by singing, "America The Beautiful."
Being reminded by the lyrics of the song, voices punctuated the line "God shed His grace on thee."
With this year's theme inspired by Daniel 9:19, master of ceremony Clifford Short said, "For Your

Having every president since 1952 signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation, Donald Trump
followed suit and signed the proclamation during the early morning of May 4.
"President George Washington said in 1789, it is the duty of all the Nations to acknowledge the
providence of the Almighty God. He said, "If we ever forget the that we are One Nation under God,
then we will be a Nation gone under," Short recited.
Through its purpose of having National Prayer Day, the task force organization seeks to mobilize
prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness throughout the world.
With over five pastors in attendance and 20 plus of their church members present, prayer began
around 5:30 p.m.
Turning to 2 Chronicles 7:14, Short read, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
Asking for prayer and repentance on behalf of everyone, Pastor Brandon of The Church of the
Nazarene prayed for the federal government, followed by Pastor Mick Catron of Calvary Chapel of
Blythe praying for local and state leaders, including the police, fire department and Mayor Joey

Kevin Rudd's Speech In The Stolen Generation
In February of 2008, on behalf of The Australian Parliament, Prime Minister of the time, Kevin
Rudd, presented a speech directed towards "the Stolen Generation". This extract addresses the
horrific losses that the Indigenous community has endured in the recent past, acknowledging the
mistreatment and offering stories of the abuse.
In the context of an influential speech, the correct use of language is essential. When attempting to
persuade listeners to agree with them, speakers must use a particular type of vocabulary, known as
emotive language, to evoke certain emotions within the listeners. Emotive language often uses
words that would be categorized as biased, and in a way, manipulates onlookers to feel sympathetic
towards the speaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does this technique reinforce clarity, but it also emphasizes the point that is being
discussed. Throughout the speech, Rudd continues to use words such as "sorry" and "apologise", as
a way of expressing his resentment towards what had happened in the past. For example, the word
"sorry" is used at the start of many sentences, in which, these sentences are all of the same format.
Rudd begins each of these phrases with a single word, in this case, the word is "sorry", then
continues to justify his argument, finishing each sentence off with a reason for his use of the
repeated word. He also structures his sentences in a way that is easier to be heard, keeping any
sentence that uses the repetition technique short. "Sorry for the physical suffering... Sorry for the
tragedy, the absolute tragedy, of childhoods lost... Sorry for all these injustices to you...". By
repeating these keywords, the message Rudd is trying to deliver will stick in people's minds a lot
more than if he were only to say the phrase

The Long Journey Undertaken By Indigenous Australians
The long journey undertaken by indigenous Australians in their search for equality, respect and legal
ownership of what is rightfully theirs, has been a long, bloody battle spanning the last 200 years and
unfortunately remains largely unresolved. The Close the Gap Campaign is one example of positive
attempts to strengthen the indigenous / white relationship as it offers numerous support systems for
the indigenous, from the government. Another example of such positive steps is seen in 2008, when
the then Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd made an emotional speech to apologise to the Aborigines and
Torres Strait Islanders for the terrible suffering and heart wrenching battle they have experienced
before, during and long after the Stolen Generation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The British killed thousands of Indigenous people including whole families; they stole away the
land that the Indigenous Australians had been spiritually connected to their whole lives. Another
disaster for the aboriginals was that the Europeans brought diseases and famine to the country which
killed a major percentage of the population. The British were taking what the Indigenous rightfully
owned and started to destroy and change it drastically. The Indigenous had to abide by the European
rules and had to change their culture and beliefs to fit in.
The Apology speech by former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, was presented in front of Indigenous
Australians that were and were not affected by the Stolen Generation and also non–indigenous
Australians. Both indigenous and white Australians have their opinion on The Apology regarding
what it means for them, what it has resolved or if it has added fuel to the fire. Mr Gary Foley, a long
time Indigenous activist outlined his views when stating;
"I think it should be taught in Political Science classes as an example of the duplicity and deceit of
politicians. And it should be taught in psychology classes in terms of how a nation appeases itself of
its guilt. And it should be taught in drama school as a classic example of Australian political
comedy. And it should be taught in driving school as a magnificent example of defensive driving

opportunity to reunite with their loved ones. The bringing back of the stolen generation to their
friends and family was an imperative event for the citizens of the Aboriginal people. It signified that
they were once again treated as a human beings rather than being treated as moveable property.

The Age Of War And Displacement By Simon Wiesenthal
In the Age of War and Displacement is characterized by imperialism, nationalism, racism, and
power. In an era of both freedom and confinement, Simon Wiesenthal describes his experience of
the Holocaust, which is used to analyze, what it means to be human. After World War One (WWI),
the Germans lost, "Hitler assumed authority and began to blame the Jews for what happened in
WWI" (Bingle). Within a few months, Germans started to believe Hitler that they were the master
race or supermen, and had no trouble committing genocide of any group Hitler labeled as "bad" or

between the murderers and their victims, between our camp commandant, Wilhaus, and a tortured

primary country to demonstrate this, with National Socialism. Germans showed their patriotism and

National Apology Case Study
A landmark event for Aboriginal People's struggle for rights is February 13, 2008, when in Federal
Parliament the then–Prime Minister Kevin Rudd stood up to apologise to the Aboriginal People, for
Australia's past mistreatment on laws, policies and practices that effected the people of the stolen
generation (Welch, 2008 and National Sorry Day Committee, 2014). Aboriginal People have
struggled for rights since the British came to Australia but it was especially highlighted when the
Aborigines Act 1905 came out. There were multiple things that lead to this landmark event, though
the Bringing them Home Report in 1997 was a huge step in helping the apology to come about
(National Sorry Day Committee, 2014). This essay will discuss in more depth what led to this event,
what the goals of the apology were, what the outcomes were and the ongoing impact has resulted.

Essay about How to Make an Effective Business Apology
How to Make an Effective Business Apology
Whether it's a missed deadline, a flawed product, or a billing error, somebody got injured, and even
if the offending party is savvy enough to acknowledge the gaffe, there's far more to an effective
apology than just, "Whoops! Sorry."
When your turn to beg pardon arrives, here are the five steps to follow in completing an effective
apology:
FIRST, OWN THE PROBLEM
This is your bad. Even if it was a representative or underling who blundered, accept responsibility
personally. Your customer, client, or creditor trusted you, if not one–on–one then by extension. They
took your company's word that you were going to do what you said you were going to do. They put
their faith in you, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Step up to the plate. Say: "This is my responsibility. I will handle this personally." Anything much
different from those very words is a cop out. And of course you must follow through on your
commitment to personal attention, so be prepared to present your business card and offer your direct
phone number to back up your pledge.
SECOND, STATE SPECIFICALLY THAT YOU ARE "SORRY" AND THAT YOU
"APOLOGIZE"
Strangely, these two crucial words often get lost or conveniently forgotten during the apology
process, as if by uttering them we reveal weakness. But you've already acknowledged fault and
personally owned up to the problem, so set your ego aside and don't choke on the words. Your
ability to be direct and specific will convince the injured party you understand the gravity of the
situation and can empathize with them in the predicament you've perpetrated. Take a deep breath,
make eye contact, and state clearly: "I'm sorry. I apologize." That's not weakness; that's courage.
THIRD, EXPLAIN IN DETAIL HOW AND WHY THE MISTAKE WILL NEVER HAPPEN
AGAIN
You can't stop after the first two steps. Those are just words – good words, but words nonetheless.
Now you must do something. You must ferret out the cause of the mistake and change the policies,
procedures, processes and/or people that either caused it or enabled it, and you must then present
your analysis and the changes it

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are the Indigenous people of Australia who have lived on this

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, they started to view the Indigenous through the lense of
scientific racism and Social Darwinism, which gathered an opinion for them to either accustom in

Let's take it back to the 27th of May, 1967. The Australian Referendum, called by the Holt

Australians should be given the right to vote. Although this was a successful referendum, in the
government's eyes, this was going to give the recognition that the Indigenous Australians wanted.
But it didn't. The goal was to achieve a transformative lobby to concede the adverse wrongs of our
colonial past. If that is so, how is it that 50 years later, this multicultural country and its government
are still continuing to fail the First Australians, and ignoring the recognition they deserve – to be
recognised in the Constitution.

The Stolen Generations By Ashley Condon
Stolen Generations Speech– Ashley Condon
The Stolen Generations is a term that is well known by nearly every Australian Nationwide. They
were the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders that we forcibly removed from their families whilst
still children. The removals of these children occurred between 1909 and 1969. It is unknown how
many suffered this but it is estimated to be around 100,000. The children were generally taken by
Australian government officials or State and territory authorities as well as police men or other
agents of the state. They had enough power to remove and then locate these children to other non–
indigenous homes, communities or places like institutions or camps. Such institutions existed in
places like Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia, Doomadgee Aboriginal Mission in
Queensland, Ebenezer Mission in Victoria and Wellington Valley Mission in New South Wales.
Aboriginal children were targeted because the Australian public and governments believed that they
were disadvantaged, at risk in their homes and communities, they need a better education or a better
family. They were being removed to be brought up in a white Australian family therefore adopting
their habits and values. They wanted to limit the amount of children being neglected by their parents
as well as those being affected by malnourishment because of their parent's poor wages. This was
known as racial assimilation, meaning they had the right to live as members of a single

Isolation And Alienation In Australia

  • 1. Isolation And Alienation In Australia Isolation and alienation are two recurring factors that have occurred throughout history and are ongoing aspects which materialize in contemporary society. These forms of isolation and alienation are caused and influenced by the power of language, discriminating against individuals and groups due to their religion, culture, values, beliefs, appearance, gender, etc. The knowledge and understanding towards particular minority groups have been drastically affected by segregation and the misleadence of the media and political voices. As society and technology have evolved, however, the form of segregation has changed and the degree of treatment and isolation towards minority groups. Although the majority of contemporary society has accepted various minority groups as equals there are still those few people who degrade and look down upon them based on the beliefs, cultures, country, values, and the media and political voice influences. Each group whilst confined and secluded for differing reasons, all are equally affected by the power of language and the ideal socio–cultures of the time. Based on political and media influences, individuals and groups are victims of alienation and isolation, with the degree varying due to the power of language and the era of the occurrence. ... • 2. National Public Land Volunteering I volunteered at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve on National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day promotes outdoor enjoyment, volunteering, and conservation of public lands. This event took place on September 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. To do this, I filled out a permission slip handed out by Ms. Zacks. I arranged a ride from my mom and gathered the needed supplies. Park rangers assigned volunteers and I specific tasks to complete for the following six hours. A small group and I were assigned the job of trail trimming, where I made the trail safer and more enjoyable. Volunteering is key to creating a healthy environment. • 3. The Stolen Generation Research Paper The Lost and Stolen The Stolen Generation. It was, no it is a major part of Australian history. It is horrible and unthinkable. It was thought to be one of the darkest times in Australian history because the "Whites" treated the Aboriginals as inferior and that they should follow their rules, even if the British were the ones who invaded them. From a number of sources the public can see that Aboriginal people had so many terrible things happen to them. They had their children taken away from them. Their culture and native customs, even their names and identities were striped from them. Why did this happen? What was the reason behind this? The answers to these questions are still being searched for. A powerful and startling example of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason behind the stolen generation was to breed out aboriginality, it was thought that if the children could be raised in white society then when they were adults they could integrate without much trouble. What the government didn't know is that the aborigines didn't want to be integrated into white society, they wanted to keep their culture and ways. In 1994 there was a conference in Darwin called the Going Home Conference. Over 600 people who were taken as children in every state and territory of Australia came together to share life lessons and experience and to also talk about their native culture to keep it alive in their ... • 4. The Song Took The Children Away By Archie Roach The stolen generation Task 1 The song 'Took the Children Away' by Archie Roach is a song about the stolen generation. The stolen generation is a major event that happened in Australian history. This happened between the 1890s and 1970s as many aboriginal children that were 'half–caste', were forcefully taken away from their families, to live in girls and boys houses, missions or foster families. At the age of 18 they were then released, still many didn't find any family or relatives. Some children never learned anything traditional and received little or no education. Instead the boys to be stockmen, girls were trained to be domestic servants,. This plan was part of a scheme by the government called assimilation policy the government forced indigenous australians to live the life as a white Australian, so government workers would come and take the kids from their homes and place them in to white australians home to live. About 100,000 Aborigine children who were taken from their families and adopted into white households as part of the government's program of forced assimilation. On the 26th May 1998, the first National Sorry Day was held. It was one year since the release of 'Bringing Them Home', the report from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Narrative Essay About An Elf Queen The privilege of being young is having infinite possibility to become whatever I want – from princess to T–Rex – at least in my imagination. In my own fantasy world, I crowned myself as an elf queen who reigns over the forest nearby my house. Everyone – even our parents, neighbors, teachers – looked upon their majesty and respected her sovereignty ever since her coronation ceremony. As a royal guardian and a ruler, her daily routine included looking around her territory, playing with trees, showing everyone how beautiful she is and inviting other magical creatures to her castle. Dressed in pink satin dress, holding a star–shaped wand, she marched down her own runway every day. By the time the elf queen reached the age of eight, she started ... On behalf of the Parliament of Australia, I am sorry" (Kevin Rudd, Apology, 2008). In 2008, Kevin Rudd stood up and made a speech in regards to the stolen generation of Aboriginal Australian People. He made an apology on behalf of the government for the way in which the Aboriginal People were treated. This speech was, and still is, a very significant event that occurred in Australia's history. Whilst many Aboriginal People are thankful for the apology on behalf of the white Australians, many still feel mistreated and upset over the issue (M Silby, 2013). The stolen generation refers to a time in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, governments have not undertaken sufficient steps necessary to overcome the health inequality of Indigenous Australians. Since Kevin Rudd's speech, there is still approximately a seventeen year gap between Indigenous and non– Indigenous Australian life expectancy. Indigenous people have a greater burden of life threatening diseases, due to inaccessible and unaffordable treatments. Indigenous children also have higher rates of hearing loss, as a result of untreated diseases (T Calma, n.d.). The speech, was an attempt to spread awareness of these issues and to possibly overcome them. However, these statistics demonstrate how little action has been accomplished by the Australian Government, to provide equal rights and freedoms for the Indigenous Australians (L Behrendt, ... • 7. Personal Narrative: Nanowrimo When I was thirteen, I finished National Novel Writing Month for the first time. High on caffeine and enthusiasm, I crossed the 50,000 word threshold on day twenty–three. Even though I've won NaNoWriMo every year since, that was still the proudest moment of my life, not because I wrote The Great American Novel (ha ha, not even close) but because I proved that it's possible to sit down and accomplish something huge, even when you had no road map and no idea what you're doing. Mind you, that doesn't mean that it's easy. On the contrary, NaNoWriMo might be one of the hardest things I've ever done. You're writing a 200 page novel in a month. I don't care if you're Stephen King; if you think that's easy, you're crazy. But even when I'm lying on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Reflection Of Storycorp Interview Introduction This paper will discuss the recent events that have happened in this past week. The results of the personality and values test. How the StoryCorp interview got me closer to my mother. What I learned about the photographic work field in my informational interview. The online programs I plan to use for my 21–day APP project. How I hope this class will help my growth as a person. Summary of Key Findings from Interest, Skills, Values and Personality Surveys I generally try to be kind to others and I greatly enjoy making people laugh. I would like to incorporate humor into my Capstone Project and show the beauty of nature. I want my pictures to make people happy whether it is by laughing or admiring nature. I believe this project will go well with my personality. StoryCorps Interview Reflection Karen, my mother, and I talked about family and religion. My mother is a family based woman, she has become more religious in her age. I asked her what her favorite memories of me were and she brought up events so far in the past I had forgotten them. It was nice to reminisce about events long past and talk about Heaven. We do not normally talk about Heaven so it was nice to hear her thoughts about it. Informational Interview Results The Capstone Project I have chosen does not need a higher education to pursue after. Mr. Dunahee explained that the degree he went in for was not for photography. He had ended up in this work field after a friend paid him to do his wedding shots. Mr. Dunahee told me this after we had finished our interview, I was unsure whether to add it in or not. Photography is a constantly adapting in order to keep up with all the new technology made available. Why pay for a photographer when your phone can handle the job? While I greatly admire the field I do not think it would be a suitable career choice for me. After the interview, Mr. Dunahee encouraged me to join his class to learn more about photography face to face. While the offer is tempting, I fear I do not have time to join his class due to my demanding work schedule. 21–Day APP Project Since my work schedule is very hectic I have chosen to take online class to learn more about photography. • 10. Indigenous Speeches: Exploration of the Mabo Case, Stolen... Exploration of the Mabo Case, Stolen Generation and Reconciliation Both Keating's and Rudd's speeches are firmly based on the ideas of recognition and reconciliation for the wrongs that European settlers, and their decedents, have inflicted on Indigenous Australians. To explore this idea I believe that it is necessary to take a closer look at both the plight of Eddie Mabo and the stories of the Stolen Generation. The Mabo Case Eddie Mabo is widely known for his plight to regain land rights for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In 1982, along with four other Meriam people from Murray Island, he initiated legal proceedings in the Queensland Supreme Court claiming customary ownership of their lands on Murray Island. This ... Few managed to find themselves being adopted into loving and nurturing white families, but these children still suffered great losses such as loss of language and connection to country. The act of child removal was not only damaging to the children but also to their families, communities and country. Families, in particular mothers, were put through immense grief when their children were taken away for 'a better life'. I believe the best was to illustrate this is to engage with the stories of those who experienced the trauma. When Margaret Tucker and one of her sisters were removed, their mother completely broke down. Margaret's recollection puts into perspective just how much grief was left behind. She wandered off the road to rest in the long grass under a tree. That is where old Uncle and Aunt found her next day. They found our mother still moaning and crying. They heard the sound and thought it was an animal in pain. Uncle stopped the horse and got out of the buggy to investigate. Auntie heard him talking the language. She got down and rushed to old Uncle's side. Mother was half–demented and ill. They gave her water and tried to feed her, but she couldn't eat. She was not interested in anything for weeks, and wouldn't let Genevieve out of her sight. She slowly got better, but I believe for months after, at the sight of a policeman's white helmet coming round the bend of the river, she would find her little girl and escape into the bush, as did all the ... • 11. Stolen Generations Between 1910–1970, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their family and community as the result of the Government's belief in the black inferiority and white superiority. The children affected by the government issued child removal policies were known as the Stolen Generation. These children were raised rejecting their own heritage and forbidden to speak their traditional language while under the care of their adoptive white family or institutions. The forcible removal of these children impacted not only the indigenous people but also the culture itself. Many of the Stolen Generations suffered physical, mental and sexual abuse and received very low level of education; while the culture itself is disrupted and lost. The report of the National inquiry into the segregation of aboriginal and Torres strait islander children from their family, entitled 'Bringing Them Home', was proposed in parliament on the 26 of May 1997; the day prior to the the opening of the National Reconciliation Convention. I think when you are choosing to be alone, it is being you either want or need to, so it becomes a positive activity. On the other hand, if you are being left out, it can be a negative one. I used to get left out a lot with my "friends," I mean I still do. But I have learned to accept the fact that you will not always be included in everything, and that is okay. • 13. Personification In Sorry Song Reconciliation is an act of restoration, to unite, unify and up bring a stronger and more functional relationship between the Australian and Aboriginal community. To achieve complete reconciliation attempts from films, poetry, novels and other limitless elements, have been constructed to reflect the attitudes and values of the context in which are designed to accomplish this virtuous goal. Evidently, they demonstrate to be positively effective, through the countless response of the wider community. A powerful illustration that embodies a similar attitude, value and belief is Kerry Fletcher's, Sorry Song. Written during the early years of indigenous rights, comes arguably one of the most iconic messages, of the Stolen Generation. Through purposefully using repetition and personification in each verse, Fletcher is without doubt singing in determination to expose the ugly history; federal governments effortlessly try to keep buried. Moreover, these techniques become equally more magnificent, when its context is directed and communicated through a non–aboriginal woman, despite the political arrogance at the time. However, In the light of what today symbolises, let us explore the hidden meaning behind Fletchers motivation, which helped mole the true significance of NAIDOC Day. Through the significant use of repetition, the Sorry Song is able to effectively communicate Fletcher's message, in a much more engaging and notable manner. This, evidently, implants in us the spirit of reconciliation, as the text expresses its views of the painful remembrance towards The Stolen Generation. However, the true beauty of using repetition is its ability to manipulate simple sentences, into a more memorable phrase. In the Sorry Song, it is consumed with repetition, because Fletcher knew, the power it contained, was essential to achieve complete resolution through the repeating of simple verses. In other words, Repetition helps bring remembrance and as a result creates reconciliation. Thus, without this technique, the meaning will lose its effect, destroying the purpose of what this iconic song symbolizes. A great illustration of repetition is Fletcher's unique skill of repeating words that are utilized in any given situation. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter how effective your communication skills, how sensitive you may be, or how compatible or in love you might be with your spouse, sooner or later you are bound to do something that will either hurt or embarrass your partner. How then do you know when you have wronged your partner and to sincerely apologize? An apology need only be made for something that in retrospect the giver sincerely intends not to repeat. It means taking responsibility for something that you genuinely feel remorse over and intend not to repeat. A sincere apology has the power to heal a world of hurts. It is a magic wand that can melt the hurt and restore your relationship. Saying "I am sorry" and meaning it is a miraculous healing tool. • 15. Indigenous Australian And Torres Strait Islands MODERN HISTORY Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Island cultures have the oldest living history in the world. They trace back at least 50,000 years and some argue closer to 65,000 years. Events, policies and attitudes of the past have impacted this rich and diverse culture. Through progressive movements and other agencies of social, cultural and political change, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have been inspired by hope for change to respond to challenges in ways that promote wellbeing, with varying degrees of success. An historical inquiry into hope, using Indigenous Australia as a case study is the required task. Key events, the actions of individuals and groups, and beliefs and values will provide evidence on patterns of change and continuity over time. The 2008 Australian government apology recognised the treatment of the Stolen Generation. Hope through the deliverance of the apology was motivated through achieving reconciliation in Australia and to apologise to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. I would always pretend to be asleep until he knocked, and then I would jump into my father's arms. We called our little game "Knock, knock" and played it every single day. However, one day, the knocks stopped coming. My father was no–where. I was fatherless. I constantly asked my mother where my father had gone. I wanted to resume our daily game of "Knock, knock". She would not say a word to any of my questions. Yet, one day, a small tear rolling from her eyes answered them all. Eventually, she got a telephone call explaining where my father was. The news was bittersweet. My mother wouldn't tell me anything, except that we were going on a short drive. We hopped into the car, neither of us knowing how the day would turn out. The drive seemed to last years, aging each one of us to a new level of maturity in preparation for the meeting with my father. We finally stopped at the Georgia County Jail. I looked at my mother in shock, unable to believe that this was where my father was. A small nod and the look of her eyes told me she felt the same confusion I did. She pulled me inside, where I saw lots of brown faces. I scanned each of them quickly, desperately looking for my father. I saw him and beamed with joy! My father was merely 10 feet away from me. • 19. The Importance Of Australian Day In Australia If young Anglo Saxon Australians don't understand the 'national' sentiment of the day, why do we continue with celebrations like Australia Day? One would have thought that a 'multicultural' society like Australia would have grown out of nationalism, and instead embraced a more, contemporary cosmopolitan identity. Surely in a globalised, interconnected world, we're all "citizens of the world"? (Scanlon, the Conversation 2017) Seemingly this is the case for Australia, ideas of the 'nation' have changed over time, into what one could call a cosmopolitan national identity. Therefore, the sentiment white, Anglo Saxons tie to Australia day, like Senator Brandis (ABC, 2017) who argued that Australia Day was the point in time which the "modern Australia we now recognise, had its beginning," is indeed, imagined. Contrary to what Anderson proposes, in the case of Australia, it can be said that the primary day of celebration is racist toward Indigenous people. Hence the campaign to Change the Date, reveals the inextricable links between the two terms. The 26th of January belongs mostly to an Australian that was happy to define itself as being for the white man. To reiterate, Australia Day is not just offensive to the Indigenous population, but it is a day, of all days that the Indigenous population don't feel 'Australian' (Bond, The Conversation, 2015). Dan Sultan (ABC, 2017) agreed while it was a good idea to have a national day of celebration, the current day should be see as one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Women, Men And Politeness Analysis In her book Women, Men, and Politeness (2013), Holmes analyzes the differences in politeness between men and women when it comes to each gender's use of language. According to Holmes (2013), apologies are perceived as negative politeness devices used in order to restore social relations after an act of wrongdoing. This applies to the genderlect theory because of the difference in styles of men and women's language. The theory suggests that women presume a relational approach in which they seek to interact with others while men use more of an instrumental approach to get things done. In an effort to talk to get things done, men tend to use more formal politeness strategies as illustrated in the following example in Women, Men, and Politeness: (11) Ken has taken a colleague out for lunch. I must apologise for the lousy service here. They're not usually this bad. But the food's pretty good you see. (p. 162) Women, by contrast, use strategies that focus more on re–establishing social harmony. (14) Elizabeth interrupted her friend. Sorry I didn't mean to interrupt you. (p. 163) ... Similar to Holmes' example, the ad depicts this situation to show how instantaneously women recognize and fix their offence for something that occurs in everyday situations. This correlates with the idea that women interact with others in order to avoid conflict as much as possible. Therefore, Tannen's genderlect theory is supported in the Pantene ... The structure of this paper will follow the Cultural Competency Framework as a means for exploring the above stated speeches. This framework moves through knowledge; informed practice/informed decision; and positive/effective learning and development. At the knowledge stage the content, importance and effect of the speeches will be explored, as well as their context. To address informed practice/informed decision the paper looks more closely at the issues which are raised in the speeches and their impact on Indigenous Australians. This film is about an Aboriginal singing group who want to make a name for themselves, but find it difficult because of the racism against them. This film also tells the stories of their cousin Kay, who was a half–caste and was stolen from her Aboriginal family at a young age to be taught the ways of white people, and forget her culture. This film made me realise that I am lucky to live in a country where racism of such an extent in which children are stolen from their indigenous families, isn't part of our history, and has not affected me personally. The Apology speech by former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, was presented in front of Indigenous Australians that were and were not affected by the Stolen Generation and also non–indigenous Australians. Both indigenous and white Australians have their opinion on The Apology regarding what it means for them, what it has resolved or if it has added fuel to the fire. Mr Gary Foley, a long time Indigenous activist outlined his views when stating; "I think it should be taught in Political Science classes as an example of the duplicity and deceit of politicians. And it should be taught in psychology classes in terms of how a nation appeases itself of its guilt. And it should be taught in drama school as a classic example of Australian political comedy. And it should be taught in driving school as a magnificent example of defensive driving and evasive tactics and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Age Of War And Displacement By Simon Wiesenthal In the Age of War and Displacement is characterized by imperialism, nationalism, racism, and power. In an era of both freedom and confinement, Simon Wiesenthal describes his experience of the Holocaust, which is used to analyze, what it means to be human. After World War One (WWI), the Germans lost, "Hitler assumed authority and began to blame the Jews for what happened in WWI" (Bingle). Within a few months, Germans started to believe Hitler that they were the master race or supermen, and had no trouble committing genocide of any group Hitler labeled as "bad" or "subhuman". The Sunflower, address the nature and task of human but also gives a Jewish perspective of "Humanness". Wiesenthal asks, "Were we truly all made of the same stud? If so, why were some murderers and other victims? Was there in fact any personal relationship between us, between the murderers and their victims, between our camp commandant, Wilhaus, and a tortured Jews (Wiesenthal 7)? Nationalism is key characteristic in the 20th century and Germany was the primary country to demonstrate this, with National Socialism. Germans showed their patriotism and loyalty to their country and fellow citizens. "National Socialism affected many Germans... [it] was for them the fulfillment of their dearest wishes. It lifted them out of their insignificance. That is should come to power at the expense of innocent victims did not worry them" (Wiesenthal 91). • 35. Essay about How to Make an Effective Business Apology How to Make an Effective Business Apology Whether it's a missed deadline, a flawed product, or a billing error, somebody got injured, and even if the offending party is savvy enough to acknowledge the gaffe, there's far more to an effective apology than just, "Whoops! Sorry." When your turn to beg pardon arrives, here are the five steps to follow in completing an effective apology: FIRST, OWN THE PROBLEM This is your bad. Even if it was a representative or underling who blundered, accept responsibility personally. Your customer, client, or creditor trusted you, if not one–on–one then by extension. They took your company's word that you were going to do what you said you were going to do. They put their faith in you, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Step up to the plate. Say: "This is my responsibility. I will handle this personally." Anything much different from those very words is a cop out. And of course you must follow through on your commitment to personal attention, so be prepared to present your business card and offer your direct phone number to back up your pledge. SECOND, STATE SPECIFICALLY THAT YOU ARE "SORRY" AND THAT YOU "APOLOGIZE" Strangely, these two crucial words often get lost or conveniently forgotten during the apology process, as if by uttering them we reveal weakness. But you've already acknowledged fault and personally owned up to the problem, so set your ego aside and don't choke on the words. Your ability to be direct and specific will convince the injured party you understand the gravity of the situation and can empathize with them in the predicament you've perpetrated. Take a deep breath, make eye contact, and state clearly: "I'm sorry. I apologize." That's not weakness; that's courage. THIRD, EXPLAIN IN DETAIL HOW AND WHY THE MISTAKE WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN You can't stop after the first two steps. Those are just words – good words, but words nonetheless. Now you must do something. You must ferret out the cause of the mistake and change the policies,

They have a strong spiritual belief that closely ties them to their homeland of Australia. As Europeans settled in Australia and started to gain control over the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, they started to view the Indigenous through the lense of scientific racism and Social Darwinism, which gathered an opinion for them to either accustom in the white community or to die out. This outlook towards the Indigenous communities resulted in families being torn apart as children were taken away and put into missions that would teach them behaviours acceptable in the white society which had a great impact on ... • 38. Pros And Cons Of The Australian Referendum: Citizens Of... Let's take it back to the 27th of May, 1967. The Australian Referendum, called by the Holt Government is about to decide whether or not citizens of Australia believe that Indigenous Australians should be given the right to vote. Although this was a successful referendum, in the government's eyes, this was going to give the recognition that the Indigenous Australians wanted. But it didn't. The goal was to achieve a transformative lobby to concede the adverse wrongs of our colonial past. If that is so, how is it that 50 years later, this multicultural country and its government are still continuing to fail the First Australians, and ignoring the recognition they deserve – to be recognised in the Constitution. • 40. The Stolen Generations By Ashley Condon Stolen Generations Speech– Ashley Condon The Stolen Generations is a term that is well known by nearly every Australian Nationwide. They were the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders that we forcibly removed from their families whilst still children. The removals of these children occurred between 1909 and 1969. It is unknown how many suffered this but it is estimated to be around 100,000. The children were generally taken by Australian government officials or State and territory authorities as well as police men or other agents of the state. They had enough power to remove and then locate these children to other non– indigenous homes, communities or places like institutions or camps. Such institutions existed in places like Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia, Doomadgee Aboriginal Mission in Queensland, Ebenezer Mission in Victoria and Wellington Valley Mission in New South Wales. Aboriginal children were targeted because the Australian public and governments believed that they were disadvantaged, at risk in their homes and communities, they need a better education or a better family. They were being removed to be brought up in a white Australian family therefore adopting their habits and values. They wanted to limit the amount of children being neglected by their parents as well as those being affected by malnourishment because of their parent's poor wages. This was known as racial assimilation, meaning they had the right to live as members of a single ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
