Analysis Of La Migra By Pat Mra
In Pat Mora's poem, La Migra, she talks about a game being played. The title of the poem is the
game, but, it is not a game. She gives descriptions on the border patrol officer and the Mexican
woman he is looking for. She lists them separately and describes their strengths and weaknesses on
how to beat one another in this game. While us readers do not get a definite answer on who wins this
"game" we get a good sense as to who has the upper hand. By introducing the Mexican maid
second, the way she responds to the officer's remarks, she outsmarts him at his own game. This can
be drawn to a conclusion in which she wins the "game" and gets away. Pat Mora uses the
perspective of the officer, immigrant, and the image of running from the officer as a game to receive
the audience's attention. As readers of the poem, La Migra, we can use the theme and relate it to
today's feud about police brutality and injustices. Pat Mora easily obtains the audience's attention by
stating that the two characters will be playing a game. La Migra, is the Spanish translation from
border patrol in English. It is often heard and used in the media to instill fear in immigrants in the
U.S. towards deportation and troubling means. "Let's play La Migra" (Mora 528) is the first stanza
presented in the poem. Having this as the first line, it makes readers wonder. What game is it? How
is it played? What does La Migra mean? (to non–Spanish speakers). It grabs and keeps your
attention right form the get go because it gets you thinking about what game is going to be played
and wanting to find out more of the game itself along with the rules and players. While continuing
to read, more is introduced and us readers find out what kind of game it is. Then it bares the
question, why would this be considered a game? Immigrants today are living in constant fear of
being deported and taken back to their homeland where one can assume escaped life there in hopes
of a better life in the states. While this is a real–life situation that people deal with daily, the author
turns it into a game to interest the readers more and give insight into what is going on with border
patrol. Mora uses another strategy to keep the reader's interest, and that is by

United States Border Patrol is a federal law enforcement agency and is one of the largest in the
world. The purpose of the Border Patrol is to keep terrorists and the weapons terrorists use out of the
nation's borders. In addition, the Border Patrol also serves to ensure that international and trade is
conducted in a lawful way (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2014). As a federal agency, the
Border Patrol is under high public scrutiny. A federal agent that is accused of unethical behavior will
be in the national spotlight, and it will discredit the entire agency, no matter how isolated the
incident may have been. Thus, with any federal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Managers of CPB employees are held to the same standards of conduct as their employees. In
addition, according to paragraph 5.5 of the standards of conduct (Augilar, 2012), they are also
charged with providing advice and guidance to the employees under their command, and they must
also clear any confusion those employees might have with the document. Thus, managers are not
only expected to know the standards of conduct, but must be able to pass judgement on what is
ethical in the context of the document. Because the standards are always applicable to employees,
managers must be available to serve as mentors to their employees around the clock as well. While
it could be argued that the standards are ridiculously high, the organizational culture of the Border
Patrol is similar to the military. It is expected that federal agents are held to a higher standard due to
their duty to the nation. Blogger Tom Barry (2013), though critical of the culture of the Border

United States Border Patrol Research
The border patrol has been a major problem for many decades concerning illicit drugs entering into
the United States (Levinthal, 2012). Controlling the importation of illicit drugs is not an easy task.
Statistics confirm the combined United States border stretches approximately 7,000 miles
(Levinthal, 2012). The amount of government officials needed to monitor the importation of illicit
drugs is unimaginable. Moreover, the government has designated four agencies to reduce the
interdiction of drugs entering into United States territory. The four agencies for reducing illicit drug
control in the United States, includes (1) DEA, (2) the U.S. Customs & Border Protection Agency,
(3) the U.S. Coast Guard, and (4) the U.S. military (Levinthal, 2012). ... Show more content on

Coast Guard and is known as the leading marine drug interdiction (Levinthal, 2012). Drug
traffickers use marine passages for importing drugs from overseas (Levinthal, 2012). According to
Levinthal (2012), statistics report six million illicit drugs arrive by sea. In addition, a new method
drug traffickers are using to import by sea is the use of semi–subs, which can carry up to twelve
metric tons of cargo (Levinthal, 2012). In 2008, the Coast Guard seized seven metric tons of
Columbian cocaine due to Coast Guard's using helicopters and shooting the vessel down (Levinthal,
2012). In addition, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (1999) notes, "The interagency
mission is to reduce the supply of drugs from source countries by denying smugglers the use of air
and maritime routes in the transit zone. Finally, the last effort which the government utilizes to
combat interdiction is through the U.S. Military (Levinthal, 2012). The U.S. Military is proactive in
the enforcement of illicit drug interdiction (Levinthal, 2012). The military is completely on board
with law enforcement agencies, as well as, working with governments abroad (Levinthal, 2012). The
benefits that military personnel provide include, intelligence, planning, foreign knowledge, which
allow other agencies to complete the actions needed for interdiction of the illicit drug trafficking

Dorothea Lange : The Popular Image Of Dorothea Lange
The reason I chose the popular image of Dorothea Lange is because with the stance of immigration
in the 1900's many immigrant families were forced to live in impoverishment due to the lack
opportunities. The black and white photo shows no color and that reflects the mood of a rough time
for the mother and her children in the photo. Their clothes seem to be grimy and dirty and so does
their skin. The fact that the children seem to be turned away from the camera puts emphasis on that
they are in devastation and are in need. The mother and children's clothes have holes are slightly
tattered as if they were working in a harsh, rough environment. The negative area of the photo seems
to be a tent of some sort in the background and the material is worn out and slightly dirty. The dirt
etched on their clothes, body, and background just emphasizes that the area that they're living in isn't
a clean filtered place and that finding a way for necessities was difficult, especially in a time of
need. The explanation for choosing the image of people standing near a border–lined fence is
because it justifies the impact of not knowing what is on the other side, no matter what side you are
on. Multiple families are standing near the border fence and they all have different people on the
other side. There appear to be more people standing on the other side of the fence because they're
not allowed to be on one side. This results in immigration and having many families becoming
separated in

Critical Book Review Essay
To begin, I feel the need to state that this book was slightly hard to digest. I realize that I am meant
to elaborate on whether or not I agree with Joseph Nevins' thesis, but to be honest, I was rather
confused as to what that thesis is. The author jumped around quite a bit, giving the reader extensive
background information and lessons in history and geography, and yet, he managed to tie everything
back to the main story of Julio Cesar Gallagos. I think that, perhaps, the extraneous information
might have drawn too much attention away from Julio's story, and therefore, I found myself
becoming detached and uncertain of Nevins' central argument. Basically, I have concluded that
Nevins is a humanist. I believe that the main point of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevins admits that he felt "paralyzed" in this situation, despite being "outraged". However, an older
man in a suit and tie began to yell at the Border Patrol agents, comparing their behavior to that
which he had witnessed during the time period of the Nazis. In short, these Spanish–speaking
individuals were being treated as criminals, or as Nevins states, "permanent outsiders" (Nevins, p.
177). This was a very compelling passage, and it jogged my memory back to a time where I was
returning from visiting some friends in San Marcos, California. On this occasion, I saw for the first
time, yellow traffic signs on the side of the freeway that portrayed silhouettes of a man, woman, and
child holding hands in a running motion, with the word "Caution" posted above. To this day, that
image haunts me. That horrid traffic sign is probably still there, warning the people of Southern
California that immigrants are some kind of potential threat or something to be afraid of.
Additionally, I think that the majority of people who want to abolish illegal immigration, are not
worried about the dangers that individuals like Julio face, but are concerned with their own safety
from these outsiders. Nevins seems to capture this idea in his statement: "...Combined with the
state's power to mold the collective mind–set of its citizenry to distinguish between

Border Patrol The U.S. Border Patrol to me is very important to the United States of America and to
me as well. Without the Border Patrol, America would be a goat standing in the middle of a wolf
cage. The Border Patrol and their agents border the boundaries of America so we can be safe in our
homes. People don't realize how important any kind of law enforcement is, until the day that they
need assistance comes. I don't take our men and women who protect us Americans; it is something
that not everyone can say that they have. I have no one in my family that has worked with the
Border Patrol, and I want to be the first in my family to join the Border Patrol. I am from Del Rio

The U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation in 1924. Even though some changes have
affected every aspect of the operations from its early days, the values, professionalism, honor,
integrity, and respect helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the
same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our borders, "Mounted watchmen
of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent illegal crossings as early
as 1904" (Border Patrol History, web). The agent's efforts were undertaken only when resources
permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, "Though they never totaled more than
seventy–five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict the flow of illegal Chinese
immigration" (Border Patrol History, web). In 1915, Congress approved a separate group of
Mounted Guards. Most rode on horseback, but a few operated cars and boats. Although these
inspectors had broader arrest authority, they still largely pursued Chinese immigrants trying to avoid
the Chinese exclusion laws. The agents were immigrant inspectors, assigned to inspection stations,
and could not watch the border at all times, "Texas Rangers were also often assigned to patrol duties
by the state, and their efforts were noted as singularly effective" (Border Patrol History, web).

Descriptive Essay About My Dream
In my hands, i hold a ticket for my future. A ticket to what i hope to be successful. I envision myself
living in San Antonio attending The University of Texas at San Antonio. Studying criminal justice
and working myself up to the position of a Border Patrol Agent. Being raised by a single parent with
only one income has motivated me to pursue not only my dreams but to ensure that I'm living them
to the fullest. The thought of moving back to San Antonio fills me with joy. It may not be New York
or Seattle, but it just feels like home. Being in the city feels like a cozy cup of hot coco, the people
that make up this glorious area make visitors feel welcomed. I aspire to do the same once I become
one with this city. Compared to the small city of Weslaco, San Antonio has it all. From the historical
landmarks to the enjoyable amusement sites to the wonderful tasting food options, this place has all
I need and all I could ever desire. Every time I imagine San Antonio i envision going to Six flags
and visiting the zoo. To think that living here would give me time to access these sites is just
incredible. Something about this place just excites me, the feeling of being somewhere new where
my surroundings are divergent.
I can see myself walking the streets of San Antonio, thinking about how my life events brought me
to this exact moment, finally realizing that it's not a dream but a reality. The twelve years I spent in
grade school will have finally set me

La Migra Pat Mora
In the first line of "La Migra", Pat Mora opens the poem in an appealing way by stating "Let's play
La Migra" as if the poem that the reader is about to read is about any ordinary game (1). The poem
is a game of freedom that unfortunately many people face, putting at jeopardy the lives of all the
characters involved if factors turn against their favor. The prize of the winner is very simple for
each; if the immigrant woman wins she obtains the American dream, and if the border patrol wins he
has accomplished his duty of keeping immigrants out of the country. The author creates two sections
letting each of the two characters be vulnerable at one point but also have authority at another. In the
first section, the border patrol is the one to hold the authority. He repeatedly states "I can" over the
things he can do to the woman because he holds authority to do so (8,12). In the next second section
of the poem the author switches the authority around to the woman, and this is implied because at
the end of the poem she states "Get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I first saw it, it surprised me because it was in Spanish. The name was straightforward and I
knew it would talk about immigration from an immigrant's point of view. As I started to read the
poem it was somewhat different then what I expected. The poem indeed was from an immigrant's
point of view but also included a border patrol's perspective. What I had never expected for the
poem to be is to have an immigrant woman defying the authority of a border patrol. In most cases
immigrants are scared especially at the sound of "la migra" which is a slag word for immigration in
Spanish. In addition, when the speaker was the border patrol officer he made himself sound bad by
stating the things he could do to the woman. In most cases the speaker does not talk bad about
themselves especially if being of authority figure like in this

Personal Identity In My Life
I've lived my life according to the saying "why fit in when you were born to stand out;" therefore,
I've made a point to differentiate myself from my peers and my family. In my community, I
belonged to the 3.65% of people who identify as part of the Other category in my home town. As a
white girl in a Hispanic town, I was an outlier from the rich Hispanic Culture. This defined my life
from a young age and directed me to learn to thrive while standing out. At home, I was raised in a
household where at the end of the day we would congregate around the TV to watch the latest
football game. Although I adore spending time with my family, I would rather read than breathe; my
family does not relate to that. These circumstances, albeit sometimes daunting due to their secluding
side effects, have allowed me to embrace being unique and to capitalize on my individuality to
achieve my goals, in a world where I may have otherwise gone unnoticed. I was born and raised in
Laredo, Texas, a medium sized town located just north of the Mexican Border. 96% of the residents
identify as Hispanic, which leaves me in the 4% Other category. I was born and raised in Laredo
most of my life, however when I was four my family and I moved to Miami, Florida, due to my
dad's job as a border patrol agent. A mix of missing home and a fear of hurricanes caused us to pack
our bags and relocate back to Laredo in 2007. Even though I was born there, the three year

The Border Patrol State Essay
The Border Patrol State
In "The Border Patrol State" Leslie Silko makes accusations of the border patrol's mistreatment of
American citizens of Mexican decent, making the argument with almost evidence. Silko, a critically
acclaimed poet, sees the border patrol as a governmental assembly addicted to interrogation, torture,
and the murder of those they see fit.
Leslie Silko certainly makes accusations that some could argue far exceed the boundaries of
journalism integrity, and fail to deliver with evidence to back them up.

She tells a story of her and her companion Gus being treated as illegal immigrants although they
present Arizona identification.
They are pushed around and even have the dog unleashed on them. She goes onto compare the
treatment of Mexican–Americans by the United States Border Patrol to, "Argentina's "dirty war" in
the late 1970's"(124). From here it is onto how well the border patrol discriminates, and how they
will do their best to find any reason to bring the brown man down. Silko explains the way in which
people are detained. She actually reaches out to the reader and tells him or her personally how they
could identify themselves being detained. She makes claims throughout this explanation of how the
detainee is treated unjustly, like when she states, "They make it clear that if you force them to obtain
a search warrant for the car, they will make you submit to a strip search as well"(125). Silko starts to
bring some half–way evidence into the picture by talking about the more high profile cases of the
abuse of the border patrol's power. She gives us more facts as we reach the middle of the reading.
Eighty percent of the respondents from a survey done by the University of Arizona in South Tucson
identified that one in every five had been detained, mistreated, or questioned by INS agents in the
past two years. "Manifest Destiny...–"lock the door" is what it means now," introduces an idea Silko
finds to be just(126). The solution Silko says is no border. "Even

The United States Border Patrol
The United States Border Patrol has a mission and duty to protect our borders through regulating
laws and preventing illegal terrorists, drugs, and weapons from entering the United States. This has
been a clear goal ever since laws have been passed to help secure our borders back in 1924. The
need for Border Patrol and the demand for tighter security plans have been increasing due to
terrorist attacks on American soil, the presence of radical groups, and a high rate of crime in the
United States. The big idea here is that as crime continues to develop so will our border securities. I
would like to primarily focus on the current role of the Border Patrol versus what it might have been
in years past. Many tragedies have occurred in recent times more than what was experienced years
ago. The United States has suffered throughout the year 2000 and continues to suffer from severe
threats to the nation. It only makes sense to make changes and tighten our borders in order to help
prevent the ongoing crimes. If the Border Patrol does this than the individuals living in this nation
will live in a better and much safer environment. Along with their current role, the research on the
Border Patrol's changes that either have hindered their work or made them more effective will be
looked into as well. The role of the Border Patrol has significantly changed from the past when we
look at it today. In the past, Border Patrol has lacked in technology. A lack of technology hinders the

Argumentative Essay: Border Patrol In The United States
Long before Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president, border patrol has been an issue
talked about in abhorrence for years. In this cartoon the U.S. border patrol is patrolling the border
and drawn to a yellow sign that reads, "CAUTION," and has a silhouette of a family running.
Underneath that is another yellow sign, but this one reads, "OUTSOURCING," and features robbers
fleeing. The border control is looking at the signs puzzled. Through this drawing, Bennett asked his
audience, "Do we really want to vote for a man who worries more about families coming to the U.S.
to better their lives? Or people in the U.S. taking our profits and business to other countries?" As I
said earlier, questioning some of Trump's motives is questioning

United States Border Patrol has been around since 1904 enforcing and regulating laws under the
immigration and Nationality Act. U.S. border patrol is now under the Department of Homeland

jurisdiction and missions have changed to better protect the safety of nation. Although border patrol
is a need for any nation, their extensive acceptations to constitutional laws can often be taken
advantage of. The mission of the U.S. border patrol should be to prevent illegal aliens, which are a

Border patrol began tracking unauthorized and suspicious flights. They began patrolling domestic
flights after hijacking attempts brought about awareness. Anti–smuggling units such as BORSTAR

border patrol. Recently in Arizona, United States border patrol agents and Mexican federal police
officers have joined forces and are training together to coordinate patrols for the first time in history.
Bot groups will be joining together to fight the war against drug trafficking and the immigration

brighter then we thought. Also, improvements have been made to raise salaries and funds during the

Summary Of Bajadas By Francisco Cantu

during his time as a United States border control agent. He candidly writes about his experiences,
using imagery to describe the physical landscape of New Mexico in a way that mirrors his own
emotional landscape and answers the question that he grapples with most. Cantu writes, "There are
days when I feel I am becoming good at what I do. And then I wonder, what does it mean to be good
at this? I wonder sometimes how I might explain certain things..." (7). This important question is
what drives Bajadas; it is what compels Cantu to write so vulnerably. Through a journal–like

He writes of his job: "...I'm getting used to it, and I'm getting good at it. I can make sense of what
that means later" (15). He admits to knowing what it is to be good at his job, that he is adjusting to
it. Yet, by saying he "can make sense of what the means later," it is clear that he still struggles to
acknowledge what being good at his job implies about his character, and he doesn't want to add to
the weighted conscience that he already carries. Mirroring this admission is a description Cantu
gives of a lava field, where he describes it as, "...wet under the afternoon sun, rocks postmarked
from a time when the earth melted and simmered between erupting volcanoes, a molten crust
cracking and shifting as it cooled" (14). There are some important parallels to note between these
two passages. Cantu describes the lava field as being "postmarked" by prior events, just as prior
events and experiences have marked him. He acknowledges that he is "getting used to" his job and,
"getting good at it," insinuating that he is cooling and adjusting to life as a border patrol agent.
However, the images of the "molten crust cracking and shifting" point back to Cantu's conscience
and his unsettled feelings about what it means to do his job well. It's as if he's waiting for a moment
of eruption, a big event that will bring clarity. By saying that he "can make

During the assessment I continually focus on the more positive ways to combat human trafficking

stay vigilant and informed of the basic indicators of human trafficking. (U.S. customs/ border

patrol and are still able to today, but with the use of passenger planes being able to detect movement

Throughout the past two decades the Border Patrol has developed an extensive Strategic Plan that
has identified high risk traffic areas that are going to require more support both in technology but
personnel. The evolution of the Border Patrol as a risk–based, intelligence–driven law enforcement
organization is part of the transition following September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The continued
transition is key to the success of not only the CBP but the Department of Homeland Security; while
maintaining a positive relationship with Canada and Mexico to ensure international bond. The
cooperation was nonexistent a few years ago with Mexico, but with the focus on the borders
between these two nations a safe and successful operation will occur. Funding will be key to ensure
that the goals between Federal, state, local, tribal, and international partners is met. The end result is
obviously a secure border but technology and personnel are essential factors to meet the needs of the
goals outlined in the Department of Homeland Security. An investment must be made in the

The Causes Of The Border Patrol
This scenario is playing out on America's borders every day. The organization that manages the
Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, has become the largest federal law enforcement
agency in the nation, and with that distinction comes some scrutiny. Two articles were written, the
first by The New York Times, the other by the Associated Press, that highlighted some disturbing
trends within the agency. The number of Border Patrol agents more than doubled between 2004 and
2011, when they grew to over 20,000 employees, and that number continued to rise, reaching over
21,000 today. "Since...September 11, 2001, the focus of the Border Patrol has changed to detection,
apprehension and/or deterrence of terrorists or terrorist weapons, " but as the agency uses that motto
to grow its, it has become increasingly clear that they are more concerned with keeping certain
people out than keeping the border safe. "Increase in suicides among Border Patrol agents causes
alarm," by the Associated Press' Paul J. Weber addresses the disturbing trend of suicides among
Border Patrol agents. Between February 2008 and August 2010, 15 Border Patrol agents had taken
their own lives. There had not been a single suicide in the agency for four years prior to that point.
To further illustrate the significance of that trend: the national rate of suicide at the time was 12 for
every 100,000 people. The Border Patrol's rate was at 30 per 100,000. So why the sudden spike?

Analysis Of The Movie ' Caramelo ' By Sandra Cisneros
Caramelo, written by Sandra Cisneros, revolves around the main character Ceyala 's life and her

moves through Texas, Chicago, and Mexico, Cisneros exhibits the theme of identity through the
family's history, relationships, and other interactions the characters have with one another.
Everybody's role and identity within a latino family are explored throughout the text. Sandra
Cisneros uses smaller main ideas and symbols of home, love, roots, and womanhood in order to
further elucidate the greater theme of identity.
One of the symbols and smaller main ideas that the characters explore is the meaning of home.
Ceyala's family struggles to find their place, and identity. They question what or where is home,
whether it is family, the US, or Mexico. Cisneros uses the idea of home through many characters. In
the last part of this book, Cisneros uses Inocencio, Ceyala's father, and the conflict of when the
border patrol come and talk to him. After they converse, the border patrol commands that he moves
back down south to Mexico. His family later received the bad news of returning back to Mexico,
this sparks questions in Ceyala 's understanding of what is home. Ceyala's family had

Military Strength at our Borders
As todays military currently winds down from actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and other lands where
the current war on terror is being fought they face a downsizing that will return thousands home
looking for new employment options. Every one of these individuals whether enlisted or part of the
officer ranks have sworn to protect the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign
and domestic. If not taking the fight to the terrorist in their own lands, what better place to protect

One of the primary benefits of this program would be the information and resource sharing. Today's
military forces currently hold a level of operational experience not seen in decades. For over ten

between current border operations in Afghanistan and the historical security issues along the border.
A melding of the military tactics used to train Afghani security force on the protection of their own
border, historical US Customs and Border tactics and techniques along with effective rules of
engagement can reduce violence and illegal cross border flows. An initial "cross training" between
military tactics subject matter experts, military mission planning subject matter experts and
operational Customs and Border Patrol agents can be much more efficient and effective than
training a group of new agents. The ground tactics force is not the only aspect of this effort; their
primary mission should be the security of the engineering and construction force and surveillance of

A Rhetorical Analysis On Immigration Issues
Only a month has passed since the presidential inauguration, and the new administration has stirred
up much controversy in regards to the executive orders signed by Donald Trump in his first few
weeks of presidency, Though several weeks have passed, the infamous refugee ban and the border
wall initiative are continuing to shake U.S. politics, and the media has covered the many different
parts of what is on the minds of these Americans. A couple of common themes found throughout
these selected articles is the growing concern for the U.S. economy and international relations with
foreign countries in regards to the aforementioned hot topics of this month. Additionally, how

Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the past few weeks. Much of media has covered the
government's plans for a more strict immigration policy to secure the southern border, including the
waves of I.C.E. raids in several major cities throughout the country. Moreso, the Trump
administration is making changes to increase the pool of immigrants to be deported by giving
immigration agents the objective to go after criminals, as well as any undocumented person the
agent believes has committed a chargeable offense (Reyes, 2017). Such rhetoric is interesting,
especially in this case, because of the likelihood of once again relying on racial profiling for such a
job. Like the themes in Grgoire Chamayou's Manhunts: A Philosophical History, this plan for
eliminating undocumented immigrants as fast as possible with expedited removals dehumanizes
these people to just being an excess group that can be tossed to the side because they are not citizens
of our nation. These agents are actively seeking the undocumented and not hesitating to arrest and
detain, even expediting the process in order to avoid wasting time with court hearings. Also an
unsettling thought, if foul play were to happen in these raids, the question of who would be held
responsible? For example, the shooting of an unarmed Mexican national in 2010 by a U.S. border
patrol agent (De Vogue, 2017). Years have passed since the incident and it is still being debated in
the U.S. Supreme Court today. A disturbing thought to think that more questionable actions by
agents could arise from this mandate to increase the number of deportations and the known
tendencies to rely on racial profiling for such a plan. However many people have acknowledged this
violation of human rights and have protested this evil caricature that has been painted by the new
administration with their recent actions. A Day Without Immigrants was a nationwide

Not only are them causing our country distress but they are also not receiving a voice. They are
voiceless, they have no rights. One cannot vote or go to college and get financial aid or travel

problems and then be able to redo the border patrols infrastructure would be beneficial to both
parties. So that instead of having the cross the border in shady manners they can find peace in
knowing that when they come here they will be of value to their community and a part of this great
nation. There are many stabs that can be taken at this stance the information that it was backed up
with. By closing our borders we can also be then threatening the already fragile wall we have
between them. Instead of letting people try and come through there will be riots and violent protests
to get through. Mexico will probably shut down import and export relationships with our country
because they will not agree that it is fair for us to receive its' good but not it's people. The U.S will

The Use Of Drugs And Drug Abuse In The United States
Drugs are on the uptrend here in America, with more than 120 people dying per day of drug
overdose, according to the Penington Institute. Many people, including President Trump, have
pinpointed Mexico as a source of many of the drugs consumed in the US. President Trump voiced
his views in the speech in 2015 as he announced his Presidential bid: "They're sending people that
have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're
bringing crime." Mr. Trump is right about one thing: Mexicans are smuggling drugs into the US.
According to a report released by US Customs and Border Protection in 2015, 99.8% of
methamphetamine and 99.9% of marijuana captured by the organization were at the border shared
with Mexico.
Even though it is not possible to know exactly how much of the drugs consumed in the US are
imported from Mexico, it is reasonable to deduce from the Customs and Border Protection figures
that the percentage of drugs from Mexico consumed in the US is a high percentage. Even though
this is a major problem in our country today, drugs imported from Mexico and consumed in America
is a problem the the Mexican and American governments have been trying to solve for half a
century. Since the 1960s, the Mexican and American government have imposed ever–increasingly
stringent laws on the drug. However, this approach certainly hasn't decreased the use of drugs in
America, but why? I believe that the laws and policies put into action by the US and Mexico have
been largely ineffective because the institutions that put these laws into effect cannot enforce them,
due to lack of funding, corruption in all levels of government and law enforcement, and the lack of
knowledge on the drug trade.
One of the first investigations into the drug trade, Operation Intercept, occurred in 1969. The report,
published by the Secretary of the Treasury, David Kennedy, and the Attorney General, John
Mitchell, outlines and exposes many problems in the effort to curb the flourishing trade of drugs
from Mexico to America. One of the problems that is repeated several times is the lack of manpower
in multiple organizations, including Border Patrol and Bureau of Customs, two departments that are

Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil's Highway
Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of "desolation" in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story
to illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes
this through his usage of the word. The word "desolation" is defined as a state of complete
emptiness or destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration
shifts to life. Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance
of a work to go beyond its meaning. "The significance of that meaning is what may be called
allegory."(Bloomfield, 1972) Desolation's meaning spans much more than its definition in The
Devils Highway, A True Story. It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition.
Desolation and Cosmos define Desolation stating, "Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a
complex pattern." (Geyer, 1999) The allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the
Devils Highway.
In the author's note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: "But no story about death and the
Devil's Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating
glory." (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about
death could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow.
Urrea makes this well–known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the
two share.

If You Cross The River You Are A Criminal

Social inequality / pg 79: a social condition in which privileges and obligations are given to some
but denied to others.
A criminal is defined as a person who commits a crime. What happens when those crimes are
against humanity? How do we as Americans justify some of our laws, when they are morally
wrong? Our ancestors invaded, conquered, and eventually industrialized lands. Settlers initial goals
were to find better lives and opportunities. A few centuries later, we are denying immigrants the
same rights to seek out better lives and opportunities. Border patrol stated at the beginning of of the
film, "If you cross the river you are a criminal." In my opinion, it is criminal that we waste money
on the deporting system versus helping to civilize the southern countries. In The Harvest,
immigrants in the U.S faced the risks of making incomes like $64/week and not getting paid. The
film Wetbacks showed the perspective of the people South of the U.S borders. Families in the Latin
America 's average up to $70/month. Two dollars a day won 't buy one person a day food, let alone a
family. Almost everything is done by hand; breaking rocks, transporting water from the river,
washing/drying clothes, and producing/catching little food. I feel we should either open or extend
our borders. Some of our border laws need to be revised or eradicated. We hand money to people
who use the welfare system as a career. Why not employ immigrants for jobs Americans will never
do? Immigrants

United States Border Patrol
After analyzing many topics I am more anti–immigration than pro. My policy to stop immigration is
to hire more agents to enforce immigration laws at the border. Currently the US has a minimal
amount of agents at the border. With minimal amounts, the border patrol is missing huge amounts of
illegal immigrants which jeopardizes the US security. Increasing our agents at the border would help
reduce the drastic number of illegal immigrants entering the United States each year. With less
illegal immigrants the US will be able to do more thurow screenings of crime or terrorism with the
new numbers of hired agents. With my policy I will enforce a skills screening process too. This will

With restrictions on US benefits for illegal immigrants enforcing the ballot will force illegal
immigrants to leave, come back, and apply for citizenship because they will not receive the benefits
they need. I believe this is a harsh policy but is needed because the expenses to support these
services for everyone is costly. Second, I believe The Minuteman Project would be a helpful asset to
the border patrol. With the proper training and education this organization could be successful in
aiding the enforcement of immigration. However, having the military help the border patrol is a bad
idea because of their strong relationship with weapons. I believe that if we bring the military to the
border it will cause more harm than good. The military will create fear and violence at the border
which could cause many conflicts if enforcement is not done properly.
My view on Amendment 14 is indifferent. I believe that if your parent is not a documented citizen in

The U.S. Border Patrol
In 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation. Although changes have affected
nearly every aspect of its operations from its earliest days, the values; professionalism, honor,
integrity, respect for human life, and a shared effort, helped shape the Border Patrol from the early
years and they still remain the same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our
borders, "Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to
prevent illegal crossings as early as 1904" (Border Patrol History, web). The agent's efforts were
undertaken only when resources permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, "Though
they never totaled more than seventy–five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict
the flow of illegal Chinese immigration" (Border Patrol History, web). In 1915, Congress approved
a separate group of Mounted Guards, often called Mounted Inspectors. Most rode on horseback, but
a few operated cars and even boats. Although these inspectors had broader arrest authority, they still
largely pursued Chinese immigrants trying to avoid the Chinese exclusion laws. The agents were
immigrant inspectors, assigned to inspection stations, and could not watch the border at all times,
"Texas Rangers were also often assigned to patrol duties by the state, and their efforts were noted as
singularly effective" (Border Patrol History, web). Customs violations and intercepting

Due to this, Border Patrol agents often have to arrest and deport people who they are quite
sympathetic towards. Until the Mexican government straightens out the country, the situation is
destined to repeat itself many times over with no easy answers. Another public administrator who
faces conflicting ethical obligations on a daily basis is those who run the education systems. These
school administrators are confronted with many issues, none more serious than the budget. With
state governments across the nation facing deficits and decreased tax revenue, inevitably school
programs will see their budgets cut. A school administrator is often forced to choose which
programs will see the chopping block. They have to decide just how valuable extracurricular
activities are, and which ones deserve to continue to receive the limited funding available. An
administrator might have to choose between hiring a new teacher to improve the teacher to student
ratio, or cutting the soccer teams budget for that year. Each choice has its benefits as well as
drawbacks, and a school administrator must fully consider the merits of any decision. With the
economy still struggling, it is clear that qualified school administrators will have to make difficult
choices many times in upcoming years. The struggling economy does not merely

Each new rule is separating the chosen group, the 'us' allowed in and the others. The lack of
consideration demanded by the game in ignoring the pleas to bypass some of the many rules is
reiterating that the us is more important. Are there better doctors for polio in Arstotzka? It wouldn't
matter, it's better for the 'we' of the nation to disallow entry. Would that wife trying to join her
husband do any harm? It's not worth considering, it'll waste precious time in a limited day to give
her the benefit of the doubt. Each step of the way, the game is building a glimpse into what the
immigration process can be like, whether it's as blatant or as militant as in the game, whether before
or after, current new administration. Even before new developments, immigration was a harsh
process that harshly favors the 'us' over the 'them' even if the others are just people like we are on
this side of the border. References

The Distance Between Us Reyna Grande Summary
In The Distance Between Us, Reyna Grande describes of her life, how she came to this country with
difficulties. Grande was young that it was really hard for her to understand the circumstances that
were happening to her and her family. The relationship between the two passages is the different
directions, but their purpose is similar. The purpose of the two passages explains the struggle of how
a family from a different country is going to survive without any help. The first excerpt, 'Mi Mama
Mi Ama,' describes the tension and confusion of the writer's early stage of her life. They run from
there to here to survive and for their new and hopeful lives. This is before she moved to the United
States and the first night that she spent with eating bird food. The second excerpt, 'The Man Behind

survive, they conflict from getting ready to go to school, because they don't know a word of English.
Grande's father can't help them either because he doesn't know how to speak English. Grande's

My Experience In My Life
It was the 2000s. I had been without a job for at least a couple of weeks and was finding it extremely
hard to carry out my life in my village in Veracruz, Mexico. I used to own a farm but when the
temperature began to rise and the soil was less fertile, I had to put an end to it because I was unable
to plant or harvest any crops. In the past, this had been my main source of income but as the time

with the items they needed to be alive. After having a long talk with my wife, Emilia, I decided to
begin to consider many different options. We searched all of the village and even in nearby towns
trying to find a place that would hire me. We didn't find anything but did see a flyer on a pole that
was interesting. It said, "Go to America. You'll get hired for sure." Me and my wife were overjoyed
when we saw this. We immediately began to plan our move up North. We travelled the four hour
hike from the town back to our village, the whole way talking about how we would get there and
what we planned to do with our lives. We never said it, but we were all hoping that the words on the
flyer were true because it was our last hope. As we entered our shack of a home, we told Isabella

Mexican Immigrants
Undocumented immigrants who come to America have always been stigmatized, especially
Mexican immigrants. The novel "Into The Beautiful North" by Luis Alberto Urrea highlights many
of the issues faced by undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States. The main characters
in the book illegally cross the border from Mexico into America and go on a journey to better the
lives of everyone in their village back home. Throughout the story, they witness and experience
issues that Mexican immigrants face such as Border Patrol abuse, discrimination, language barriers,
and labor hardships. Though the story is fictional, it illustrates real life problems that need to be
addressed. There are efforts to solve these issues, but they lack support needed to really make
significant change in a timely manner. There are also various potential solutions, some more obvious
than others, but they simply have not been invested in due to reasons such as lack of supporters or
funding. Popular opinion and modern media portray undocumented Mexican immigrants are
portrayed as unwanted invaders who are here to ruin the country, but this is simply not true. They
are human just like Americans and they want to better the lives of themselves and their families.
People need to recognize everything that they go through just so they can live in this country. The
fact that undocumented Mexican immigrants endure many hardships so that they can escape the

Pros And Cons Of The Border Wall Essay

the increase in immigration and drug trafficking. Although the border wall aids in reducing problems
in our country, it is affecting the economy of the country and the health of our environment,
therefore the border wall is not the best solution.
Starting in 2006, the United States started to develop the wall along parts of the frontier between
U.S. and Mexico. There was 670 miles of the wall authorized to be assembled, and there were many
objections to it being built. Besides the oppositions, from 2006 to 2009 there was already more than
100 miles of the wall constructed (Gilman 258). Congress passed the "Illegal Immigration Reform
and Immigrant Responsibility Act" in 1996. The act gave power to the government to create walls or
barriers along the border, and it allowed it to seize land from people if it is imperative in protecting
the borderline of the country (Gilman 259). In 2006, the "Secure Fence Act" was passed that
instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a fence stretching from 5
different areas of the border. In 2007, there was 70 miles of the wall built in the Arizona and Mexico
frontier. Since this occurrence, the government then shifted its surveillance to the border along
Texas and Mexico in 2007, and started suggestions to assemble more than 100 miles of the border
wall by 2008 (Gilman 260). Towards the end of 2007, the

Hernandez V. Mes An Unarmed Mexican Citizen From A Border...
Hernandez v. Mesa involves the shooting of an unarmed Mexican citizen from a border patrol agent
within the United States. The 5th circuit of appeals ruled in favor of the government and now the
case is in the hands of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard the oral arguments of both
sides on February 21st, 2017. Hernandez v. Mesa can be traced to the 5th Circuit of Appeals using
three articles. The first article, "Mexican politicians urge Border Patrol agent 's extradition for trial
in shooting," was completed June 10th, 2010 and was featured on Cleveland.com. Cleveland.com is
the major news source for millions of viewers per month, based in Ohio in Ohio ("About us," 2017).

The second issue is whether Mesa violated the Fourth Amendment rights of Hernandez by killing
him and whether Hernandez would have qualified for those rights. The 5th Circuit of Appeals
contains mostly conservative justices with over two–thirds of them appointed by Republican
Presidents (Wray, 2014). When considering this case, the 5th Circuit of Appeals ruled that Mesa had
"qualified immunity and could not be sued by the teen's family" (Lipkin, 2015). The court also ruled
that Hernandez did not have a voluntary connection to the United States which would grant him the
protections of the Fourth and Fifth Amendment (Barajas, 2015). Something interesting about this
case is that it was originally ruled in Hernandez's favor the first time it reached the 5th Circuit by a
panel of three judges. However, the entire 5th Circuit eventually ruled against that decision to find
in favor of the government. This case was appealed to the Supreme Court and accepted on October
11th, 2016. Although the 5th Circuit of Appeals ruled against Hernandez, the Supreme Court
appears split. As a 4–4 court, Justice Kennedy has been the deciding vote in many cases. The oral
arguments and questions provide a window into the potential outcome of the case, and three
moments stand out. The first key moment is fifteen minutes, forty–one seconds into the oral
argument. Robert Hilliard, the representative of Hernandez, argues that the jurisdiction of the United
States extends into

Analysis Of La Migra By Pat Mra

  • 1. Analysis Of La Migra By Pat Mra In Pat Mora's poem, La Migra, she talks about a game being played. The title of the poem is the game, but, it is not a game. She gives descriptions on the border patrol officer and the Mexican woman he is looking for. She lists them separately and describes their strengths and weaknesses on how to beat one another in this game. While us readers do not get a definite answer on who wins this "game" we get a good sense as to who has the upper hand. By introducing the Mexican maid second, the way she responds to the officer's remarks, she outsmarts him at his own game. This can be drawn to a conclusion in which she wins the "game" and gets away. Pat Mora uses the perspective of the officer, immigrant, and the image of running from the officer as a game to receive the audience's attention. As readers of the poem, La Migra, we can use the theme and relate it to today's feud about police brutality and injustices. Pat Mora easily obtains the audience's attention by stating that the two characters will be playing a game. La Migra, is the Spanish translation from border patrol in English. It is often heard and used in the media to instill fear in immigrants in the U.S. towards deportation and troubling means. "Let's play La Migra" (Mora 528) is the first stanza presented in the poem. Having this as the first line, it makes readers wonder. What game is it? How is it played? What does La Migra mean? (to non–Spanish speakers). It grabs and keeps your attention right form the get go because it gets you thinking about what game is going to be played and wanting to find out more of the game itself along with the rules and players. While continuing to read, more is introduced and us readers find out what kind of game it is. Then it bares the question, why would this be considered a game? Immigrants today are living in constant fear of being deported and taken back to their homeland where one can assume escaped life there in hopes of a better life in the states. While this is a real–life situation that people deal with daily, the author turns it into a game to interest the readers more and give insight into what is going on with border patrol. Mora uses another strategy to keep the reader's interest, and that is by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Phl 323 Code of Conduct Code of Conduct Aaron Vazquez PHL 323 May 12, 2014 Alex Cardenas Code of Conduct The United States Border Patrol is a federal law enforcement agency and is one of the largest in the world. The purpose of the Border Patrol is to keep terrorists and the weapons terrorists use out of the nation's borders. In addition, the Border Patrol also serves to ensure that international and trade is conducted in a lawful way (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2014). As a federal agency, the Border Patrol is under high public scrutiny. A federal agent that is accused of unethical behavior will be in the national spotlight, and it will discredit the entire agency, no matter how isolated the incident may have been. In addition, according to paragraph 5.5 of the standards of conduct (Augilar, 2012), they are also charged with providing advice and guidance to the employees under their command, and they must also clear any confusion those employees might have with the document. Thus, managers are not only expected to know the standards of conduct, but must be able to pass judgement on what is ethical in the context of the document. Because the standards are always applicable to employees, managers must be available to serve as mentors to their employees around the clock as well. While it could be argued that the standards are ridiculously high, the organizational culture of the Border Patrol is similar to the military. It is expected that federal agents are held to a higher standard due to their duty to the nation. • 5. United States Border Patrol Research The border patrol has been a major problem for many decades concerning illicit drugs entering into the United States (Levinthal, 2012). Controlling the importation of illicit drugs is not an easy task. Statistics confirm the combined United States border stretches approximately 7,000 miles (Levinthal, 2012). The amount of government officials needed to monitor the importation of illicit drugs is unimaginable. Moreover, the government has designated four agencies to reduce the interdiction of drugs entering into United States territory. The four agencies for reducing illicit drug control in the United States, includes (1) DEA, (2) the U.S. Customs & Border Protection Agency, (3) the U.S. Coast Guard, and (4) the U.S. military (Levinthal, 2012). ... Drug traffickers use marine passages for importing drugs from overseas (Levinthal, 2012). According to Levinthal (2012), statistics report six million illicit drugs arrive by sea. In addition, a new method drug traffickers are using to import by sea is the use of semi–subs, which can carry up to twelve metric tons of cargo (Levinthal, 2012). In 2008, the Coast Guard seized seven metric tons of Columbian cocaine due to Coast Guard's using helicopters and shooting the vessel down (Levinthal, 2012). In addition, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (1999) notes, "The interagency mission is to reduce the supply of drugs from source countries by denying smugglers the use of air and maritime routes in the transit zone. Finally, the last effort which the government utilizes to combat interdiction is through the U.S. Military (Levinthal, 2012). The U.S. Military is proactive in the enforcement of illicit drug interdiction (Levinthal, 2012). The military is completely on board with law enforcement agencies, as well as, working with governments abroad (Levinthal, 2012). • 7. Dorothea Lange : The Popular Image Of Dorothea Lange The reason I chose the popular image of Dorothea Lange is because with the stance of immigration in the 1900's many immigrant families were forced to live in impoverishment due to the lack opportunities. The black and white photo shows no color and that reflects the mood of a rough time for the mother and her children in the photo. Their clothes seem to be grimy and dirty and so does their skin. The fact that the children seem to be turned away from the camera puts emphasis on that they are in devastation and are in need. The mother and children's clothes have holes are slightly tattered as if they were working in a harsh, rough environment. The negative area of the photo seems to be a tent of some sort in the background and the material is worn out and slightly dirty. The dirt etched on their clothes, body, and background just emphasizes that the area that they're living in isn't a clean filtered place and that finding a way for necessities was difficult, especially in a time of need. The explanation for choosing the image of people standing near a border–lined fence is because it justifies the impact of not knowing what is on the other side, no matter what side you are on. Multiple families are standing near the border fence and they all have different people on the other side. There appear to be more people standing on the other side of the fence because they're not allowed to be on one side. This results in immigration and having many families becoming separated in ... • 9. Critical Book Review Essay To begin, I feel the need to state that this book was slightly hard to digest. I realize that I am meant to elaborate on whether or not I agree with Joseph Nevins' thesis, but to be honest, I was rather confused as to what that thesis is. The author jumped around quite a bit, giving the reader extensive background information and lessons in history and geography, and yet, he managed to tie everything back to the main story of Julio Cesar Gallagos. I think that, perhaps, the extraneous information might have drawn too much attention away from Julio's story, and therefore, I found myself becoming detached and uncertain of Nevins' central argument. Basically, I have concluded that Nevins is a humanist. I believe that the main point of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevins admits that he felt "paralyzed" in this situation, despite being "outraged". However, an older man in a suit and tie began to yell at the Border Patrol agents, comparing their behavior to that which he had witnessed during the time period of the Nazis. In short, these Spanish–speaking individuals were being treated as criminals, or as Nevins states, "permanent outsiders" (Nevins, p. 177). This was a very compelling passage, and it jogged my memory back to a time where I was returning from visiting some friends in San Marcos, California. On this occasion, I saw for the first time, yellow traffic signs on the side of the freeway that portrayed silhouettes of a man, woman, and child holding hands in a running motion, with the word "Caution" posted above. To this day, that image haunts me. That horrid traffic sign is probably still there, warning the people of Southern California that immigrants are some kind of potential threat or something to be afraid of. Additionally, I think that the majority of people who want to abolish illegal immigration, are not worried about the dangers that individuals like Julio face, but are concerned with their own safety from these outsiders. Nevins seems to capture this idea in his statement: "...Combined with the state's power to mold the collective mind–set of its citizenry to distinguish between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay United States Border Patrol Border Patrol The U.S. Border Patrol to me is very important to the United States of America and to me as well. Without the Border Patrol, America would be a goat standing in the middle of a wolf cage. The Border Patrol and their agents border the boundaries of America so we can be safe in our homes. People don't realize how important any kind of law enforcement is, until the day that they need assistance comes. I don't take our men and women who protect us Americans; it is something that not everyone can say that they have. I have no one in my family that has worked with the Border Patrol, and I want to be the first in my family to join the Border Patrol. I am from Del Rio Texas, a border town neighbors with Mexico. Even though some changes have affected every aspect of the operations from its early days, the values, professionalism, honor, integrity, and respect helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the same today. Since the very beginning agents have been patrolling our borders, "Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent illegal crossings as early as 1904" (Border Patrol History, web). The agent's efforts were undertaken only when resources permitted. The inspectors were all out of El Paso, Texas, "Though they never totaled more than seventy–five, they patrolled as far west as California trying to restrict the flow of illegal Chinese immigration" (Border Patrol History, web). In 1915, Congress approved a separate group of Mounted Guards. Most rode on horseback, but a few operated cars and boats. Although these inspectors had broader arrest authority, they still largely pursued Chinese immigrants trying to avoid the Chinese exclusion laws. The agents were immigrant inspectors, assigned to inspection stations, and could not watch the border at all times, "Texas Rangers were also often assigned to patrol duties by the state, and their efforts were noted as singularly effective" (Border Patrol History, web). I envision myself living in San Antonio attending The University of Texas at San Antonio. Studying criminal justice and working myself up to the position of a Border Patrol Agent. Being raised by a single parent with only one income has motivated me to pursue not only my dreams but to ensure that I'm living them to the fullest. The thought of moving back to San Antonio fills me with joy. It may not be New York or Seattle, but it just feels like home. Being in the city feels like a cozy cup of hot coco, the people that make up this glorious area make visitors feel welcomed. I aspire to do the same once I become one with this city. Compared to the small city of Weslaco, San Antonio has it all. From the historical landmarks to the enjoyable amusement sites to the wonderful tasting food options, this place has all I need and all I could ever desire. Every time I imagine San Antonio i envision going to Six flags and visiting the zoo. To think that living here would give me time to access these sites is just incredible. Something about this place just excites me, the feeling of being somewhere new where my surroundings are divergent. I can see myself walking the streets of San Antonio, thinking about how my life events brought me to this exact moment, finally realizing that it's not a dream but a reality. The twelve years I spent in grade school will have finally set me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. La Migra Pat Mora In the first line of "La Migra", Pat Mora opens the poem in an appealing way by stating "Let's play La Migra" as if the poem that the reader is about to read is about any ordinary game (1). The poem is a game of freedom that unfortunately many people face, putting at jeopardy the lives of all the characters involved if factors turn against their favor. The prize of the winner is very simple for each; if the immigrant woman wins she obtains the American dream, and if the border patrol wins he has accomplished his duty of keeping immigrants out of the country. The author creates two sections letting each of the two characters be vulnerable at one point but also have authority at another. In the first section, the border patrol is the one to hold the authority. He repeatedly states "I can" over the things he can do to the woman because he holds authority to do so (8,12). In the next second section of the poem the author switches the authority around to the woman, and this is implied because at the end of the poem she states "Get ... The name was straightforward and I knew it would talk about immigration from an immigrant's point of view. As I started to read the poem it was somewhat different then what I expected. The poem indeed was from an immigrant's point of view but also included a border patrol's perspective. What I had never expected for the poem to be is to have an immigrant woman defying the authority of a border patrol. In most cases immigrants are scared especially at the sound of "la migra" which is a slag word for immigration in Spanish. In addition, when the speaker was the border patrol officer he made himself sound bad by stating the things he could do to the woman. • 17. Personal Identity In My Life I've lived my life according to the saying "why fit in when you were born to stand out;" therefore, I've made a point to differentiate myself from my peers and my family. In my community, I belonged to the 3.65% of people who identify as part of the Other category in my home town. As a white girl in a Hispanic town, I was an outlier from the rich Hispanic Culture. This defined my life from a young age and directed me to learn to thrive while standing out. At home, I was raised in a household where at the end of the day we would congregate around the TV to watch the latest football game. Although I adore spending time with my family, I would rather read than breathe; my family does not relate to that. These circumstances, albeit sometimes daunting due to their secluding side effects, have allowed me to embrace being unique and to capitalize on my individuality to achieve my goals, in a world where I may have otherwise gone unnoticed. I was born and raised in Laredo, Texas, a medium sized town located just north of the Mexican Border. 96% of the residents identify as Hispanic, which leaves me in the 4% Other category. I was born and raised in Laredo most of my life, however when I was four my family and I moved to Miami, Florida, due to my dad's job as a border patrol agent. A mix of missing home and a fear of hurricanes caused us to pack our bags and relocate back to Laredo in 2007. Even though I was born there, the three year separation and the fact that I didn't ... The Border Patrol State Essay The Border Patrol State In "The Border Patrol State" Leslie Silko makes accusations of the border patrol's mistreatment of American citizens of Mexican decent, making the argument with almost evidence. Silko, a critically acclaimed poet, sees the border patrol as a governmental assembly addicted to interrogation, torture, and the murder of those they see fit. Leslie Silko certainly makes accusations that some could argue far exceed the boundaries of journalism integrity, and fail to deliver with evidence to back them up. She tells a story of her and her companion Gus being treated as illegal immigrants although they present Arizona identification. They are pushed around and even have the dog unleashed on them. She goes onto compare the treatment of Mexican–Americans by the United States Border Patrol to, "Argentina's "dirty war" in the late 1970's"(124). From here it is onto how well the border patrol discriminates, and how they will do their best to find any reason to bring the brown man down. Silko explains the way in which people are detained. She actually reaches out to the reader and tells him or her personally how they could identify themselves being detained. She makes claims throughout this explanation of how the detainee is treated unjustly, like when she states, "They make it clear that if you force them to obtain a search warrant for the car, they will make you submit to a strip search as well"(125). Silko starts to bring some half–way evidence into the picture by talking about the more high profile cases of the abuse of the border patrol's power. She gives us more facts as we reach the middle of the reading. Eighty percent of the respondents from a survey done by the University of Arizona in South Tucson identified that one in every five had been detained, mistreated, or questioned by INS agents in the past two years. "Manifest Destiny...–"lock the door" is what it means now," introduces an idea Silko finds to be just(126). The solution Silko says is no border. "Even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. The United States Border Patrol The United States Border Patrol has a mission and duty to protect our borders through regulating laws and preventing illegal terrorists, drugs, and weapons from entering the United States. This has been a clear goal ever since laws have been passed to help secure our borders back in 1924. The need for Border Patrol and the demand for tighter security plans have been increasing due to terrorist attacks on American soil, the presence of radical groups, and a high rate of crime in the United States. The big idea here is that as crime continues to develop so will our border securities. I would like to primarily focus on the current role of the Border Patrol versus what it might have been in years past. Many tragedies have occurred in recent times more than what was experienced years ago. The United States has suffered throughout the year 2000 and continues to suffer from severe threats to the nation. It only makes sense to make changes and tighten our borders in order to help prevent the ongoing crimes. If the Border Patrol does this than the individuals living in this nation will live in a better and much safer environment. Along with their current role, the research on the Border Patrol's changes that either have hindered their work or made them more effective will be looked into as well. The role of the Border Patrol has significantly changed from the past when we look at it today. In the past, Border Patrol has lacked in technology. A lack of technology hinders the agents ... In this cartoon the U.S. border patrol is patrolling the border and drawn to a yellow sign that reads, "CAUTION," and has a silhouette of a family running. Underneath that is another yellow sign, but this one reads, "OUTSOURCING," and features robbers fleeing. The border control is looking at the signs puzzled. Through this drawing, Bennett asked his audience, "Do we really want to vote for a man who worries more about families coming to the U.S. to better their lives? Or people in the U.S. taking our profits and business to other countries?" As I said earlier, questioning some of Trump's motives is questioning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He candidly writes about his experiences, using imagery to describe the physical landscape of New Mexico in a way that mirrors his own emotional landscape and answers the question that he grapples with most. Cantu writes, "There are days when I feel I am becoming good at what I do. And then I wonder, what does it mean to be good at this? I wonder sometimes how I might explain certain things..." (7). Yet, by saying he "can make sense of what the means later," it is clear that he still struggles to acknowledge what being good at his job implies about his character, and he doesn't want to add to the weighted conscience that he already carries. Mirroring this admission is a description Cantu gives of a lava field, where he describes it as, "...wet under the afternoon sun, rocks postmarked from a time when the earth melted and simmered between erupting volcanoes, a molten crust cracking and shifting as it cooled" (14). There are some important parallels to note between these two passages. Cantu describes the lava field as being "postmarked" by prior events, just as prior events and experiences have marked him. He acknowledges that he is "getting used to" his job and, "getting good at it," insinuating that he is cooling and adjusting to life as a border patrol agent. However, the images of the "molten crust cracking and shifting" point back to Cantu's conscience and his unsettled feelings about what it means to do his job well. The organization that manages the Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, has become the largest federal law enforcement agency in the nation, and with that distinction comes some scrutiny. Two articles were written, the first by The New York Times, the other by the Associated Press, that highlighted some disturbing trends within the agency. The number of Border Patrol agents more than doubled between 2004 and 2011, when they grew to over 20,000 employees, and that number continued to rise, reaching over 21,000 today. "Since...September 11, 2001, the focus of the Border Patrol has changed to detection, apprehension and/or deterrence of terrorists or terrorist weapons, " but as the agency uses that motto to grow its, it has become increasingly clear that they are more concerned with keeping certain people out than keeping the border safe. "Increase in suicides among Border Patrol agents causes alarm," by the Associated Press' Paul J. Weber addresses the disturbing trend of suicides among Border Patrol agents. Between February 2008 and August 2010, 15 Border Patrol agents had taken their own lives. There had not been a single suicide in the agency for four years prior to that point. To further illustrate the significance of that trend: the national rate of suicide at the time was 12 for every 100,000 people. The Border Patrol's rate was at 30 per 100,000. Sandra Cisneros uses smaller main ideas and symbols of home, love, roots, and womanhood in order to further elucidate the greater theme of identity. One of the symbols and smaller main ideas that the characters explore is the meaning of home. Ceyala's family struggles to find their place, and identity. They question what or where is home, whether it is family, the US, or Mexico. Cisneros uses the idea of home through many characters. In the last part of this book, Cisneros uses Inocencio, Ceyala's father, and the conflict of when the border patrol come and talk to him. Much of media has covered the government's plans for a more strict immigration policy to secure the southern border, including the waves of I.C.E. raids in several major cities throughout the country. Moreso, the Trump administration is making changes to increase the pool of immigrants to be deported by giving immigration agents the objective to go after criminals, as well as any undocumented person the agent believes has committed a chargeable offense (Reyes, 2017). Such rhetoric is interesting, especially in this case, because of the likelihood of once again relying on racial profiling for such a job. Like the themes in Grgoire Chamayou's Manhunts: A Philosophical History, this plan for eliminating undocumented immigrants as fast as possible with expedited removals dehumanizes these people to just being an excess group that can be tossed to the side because they are not citizens of our nation. These agents are actively seeking the undocumented and not hesitating to arrest and detain, even expediting the process in order to avoid wasting time with court hearings. Also an unsettling thought, if foul play were to happen in these raids, the question of who would be held responsible? For example, the shooting of an unarmed Mexican national in 2010 by a U.S. border patrol agent (De Vogue, 2017). Years have passed since the incident and it is still being debated in the U.S. Supreme Court today. A disturbing thought to think that more questionable actions by agents could arise from this mandate to increase the number of deportations and the known tendencies to rely on racial profiling for such a plan. However many people have acknowledged this violation of human rights and have protested this evil caricature that has been painted by the new administration with their recent actions. Many people, including President Trump, have pinpointed Mexico as a source of many of the drugs consumed in the US. President Trump voiced his views in the speech in 2015 as he announced his Presidential bid: "They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime." Mr. Trump is right about one thing: Mexicans are smuggling drugs into the US. According to a report released by US Customs and Border Protection in 2015, 99.8% of methamphetamine and 99.9% of marijuana captured by the organization were at the border shared with Mexico. Even though it is not possible to know exactly how much of the drugs consumed in the US are imported from Mexico, it is reasonable to deduce from the Customs and Border Protection figures that the percentage of drugs from Mexico consumed in the US is a high percentage. Even though this is a major problem in our country today, drugs imported from Mexico and consumed in America is a problem the the Mexican and American governments have been trying to solve for half a century. Since the 1960s, the Mexican and American government have imposed ever–increasingly stringent laws on the drug. However, this approach certainly hasn't decreased the use of drugs in America, but why? I believe that the laws and policies put into action by the US and Mexico have been largely ineffective because the institutions that put these laws into effect cannot enforce them, due to lack of funding, corruption in all levels of government and law enforcement, and the lack of knowledge on the drug trade. One of the first investigations into the drug trade, Operation Intercept, occurred in 1969. The report, published by the Secretary of the Treasury, David Kennedy, and the Attorney General, John Mitchell, outlines and exposes many problems in the effort to curb the flourishing trade of drugs from Mexico to America. • 49. Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil's Highway Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of "desolation" in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story to illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes this through his usage of the word. The word "desolation" is defined as a state of complete emptiness or destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration shifts to life. Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance of a work to go beyond its meaning. "The significance of that meaning is what may be called allegory."(Bloomfield, 1972) Desolation's meaning spans much more than its definition in The Devils Highway, A True Story. It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition. Desolation and Cosmos define Desolation stating, "Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a complex pattern." (Geyer, 1999) The allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the Devils Highway. In the author's note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: "But no story about death and the Devil's Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating glory." (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about death could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow. Urrea makes this well–known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the two share. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. If You Cross The River You Are A Criminal A. Social inequality / pg 79: a social condition in which privileges and obligations are given to some but denied to others. A criminal is defined as a person who commits a crime. What happens when those crimes are against humanity? How do we as Americans justify some of our laws, when they are morally wrong? Our ancestors invaded, conquered, and eventually industrialized lands. Settlers initial goals were to find better lives and opportunities. A few centuries later, we are denying immigrants the same rights to seek out better lives and opportunities. Border patrol stated at the beginning of of the film, "If you cross the river you are a criminal." In my opinion, it is criminal that we waste money on the deporting system versus helping to civilize the southern countries. In The Harvest, immigrants in the U.S faced the risks of making incomes like $64/week and not getting paid. The film Wetbacks showed the perspective of the people South of the U.S borders. Families in the Latin America 's average up to $70/month. Two dollars a day won 't buy one person a day food, let alone a family. Almost everything is done by hand; breaking rocks, transporting water from the river, washing/drying clothes, and producing/catching little food. I feel we should either open or extend our borders. Some of our border laws need to be revised or eradicated. We hand money to people who use the welfare system as a career. Why not employ immigrants for jobs Americans will never do? Immigrants ... • 55. United States Border Patrol After analyzing many topics I am more anti–immigration than pro. My policy to stop immigration is to hire more agents to enforce immigration laws at the border. Currently the US has a minimal amount of agents at the border. With minimal amounts, the border patrol is missing huge amounts of illegal immigrants which jeopardizes the US security. Increasing our agents at the border would help reduce the drastic number of illegal immigrants entering the United States each year. With less illegal immigrants the US will be able to do more thurow screenings of crime or terrorism with the new numbers of hired agents. With my policy I will enforce a skills screening process too. This will evaluate immigrants on how they can help the United States and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With restrictions on US benefits for illegal immigrants enforcing the ballot will force illegal immigrants to leave, come back, and apply for citizenship because they will not receive the benefits they need. I believe this is a harsh policy but is needed because the expenses to support these services for everyone is costly. Second, I believe The Minuteman Project would be a helpful asset to the border patrol. With the proper training and education this organization could be successful in aiding the enforcement of immigration. However, having the military help the border patrol is a bad idea because of their strong relationship with weapons. I believe that if we bring the military to the border it will cause more harm than good. The military will create fear and violence at the border which could cause many conflicts if enforcement is not done properly. My view on Amendment 14 is indifferent. I believe that if your parent is not a documented citizen in the US you should not be able to become a US citizen even if you are born in the country. However, if your parent is a citizen and they have a child the child will be able to continue to live in the US. This covers the conflict with "Anchor Babies" too. • 57. The U.S. Border Patrol In 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation. Although changes have affected nearly every aspect of its operations from its earliest days, the values; professionalism, honor, integrity, respect for human life, and a shared effort, helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the same today. In 1915, Congress approved a separate group of Mounted Guards, often called Mounted Inspectors. Most rode on horseback, but a few operated cars and even boats. But what I was more worried about mama and all of my brothers and sisters. Were they going to get found by the border patrol? Were we going to get separated? These were all the things I thought about when we went down the road in the white van that looked like it had been treated with no care to get Robert at Santa Maria High School. "You illegals are always causing so much trouble, why do you even come here? Seems like too much trouble to me." In my head I was furious! "No" Roberto replied. "He would have shouted at us." We slowly made our way around the store on our hands and knees to find a place to hide. We found some barrels to hide behind. "Come on Panchito, help me move this barrel" Roberto said with a worried tone. We started to move a barrel, it was very heavy so we decided to climb over them. About 30 seconds after we hopped over the border patrol man came over with a dolly and lifted the barrel with another man helping him. Me and Roberto had to get behind one barrel so he would not see us. My heart started to race. Would he see us? To my relief he did not. We were inside a small van all squished and laid flat so that border patrol won't see us. I tried not to breathe due to the tension and adrenaline I was feeling at the moment. However, I felt my heart pumping so rapidly and so loud, if I were at a concert right now, my heart would have been louder than the music and the people combined. Suddenly, we were dumped out in a vast field filled with tall dry grass and only a couple of trees. Immediately, we started traveling by foot at around 12 in the morning, looking towards the future and forgetting about the past. Since we are traveling through a tall grassy area, it would be easy to camouflage or hide in between the grass. "We are now in American Territory," stated El Coyote, but that didn't seem to soothe anyone since we knew we knew we were in even more risks. After about 30 minutes of walking, everyone was exhausted, even El Coyote, since most of the trail had been constantly up and down, and there was still no sign of a small Pueblo or town or anything. All of a sudden we spotted a light ahead, and as soon as our hopes were started to go up, they quickly plunged to the floor because they were not street lights as we thought; it was the border patrol! As we started to make a run towards some mountain up above, things got worse since we were being followed by a helicopter now, flashing its light directly at us. Government spending will approach nearly four trillion dollars in two thousand eleven, which means that qualified public servants must be in place to oversee the efficient implementation of government policies. (Andrews, 2011) "Public administrator" is a term which encompasses a wide range of possible job titles; public administrator's range from parole officers to policy analysts, and each works day to day to help promote the welfare of society through government spending. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this, Border Patrol agents often have to arrest and deport people who they are quite sympathetic towards. Until the Mexican government straightens out the country, the situation is destined to repeat itself many times over with no easy answers. Another public administrator who faces conflicting ethical obligations on a daily basis is those who run the education systems. These school administrators are confronted with many issues, none more serious than the budget. With state governments across the nation facing deficits and decreased tax revenue, inevitably school programs will see their budgets cut. A school administrator is often forced to choose which programs will see the chopping block. They have to decide just how valuable extracurricular activities are, and which ones deserve to continue to receive the limited funding available. An administrator might have to choose between hiring a new teacher to improve the teacher to student ratio, or cutting the soccer teams budget for that year. Each choice has its benefits as well as drawbacks, and a school administrator must fully consider the merits of any decision. With the economy still struggling, it is clear that qualified school administrators will have to make difficult choices many times in upcoming years. The struggling economy does not merely ... It wouldn't matter, it's better for the 'we' of the nation to disallow entry. Would that wife trying to join her husband do any harm? I used to own a farm but when the temperature began to rise and the soil was less fertile, I had to put an end to it because I was unable to plant or harvest any crops. In the past, this had been my main source of income but as the time went by, I could not sustain this lifestyle anymore. Furthermore, I couldn't supply my family of 4 with the items they needed to be alive. After having a long talk with my wife, Emilia, I decided to begin to consider many different options. We searched all of the village and even in nearby towns trying to find a place that would hire me. We didn't find anything but did see a flyer on a pole that was interesting. It said, "Go to America. You'll get hired for sure." Me and my wife were overjoyed when we saw this. We immediately began to plan our move up North. We travelled the four hour hike from the town back to our village, the whole way talking about how we would get there and what we planned to do with our lives. We never said it, but we were all hoping that the words on the flyer were true because it was our last hope. • 73. Mexican Immigrants Undocumented immigrants who come to America have always been stigmatized, especially Mexican immigrants. The novel "Into The Beautiful North" by Luis Alberto Urrea highlights many of the issues faced by undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States. The main characters in the book illegally cross the border from Mexico into America and go on a journey to better the lives of everyone in their village back home. Throughout the story, they witness and experience issues that Mexican immigrants face such as Border Patrol abuse, discrimination, language barriers, and labor hardships. Though the story is fictional, it illustrates real life problems that need to be addressed. There are efforts to solve these issues, but they lack support needed to really make significant change in a timely manner. There are also various potential solutions, some more obvious than others, but they simply have not been invested in due to reasons such as lack of supporters or funding. Popular opinion and modern media portray undocumented Mexican immigrants are portrayed as unwanted invaders who are here to ruin the country, but this is simply not true. They are human just like Americans and they want to better the lives of themselves and their families. People need to recognize everything that they go through just so they can live in this country. • 75. Pros And Cons Of The Border Wall Essay In the past few years, there has been a recent push for a border wall to protect the United States from the increase in immigration and drug trafficking. Although the border wall aids in reducing problems in our country, it is affecting the economy of the country and the health of our environment, therefore the border wall is not the best solution. Starting in 2006, the United States started to develop the wall along parts of the frontier between U.S. and Mexico. There was 670 miles of the wall authorized to be assembled, and there were many objections to it being built. Besides the oppositions, from 2006 to 2009 there was already more than 100 miles of the wall constructed (Gilman 258). Congress passed the "Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act" in 1996. The act gave power to the government to create walls or barriers along the border, and it allowed it to seize land from people if it is imperative in protecting the borderline of the country (Gilman 259). In 2006, the "Secure Fence Act" was passed that instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a fence stretching from 5 different areas of the border. In 2007, there was 70 miles of the wall built in the Arizona and Mexico frontier. Since this occurrence, the government then shifted its surveillance to the border along Texas and Mexico in 2007, and started suggestions to assemble more than 100 miles of the border wall by 2008 (Gilman 260). The 5th circuit of appeals ruled in favor of the government and now the case is in the hands of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard the oral arguments of both sides on February 21st, 2017. Hernandez v. Mesa can be traced to the 5th Circuit of Appeals using three articles. The first article, "Mexican politicians urge Border Patrol agent 's extradition for trial in shooting," was completed June 10th, 2010 and was featured on Cleveland.com. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second issue is whether Mesa violated the Fourth Amendment rights of Hernandez by killing him and whether Hernandez would have qualified for those rights. The 5th Circuit of Appeals contains mostly conservative justices with over two–thirds of them appointed by Republican Presidents (Wray, 2014). When considering this case, the 5th Circuit of Appeals ruled that Mesa had "qualified immunity and could not be sued by the teen's family" (Lipkin, 2015). The court also ruled that Hernandez did not have a voluntary connection to the United States which would grant him the protections of the Fourth and Fifth Amendment (Barajas, 2015). Something interesting about this case is that it was originally ruled in Hernandez's favor the first time it reached the 5th Circuit by a panel of three judges. However, the entire 5th Circuit eventually ruled against that decision to find in favor of the government. This case was appealed to the Supreme Court and accepted on October 11th, 2016. Although the 5th Circuit of Appeals ruled against Hernandez, the Supreme Court appears split. As a 4–4 court, Justice Kennedy has been the deciding vote in many cases.
