3. It is celebrated internationally on the night of October 31,
especially in the Anglo-sphere, such as Canada, the United
States, Ireland or the United Kingdom, and, to a lesser
extent, in other places like Spain and Latin America.
4. This evening vigil of the day before the feast of All Saints,
in the Anglo-Saxon culture it was translated into English
as: "All Hallow's Even" (All Saints Vigil)
11. Irish immigrants
in the United States
spread the custom
of carving the
jack-o'-lantern
(giant hollow
pumpkin with
a candle inside),
inspired by the
legend of
«Jack the Stinger».
12. Originally the trick or treating was a
popular legend of Celtic origin according
to which not only the spirits of the
deceased were free to roam the Earth on
Halloween night, but all kinds of entities
from all the spiritual realms. Among them
was a terribly malevolent one who
wandered through towns and villages,
going from house to house asking
precisely "trick or treating."
-The best thing was to make a deal,
regardless of the cost that it had, because
if you did not agree with this spirit (which
would receive the name of jack-o'-lantern,
with which the traditional Halloween
pumpkins are known), he would use his
powers to do a "trick", consisting of
cursing the house and its inhabitants,
giving them all kinds of misfortunes,
such as making the family sick, killing livestock
with pests or even burning the house itself.
As protection came the idea of creating
horrendous shapes in the pumpkins, in order
to avoid encountering said spectrum.
13. nuégados (en Albacete),
roscos (en la provincia de Cuenca),
tostones (en Ciudad Real),
chocolate con churros,
sopas canas,
natillas
puches (en Getafe),
panellets
los huesos de santo
los buñuelos de viento
typical sweets or
desserts on these dates
14. A custom that persists
today in Ireland is the
preparation or purchase
of a fruit cake, in which
a simple ring, coin and
other charms are placed
before baking. It is said
that those who find a ring
will find their true love
the following year.
This tradition is similar
to the roscón de Reyes
on the feast of the
Epiphany in Spain
15. Pagan Origin
of Halloween
-the Samhain festivals of
the Celtic Druids were very
possibly celebrated between
November 5 and 7 (in the
middle of the summer
equinox and the winter
solstice) with a series of
festivities that lasted a week,
ending with the feast
of "the dead“ and with this
the Celtic new year began.
16. Samhain, derives from Old Irish and means "end of summer", as a result of the
combination of the Old Gaelic words Samh (summer) and Fuin (end), and was
celebrated from October 31 to November 1 in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
17. The ancient Celts believed
that the line connecting this
world to the Otherworld was
narrowed with the arrival
of the Samhain, allowing
spirits (both benevolent and
malevolent) to pass through.
Family ancestors were
invited and honored while
harmful spirits were driven
away. It is believed that the
use of costumes and masks
is due to the need to
drive away evil spirits.
The purpose was to adopt the
appearance of an evil spirit
to avoid being harmed.
18. Possibly comes from the Proto-Celtic samoni (assembly or gathering). - for the ancient
Celts this date coincided with the end of the summer half of the year and the beginning
of the winter half, The word samoni meant assembly, - Samhain referred to an assembly
of the living with the dead, precisely what the Celts believed to occur on this date.
19. the place of the dead was a realm of perfect
happiness in which there was no hunger or pain.
20. It is said that the "spirits" of
the dead would come on that
date to visit their former homes
21. The Celts celebrated this festival with rites in which the Druid priests,
serving as "mediums", communicated with their ancestors,
hoping to be guided in this life towards the immortal.
22. At the same time of year, the british celts held a related festival called
Calan Gaeaf in Wales, Kalan Gwav in Cornwall and Kalan Goañv in
Breizh (Bretagne, N France); a name that means "first winter day".
24. Halloween coincides with the annual apple
harvest season, caramel apples and sweet
apples are common during the holidays.
25. Others say they come from the Roman
festival of the dead called Parentalia,
26. When the Roman occupied the Celtic dominions, they assimilated the festival,
although a festival known as the "harvest festival" was already celebrated
in the last days of October and the beginning of November, in honor of
Pomona (goddess of fruit trees). Both traditions were mixed.
28. Commemorations of all the saints and martyrs were celebrated
by various churches on different dates, mainly in the spring.
29. In the early days Christians used to solemnize the anniversary of the death of
a martyr for Christ on the spot of martyrdom. In the 4th century, neighboring
dioceses began to exchange feasts, transfer relics, distribute them, and unite
in a common feast, as demonstrated in the invitation of Saint Basil
of Caesarea (397) to the bishops of the Pontus province.
30. Groups of martyrs often died on the same day, which naturally led to a common
celebration. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great
that a separate day could not be assigned to each one. But the Church, feeling that
every martyr should be venerated, marked a common day for all. The first sign
of this goes back to Antioch on the Sunday before Pentecost.
31. In 609, Pope Boniface IV rededicated the Pantheon in Rome to
"Saint Mary and all the martyrs" on May 13, taking advantage of
the feast of Lemuralia (an ancient Roman festival of the dead).
32. Pope Boniface IV (+615) transformed a Roman
temple dedicated to all the gods (pantheon) into
a Christian temple dedicating it to "All Saints",
to all those who had gone before us in faith.
33. The feast of All Saints,
at its present date in the
Western Church, dates
back to the founding by
Pope Gregory III
(731–741) of an oratory
in Saint Peter for the
relics of "the holy
apostles and of all the
saints, Martyrs and
confessors ».
In 835, the “All Saints”
was officially changed
from May 13 to
November 1, the same
date as Samhain,
at the behest of
Pope Gregory IV
34. This liturgical solemnity, the Church encompassed all the saints. The rest
of the liturgical year we are offered the memories of different and well-known
saints, but the feast of November 1 is dedicated to the anonymous ones.
36. "Our saints do not need our honors
and they gain nothing from our worship.
For my part, I confess that, when I think
of the saints, I feel burning desire to
be with them"- Saint Bernard
37. The biographies of the saints present men and women who were docile to divine designs, and
have at times faced indescribable trials and sufferings, persecutions and even martyrdom.
MARTYRS
39. They have persevered in their dedication, "they have passed through
the great tribulation and have washed and whitened their garments
with the blood of the Lamb." (Ap 7, 14). Their names are written
in the book of life (cf. Ap 20, 12); his eternal abode is Paradise.
40. "Blessed
the poor in spirit,
those who cry,
the meek,
those who hunger
and thirst for justice,
the merciful,
the pure in heart,
the makers of peace,
those persecuted for
the sake of justice "
(cf. Mt 5, 3-10).
41. Communion
with the saints.
"We do not venerate the
memory of those in heaven
only as our models, but,
above all, so that the union
of the whole Church in the
Spirit is reinforced by the
practice of fraternal love.,
The union of the Christians
who are still on the way
brings us closer to Christ.
So also communion with
the saints unites us to
Christ. He is the head and
all grace and life for the
People of God flows from
Him”.: CCC 957.
42. We adore Christ because
He is the son of God.
As for the martyrs, we
love them as disciples
and imitators of the Lord,
and this is right and just,
because of their
incomparable devotion
to their king and master.
May we too be their
companions and
fellow disciples.
[Saint Polycarp
of Smyrna]
43. The saints are our intercessors before God and
they also motivate us to long for holiness, so that
one day we may participate in this glory of God,
which should be the ultimate goal of our life.
44. CCC 956. - The Intercession of the Saints. - "Because those in heaven are more
intimately united with Christ, they consolidate the whole Church more firmly
in holiness ... they do not cease to intercede for us before the Father.
The only Mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus, by the merits
of the saints acquired on earth ... helps us a lot in our weakness ":
45. “Do not cry, I will be more useful to you after my death and I will help
you more effectively than during my life”. [Santo Domingo de Guzman]
46. “I will spend my heaven doing good on earth”.
[Saint Therese of the Child Jesus]
48. The three states of the Church.
"Until the Lord comes in his
splendor with all his angels and,
after death has been destroyed,
He has subdued everything,
CIC 954 - His disciples,
1 - some pilgrim on earth;
2 - others, already deceased,
purify themselves;
3 - while others are glorified,
contemplating "clearly God
Himself, one and three, as it is»":
49. All of us, although in different degrees and
ways, share in the same love for God and
neighbor and sing the same hymn of praise
to our God. Indeed, all who belong to Christ,
who have his Spirit, they form the same Church
and are united to each other in Him. [LG 49]
50. "As all
believers form
a single body,
the good of
some is
communicated
to the others...
It is therefore
necessary to
believe that
there is a
communion of
goods in the
Church. CIC 947
51. But the most
important
member is
Christ, since He
is the head ...
Thus, the good
of Christ is
communicated
to all members,
and this
communication
is made by the
sacraments of
the church".
52. "As this
Church is
governed
by one
and the
same
Spirit, all
the goods
that she
has
received
necessarily
form a
common
fund.“
53. Communion of faith,
The faith of the faithful is the faith
of the Church, received from the
apostles. It is a treasure of life, that
is enriched, when it is shared.
56. …above all the Eucharist, because it
brings this communion to its culmination
57. The communion of charisms: In the communion of the Church, the Holy Spirit
"distributes special graces among the faithful" for the edification of the Church. –
"to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for common benefit" (1 Cor 12,7)
58. CCC 952. - "They had everything in common" (Acts 4,32): "Everything that
the true Christian possesses must be considered as a common good with
others and must be willing and diligent to help the needy and misery
of their neighbor ". The Christian is a steward of the Lord's goods
59. CCC 953. - The communion of charity: - In the "communion
of saints", "none of us lives for ourselves, just as no one
dies for ourselves" (Rm 14,7). "If one member suffers, all
the others suffer with it. If one member is honored, all the
others share in its joy. Now you are the Body of Christ,
and its members each for his part" (1 Cor. 12,26-27).
60. "Charity does not seek its interest" (1 Cor 13,5) - The least of
our acts done with charity affects the benefit of all, in this
solidarity between all men, living or dead, which is founded
in the communion of saints. All sin harms this communion
62. The Feast of All Saints is an invitation to "experience the joy
of those who have placed Christ at the center of their lives"
63. "The saint is one who is so fascinated by the beauty of God and by his perfect truth that they
will progressively transform him. For this beauty and truth he is willing to renounce
everything, including himself. The love of God is enough for him. , that experiences and
transmits in the humble and disinterested service of the neighbor ". - Pope Benedict XVI
I also want
to be a saint
64. "A saint is not an angel, he is a man of flesh and
blood, who knows how to get up and walk again.
The saint does not forget the cry of his brother,
nor does he think that it is better to climb an altar.
Holy is he who lives his faith with joy and fights
every day because he lives to love. "- C. Gabaraín
65. "Now we are children of God, but it has not yet been
revealed how we will be in the end. And we already
know that, when he appears, we will be alike. him,
because we will see him as he is. "(1 John 3,2)
