Working On A Group Is Not An Easy Thing Working
When working on a group you have to be a listener and a leader at the same time, you have to make
sure you help your group. Being in a group is not an easy thing working with people can be
challenging specially when they work at a different rhythm or even a different way, I've had
different experiences working in groups but personally I can agree that this group was a perfect fit
for me, at the beginning it was very difficult due to the fact that several of our classmates withdraw
the class and did not inform us before they did, this made us change our approach but at the end we
ended up working it out and making it work. The work we did as a group was easy we decided to
meet at the speech lab and brainstorm the best way of presenting our subject; we decided on assign
each of the group members their task and what was going to be the role they would be playing in the
group, the order they would present and with was the subject they were going to elaborate in. I was
in charge of explaining what is a nonverbal message and how important it is, so I made sure of
researching everything I could not only by reading the chapter, but also by doing some outside
research witch gave me a lot of information and understanding of this subject.
After we all had the area we would concentrate in we decided to meet up again and practice what we
had so far and star with the power point and decide on another visual aid, we decided on doing a clip
on the series lie to me but at the end we could

What Are Professional Writing?
1. What is professional writing?
Answer: Professional writing is the composition of informative materials designed for those who
work in a professional capacity. This career also involves creating explanatory documents and
articles, as well as sales materials for use in technical fields. Producing documentation and
educational materials for use in the medical field is another activity within professional writing.
Both general news coverage and business news reporting are also considered to be within this sector.
Methods of writing depend heavily upon the type of writing the end–user requires.
The field of professional writing spans many fields, and as a result, there is a wide variety of
communication materials produced for various audiences. Professional writing is defined largely by
the training that prepares a person for this field. Those composing sales materials are usually
expected to have familiarity with the products or services that will be distributed to clients.
There are legal ramifications to composing and distributing written materials, or composing product
instruction guides or sales materials. Copyright infringement and liability issues are two major ones.
As a result, the training of a professional writer or journalist usually prepares him or her to
undertake writing assignments while not running afoul of these issues. Ethics are also a concern,
particularly in news reporting.
Those who pursue a professional writing career are commonly trained to avoid

Dramatic Tension in Miller's All My Sons Essay
Dramatic Tension in Miller's All My Sons
This extract begins with Chris and Ann deciding how they're going to break the news to the Kellers.
They start with Joe Keller, and he somewhat approves. The scene is lighthearted until Keller finds
out the George is on the phone for Ann from Columbia. This drives is suspicions and gets him very
protective. He begins to try and hint to Chris that Ann is here to try and convict him of the death of
Larry. Chris then gets very angry with him, and Joe compensates by bringing out his extreme love
and care for the success of his family. The tension of the scene gradually builds up until this part,
where Joe Keller abruptly gets very content and jokes about how ... Show more content on

The audience can sense this with the direct tone in Chris' speech to his father.
Miller very effectively uses contrast between the tension in a scene with the skillful use of light
hearted preludes or interludes. The contrast means the dramatic tension has increased. This is
usually done with characters like Frank or Sue. This helps the audience distinguish the tension
better. In this extract, Miller uses Keller's overriding affection and graduated self confidence at the
end of the extract to bring down the tension. Keller becomes very witty and cheerful: "There's gonna
be a wedding, kid, like there never was scene! Champagne, tuxedos–!" The tension is very abruptly
brought down, as it directly follows Chris and Keller's argument. The contrast in tension creates a
morbid curiosity in the audience, where they can no longer predict what is to come, which makes
the play even better. This increases the rate of anticipation.
The most obvious feature of drama is perhaps the dialogue. Miller uses the skill of using offensive
speech to bring about the tension. He deliberately causes conflict between two characters to increase
the tension. More over, Miller uses stage directions as a dramatic device to bring about the tension
in a scene. Keller makes a 'distracted' entrance onto

My Communication Skills Of My Life And How They Have Been...
Being able to communicate is a great skill that one can practice every day of our lives. There are
several ways or types of communication skills I have learned in this course such as vocally, written,
visually, or non–verbally. In this assignment, I am going to write about my communication skills in
three periods of my life and how they have been developed. First, I would like to talk about how I
was when I was a little. When I was about five or six years' old, I was spoiled between my family
just like most of the other kids. However, outside my house I can describe myself as a shy and quiet
girl that I sometimes in school I have been bullied by other students. When I was five years old my
dad enrolled me and my half–brother who is as my age in a kindergarten school. I was always with
my brother and I felt safe around him, but when we become at the seventh age, my dad couldn't
have enrolled us in the same school because he was told that I was born at the last days of
November and they would accept me in the school with the next generation. Therefore, my dad
decided that I am going to a private school so that I can be with my generation.
At the first day of school I was afraid to be alone without having my brother around me. I just hated
that school because I was just by myself, and my classmates were not nice to me at all. The boys and
some girls were very mean and like to be bullying for example, they always take my stuff and
refused to return them back when I ask them to,

Credibility Was A Strength For Me
1.) Credibility was a strength for me. The books illustrates that "to present with professional
excellence, you must demonstrate credibility and help your audience believe you and the
information or argument you are presenting"(250). I felt I did a good job in the way I explained my
experience in the music industry and how I've been successful. I didn't just rush into my main points
and I allowed the audience to believe what I am saying is credible. Secondly, the design an
informative speech I felt was another strength of mine. The book says "try to incorporate a variety of
supporting material such as examples, statistics, and quotes" (253). The way I used the quote from
Troy Carter I feel gained attention because when I mentioned he was Lady ... Show more content on

The book explains, "a well–designed conclusion can elevate a presentation from average to
excellent, whereas a poor conclusion can make an otherwise excellent presentation fall flat" (279) .
This is something I need to work on because I feel I did great explaining my main points but from
watching the video and putting myself in the perspective of the audience I realized my ending was
very weak. I was to focused on memorizing the main points and details that I forgot about my
conclusion. The books makes great points that in order to allow the audience to know when a
conclusion is coming phrases like "In conclusion", "In summary", "As I close", or "I would like to
end with" can all be good transition phrases. One more weakness I would say was the lack of
research to support my ideas. In regards to how to gather a speech the book says "the research you
need in order to develop and support your presentation can and should come from a variety of
sources. Depending on the topic, you must use internal sources, external sources, or a combination
of two" (272) From watching the video I felt I used to many internal sources and not enough
external sources. I was disappointed because I had many sources at hand but I didn't mention them
as much as I would have liked because I was so worried about forgetting my body of the speech. In
order to improve this I will have a sheet in front of me with the sources as a guide. I think I would
have been able to remember to mention the sources if I had a reminder in front of

The individual completed the review and Mr. Nunez shared the information with Lennon. The
information contained several graphs on PowerPoint slides that were difficult to understand and
appeared to contain inaccuracies. Mr. Nunez discussed his concerns over the information with
Lennon and suggested revising the graphs and adding additional PowerPoint slides that he believed
would be helpful in clarifying the data. While Lennon also found the graphs a bit difficult to
understand she directed Mr. Nunez not to revise the graphs and to add any additional slides as an
appendix to the presentation.
Despite Mr. Nunez continuing concerns over presenting the graphs in question he complied with
Ms. Lennon's directive. Prior to his presentation with the Vice President, Mr. Nunez did a dry run of
the presentation with Lennon, and she stated he had done a "good job". During the presentation, the
Vice President raised concerns over the very graphs in question and expressed discomfort with the
presentation. While Mr. Nunez took ownership of the presentation, Lennon failed to convey to the
Vice President that she had approved the presentation and directed Mr. Nunez, despite his concerns,
to deliver the presentation. See Exhibit C

My Personal Online Portfolio
Presenting on my personal online portfolio was a great experience since not many presentations are
individual–based. With many assignments leading up to one major task, students were challenged
throughout the semester to eventually present themselves to a fictitious group of employers.
Throughout this short essay, I will reflect on the creation of the professional online portfolio as well
as experiencing the actual presentation. Creating the POP Not only did I enjoy the creation of the
POP, it helped me think back in my past and explore areas I had forgotten about. It's somewhat like
an interview; you must recollect memories of times you were successful at work and in academics.
With Wix, the website builder, I was able to design the site how I wanted it to look. I remember
creating a Wix website about five years ago and the advancement of the online software is
incredible. Back then, it was very lame and very bland. In utilizing the cloud–based software today,
I was given full creativity and could express myself creatively. My favorite part of my POP are the
sections in which you can scroll from slide to slide. Instead of crowding my website with boxes and
forcing the reader's eyes to shoot everywhere, I designed my interests and academic projects areas
into a single box with a sliding queue. Of course, the interests and academic projects are in different
boxes and sections, but they are set up the

PowerPoint: An Efficient Tool Essay
PowerPoint is probably the most popular digital aid tool for presentations. It was created by the
giant software developer Microsoft and presented to the world for the very first time in 2000
according to Microsoft's web page. On the article "PowerPoint: Killer App?" the author, Ruth
Marcus, criticizes this application explaining the effects it is having on the way people makes and
understands presentations these days, but she does not stay there with her critiques. She goes further
and asserts that PowerPoint could be one of the causes of the Columbia space shuttle crash in 2003
saying that the rigid default format of the PowerPoint slides presented to the NASA senior managers

Since PowerPoint is being broadly used in all kinds of presentations especially in the educational
and business industries, some of its most outstanding characteristics will be discussed on the
following paragraphs. On the article "Toward a Better Understanding of PowerPoint Deck Design"
by David Farkas, professor of the Department of Technical Communication at the University of
Washington, he points out ten problems with the use and study of this application. Some of the most
important problems will be addressed next: The first one he discusses is the relationship between
PowerPoint and the organizational culture which deals with the fact that PowerPoint is not guilty of
the bad organization of the users, in this case of NASA, where they are required to have the capacity
of deciding when PowerPoint is a suitable mean of communication and when it is not. On his second
point he classifies PowerPoint slide presentations in two categories, as performance support or for
standalone use. He indicates that when the speaker is creating a PowerPoint presentation he/she
must be aware of the purpose of the slides, asking himself if the slides will be distributed to the
audience as a future reference and therefore should contain information that can be understood later,
or if they will work just as a support during the presentation and future references will be provided
in a separated document. Farkas

My Pretivation Of Early Child Observation
My observation took place in 3–4 yrs. old preschool class. During my observation, there were 2
teachers and 7 children.
Teacher–directed experience This observation part took place during circle time. The children sat
down in a large circle carpet, each on a letter. One of the teachers sat directly across the children,
with her back facing the calendar. The other teacher sat down in between two children. All the
windows were open and there was music playing softly in the background, as they got ready to start.
Teacher began by singing and playing the "Good morning song," while "signing" the song. Children
follow the teacher and began to sing, and make movements with their hands to follow along. They
proceeded by singing the days of the week, months of the year, "What's the weather" songs.
Following by going over the seasons, month and day of the week. Consequently, teacher followed
by reading a story for the children. She used a felt board to assist her with the story. She read, "Five
Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed." She smiled as she told the story, and tucked the monkeys
behind her back as they fell off. Teacher provided opportunities for children to collaborate on
solving how many monkeys were left. The children were engaged in the story, and smiled and sang
as she told the story.

were in free choice time. The area I focused on was the "Dramatic

 I believe the most beneficial presentation would be either of the HEAT presentations because
students are now able to make life altering choices on their own.
 The presentations on alcohol and drugs and safe sex because it's never too late to learn about
those things or it's always good to be reminded.
 The resources that the campus offers.
 The HEAT presentations and going through registering for classes.
 Sex Ed. presentation.
 The presentation about the various office and center provided on campus.
 Smith Career Center because it's a really helpful resource that I feel like many students forget to

 The Smith Career Center because in the future it's going to be very helpful for us students.
 B.A.D. because they really explain how to get involved and have events to meet new students.
 The Smith Career Center is beneficial to future students because it allows them to think about
what future job they might want to do.
 Sex Ed. – A mistake could be very bad.

Presentation In The Military
Presentations can be unforgettable. They cause us to envision possibilities and contemplate the
future. Unfortunately they can also be unforgettable in how they make us suffer. They can be
tedious. Both examples were apparent during my 24 year career in the military.
Bovee and Thill state, "Planning oral presentations are much like planning any other business
message: You analyze the situation, gather information, select the right medium, and organize the
information" (p.434). Presentations in my organization accomplish this and other times don't.
Usually one can tell when this has been done and when it hasn't. Several are effective and others
aren't.
There are basic reasons why specific presentations capture attention and certain don't. One of the
biggest problems with presentations in our workplace is, redundancy. They pound the same
information repeatedly. There have been presentations delivered, where person decided that a word
or point needed to change that would create little to no difference in the presentation; however, we
would be required to view another presentation of the same material, occasionally less than a month
after having it presented. This goes against one of Bovee and Thills purpose for a message, "Will
anything change as a result of your message" (p. 94).
Others are quite the opposite. There are times we have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

craft a presentation they would always try the best they could. One could realize their inexperience

(Bovee & Thill, 2016 p. 448). Several of the junior members would become frustrated over making
mistakes. If one happened, you could notice them unravel during their presentations. They would

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Cognitive Style Of Powerpoint
In his persuasive piece "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint" Edward Tufte, although skillfully
delivering his anti–PowerPoint point of view to an audience of presenters, is unable to provide a
fully convincing argument against the famous presentation program. Tufte's "The Cognitive Style of
PowerPoint" is a direct and well–versed attack against PowerPoint. With a humorous but confident
tone, Tufte provides an easy, captivating read. At this point, the sheer charm of the text alone creates
a receptive audience who, even if they disagree with his words, continues reading nonetheless. With
key phrases such as "a conclusion that can only be reached by not reading Miller's paper" (Tufte
160), Tufte creates the idea that he has indeed read the aforementioned ... Show more content on

For example, Tufte states that "we should find a better tool to make presentations" (Tufte 159), but
offers little alternatives. His only alternative, in fact, is to revert time and distribute paper hand outs
and verbal presentations. (Tufte 160) A fair strategy for presentation, but lacking in regards to
utilizing the potential of modern technology. This paper–flipping alternative is also condemned by
his own anti–PowerPoint message of "audiences endure a relentless sequentiality, one damn slide
after another" (Tufte 158) by simply replacing the word "slide" with "page". He also attacks
PowerPoint presentations' "preoccupation with format not content" (Tufte 158) while ironically
littering his own text with photos and graphics, three out of four pages containing an image. This
allows the audience to raise an eyebrow at his own hypocrisy. Tufte's argument is a series of
contradictory statements and, although he complains about "PP Phluff" (Tufte 158), his piece seems
to be filled with Tufte's own fluff and

Alyson Cummins: A Theatre Review
A seminar that starts with an opening question from Daisy, asking us about something interesting
and cultural we saw during this week. Some of my colleagues mentioned that they saw serials like
The Vampire Diaries, dance shows, and also that they are going to see later in the Gulbenkian, the
theatre play I am a Beast. My answer to the opening question was the serial Heroes, and I was
surprised how many people actually know it. I showed my interest in it and explained that I like it
because it is different and it entertains me and keeps me away from stress when I am watching it,
being fully concentrated into it. After this opening question, Daisy made us a proposition to choose

In addition, as I miss information from it, I will introduce my thoughts about the Tuesday's lecture
with date 7/03/2017. Alyson Cummins is the designer that gave us the lecture, and I must say, it is
also the person that showed me the importance of the role in theatre. Her passion and enthusiasm
were clearly visible, and I really enjoyed listening to her and being able to see the process of her
work step by step. First of all, she mentioned that if it is a complex play they might contact the
designer 3 or 4 years before and that sounded shocking to me, as that means the designer is starting
a work for a play that is going to be represented in 4–5 years. After that, Alyson starts her process of
research, collaborating with the director and producer. In addition, she creates the story board with
or without the director, and after creating also a mosaic, she brings a sketch module to the crew. It
was also interesting that she mentioned how the production manager is doing almost everything, a
good amount of work, and that she would be really stressed if that was her role. Moreover, another
engaging part of her presentation was that she tries to save money as much as possible, being
creative not only while designing, but outside that zone. Alyson Cummins also creates the costumes
and the design could be ready an year before the rehearsals, she mentions, and when the performer
starts to rehearse, they already know better their character than her. The pictures Alyson showed us
from her shows and the designs for the costumes, staging, set, really impressed me, as she combined

My Informative Speech On Parcheesi
For any presentation, keeping the audience engaged is the number one priority. Over the course of
the semester we learned various techniques to engage with the audience and to keep them focused.
For example, asking the audience questions either during or after your presentation can be a good
way to make the audience feel involved. Asking for volunteers is another way to make your
audience feel important. These were some techniques that I liked to use during my presentations. I
used both of these techniques specifically during my informative speech about Parcheesi. One
reason that I think the audience was the most engaged during my informative speech is because it
was a new topic for most of them. A lot of people have not heard of Parcheesi and I think the
introduction of a new topic helped keep the audience engaged. When I would around while giving
my informative speech I saw a lot of "active listeners". The textbook defines active listening as

by posing a question, telling a story, making a startling statement, or opening with a quotation. The

want to hear more" (Lucas 65). In my introduction for my informative speech I used a lot of the
techniques that the book discusses. For example I asked questions, like "How many of you like to
play board games" and "Have any of you ever played Parcheesi?" (Sullivan 1). Another technique
that I used in my introduction was telling a story. In my introduction I said, "Every night before I go
back to school my grandma comes over and my mom, brother, grandma, and I eat spaghetti and then
play a game of Parcheesi" (Sullivan 1). I also used a quote in my introduction paragraph for my

Features And Use Of Negotiation In A Business Environment
Negotiation is needed to maintain an ease of work flow, effective communication allows you to get
things done faster and more efficiently and also reduce arguments. For example in my workplace
my colleague doesn't like having excess mail in our shared inbox as she needs to attend to specific
emails so I have to remove any unnecessary mail so as to not prevent her from working effectively.
1.1 Explain the features and uses of negotiation in a business environment There are two main types
of negotiation: integrative negotiation and distributive negotiation. Integrative negotiation refers to
the notion of a win win situation and pertains to a mutally beneficial effort whereas distributive
negotiation is more of a win lose situation where both parties are competing with one another. 1.2
Identify the components of negotiation tactics There's four common strategies used for negotiating
such as: yielding–someone readily accepting the other parties proposal to avoid ill feelings,
compromising–coming up with a fair deal for both parties, competing–both parties competing to try
to win regardless of what happens to the other, problem solving–similar to compromising, both
parties come up with a solution to will help both parties get what they need. Element 2 Understand

Undeniably, presentations give individuals an opportunity to connect with your clients, colleagues,
and other contacts. Presentations are a rich two–way communication environment. However, it is
essential that you build credibility before, during, and after your presentation. In addition,
authenticity is of the utmost importance; even if you plan and rehearse, authenticity must be

ensure that your presentation is effective. Moreover, it is crucial that your nonverbal behavior

After that we took a look at what our reviewers wrote for us. In their review of our PowerPoint, one
thing they stated was, "The only thing that we would change is the font. It seems to be very close

would be best to follow their advice and change up the font and spacing. We changed the font sizes
of both the titles and subtitles to fit best for the specific slide. Each slide now has different font sizes
and formatting to make it most appealing for specific slide that it is on, and it made our presentation
easier to follow. Another suggestion that we received was "The bullet points are not consistent

presentation addressing a professional audience. After looking at what our reviewers were
referencing, we noticed that the bullets changed shape as the presentation progressed. This made the
presentation inconsistent and we decided that it had to be changed. Changing the presentation to

suggestion that we received on the Powerpoint from the peer review pertained to the titles of the

Personal Narrative: The Epic Tale Of Beowulf
This story begins with me stumbling into my High School senior English course, Senior English B.
It was the first class of the day, starting roughly at 8:00 am, I was never too thrilled to be up around
this time, even to this day. The day was hot and sunny, as per usual in the sunny vista that is
Phoenix, Arizona. At this point and time in my life, I was just waiting for High School to end;
moving on to larger avenues was the most important thing on my mind. Every day I had these
thoughts in my mind, and today was no different. As I took my seat in the back of the musty and old
classroom that was barely maintained over the years, our teacher, Mr. Burns began telling us about
our next assignment. Everyone groaned, just wanting the onslaught of work to finally come to an
end. In retrospect, the work was only truly just beginning. The assignment was to be a group effort,
each group to contain five people. As a class, we had just finished reading the epic tale of Beowulf,
and for our group assignment we had to present a section of the story to the class in a fun and more
enjoyable format. Mr. Burns had listed some possible choices: Jeopardy, board games, replaying the
section in a theatre format. Dread was all I could feel at this point. Seventeen–year–old me just

Essay on Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Louis de Bernieres uses three principal techniques to portray the effects of war so powerfully in his
book. These techniques are the powerful narrative, strong pictorial language, and black humour.
Above all, the message is conveyed in the narrative, especially when
Louis De Bernieres graphically describes the war's impact on the soldiers who are fighting for their
country. At first, the soldiers are united in their fight against the enemy "you are all young and
strong, overflowing with life, and you are all in this shit together"
– page 38. The mood at the beginning is positive, so much so that the "soldiers grew to love each
other" – page 38. They were excited about being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All their illusions disappeared:
"We fought and froze and died for an empire that has no purpose" – page 151. The war seems to
deaden the soldiers' souls. An example of this is on page 134 "I could think of nothing at all. I was
an automaton without emotion or hope". In the end the soldiers break down totally – they degenerate
into despair and become like animals, as shown on page 232: "Within the space of a few days we
had become skeletons, rooting for food like pigs."
The horror and hostility of the war made the soldiers despair so much that they were happy to die –
"Dear mother, I came into this world in a state of innocence and leave it so utterly wearied that I am
contented to die." This was how they ended up after all the atrocities they had witnessed and
committed. "War is a dirty business. We all have to do terrible things." Mandras almost God like in
his beauty at the beginning, kills an old man; the war seemed to deaden all their feelings and
sympathy. They are left without "emotion or hope".
By describing this degradation of morale and emotions, Louis de
Bernieres powerfully shows the physical and mental effect of war on the soldiers. A good example
of this deterioration is Mandras. Before the war he was physically beautiful, harmonious in the way
he moved, and strong. He had "slim hips...sharp shoulders...a taught stomach" that made him look
powerful and sculpted. However, after the war, he

Analyse the advantages and limitations of different methods of, and media for, making presentations
A variety of communication media can be considered when planning to produce a presentation, for
example verbal communication and written communication, each type of communication media has
its advantages and limitations. When developing my presentation I decided to use both verbal and
written communication, although both communication methods were used I had to ensure that they
were used in the correct quantities. To keep my presentation engaging I tried to use as much visual
representation as possible limiting the amount of text per slide. I chose to use PowerPoint because of
its combination of written and verbal communication (not to mention the cost effectiveness of
choosing PowerPoint and simplistic interface); the written aspects included the text on the slides,
screenshots and images. The screenshots proved particularly useful as they was of the actual

Evaluation Of A Powerpoint Video Essay
Introduction
The artifact I am reflecting on is a voice project, which is a PowerPoint video that I developed
during the Health Education Methods and Materials (HLED 558) course, that held on the Summer
of 2015 semester at Eastern Michigan University. The PowerPoint video was made as a part of the
plan to advocate the EMU Tobacco Free Policy that went on effect July 1st, 2015. Also, it was made
to market the STOP cessation program that will be implemented later to help student quitting
smoking. This PowerPoint is mainly a collecting of some pictures showing different places at EMU
campus in a very beautiful view. In addition, the PowerPoint also include the EMU free zone map
moreover, the logo of the policy, and the logo of STOP program that were designed by two of my
class peers and the. The EMU website was used as a source for some picture. The idea of the
PowerPoint is based on showing the beauty of the EMU campus and making the connection of that
to the EMU environment and student health regarding tobacco free campus. That connection was
made by adding some thoughtful words emphasizing the hidden meaning I want to show behind
those picture. Then delivering the message about the policy and the program, all that with a
companion of music.

The close up on Frankenstein as he speaks his final words focuses all our attention on him. We
suddenly have a feeling of anger towards the monster as he has just tortured a suffering man to
death. The situation here is that creator has been destroyed by his creation. The film then tries to
make us feel sorry for the monster. This is shown during the scene in which Captain Walton comes
down into his cabin shortly after Frankenstein's death after hearing a groan from below deck and
finds the creature weeping over the corpse of the recently deceased scientist. Walton asks the
creature what he is and he answers with "he was my father." This reply starts to build up our
sympathy for the monster as he has just lost his "father". This scene tries to increase the sympathy
successfully when the creature also says "he never gave me a name." This adds to the sympathy by
making us feel guilty that this creature towards whom we first felt anger doesn't even have a name.
At this point the scene changes to the funeral of Frankenstein and we can see that the creature stands
away from captain Walton and his men. This emphasises his loneliness and difference to mankind.
This depiction of the monster's loneliness is given greater depth when he says, "I am done with
man" in his reply to Walton's request for him to come with

THE DRAMATIC SIGNIFICANCE OF SICK CHARACTERS IN OLA ROTIMI'S PLAYS Odia
Clement Eloghosa ABSTRACT In this paper, the sick characters are studied through the
examination of their dramatic significance and contributions to the development of Ola Rotimi's
drama. Three aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick:
(1) act as witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse
emotions in the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of
suspense in the plays. I INTRODUCTION The paper examines the dramatic significance of sick

He identifies collectivist consciousness as the defining factor which crystallizes Rotimi's
advancement of themes like solidarity, followership and self–sufficiency. Femi Osofisan, Toyin
Akinosho, Umukoro et al and Effiok Uwatt have made cursory remarks on Rotimi's use of sick
characters and these are worth reviewing here. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in
African dramaturgy and theatre practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play
he considers as belonging to "the tradition of socialist theatre" and posits that the aim of the sick in
that play is to teach "our masses the virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences
in face of common economic exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down
trodden" (5). On his part, Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi's Behold My
Redeemer, a play directed by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief
comments on Rotimi's portrayal of sick characters. He says, "As director and playwright, Ola Rotimi
is known for using the sick to portray the Nigerian Society" (11). He adds that in Our Husband, the
playwright uses the sick to paint "the Nigerian politician as a mad power seeker". Umukoro et al,
examining the major events in The Gods, briefly interpret the use of sickness in the play thus, "The

Instructions on How to Create a Voice Narrated PowerPoint
Introduction
This report provides step–by–step instructions for eighth grade students on how to create a voice
narrated PowerPoint with slides that advance automatically for Windows users.
Creating a PowerPoint is a computer process in which the user uses the Microsoft Word PowerPoint
feature to create a presentation.
Knowing how to create a PowerPoint presentation with slides that advance automatically and are
voice narrated is a beneficial process to know as a student. Creating PowerPoint presentations is a
process students will go through throughout the course of their schooling, and they may possibly use
this process after schooling depending on their career. Using PowerPoint is helpful for both the
presenter and the person viewing the presentation. Presentations provide a way for people who are
visual learners, or people who prefer viewing images and viewing words, as well as audio learners,
people who prefer hearing discussions, a more effective way to learn. According to Wendy Corbett,
who is certified in designing learning, "When you use both words and pictures, you are actively
engaging both working and long–term memory" (Corbett, 2015, p.66). This means that using
learning or teaching tools that provide both discussion and a visual allows the viewers to actively
use their memory, which will in turn aid in the viewer remembering what the presentation was
about. As a presenter, using PowerPoint

Public Speaking Self Reflection
Public Speaking Self–Reflection
COM/128
May 11, 2014
Public speaking has always been very hard for me, I've never been the type to stand in front of an
audience and speak or do a presentation. No matter how many times I've done presentations I've
always get nervous or shy and always forget what I rehearsed. In the military I was training Nco,
everytime we had a new marine check in to our unit or are shop. I would be the one to give them
and the A presentation on what is expected of them and also give them information about the unit
and our shop. In my opinion the Marine Corp prepared me for public speaking, especially if you
where lower rank and your senior enlisted would throw you to the wolves and send you up there to

What do you want to accomplish in this course?
Whether I like it or not I been given the opportunity to talk to large crowds like a squadron or just a
couple of people in the class. My problems have always been the same getting shy, anxiety, and
even sweating. Learn to analyze the size of the audience, I want to be able to captivate my audience
and overall I just need to find the confidence in myself to do it.
How would you plan to improve weak areas to accomplish your goals? Overall no matter how many
times I do a rehearsal or practice I always get stage fright. Stage fright is my weakest area I have
done rehearsals and private or with one or two people but when it comes to the bigger picture I
always freeze. I need to learn to speak with confidence and try to get the audience involved instead
of rushing the presentation or speaking very softly so no one hears me I need to be able to let the
audience know that I am confident and the information that I am sharing is worth their time to listen
and learn

Working On A Group Is Not An Easy Thing Working

  • 1. Working On A Group Is Not An Easy Thing Working When working on a group you have to be a listener and a leader at the same time, you have to make sure you help your group. Being in a group is not an easy thing working with people can be challenging specially when they work at a different rhythm or even a different way, I've had different experiences working in groups but personally I can agree that this group was a perfect fit for me, at the beginning it was very difficult due to the fact that several of our classmates withdraw the class and did not inform us before they did, this made us change our approach but at the end we ended up working it out and making it work. The work we did as a group was easy we decided to meet at the speech lab and brainstorm the best way of presenting our subject; we decided on assign each of the group members their task and what was going to be the role they would be playing in the group, the order they would present and with was the subject they were going to elaborate in. I was in charge of explaining what is a nonverbal message and how important it is, so I made sure of researching everything I could not only by reading the chapter, but also by doing some outside research witch gave me a lot of information and understanding of this subject. After we all had the area we would concentrate in we decided to meet up again and practice what we had so far and star with the power point and decide on another visual aid, we decided on doing a clip on the series lie to me but at the end we could ... Professional writing is defined largely by the training that prepares a person for this field. Those composing sales materials are usually expected to have familiarity with the products or services that will be distributed to clients. There are legal ramifications to composing and distributing written materials, or composing product instruction guides or sales materials. Copyright infringement and liability issues are two major ones. As a result, the training of a professional writer or journalist usually prepares him or her to undertake writing assignments while not running afoul of these issues. • 14. Dramatic Tension in Miller's All My Sons Essay Dramatic Tension in Miller's All My Sons This extract begins with Chris and Ann deciding how they're going to break the news to the Kellers. They start with Joe Keller, and he somewhat approves. The scene is lighthearted until Keller finds out the George is on the phone for Ann from Columbia. This drives is suspicions and gets him very protective. He begins to try and hint to Chris that Ann is here to try and convict him of the death of Larry. Chris then gets very angry with him, and Joe compensates by bringing out his extreme love and care for the success of his family. The tension of the scene gradually builds up until this part, where Joe Keller abruptly gets very content and jokes about how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience can sense this with the direct tone in Chris' speech to his father. Miller very effectively uses contrast between the tension in a scene with the skillful use of light hearted preludes or interludes. The contrast means the dramatic tension has increased. This is usually done with characters like Frank or Sue. This helps the audience distinguish the tension better. In this extract, Miller uses Keller's overriding affection and graduated self confidence at the end of the extract to bring down the tension. Keller becomes very witty and cheerful: "There's gonna be a wedding, kid, like there never was scene! Champagne, tuxedos–!" The tension is very abruptly brought down, as it directly follows Chris and Keller's argument. The contrast in tension creates a morbid curiosity in the audience, where they can no longer predict what is to come, which makes the play even better. This increases the rate of anticipation. The most obvious feature of drama is perhaps the dialogue. Miller uses the skill of using offensive speech to bring about the tension. He deliberately causes conflict between two characters to increase the tension. More over, Miller uses stage directions as a dramatic device to bring about the tension in a scene. Keller makes a 'distracted' entrance onto ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. My Communication Skills Of My Life And How They Have Been... Being able to communicate is a great skill that one can practice every day of our lives. There are several ways or types of communication skills I have learned in this course such as vocally, written, visually, or non–verbally. In this assignment, I am going to write about my communication skills in three periods of my life and how they have been developed. First, I would like to talk about how I was when I was a little. When I was about five or six years' old, I was spoiled between my family just like most of the other kids. However, outside my house I can describe myself as a shy and quiet girl that I sometimes in school I have been bullied by other students. When I was five years old my dad enrolled me and my half–brother who is as my age in a kindergarten school. I was always with my brother and I felt safe around him, but when we become at the seventh age, my dad couldn't have enrolled us in the same school because he was told that I was born at the last days of November and they would accept me in the school with the next generation. Therefore, my dad decided that I am going to a private school so that I can be with my generation. At the first day of school I was afraid to be alone without having my brother around me. I just hated that school because I was just by myself, and my classmates were not nice to me at all. The boys and some girls were very mean and like to be bullying for example, they always take my stuff and refused to return them back when I ask them to, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Credibility Was A Strength For Me 1.) Credibility was a strength for me. The books illustrates that "to present with professional excellence, you must demonstrate credibility and help your audience believe you and the information or argument you are presenting"(250). I felt I did a good job in the way I explained my experience in the music industry and how I've been successful. I didn't just rush into my main points and I allowed the audience to believe what I am saying is credible. Secondly, the design an informative speech I felt was another strength of mine. The book says "try to incorporate a variety of supporting material such as examples, statistics, and quotes" (253). The way I used the quote from Troy Carter I feel gained attention because when I mentioned he was Lady ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book explains, "a well–designed conclusion can elevate a presentation from average to excellent, whereas a poor conclusion can make an otherwise excellent presentation fall flat" (279) . This is something I need to work on because I feel I did great explaining my main points but from watching the video and putting myself in the perspective of the audience I realized my ending was very weak. I was to focused on memorizing the main points and details that I forgot about my conclusion. The books makes great points that in order to allow the audience to know when a conclusion is coming phrases like "In conclusion", "In summary", "As I close", or "I would like to end with" can all be good transition phrases. One more weakness I would say was the lack of research to support my ideas. In regards to how to gather a speech the book says "the research you need in order to develop and support your presentation can and should come from a variety of sources. Depending on the topic, you must use internal sources, external sources, or a combination of two" (272) From watching the video I felt I used to many internal sources and not enough external sources. I was disappointed because I had many sources at hand but I didn't mention them as much as I would have liked because I was so worried about forgetting my body of the speech. In order to improve this I will have a sheet in front of me with the sources as a guide. I think I would have been able to remember to mention the sources if I had a reminder in front of ... With many assignments leading up to one major task, students were challenged throughout the semester to eventually present themselves to a fictitious group of employers. Throughout this short essay, I will reflect on the creation of the professional online portfolio as well as experiencing the actual presentation. Creating the POP Not only did I enjoy the creation of the POP, it helped me think back in my past and explore areas I had forgotten about. It's somewhat like an interview; you must recollect memories of times you were successful at work and in academics. With Wix, the website builder, I was able to design the site how I wanted it to look. I remember creating a Wix website about five years ago and the advancement of the online software is incredible. Back then, it was very lame and very bland. In utilizing the cloud–based software today, I was given full creativity and could express myself creatively. My favorite part of my POP are the sections in which you can scroll from slide to slide. Instead of crowding my website with boxes and forcing the reader's eyes to shoot everywhere, I designed my interests and academic projects areas into a single box with a sliding queue. Since PowerPoint is being broadly used in all kinds of presentations especially in the educational and business industries, some of its most outstanding characteristics will be discussed on the following paragraphs. On the article "Toward a Better Understanding of PowerPoint Deck Design" by David Farkas, professor of the Department of Technical Communication at the University of Washington, he points out ten problems with the use and study of this application. Some of the most important problems will be addressed next: The first one he discusses is the relationship between PowerPoint and the organizational culture which deals with the fact that PowerPoint is not guilty of the bad organization of the users, in this case of NASA, where they are required to have the capacity of deciding when PowerPoint is a suitable mean of communication and when it is not. On his second point he classifies PowerPoint slide presentations in two categories, as performance support or for standalone use. He indicates that when the speaker is creating a PowerPoint presentation he/she must be aware of the purpose of the slides, asking himself if the slides will be distributed to the audience as a future reference and therefore should contain information that can be understood later, or if they will work just as a support during the presentation and future references will be provided in a separated document. Unfortunately they can also be unforgettable in how they make us suffer. They can be tedious. Both examples were apparent during my 24 year career in the military. Bovee and Thill state, "Planning oral presentations are much like planning any other business message: You analyze the situation, gather information, select the right medium, and organize the information" (p.434). Presentations in my organization accomplish this and other times don't. Usually one can tell when this has been done and when it hasn't. Several are effective and others aren't. There are basic reasons why specific presentations capture attention and certain don't. One of the biggest problems with presentations in our workplace is, redundancy. They pound the same information repeatedly. There have been presentations delivered, where person decided that a word or point needed to change that would create little to no difference in the presentation; however, we would be required to view another presentation of the same material, occasionally less than a month after having it presented. Her passion and enthusiasm were clearly visible, and I really enjoyed listening to her and being able to see the process of her work step by step. First of all, she mentioned that if it is a complex play they might contact the designer 3 or 4 years before and that sounded shocking to me, as that means the designer is starting a work for a play that is going to be represented in 4–5 years. After that, Alyson starts her process of research, collaborating with the director and producer. In addition, she creates the story board with or without the director, and after creating also a mosaic, she brings a sketch module to the crew. It was also interesting that she mentioned how the production manager is doing almost everything, a good amount of work, and that she would be really stressed if that was her role. Moreover, another engaging part of her presentation was that she tries to save money as much as possible, being creative not only while designing, but outside that zone. Alyson Cummins also creates the costumes and the design could be ready an year before the rehearsals, she mentions, and when the performer starts to rehearse, they already know better their character than her. • 53. My Informative Speech On Parcheesi For any presentation, keeping the audience engaged is the number one priority. Over the course of the semester we learned various techniques to engage with the audience and to keep them focused. For example, asking the audience questions either during or after your presentation can be a good way to make the audience feel involved. Asking for volunteers is another way to make your audience feel important. These were some techniques that I liked to use during my presentations. I used both of these techniques specifically during my informative speech about Parcheesi. One reason that I think the audience was the most engaged during my informative speech is because it was a new topic for most of them. A lot of people have not heard of Parcheesi and I think the introduction of a new topic helped keep the audience engaged. When I would around while giving my informative speech I saw a lot of "active listeners". The textbook defines active listening as "Giving undivided attention to a speaker in a ... In my introduction for my informative speech I used a lot of the techniques that the book discusses. For example I asked questions, like "How many of you like to play board games" and "Have any of you ever played Parcheesi?" (Sullivan 1). Another technique that I used in my introduction was telling a story. In my introduction I said, "Every night before I go back to school my grandma comes over and my mom, brother, grandma, and I eat spaghetti and then play a game of Parcheesi" (Sullivan 1). We took these two suggestions into consideration, and decided it would be best to follow their advice and change up the font and spacing. We changed the font sizes of both the titles and subtitles to fit best for the specific slide. Each slide now has different font sizes and formatting to make it most appealing for specific slide that it is on, and it made our presentation easier to follow. Another suggestion that we received was "The bullet points are not consistent throughout the PowerPoint". This was a silly mistake that would have been foolish to leave in a presentation addressing a professional audience. After looking at what our reviewers were referencing, we noticed that the bullets changed shape as the presentation progressed. This made the presentation inconsistent and we decided that it had to be changed. Changing the presentation to make the bullets consistent made our presentation appear much more professional. It was the first class of the day, starting roughly at 8:00 am, I was never too thrilled to be up around this time, even to this day. The day was hot and sunny, as per usual in the sunny vista that is Phoenix, Arizona. At this point and time in my life, I was just waiting for High School to end; moving on to larger avenues was the most important thing on my mind. Every day I had these thoughts in my mind, and today was no different. As I took my seat in the back of the musty and old classroom that was barely maintained over the years, our teacher, Mr. Burns began telling us about our next assignment. Everyone groaned, just wanting the onslaught of work to finally come to an end. In retrospect, the work was only truly just beginning. The assignment was to be a group effort, each group to contain five people. As a class, we had just finished reading the epic tale of Beowulf, and for our group assignment we had to present a section of the story to the class in a fun and more enjoyable format. Mr. Burns had listed some possible choices: Jeopardy, board games, replaying the section in a theatre format. Dread was all I could feel at this point. Essay on Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli’s Mandolin Louis de Bernieres's Captain Corelli's Mandolin Louis de Bernieres uses three principal techniques to portray the effects of war so powerfully in his book. These techniques are the powerful narrative, strong pictorial language, and black humour. Above all, the message is conveyed in the narrative, especially when Louis De Bernieres graphically describes the war's impact on the soldiers who are fighting for their country. At first, the soldiers are united in their fight against the enemy "you are all young and strong, overflowing with life, and you are all in this shit together" – page 38. The mood at the beginning is positive, so much so that the "soldiers grew to love each other" – page 38. They were excited about being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All their illusions disappeared: "We fought and froze and died for an empire that has no purpose" – page 151. The war seems to deaden the soldiers' souls. An example of this is on page 134 "I could think of nothing at all. I was an automaton without emotion or hope". In the end the soldiers break down totally – they degenerate into despair and become like animals, as shown on page 232: "Within the space of a few days we had become skeletons, rooting for food like pigs." The horror and hostility of the war made the soldiers despair so much that they were happy to die – "Dear mother, I came into this world in a state of innocence and leave it so utterly wearied that I am contented to die." This was how they ended up after all the atrocities they had witnessed and committed. "War is a dirty business. We all have to do terrible things." Mandras almost God like in his beauty at the beginning, kills an old man; the war seemed to deaden all their feelings and sympathy. They are left without "emotion or hope". By describing this degradation of morale and emotions, Louis de Bernieres powerfully shows the physical and mental effect of war on the soldiers. A good example of this deterioration is Mandras. Before the war he was physically beautiful, harmonious in the way he moved, and strong. He had "slim hips...sharp shoulders...a taught stomach" that made him look powerful and sculpted. When developing my presentation I decided to use both verbal and written communication, although both communication methods were used I had to ensure that they were used in the correct quantities. To keep my presentation engaging I tried to use as much visual representation as possible limiting the amount of text per slide. I chose to use PowerPoint because of its combination of written and verbal communication (not to mention the cost effectiveness of choosing PowerPoint and simplistic interface); the written aspects included the text on the slides, screenshots and images. The close up on Frankenstein as he speaks his final words focuses all our attention on him. We suddenly have a feeling of anger towards the monster as he has just tortured a suffering man to death. The situation here is that creator has been destroyed by his creation. The film then tries to make us feel sorry for the monster. This is shown during the scene in which Captain Walton comes down into his cabin shortly after Frankenstein's death after hearing a groan from below deck and finds the creature weeping over the corpse of the recently deceased scientist. Walton asks the creature what he is and he answers with "he was my father." This reply starts to build up our sympathy for the monster as he has just lost his "father". This scene tries to increase the sympathy successfully when the creature also says "he never gave me a name." This adds to the sympathy by making us feel guilty that this creature towards whom we first felt anger doesn't even have a name. At this point the scene changes to the funeral of Frankenstein and we can see that the creature stands away from captain Walton and his men. This emphasises his loneliness and difference to mankind. Three aspects of dramatic significance are identified in this paper and we argue that the sick: (1) act as witness and help the healthy establish truth, (2) create crisis situations that stir up diverse emotions in the audience, and finally, (3) heighten dramatic tension which boosts the degree of suspense in the plays. Osofisan, examining the political imperative in African dramaturgy and theatre practice, makes some passing comments on the sick in Hopes, a play he considers as belonging to "the tradition of socialist theatre" and posits that the aim of the sick in that play is to teach "our masses the virtue of collective struggle, the irrelevance of tribal differences in face of common economic exploitation and the possibility of heroism among the poor and down trodden" (5). On his part, Akinosho, reviewing the performance of Rasheed Gbadamosi's Behold My Redeemer, a play directed by Ola Rotimi, and which has a psychiatric setting, makes brief comments on Rotimi's portrayal of sick characters.
