Every day millions of people in the world are making an impact and difference that should be
recognized and honored. To continue, this is the reason why there are so many statues in the world,
including in art museums, in libraries, and even on the campuses of colleges, to show forth the
honor and respect people have towards them for making a difference in their lives. For instance, a
campus statue represents a symbolism to an individual who has made an impact on the grounds of a
college campus that will be remembered for a life time. In this case, Columbus State University

The Georgia Institute of Technology's Library is a research institution located in Atlanta Georgia.
The prestigious academic library is an integral hub for science and engineering students from around
the globe. From its small origins in a one room classroom and only one librarian in 1901; the library
officially opened its doors in 1907.As of 2014, the library now requires a large staff of 136–150
employees, in order to maintain the academic library. The materials budget varies from $4,000,000
to $6,818,190. A huge portion is spent on periodicals and databases. A portion of the budget, around
$250,000 is deviated for monograph or books. A wealth of resources and imperative information, the
library's approximate collection for titles is 1,061,206; volumes is 2,537,869 (including 248,580 e–

employed at the GA Tech library for 22yrs. Initially he worked in circulations, now he works in
monograph (books) acquisitions as the Assistant Head of Acquisitions & Serials. He is responsible
for the purchase of monographs and standing orders; receives and processes purchase requests. I
also conducted a web interview with Elizabeth Winter, the Assistant Department Head & E–

Thus, metadata quality cannot be assessed by a full MARC record. Instead, catalogers must use
other assessment methods. For instance, Bruce and Hillman assess quality metadata through a seven
layer framework: completeness, accuracy, provenance, conformance to expectations, logical
consistency and coherence, timeliness, and accessibility (David & Thomas, 2015). A different
proposal from Stvilia and Gasser (2008) propose a system of assessment that analyzes metadata

quality of the metadata is higher than a record whose applications for an end–user are minute (Park

Library Observation Essay
For my first school library teacher observation, I observed Ms. Gallo–Toth at Brookline Public
School's John D. Runkle Elementary School. According to the Brookline Public Schools website
(PSBMA) Website– Runkle School, para.3) is a K–8 school that has about 560 students. The Runkle
School is also a host to many Spanish English Language Learner students as well as the Reaching
Independence through Structured Education program for children on the autistic spectrum. I
observed Ms. Gallo–Toth introduce the library to sixth grade students as well as visit kindergarten
classrooms to become acquainted with the kindergartners before their formal visit to the library.
Furthermore, I observed an author and illustrator visit to first and second graders at the Martin
Sleeper Library at the John D. Runkle School that derived from collaboration between Ms. Gallo–
Toth and a local independent bookstore. Moreover, I increased my understanding of how a school
library teacher employs collaboration and flexibility to administer the school library program. The
culmination of my observations of Ms. Gallo–Toth highlighted how school library teachers have
many roles within the school such as instruction, collaboration, promoting literacy, and as the school
library program administrator.

After high school I struggled through numerous retail jobs. As fate would have it however, my wife
would introduce me to someone who worked with the Chicago Public Library. I was able to land a

Libraries have a long history towards the ancient world as places used to keep important records
such as clay tablets, transcripts and many texts. Many records were destroyed in the course of wars
or purposely by some rulers with the changes in government. As a result, writing of literature as well
as record keeping was encouraged where classification schemes were initiated to preserve those
records of all times. The first formal classification was categorizing the writings into four types, the
classics, history, philosophy and miscellaneous works. (Library, 2016). However, these broad

I chose to observe the library I work for, which is the Squirrel Hill location of the Carnegie Library
of Pittsburgh system. I performed my observation around 3:30 PM on Monday, September 19th.
There are technically three outdoor entrances, but two of them actually lead to the main inner
entrance. You can see the main entrance from the street, which allows paid parking. The library
itself is positioned above a parking lot (also paid parking), which is where the second main entrance
is seen. Both of these two "main" entrances lead to the same lobby area where you can either take
the steps or the elevator to the library floor. The third entrance is located on the opposite side of the
branch along the side street, which is residential and free parking, but you can't see the entrance
until you physically walk up the driveway.
Upon entering, there are no signs indicated the layout of the library. At potentially strategic locations
as determined by the Facilities department, there are extremely vague maps indicating emergency
exits for the building, but they are small and not very noticeable. By the main outer entrances, there
is an elevator, stairs, and a space for flyers (bulletin board and a shelf); by the inner main entrance,
there's a bench outside. Upon entering the library, the magazine collection and first security stand is

different. They assign key words using controlled vocabulary, classification schemes, and other to

I think on some level the words nuanced and equitable contradict each other. These words can be
understood as existing on a continuum. On one end there are the "nuanced" (i.e. more precise or
expert) classification systems which tend to serve the skilled searcher very well, and the novice
searcher very badly. Unless you are familiar with the controlled vocabulary you are unlikely to find
answers. On the other end of the spectrum there are "equitable" classification systems which, in the
struggle to make the search easy and possible for all, lose the nuance needed to find what is
specifically sought. Search engines for example, are broad and constrained by very few search rules.
The knowledge gained from a search engine can be found by nearly anyone with basic knowledge.
The results returned from many poorly constructed searches, however, are generic and the number
of results can be so broad as to be meaningless. So which is better? To have an access system so
stringent that a layperson will have a difficult time retrieving results? Or have an access system so
open that anyone can retrieve results, but the results may not be as relevant as they need to be? As

I performed my observation around 3:30 PM on Monday, September 19th. There are technically three outdoor entrances, but two of them actually lead to the main inner entrance. You can see the main entrance from the street, which allows paid parking. The library itself is positioned above a parking lot (also paid parking), which is where the second main entrance is seen. Both of these two "main" entrances lead to the same lobby area where you can either take the steps or the elevator to the library floor. The third entrance is located on the opposite side of the branch along the side street, which is residential and free parking, but you can't see the entrance until you physically walk up the driveway. Upon entering, there are no signs indicated the layout of the library. I think on some level the words nuanced and equitable contradict each other. These words can be understood as existing on a continuum. On one end there are the "nuanced" (i.e. more precise or expert) classification systems which tend to serve the skilled searcher very well, and the novice searcher very badly. Unless you are familiar with the controlled vocabulary you are unlikely to find answers. On the other end of the spectrum there are "equitable" classification systems which, in the struggle to make the search easy and possible for all, lose the nuance needed to find what is specifically sought. Search engines for example, are broad and constrained by very few search rules. The knowledge gained from a search engine can be found by nearly anyone with basic knowledge. The results returned from many poorly constructed searches, however, are generic and the number of results can be so broad as to be meaningless. So which is better? To have an access system so stringent that a layperson will have a difficult time retrieving results?
