ing Spelling Rules
Definition:
Continuousverbsandgerundsendin"-ing"andhave special spellingrules.
Example
Laura is talking right
now.
talk+ ing
Explanation
The -ing spelling rules are --
add "-ing" to the verb.
when a verb ends in "e", drop the "e" and add "-ing".
For example: "take + ing = taking".
when a one-syllableverb ends in vowel + consonant,
double the final consonantand add "-ing".
For example: "hit + ing = hitting".When a verb ends in vowel+
consonantwith stress on the final syllable, double the consonant
and add "-ing". For example: "begin + ing = beginning".
Do not double the consonantof words
with more than one syllable if the stress is not on the final syllable.
For example: "remember"
has three syllables -- re:mém:ber -- and the stress is on the second syllable.
Therefore do not add another consonant -- "remembering".
2. Activity # 1
When ing is added to a verb ending in e, the e is dropped,e.g.
ride - Rogeris riding his pony.
When ing is added to some verbs the last letter is doubled.
These words have a short vowel sound and a consonant. The
consonant is doubled before adding ing. e.g. put - He is putting
his toys away.
Other verbs have no change and ing is added to the end.
