2. What is liver cirrhosis?
Liver cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease characterized by
the replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue,
leading to impaired liver function and potential
complications such as portal hypertension and hepatic
failure.
The lobular architecture is lost and instead nodules
have replaced lobules and being connected by
fi
brous
septations (From activated stellate cells/Ito cells)
mediated by TGF -B.

3. Causes of liver cirrhosis
m/c cause of cirrhosis worldwide is NASH
m/c cause of cirrhosis in india is alcohol induced.
Chronic HBV/HCV infections (not signi
fi
cant anymore.
Autoimmune hepatitis.
Biliary disorders: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) &
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
metabolic disorders: wilson's disease hemochromatosis.
Vascular causes: Budd-Chiari syndrome

5. Sign and symptoms
Spider angiomata or spider nevi
Palmar erythema (Exaggerations of normal speckled mottling
of the palm, due to altered sex hormone metabolism.)
Gynecomastia ( Benign proliferation of glandular tissue of male breasts
presenting with a rubbery or
fi
rm mass extending concentrically from the nipples)
Hypogonadis m Manifested as impotence, infertility, loss of sexual drive, and
testicular atrophy due to primary gonadal injury or suppression of hypothalamic or
pituitary function)
Enlargement of liver
Splenomegaly
Ascites

9. Management
Medical management:-
Rest
Sodium restricted
High CHO. Protein& low fat diet.
Administer diuretic eg. Lasix
Antacid
Antibiotic
Corticosteroid
Alcohol restriction
