Reflection On Stress And Anxiety
On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, I attended a Stress and Anxiety workshop at the Miller
Learning Center in room 207 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event was hosted by University Health
Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services for personal enrichment. The purpose of this session
was to learn about new ways to manage stress and anxiety while maintaining a hectic schedule. As I
entered the room, there was a group of 30 diverse students – ones who I would assume had
everything under control. It became less nerve–racking as there were students ranging from
freshman to seniors, boys and girls, students of color – anxiety bonded us together. Our instructor,
Dr. Debra Kay Alvis, provided a calm and kind presence: soothing her audience after their long day
of stress. She broke her lecture into two sections: science and experiment.
The first component was the scientific aspect of stress and rising cortisol levels. By educating us on
how our body is functioning, we can understand the importance of meditation and breathing
exercises on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Cortisol is the stress hormone that interferes
with learning and memory, it lowers immune function and bone density, increases weight gain,
blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, etc. This hormone alerts the adrenal glands to increase the
production of adrenaline; adrenaline is responsible for the fight or flight response in humans which
explains why we say or do things that we don't mean to. Dr. Alvis

They can vary depending on what type of meditation you choose or guides that teach you
meditation.
The most common features of meditation include:
– Focusing – focusing attention is generally one of the most important elements of meditation. It
helps to free the mind from thoughts that you turn away from meditation and cause only stress and
worry. Concentrate on one particular object, image, or mantra only on your breathing.
– Relaxed breathing – a technique that involves deep, even breathing by straining the diaphragm to
expand the lungs. The purpose is to slow down breathing, inhale more oxygen and relax your
shoulders, neck and upper chest while breathing, so practically more efficient breathing.
– Quiet environment – if you are a beginner, meditation will be easier if you are in a quiet place,
where no one and nothing will disturb, including off the TV, radio and mobile phone. As you
become more adept at meditation, you can do that anywhere, especially in very stressful situations,
where you meditation most used, for example, in a traffic jam, at a stressful business meeting or in a
long line at the

Field Reflection Essay
Before coming to the field exercise I was so busy with other things that I honestly didn't think much
about it. At some of my old churches I was in sort of leadership so we would go to the other people
houses in the church and would pray for each other. I thought that this experience would be similar
to that. In those times we would eat and then fellowship and while everyone was there we would
pray for the people who needed or asked for prayer. I expected that this experience would be similar
to that one in which we would pray for people and then see what was happening. I did not expect
much talking since I knew a lot of people from my very introverted class was going to be there. Me
personally was having such a busy week that I knew as soon as I felt a strong presences from the
Lord it was going to be a good time. The only thing I felt nervous about going was that I had never
gotten something from the Lord that I could really tell was from the Lord. It mostly feels like what I
think or goes along with something that I had experienced so I am never really sure if I should say
anything or not. During the couple of hours that we were at the professor's house it was a very laid
back setting and we all just sat around and talked and prayed. To start everything off the professor
asked if anyone needed prayer and then things just went from there. During the experience there was
no super spiritual ritual or thing we had to do we just had to show up be ourselves and listen to what

Spiritual Leader Peter At The Prison Gate
Spiritual Leader Peter was to be placed on trial. He was asleep, fastened with two chains between
two soldiers. Others stood guard at the prison gate. An Angel had come before peter in his prison
cell. When he saw the Angel, he thought he was dreaming. They passed the guard and city gates and
the angel left his presence. Peter came to the actual reality of knowing it was not a dream. Realizing
this he said, "The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what these people had
planned to do to me. Peter was a leader in the church, so he had prayed for God to work things out.
They were constantly in prayer. Once he was freed with the leading of the angel Peter took a visited
to the home of Mary. While a group of people were gathered there praying, he knocked, and a
servant came to answer the door. When she realized who it was, rather than open the door, she ran to
let everyone else know Peter was there. When she told the people gathered together, they did not
believe her. Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking on the door. When the door opened, they all were
shocked to see Peter standing before them again.
Jordan 2
Analysis
So Peter finds his way to this home, and the Bible says that many were there gathered together and
were praying. Here is a case in which prayer and living were simultaneous. They are still praying.
God has already answered some of the prayers in the past. He has placed Peter in a test of obedience
with prayer. The Bible teaches us to

You Can Read About It, But Then You Have To Do It.
Reading about meditation is an excellent way to become introduced to it. But for it to become a
practice, I have actually to do it. I have to practice it. By practice I meant the method I use to

Because I had struggled so much at the beginning of my practice, I developed empathy for those
who were starting their exploration of meditation. I had gathered a reputation for a gentle and
accessible approach to starting meditation. So, when I started mapping out the content of The Power
of Meditation, I realized I did have something to say because I had been helping other people
navigate around the same obstacles I had encountered myself.
The Power of Meditation
To me, the power of meditation is that the person meditating gets so much for such a small
investment. In beginning classes about spirituality, I start the class with a short five minutes of
unstructured quiet time. That investment of five minutes of quiet time yields a compelling benefit.
The tone of the class changes and we become silent, and aware of the always–present within and
around us. That 's the power of meditation: you get so much for so little.
Obstacles On The Path
One of the most challenging obstacles new meditators face is the expectation of instant results. I
remember a conversation with someone whose doctor recommended he learn to meditate. He had
heard that I wrote the book and wanted to ask me some questions. Mind you; he didn 't want to read
the book. He said to me, can 't you just give me what meditation is about in 5 quick bullet points so
that I can decide whether or not it 's for me.

Should I Chew My Food Before I Swallow It?
I want you to think of the last time you ate a big juicy steak. I 'm talking about that well–seasoned,
perfectly cooked (medium, of course!), that was so good you didn 't even need A1 sauce. What kind
of seasoning was on it? What kind of restaurant did you eat it at? Did you fix it yourself? Regardless
of your answers to any of these questions, I can guarantee one thing. If I ask you, "Did you chew up
the steak before you swallowed it?", you 'll look at me like Captain Obvious and think to yourself,
"This guy shouldn 't be preaching or writing blogs!"As difficult as it is for us to digest a steak after
chewing it well (here is more info on that), just imagine the type of indigestion and heartburn you
would experience if you swallowed it whole, piece–by–piece. You might be thinking, "Why is this
guy talking to me about steak? I thought this was about biblical meditation." That is exactly why I
gave you this brief illustration! For the Christian, biblical meditation is like chewing on God 's Word
so that the soul can enjoy and be nourished from it.
Do You Have a Leaky Gut?
If you do a Google search on the phrase "leaky gut", you 'll find an abundance of information

One of our Founding Fathers, George Washington, stated, "What students would learn in American
schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ." The religion of Jesus Christ definitely included the
practice of prayer. Prayer can definitely make better citizens. The Founding Fathers also identified
another benefit of promoting prayer in school is that it teaches children to be morally correct.
Samuel Adams said in 1790, "Let divines and philosophers, statesmen and patriots, unite their
endeavors to renovate the age by impressing the minds of men with the importance of educating
their little boys and girls, inculcating in the minds of youth the fear and love of the Deity. . .and
leading them in the study and practice of the exalted virtues of the Christian system." A third benefit
of school prayer is that it can decrease the natural egocentrism (concern for your own interests and
welfare) to which all mankind is prone. Praying for others can cause students to think more of their
peers than of themselves. It can also foster the idea that living for others is better than living for
one's self. Prayer also fosters the concept that we all are dependent upon God. This sense of
dependence will also lead to lives lived in thankfulness. In short, prayer in schools may produce
better people as well as better students. Finally, by praying to God, students may want to know Him
better. Preparing students for

Reflection Paper On The Tazaie Prayer
Taizé Prayer
At the Taizé prayer, the area with the altar and candles was inviting. First the silence for about 10
minutes, then the music played, followed by long pauses for praying and reading the scriptures
together. The prayer around the Jesus cross in the center was about to begin when a person placed
the cross on the ground and next to the cross a pillow for people to kneel and express their burdens.
After about ten minutes, the prayer around the cross continued, but this time the cross was moved to
a table. People freely approached the cross at the table and placed their heads on it or kissed the
cross. After a few more prayers were said aloud, then the final prayer was said followed by a song as
the closing. From this opportunity of praying in a group, I learned about the gifts and challenges of
prayer while reflecting in silence and listening to the meditative music.
The Taizé prayer is an opportunity to reflect on your day or your life and pray with others together.
This was my first time in a Taizé prayer, I have never heard about it before this class. The Taizé
prayer is a different way from how I am used to communicating with God. The prayer is centered on
a worship group that between silence, songs, prayers, and bible readings, people stand up to
acknowledge the cross statue in the center by kneeling in front or kissing the statue. The prayer
relates to Kay Lindahl's contemplative listening or listening in silence to God in Practicing the

spoke to me because I do have a close relationship to God and being helpful to other people is really
important to me. I attended the Brahma Kumaris meditation center to learn more about what
meditation consists of and expand my knowledge on why this is a big part in the Hindu religion. In
class we I learned about the different types of yoga that is practiced in Hinduism. Jhana yoga, Bhakti
yoga, Karma yoga, and Raja yoga are the different types of yoga practiced and I had some sort of
understanding on what I would possibly see in the meditation session. I did some research on what
the Brahma Kumaris meditation center was about and their main goal. In the Brahma Kumaris
meditation center they focus on specifically raja yoga and focusing on self reflection and positivity.
My first session at the meditation center was enlightening and very interesting because of the new
things I learned and what they focus on to help people overcome obstacles in their lives.
The main goal of raja yoga is to achieve control over the mind and emotions, to prevent negative

Essay On Mindfulness Meditation
1. Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness Meditation is an adaptation from traditional Buddhist meditation practices.
For a beginner, this is perhaps the most advisable way to get started with meditation. It is the type of
meditation that is most taught at schools and hospitals.
Mindfulness meditation is the practice of intentionally focusing on the present moment, accepting
and non–judgmentally paying attention to the sensations, thoughts, and emotions that arise.
How to do it:
Sit on a cushion on the floor, or on a chair, with straight and unsupported back. Pay close attention
to the movement of your breath. When you breath in, be aware that you are breathing in, and how it
feels. When you breath out, be aware you are breathing out. Do like this for ... Show more content

Your mind will get distracted into going along with sounds, sensations, and thoughts. Whenever that
happens, gently recognize that you have been distracted, and bring the attention back to the
breathing, or to the objective noticing of that thought or sensation. There is a big different between
being inside the thought/sensation, and simply being aware of it's presence.
There is also the practice of mindfulness during our daily activities: while eating, walking, and
talking. For "daily life" meditation, the practice is to pay attention to what is going on in the present
moment, to be aware of what is happening – and not living in "automatic mode". If you we
speaking, that means paying attention to the words we speak, how we speak them, and to listen with
presence and attention. If we are walking, that means being more aware of our body movements, our
feet touching the ground, the sounds you we hearing, etc.
Our effort in seated practice supports our daily life practice, and vice–versa. They are both equally
important.

Reflective Essay On Meditation
Meditation is a state of consciousness without focus on the world around you. The goal of
meditation varies for each individual, but it is typically done to achieve a sense of calm, reduce
anxiety, become self aware, and gain a broader sense of perspective. There are various activities that
are meditative and can deliver the mind clearing sensation, but I chose the traditional form of seated
meditation. When I chose meditation as my personal life change, I had no desired outcome. I simply
chose meditation because of my interest in Buddhism, and maybe even the opportunity to one of
those pretentious people who brag about how spiritually whole they are. Meditation can be done
anywhere as long as you're in a comfortable, seated position. However, I found that there are other
contributing factors to a successful meditation. After my first attempt meditating, I came to the
realization that it is much simpler to clear your mind in certain locations. I began meditating in the
comfort of my home alongside a scented candle, but I noticed quite quickly that it is a lot easier to
reduce stress when you aren't able to hear the sources of your stress parading around in the kitchen.
After moving my meditation location to a hammock in my backyard, I was able to focus on my
breath, the delicate inhalations and powerful exhalations, and the cool September air that cooled my

A Spiritual Gain but a Financial Lose
Meditation has always been seen as a way to keep the mind and soul healthy. Mediation dates back
to 1500 BCE originating in Ancient India. The practice soon started to expand and adapt to other
cultures around the world. Some of the earliest references to meditation are found in the Hindu
scriptures and it was around the 6th to 5th centuries that other forms of meditation developed into
Confucian, Taoist China, and Buddhist India (Taham). This spiritual and religious practice has been
around for thousands of years, benefiting many people. However, in the year 2017 mediation no

Research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially
help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors. In a 2012 study, researchers
compared brain images from 50 adults who meditate and 50 adults who don't meditate. Results
suggested that people who practiced meditation for many years have more folds in the outer layer of
the brain. This process (called gyrification) may increase the brain's ability to process information
(Meditation: In Depth).
In many ways, the scientific studies showing how positive mediation has created this craze of
mediation. Mediation can be linked to many exercise practices such as yoga. Meditation and yoga
go hand in hand. Spending a few minutes of meditating then go into a hard body workout of yoga
than ending the class with meditation. Many private yoga studies promote the practice of meditation
and yoga increasing prices of their facility. Famous instructor Holly Rilinger is a perfect example.
Rilinger has created this workout called "Calm and Cardio" starting with a five–minute guided
meditation and then launches into cardio and strength training intervals using bodyweight and
dumbbells. During each song, you alternate between two exercises while moving to the beat of the
booming music (Held). She has combined meditation with exercises and is now using this technique
of meditation to create an empire.
Exercise meditation is not the only thing that is expanding. There are

Time And Place To Meditate
Where, and when to meditate
Presumably, easier to find time and place to meditate, as long as you live alone. However, if you live
with a family, you are confronted with additional complications. Fortunately, in the beginning, it is
enough five–ten minutes to be alone, to sit on your cushion. Later, as a more advanced meditator,
probably you will want more time, by then hopefully, your family might be accustomed already to
your meditation habit, and likely they won't hinder you. We were talking about what type of
meditation could be the best for you. Now we discuss the best time and the place to meditate.
Where to meditate?
Foremost, let's begin with the easiest, the breath meditation. Usually, the recommendation for that, it
should take twenty–thirty minutes. Initially, it can be troublesome to find a fixed time for it. Besides,
it may feel tiring to sit still that long. Moreover, you can have too many disturbing thoughts, you do
not know what to do with, or perhaps it just seems way too boring to sit half an hour without doing
anything.

Nice try, but not the money since, we can increase its quantity. The single element we certainly feel
to have a shortage is time. People always have lack of time, and no one can increase the daily 24
hours to 25. We feel the lack of time especially at the end of our life. Otherwise, the time has an
extraordinary nature. The more action you fit into a given time, the less experience will remain in
your memory in the future. In case, you regularly operate in a multitask mode; you let the worth
remembering moments flow away between your fingers. On the other hand, meanwhile, you give

Buddhism During The Heian Period
Buddhism During the Heian period (745–1185AD) Buddhism spread throughout Japan and thrived
in the imperial court in Heiankyo (Kyoto). There were two sects of Buddhism that were most
popular during this time, one was Tendai and the other was Shingon. Both of these sects of
Buddhism came from China and were brought over to Japan by two different people. Saicho or
Dengyo Daishi brought over Tendai sect (767–822) and Kukai or Kobo Daishi brought over
Shingon sect (774–835) known as Esoteric Buddhism. Tendai sect beliefs were also of Esoteric
Buddhism, but Saicho teachings were based on Chih–I form inspired by the Lotus Sutra, the practice
of Chines Ch'an, the commandments of the Mahayant, and part of the esoteric teaching of the "True
Word" (History of Buddhism). Due to both Saicho and Kukai being introduced to Esoteric
Buddhism, some might have thought there was a rivalry between them, but that was not so due to
Kukai was consider an expert due to his training he had with his mentor. Out of the two sects it
would be Kukai that would still have a strong hold in the Japanese culture today. It is important to
understand how Kukai came to understand his beliefs and what Esoteric Buddhism was for him and
the influence Kukai would have on Esoteric Buddhism. Esoteric Buddhism (Shingon in Japanese)
"refers to the mantra words and syllables that convey the essence of the Buddha–teaching
(Symbols)." Esoteric is about the word of presence, the word of God, a divine word, a

buddhist temple reflection paper 2 1
My first experience in a Buddhist temple was quite different than anything I have experienced
religion–wise. I visited the Quan Am Monastery (Vietnamese–American Buddhist) at 3500 South
Goodlet. I got to experience first–hand how meditation in a Buddhist temple actually works. I was
very intrigued to find out how someone outside of the Christian faith, worshipped. As one might
expect, the atmosphere was very tranquil. My group members and I called ahead a few days earlier
and a man answered the phone and it was very hard to understand what he saying but I know I heard
him say "come on Friday so that's what we did. When we arrived we stepped outside the vehicle we

While we were meditating he told us to count every breath that we make and if we start to think of
anything start back over at 1. So we closed our eyes and began to meditate. While we were
meditating things kept irritating my face, for example a string of hair, but the thing is before we
started meditating wasn't anything bothering me. Isn't that ironic? After a while it went away when I
stop thinking about it; I truly think it was a figment of my imagination. We meditated for at least 30
to 45 minutes. He hit the dung 3 times to let us know the meditation was ending. When I opened my
eyes I felt so calm and relaxed as if I had no worries in the world. It was so peaceful. The guy who
led meditation opened up the floor for questions, but I really didn't have any questions to ask
because I was so calm and I had already asked all the questions that I needed to know when were
outside. So we ended the question part and he let us take pictures. We went outside and put our
shoes back on and walked around to the back so he could explain the statues to us. He allowed us to
go inside the Vietnamese temple and take a look around and it was the biggest temple I have ever
seen. He told us about what goes inside there. The Buddhist people that speak English go inside the
temple that looks like a house and the ones that don't goes inside the big one. We took pictures of the
building looked around. They welcomed us to come back if we wanted but I really had enjoyed
myself.

Reflection On Meditation And Visualization
Meditation And Visualizing: Review.
Most people hear about meditation from their families and friends but have little knowledge of what
the practice actually entails. Before joining my Masters Program in the field led by my experienced
and knowledgeable Professor Sophie Sore, I was both nervous and excited. I had no prior
experience with meditation neither visualization and had was still unsure of how the learning
experience would turn out. My friends had made comments that they had " lost their minds "after
their meditation experience. With no doubt, this made me skeptical about the program but my
intuition led me to one of the greatest and enlightening paths that I would ever undertake in my life.
The class has taught me that through imagery and visualization, we can enhance our productivity,
combat stress, anxiety, worries as well as all forms of tension. The lessons on EPT (Enhanced

left me with feelings of utter bliss. The other enlightening experience in the course was yoga which
was also a foreign concept to me before joining the class. Professor Sophie is indeed knowledgeable
in this realm. This quality added with her patience and her engagement with the students ensured
that as beginners, we were comfortable and had fun during these classes. I also appreciate the high–
quality Yoga mats that Sophie ordered for us to facilitate our home exercises. The downward facing
dog and the child's pose were two of my most favorite yoga positions. The positions stretched my

The Purpose of Prayer Before–the–Fact
What do I mean by prayer? Prayer is asking a before–the–fact favour from some sort of supernatural
deity. That favour (not yet granted) may not of necessity be a selfish wish or even something for
yourself, but perhaps praying for good things for someone else (like a ... Show more content on

No? Then I say again – what a waste. Further, no scholarly studies ever done on the beneficial
results of praying have ever shown that praying works. Any time–and–motion, cost–benefit analysis
of prayer would have to give those who practice it, and any management (i.e. – religious
institutions) who endorses it, the Big Thumbs Down.
Prayer and Your Dreamtime
If in your dreams, you pray, would that count towards extra brownie points with God, assuming of
course that praying actually yields brownie points in the first place?
Prayer and Your Pain or Gain Personal Satisfaction
Prayer is an ultra cheap way of feeling all warm and fuzzy in that you 've done your bit to make the
world a better place. No blood, sweat and tears; no pain and all gain, no hard yards to tackle. On the
other hand, you could get your praying palms dirty and do some real charity or other volunteer work
if you really want that warm and fuzzy inner glow.
Prayer and Statistical Results Personal
Does prayer work? If you pray, do you get proof–positive results? I doubt it. In fact I 'd go so far as
to say there 's not a snowball 's chance in Hell – not that there really is a Hell of course. The proof of
the pudding is of course, if prayer really worked, there would be miracles in that we 'd all be lotto

Transformative Essay: What Is Transcendental Meditation?
Transcendental Meditation According to Schneider et al., in a 5–year study with patients who have
coronary heart disease it was found that there is a 48% reduction in death, heart attack, and strokes
with people who used Transcendental Meditation as opposed to the control group (2012). Not only
is Transcendental Meditation great for an individual's health, but it is also great for reducing stress,
anxiety, and depression, increased school performance and helping treat some mental disorders such
as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
What is Transcendental Meditation?
To begin, Transcendental Meditation is a form of Meditation that cannot be learned by watching
videos on YouTube or from a book. Transcendental Meditation should be taught by an expert. Once
an individual learns this technique it should be practiced about 15 to 20 minutes twice daily. This
technique can be taught to anyone regardless of age, culture, or educational background (Chalmers,
2006). From research conducted by Travis, Grosswald, & Stixrud (2011) students would sit in a

There are two times throughout the day when meditation is most effective. As soon as someone
wakes up is a good time to start meditation. Even though most people are sleepy in the morning this
is the best time to meditate since the mind is quiet in the morning. It's important to start off the day
with energy, focus, and awareness that can be gained through meditation in the morning and will be
used throughout the day. The second time of the day that is best to meditate is the evening.
Meditation can help clear off the negative energies that a person might have picked up throughout
the day from working (Rama Meditation Society, 2012–2017). Although morning and evening have
been shown as the best times to meditate, meditation can be done at any time throughout the day or

The Number 1 Secret Meditation
Relaxation – the number 1 secret to meditation. However, there are some problems that make some
failed to achieve relaxation. NO matter how good meditation is, this will not be effective if you don
't learn how to relax.
For some reasons, especially the beginners, are having hard time to relax due to many factors. This
is one of the major objectives of meditative programs and trainings.
Most meditations require postures that are uncomfortable, and a lot of times, very uncomfortable.
Here are some of the common postures often used during meditation.
You may have heard a lot about meditation techniques such as the various postures that are used
while doing the meditation process.
However, many of us do not understand that there must be a kind of posture to be applied to a
specific meditation purpose.
Here are some:
a.) Lotus Position. This is the most common posture that you 'll see in mediation videos and
presentation. Yet, when this position is not implemented properly, this can make the person
uncomfortable and fail to concentrate. If you feel that you are doing well with the lotus position,
well, this is the best meditation posture for you.
b.) Seiza Position. This is the Japanese posture that cuts off blood to legs, thus decreasing relaxation
profoundly. Now, there are reasons why you would sit like this, and it does allow you to concentrate
and focused in pain of your legs in rather than something else. There are benefits to this type of

Reflection About The Taz Prayer
At the Taizé prayer, the place with the altar and candles was inviting; first the silence for about 10
minutes, then the music played, followed by long pauses for praying and reading the scriptures
together. The prayer around the Jesus cross statue in the center was about to begin when a person
placed the cross on the ground and next to the cross a pillow for people to kneel and express their
burdens. After about ten minutes, the prayer around the cross continued, but this time the cross
statue was moved to a table. People freely approached the cross statue at the table and placed their
heads on it or kissed the cross. After a few more prayers were said aloud, then the altogether final
prayer followed by a song was the end of the prayer. From this opportunity of praying in a group, I
learned about the gifts and challenges of prayer while reflecting in silence and listening to the
meditative music.
The Taizé prayer is an opportunity to reflect on your day or your life and pray with others together.
This was my first time in a Taizé prayer, I have never heard about it before this class. The prayer is
centered on a worship group that between silence, songs, prayers, and bible readings, people stand
up to acknowledge the cross statue in the center by kneeling in front or kissing the statue. You are
not alone, you spend the hour with people of different churches or religious beliefs either in silence,
singing, praying and worshipping.
During the prayer, I learned that the peace

Hinduism : Buddhism And Hinduism
Southeast Asia, particularly India, is the birthplace of many religions. India is where these two
religions arose: Buddhism and Hinduism. Hinduism is a very ancient belief system derived from the
lifestyle of Southeast Asia. It still has a strong presence in its place of origin and it is characterized
as a family of religions. An offspring of Hinduism, Buddhism is also a family of religions, except it
has less of a strong presence in its place of birth. Yet, situated to the East area of the world, it is the
leading denomination. Similarly, both religions utilize the term "Dharma", the way of life and
thought, to describe their customs. The only difference in this respect is that Buddhists link it to the
teachings of Buddha, who is the founder of their faith. Both religions have a long history and are
still active today and with one deriving from the other makes them comparable in some ways.
However, Buddhism and Hinduism are also contrasting in aspects like each religion 's clergy, rituals,
prayers, places of worship, and religious objects.
According to the dictionary, clergy is the body of people ordained for religious service. Unlike
Buddhism, Hinduism does not have an official clergy. Despite not having a formal clergy, it does
have Gurus who can teach as well as give advice and help. There are also Brahmins who aid Hindus
spiritually and offer guidance, and the Hindus ' main individuals, Pujaris, which are the Hindu
priests. He performs all the religious duties in the

The Power Of The Mantra
mantra that one repeats. By practicing constantly, the inherent power of the mantra may be
awakened, which may fill one's own existence with the divinity of the mantra. What is Mantra? A
Mantra is that which liberates or protects the mind.
"Mananaat trayate iti mantrah" Mananaat–bondage of the mind, trayate–freed or liberated, iti–
through or thus mantraha– the force of vibration.
.
A mantra may help to drive out the thoughts and worries. A mantra has strength and energy. When
these are present, the mind becomes the power of mantra. The power of the mind and the power of a
mantra are the same. In other words, the mind becomes one with the mantra.
"Chittam Mantrah" – Mind should become the mantra. The power of every mantra can be felt in the
form of vibrations. When an atom bomb explodes, its impact is felt not only for many kilometers,
but the effects remain for many numbers of years (for example like in Hiroshima Nagasaki). Mantra
is the cure for the mind. The mantra can be either a bheej mantra or doubles up as a prayer. The
effect of the mantra depends on how it is pronounced and invoked, and the dedication with which it

Similarities Between The Christian Rosary And The Buddhist...
"A religious individual may most gloriously carry out his or her own rituals, as a part of his or her
cultural identity, but the moment, that person starts to build a wall of separation between the self and
the rest of humanity, coaxed by the textual commands of a scripture, the healthy religiousness turns
into dangerous fundamentalism, which is a threat to both the self and the society." (Abhijit Naskar).
In the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people apart, and
hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By focusing on the
differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist between
different faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same
philosophies. However, by focusing on the similarities of different religion, through philosophies,
rituals, or teachings, we can then learn how to tear down walls, grow as people, and become
cognitive of our joint humanity. With the necessity of ecumenical relations in our community, it
serves humans to see the similarities between the faiths that can divide us. On such similarity exists
between the rituals of the Christian Rosary and the Buddhist tradition of Prayer Wheels, both are
physical guides for repetitive prayers and personal reflection and meditation. The Catholic tradition
of the Rosary is a long held practice of Marian prayer which dates back millennia. The tradition of

Prayer Is An Essential Discipline Of The Christian Faith
Introduction
Prayer is an essential discipline of the Christian faith. History and cultural differences show us that
many people engage in many different ways and techniques to pray and communicate with God.
How do you find the right way for you?
Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started
Having been a Christian for many years I thought that I had a fair knowledge of what it meant to
pray. I was amazed and humbled by the idea that through Jesus' restorative act on the cross I am able
to come into God's presence – and not only come but be welcomed and even longed for. I believed
that prayer is a powerful tool to petition God , a vehicle to praise Him , and an instrument to
increase our intimacy with Him . I understood that people pray in a variety of ways, based on the
teaching they have received, their experience, and even their personality. Most commonly, I engaged
in prayer as a conversation with God.
A Significant Christian figure in history who has contributed to this discipline
A person who was significant in articulating and exploring conversational prayer with God was a
Spanish nun, St Teresa of Avila. She was a prominent teacher of prayer and became a reformer of
her Catholic order in the sixteenth century . She is quoted in her book 'The Way of Perfection' as
saying, "Speak with Him as with a Father, a Brother, a Lord and a Spouse – sometimes in one way
and sometimes in another, He will teach you what you must do to please

Prayer Definition Essay
How easy is it to become disheartened or weary about praying? If we're really honest with
ourselves, it's pretty easy at times, especially when our prayers seem to go unanswered. How about
distractions? How easy is it to allow distractions to interrupt your prayers? How frustrating is it
when those unexpected thoughts pop into your head while praying? On average, how long can you
pray before these distractions take effect? If you're fortunate, it may be several minutes before things
we forgot to do or need to do just pop into our mind. We catch ourselves and go right back into our
prayers only to be distracted again, at some later time. Do you think this happens with every
Christian? How about with Billy Graham, R. C. Sproul, Vernon McGee ... Show more content on

Take a moment to think about ten of them. If I asked you, where in the world is the hardest place to
pray, where would you say? The hardest place would be here in the United States. Why? Awesome
question! As Americans, we've become so caught up in a culture of always doing "something" that
it's hard to slow down and pray for any length of time. It feels uncomfortable or feels like we're
wasting valuable time. Our society has placed such a high premium on accomplishments or on being
productive that prayer sometimes goes against the grain of our society. Do we see any
accomplishments in prayer? Are we being productive when we pray? Prayer is nothing more than
talking to God, but how many of us feel like it's hopeless or useless? We pray for healing only to
continue in sickness. We ask for victory over sin only to find defeat. What good does it do to pray?
Another problem with the American culture is our attention span. When we're not working, we're
watching television, playing video games, surfing the Internet(s) or on our smartphones. The next
time you go to a restaurant or to the movie theaters, look around to see how many people are on
their phones. Being still and quiet is not in the American culture. Sin is another "thing" which keeps
us from praying as we ought to. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet Act III, scene iii, Hamlet sneaks in
to kill King Claudius, who killed his own brother and Hamlet's father. At the end of the scene,
Hamlet realized he cannot kill Claudius and sneaks back out of the room and we hear Claudius say,
"My words fly up, my thoughts remain low. Words without thought never to heaven go." Claudius
tried to repent for committing murder, but he couldn't. We see him kneeling in prayer, but he
couldn't feel any sense of comfort or mercy from God. There's a realization that because he had no
intentions of confessing to the crime or even changing his life, his words were empty

Buddhist Mantra
The Significance of the Buddhist Mantra
In Dharamsala, India, in an open square, a Tibetan refugee sits exposed to the full force of the sun.
His skin is baked brown and wrinkled from many afternoons such as this one. He is thin as a rail,
and his legs fold beneath him in a way that looks painful to the westerners who pass him. He wears
tattered rags and looks unwashed, but sports a long white beard–a prized rarity among Tibetans. His
eyes, blind and white as his beard, stare placidly into the distance, then flutter as he lifts his head
and begins to chant. "Om mani peme hung," he calls. "Om mani peme hung."
Two Americans, a couple from New Jersey, witness this spectacle and are entranced. The man, after
much prodding from his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He returns to his room and waits for his wife to return from her day's adventures. But later that night
he ponders what he really learned: that om has three letters, that mani is a jewel and padme (as the
word the Tibetans pronounce "peme" is written) a lotus, and that hum (the Tibetan's "hung") is an
inherent contradiction. The next morning, when he boards his plane to Newark, he has passed his
final judgment on the blind man: though he may be a great practitioner of Buddhism, he is a silly,
superstitious man, and has grown far too fond of pretty words.
What are we to make of the fable above? Is it the story of a Westerner hastily passing judgment on a
tradition he does not understand? Certainly it is. The study of Tibetan Buddhism is the effort of a
lifetime–perhaps several–and a non–practicing Christian interloper from Hoboken is hardly
qualified to pontificate on the matter. (For the moment we will say nothing of an American college
student who has merely read a few books on the subject).
Yet is it not also possible that there is some truth to the ignorant man's claims? That what lies behind
the sacred institution of mantra is less profound esoterica than it is the pure, childish delight taken in
the sounds of language? This paper will seek to explore this possibility, both in the abstract and
through the particulars of the mantra of Avalokitesvara,

Hindu Temple And Yoga Service
From the Hindu Temple and Yoga service, surprisingly, the people I interviewed had a lot of
similarities in their thoughts and responses. For Hinduism, rituals consist of visiting the Hindu
Temple to chant prayers and participate in events such as singing Kirtans, songs in praise of God.
Radhika Ramesh and Raje Sathasivam both stated they attend Hindu rituals because it helps them to
connect with their religion and their community; most of the devotees can converse in Indian
language and connect with each other since people share the same heritage and culture. Through this
connection, I feel the dimension of ritual and aesthetic are the most important to the interviewees.

From Hinduism, I realized that religion plays a pivotal role for people since there are prayers and
rituals for each and every aspect of everyday life and special occasions. Religion not only connects
people to their Gods, but it also connects people spiritually through gatherings at the temple.
According to yoga instructor Lynne Boucher and Julie Tette, people oftentimes take part in yoga as a
means to become calm, peaceful, and centered through physical movement. The yoga service that I
attended was offered for Dance Team members as team bonding day right before our competition.
For yoga, I think the ritual and emotional dimension is most important for the interviewees. The
emotional dimension is strongly present since yoga is primarily about self–reflection of one's own
emotions such as love, stress, or fear. During yoga, Mrs. Boucher guided our thoughts us by asking
us to reflect about what our biggest fears are for the upcoming competition. Mrs. Boucher also
guided our session by telling us think about the stresses that occur within the dance team; then as we
acknowledged our stresses, she told us to breathe out and let go of worries, pressures, and anxieties.
For the ritual dimension of yoga, it plays a central role since it consists of collectively gathering to
support each other in a spiritual and physical way. When we held the tree pose, we realized how
hard it was told hold the pose by ourselves. Then as we were instructed to utilize each other for

One Of The Most Significant Characteristics Of Tantra
One of the most significant characteristics of TANTRA (origin 5th century CE) is the fact that it
does not require the ordinary householder to renounce the world by giving up our body, our family,
our material possessions, our job, even our pleasures. Instead it accentuates personal
experimentation and experience as a way to improve/advance on the path of Self–realization without
having to become a monk or swami. TANTRA breaks new yoga because it was/is available for
everyone without any type of discrimination. TANTRA rejected the classical patriarchal cast system
and exclusive Brahmanic orthodoxy in which only men and higher cast where suitable for the

It is through this precious human life and birth that we can free ourselves from ignorance and see
how things really exist. From Sanskrit: TAN = To expand, TRA= tool, instrument. TANTRA can be
seen as a technology or tool for expansion of consciousness and alertness. TANTRA does not reject
our objects of attachment or life conditions, but transforms how we relate to them. This is what
makes this practice so compelling today. For example, our inner attitude towards money doesn't
have anything to do with the money we have. Under TANTRA's view, there is nothing wrong about
having money or enjoying life, or being tall/short, or fat/thin, or being married/single, or being
employed/unemployed.., but whatever the circumstances, the attitude should be of detachment and
equanimity, then a sense of freedom arises. So the world and our conditions become an ally instead
of a hindrance in our spiritual development. In TANTRA there are two realities; SHIVA and
SHAKTI, SHIVA representing the total matter or the absolute and SHAKTI representing the total
energy or creative power. In TANTRA all reality can be divided on what we can see (visvamaya)
and what is beyond (visvottirna). To experience the ultimate reality we need to dissolve the notion of
duality in our consciousness. We need to become one from two.

Mindfulness Meditation Research Papers
Okay, so you've heard about meditation, and you've heard that it can be very beneficial to your
health and wellbeing, helping you to relax and find peace and tranquility. But you're also wondering
what different types of meditation there are, because you want to make an informed decision on the
type of meditation that is most suitable for you.
Breath Awareness
This is probably the easiest form of meditation, yet it can be extremely profound. All you have to do
is relax in a comfortable position (either sat upright or lying down), with your eyes either open or
closed, and just gently become aware of your breathing, without trying to change it. You can even
practice this throughout your day, for example while sat at your desk at work. It can ... Show more

This simple but constant repetition of the sound will allow the other parts of your mind to gradually
settle down, until eventually you become extremely relaxed, both physically and mentally.
Traditionally, meditators have used specific mantra with specific meanings, but it really doesn't
matter what you use as long as you find it comfortable to repeat. For me personally, I use the
meaningless sound "oowaa", which I repeat at a constant rhythm like "oowaaoowaaoowaaoowaa",
and so on.
Mindfulness Meditation
This involves becoming deeply aware of what actually IS in the present moment. This can be
anything. For example, if you have your eyes open you could become totally visually aware of your
immediate surroundings, plus any sounds too. If you have your eyes closed, you could become
aware of aspects of your body, such as your breathing, your posture, your feeling of relaxation (or
tension), plus even being aware of any thoughts that may naturally arise.
Walking Meditation
This is really a form of mindfulness meditation that you do while walking. You simply become as
aware as possible of the process of walking. In fact, you can do this with any process, such as
making a cup of tea or doing the washing up. Just let the action fully fill your

as how he was an administrator he would have known almost instantly. But he didn't call his buddies
to complain but he decided to go to God in prayer.
Application:
When you have conversations with people they don't mean anything all to often we want to call up
people a gossip and just talk about our problems but that does not yield anything you still must go
back to what you were doing before the situation occurred, but when you talk to God that is a
conversation that has power. That is a conversation that has some backbone, you can pray to King
Darrius if you want to but what is he going to do about and plus he can't hear them all, But God
hears every prayer and cad do something about it!

Myth Of Sanity
All throughout history Buddhist monks and the eastern religion have been performing meditation,
but recently others have been trying it. Meditation is a practice in which someone may train their
mind to be in a state of consciousness that benefits their mind and body. Meditation is about paying
attention, focusing and being very calm. It sharpens creativity and performance while enhancing
relationships. Meditators find when they stop taking things in life so seriously, the self–drops away.
They are more direct and absorb life easier.(Ellison 3&6). Meditation has been around for thousands
of years. In every religion, the instructions for meditating are the same, only the words differ. There
are two major types of meditation that may benefit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that way, meditation can be good to do because meditation enhances attention, combats anxiety
and depression, and increases compassion. Because Julia already faced many traumas and wanted to
recover from them. Thurman's observation can be helpful for her. "A growing body of research
indicates that in these ways the brain lays down traumatic memories differently from the way it
records regular memories" (421). No human being thinks the same way or acts, everyone is
different, and Stout believes that people set ways to keep themselves safe. Moreover, Julia has gone
days with no memory of what she has done, and this is a trigger her brain to keep her safe from
traumatic situations in the past (430). In short, Stout believes that sometimes your brain protects you
during a trauma situation, but when the situation is no longer continuous in your life. Then you react
to the similar situation in the worst way and affects the way you live your life. When Julia thinks
about her past, she feels depressed and insecure, by which she can't focus on her present. When she
thinks about her future, then she again falls into deep thinking about those experiences or traumas
that she didn't remember. When someone asked her questions related to her past, she got confused
and gave incomplete answers because she didn't remember, and when she tried

The Day Of My Meditation Practice
It is now the 8th day of my meditation practice. I can't believe how far I have come since the first
day. I was already addicted to the feeling and idea of meditation. I was surprised at how clear my
mind was today before I began my mantra recitation. As always, I felt the tension in my body fade
away as I got into my meditative practice. At the end of today's session I felt really good!
I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I started off
with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my mantra. I felt my body relax. I was surprise
at the feeling of ease and relation mediation was providing to me. I feel very good about this
practice.
Today I decided to do something a little different. Instead of repeating my mantra in my head using
my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio playing of the mantra. I sat on my bed and got
comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the mantra. It felt different listening to
someone else's voice, however I did enjoy it. I found myself more easily being able to concentrate
on the mantra, without having to think about the words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the
sensation that was running through my bones.
Once again, I choose to opt to listen to the audio playing of my mantra. I sat down and concentrated
on my breathing before hitting play. I enjoyed listening to someone else's voice, it was oddly very
calming. At the end of my session, I felt very joyful. I hoped to

Reflection On Stress And Anxiety

  • 1. Reflection On Stress And Anxiety On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, I attended a Stress and Anxiety workshop at the Miller Learning Center in room 207 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event was hosted by University Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services for personal enrichment. The purpose of this session was to learn about new ways to manage stress and anxiety while maintaining a hectic schedule. As I entered the room, there was a group of 30 diverse students – ones who I would assume had everything under control. It became less nerve–racking as there were students ranging from freshman to seniors, boys and girls, students of color – anxiety bonded us together. Our instructor, Dr. Debra Kay Alvis, provided a calm and kind presence: soothing her audience after their long day of stress. She broke her lecture into two sections: science and experiment. The first component was the scientific aspect of stress and rising cortisol levels. By educating us on how our body is functioning, we can understand the importance of meditation and breathing exercises on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Cortisol is the stress hormone that interferes with learning and memory, it lowers immune function and bone density, increases weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, etc. This hormone alerts the adrenal glands to increase the production of adrenaline; adrenaline is responsible for the fight or flight response in humans which explains why we say or do things that we don't mean to. They can vary depending on what type of meditation you choose or guides that teach you meditation. The most common features of meditation include: – Focusing – focusing attention is generally one of the most important elements of meditation. It helps to free the mind from thoughts that you turn away from meditation and cause only stress and worry. Concentrate on one particular object, image, or mantra only on your breathing. – Relaxed breathing – a technique that involves deep, even breathing by straining the diaphragm to expand the lungs. The purpose is to slow down breathing, inhale more oxygen and relax your shoulders, neck and upper chest while breathing, so practically more efficient breathing. – Quiet environment – if you are a beginner, meditation will be easier if you are in a quiet place, where no one and nothing will disturb, including off the TV, radio and mobile phone. As you become more adept at meditation, you can do that anywhere, especially in very stressful situations, where you meditation most used, for example, in a traffic jam, at a stressful business meeting or in a long line at the ... • 5. Field Reflection Essay Before coming to the field exercise I was so busy with other things that I honestly didn't think much about it. At some of my old churches I was in sort of leadership so we would go to the other people houses in the church and would pray for each other. I thought that this experience would be similar to that. In those times we would eat and then fellowship and while everyone was there we would pray for the people who needed or asked for prayer. I expected that this experience would be similar to that one in which we would pray for people and then see what was happening. I did not expect much talking since I knew a lot of people from my very introverted class was going to be there. Me personally was having such a busy week that I knew as soon as I felt a strong presences from the Lord it was going to be a good time. The only thing I felt nervous about going was that I had never gotten something from the Lord that I could really tell was from the Lord. It mostly feels like what I think or goes along with something that I had experienced so I am never really sure if I should say anything or not. During the couple of hours that we were at the professor's house it was a very laid back setting and we all just sat around and talked and prayed. To start everything off the professor asked if anyone needed prayer and then things just went from there. During the experience there was no super spiritual ritual or thing we had to do we just had to show up be ourselves and listen to what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suryanamaskar SURYA NAMASKAR 12 POSTURES OF SURYA NAMASKAR Introduction: Known variously as Surya Namskar or Prostrations to Sun or Sun Salutation, the Surya Namaskar is one of the best exercises that people can perform. The benefits accruing from these exercises are unique and excellent. This is a yoga based exercise and it is customary to perform Surya Namaskar after performing loosening yoga exercises. The human being can be thought of consisting of 'pancha kosas' (or five sheaths) consisting of the Annamaya (or Body), Pranamaya (or Breath), Manomaya (or Mind), Vijnanamaya (or Intellect) and Anandamaya (or Bliss) sheaths. There are six bija mantras. Each mantra consists of 'h', 'r', vowel and ends in 'm'. The bija mantras are: 'hraam', 'hreem', 'hruum', 'hraim', 'hroum' and 'hraha' (where the vowels are 'aa', 'ee', 'uu', 'ai', 'ou' and 'visarga or hah'. The twelve names of Sun are: Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pushan, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aditya, Savitha, Arka & Bhaskara. These six Bija Mantras are repeated in sequence to cover the twelve names of the Sun God. The three Rig Vedic hymns are used in the 12 mantras (one–quarter of the hymn used with each of these 12 names). The chanting of AUM mantra activates stomach, heart, brain and the overall body/mind, thus creating vibrations in the associated chakras. Digestion, respiratory and sensory activities go thru the powerful lens of AUM turning intellect and memory into sharp and powerful tools. Others stood guard at the prison gate. An Angel had come before peter in his prison cell. When he saw the Angel, he thought he was dreaming. They passed the guard and city gates and the angel left his presence. Peter came to the actual reality of knowing it was not a dream. Realizing this he said, "The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what these people had planned to do to me. Peter was a leader in the church, so he had prayed for God to work things out. They were constantly in prayer. Once he was freed with the leading of the angel Peter took a visited to the home of Mary. While a group of people were gathered there praying, he knocked, and a servant came to answer the door. When she realized who it was, rather than open the door, she ran to let everyone else know Peter was there. When she told the people gathered together, they did not believe her. Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking on the door. When the door opened, they all were shocked to see Peter standing before them again. Because I had struggled so much at the beginning of my practice, I developed empathy for those who were starting their exploration of meditation. I had gathered a reputation for a gentle and accessible approach to starting meditation. So, when I started mapping out the content of The Power of Meditation, I realized I did have something to say because I had been helping other people navigate around the same obstacles I had encountered myself. The Power of Meditation To me, the power of meditation is that the person meditating gets so much for such a small investment. In beginning classes about spirituality, I start the class with a short five minutes of unstructured quiet time. That investment of five minutes of quiet time yields a compelling benefit. The tone of the class changes and we become silent, and aware of the always–present within and around us. That 's the power of meditation: you get so much for so little. Obstacles On The Path One of the most challenging obstacles new meditators face is the expectation of instant results. I remember a conversation with someone whose doctor recommended he learn to meditate. He had heard that I wrote the book and wanted to ask me some questions. Mind you; he didn 't want to read the book. He said to me, can 't you just give me what meditation is about in 5 quick bullet points so that I can decide whether or not it 's for me.

One of our Founding Fathers, George Washington, stated, "What students would learn in American schools above all is the religion of Jesus Christ." The religion of Jesus Christ definitely included the practice of prayer. Prayer can definitely make better citizens. The Founding Fathers also identified another benefit of promoting prayer in school is that it teaches children to be morally correct. Samuel Adams said in 1790, "Let divines and philosophers, statesmen and patriots, unite their endeavors to renovate the age by impressing the minds of men with the importance of educating their little boys and girls, inculcating in the minds of youth the fear and love of the Deity. . .and leading them in the study and practice of the exalted virtues of the Christian system." A third benefit of school prayer is that it can decrease the natural egocentrism (concern for your own interests and welfare) to which all mankind is prone. Praying for others can cause students to think more of their peers than of themselves. It can also foster the idea that living for others is better than living for one's self. Prayer also fosters the concept that we all are dependent upon God. This sense of dependence will also lead to lives lived in thankfulness. First the silence for about 10 minutes, then the music played, followed by long pauses for praying and reading the scriptures together. The prayer around the Jesus cross in the center was about to begin when a person placed the cross on the ground and next to the cross a pillow for people to kneel and express their burdens. After about ten minutes, the prayer around the cross continued, but this time the cross was moved to a table. People freely approached the cross at the table and placed their heads on it or kissed the cross. After a few more prayers were said aloud, then the final prayer was said followed by a song as the closing. From this opportunity of praying in a group, I learned about the gifts and challenges of prayer while reflecting in silence and listening to the meditative music. There is also the practice of mindfulness during our daily activities: while eating, walking, and talking. For "daily life" meditation, the practice is to pay attention to what is going on in the present moment, to be aware of what is happening – and not living in "automatic mode". If you we speaking, that means paying attention to the words we speak, how we speak them, and to listen with presence and attention. No blood, sweat and tears; no pain and all gain, no hard yards to tackle. On the other hand, you could get your praying palms dirty and do some real charity or other volunteer work if you really want that warm and fuzzy inner glow. What is Transcendental Meditation? To begin, Transcendental Meditation is a form of Meditation that cannot be learned by watching videos on YouTube or from a book. There are two times throughout the day when meditation is most effective. As soon as someone wakes up is a good time to start meditation. Even though most people are sleepy in the morning this is the best time to meditate since the mind is quiet in the morning. It's important to start off the day with energy, focus, and awareness that can be gained through meditation in the morning and will be used throughout the day. The second time of the day that is best to meditate is the evening. Meditation can help clear off the negative energies that a person might have picked up throughout the day from working (Rama Meditation Society, 2012–2017). However, many of us do not understand that there must be a kind of posture to be applied to a specific meditation purpose. Here are some: a.) Lotus Position. • 54. Reflection About The Taz Prayer At the Taizé prayer, the place with the altar and candles was inviting; first the silence for about 10 minutes, then the music played, followed by long pauses for praying and reading the scriptures together. The prayer around the Jesus cross statue in the center was about to begin when a person placed the cross on the ground and next to the cross a pillow for people to kneel and express their burdens. After about ten minutes, the prayer around the cross continued, but this time the cross statue was moved to a table. People freely approached the cross statue at the table and placed their heads on it or kissed the cross. After a few more prayers were said aloud, then the altogether final prayer followed by a song was the end of the prayer. From this opportunity of praying in a group, I learned about the gifts and challenges of prayer while reflecting in silence and listening to the meditative music. The Taizé prayer is an opportunity to reflect on your day or your life and pray with others together. This was my first time in a Taizé prayer, I have never heard about it before this class. The prayer is centered on a worship group that between silence, songs, prayers, and bible readings, people stand up to acknowledge the cross statue in the center by kneeling in front or kissing the statue. You are not alone, you spend the hour with people of different churches or religious beliefs either in silence, singing, praying and worshipping. During the prayer, I learned that the peace ... Hinduism is a very ancient belief system derived from the lifestyle of Southeast Asia. It still has a strong presence in its place of origin and it is characterized as a family of religions. An offspring of Hinduism, Buddhism is also a family of religions, except it has less of a strong presence in its place of birth. Yet, situated to the East area of the world, it is the leading denomination. Similarly, both religions utilize the term "Dharma", the way of life and thought, to describe their customs. The only difference in this respect is that Buddhists link it to the teachings of Buddha, who is the founder of their faith. Both religions have a long history and are still active today and with one deriving from the other makes them comparable in some ways. However, Buddhism and Hinduism are also contrasting in aspects like each religion 's clergy, rituals, prayers, places of worship, and religious objects. According to the dictionary, clergy is the body of people ordained for religious service. Unlike Buddhism, Hinduism does not have an official clergy. Despite not having a formal clergy, it does have Gurus who can teach as well as give advice and help. • 60. Similarities Between The Christian Rosary And The Buddhist... "A religious individual may most gloriously carry out his or her own rituals, as a part of his or her cultural identity, but the moment, that person starts to build a wall of separation between the self and the rest of humanity, coaxed by the textual commands of a scripture, the healthy religiousness turns into dangerous fundamentalism, which is a threat to both the self and the society." (Abhijit Naskar). In the recent history of our society, the actions of religious extremists have driven people apart, and hatred has grown from a lack of ecumenism between those of different faiths. By focusing on the differences between religions, and not on the latent similarities that inherently exist between different faiths, people become blinded to how various religions are all rooted in the same philosophies. However, by focusing on the similarities of different religion, through philosophies, rituals, or teachings, we can then learn how to tear down walls, grow as people, and become cognitive of our joint humanity. With the necessity of ecumenical relations in our community, it serves humans to see the similarities between the faiths that can divide us. On such similarity exists between the rituals of the Christian Rosary and the Buddhist tradition of Prayer Wheels, both are physical guides for repetitive prayers and personal reflection and meditation. • 64. Prayer Is An Essential Discipline Of The Christian Faith Introduction Prayer is an essential discipline of the Christian faith. History and cultural differences show us that many people engage in many different ways and techniques to pray and communicate with God. How do you find the right way for you? Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started Having been a Christian for many years I thought that I had a fair knowledge of what it meant to pray. I was amazed and humbled by the idea that through Jesus' restorative act on the cross I am able to come into God's presence – and not only come but be welcomed and even longed for. I believed that prayer is a powerful tool to petition God , a vehicle to praise Him , and an instrument to increase our intimacy with Him . I understood that people pray in a variety of ways, based on the teaching they have received, their experience, and even their personality. Most commonly, I engaged in prayer as a conversation with God. A Significant Christian figure in history who has contributed to this discipline A person who was significant in articulating and exploring conversational prayer with God was a Spanish nun, St Teresa of Avila. She was a prominent teacher of prayer and became a reformer of her Catholic order in the sixteenth century . She is quoted in her book 'The Way of Perfection' as saying, "Speak with Him as with a Father, a Brother, a Lord and a Spouse – sometimes in one way and sometimes in another, He will teach you what you must do to please ... If we're really honest with ourselves, it's pretty easy at times, especially when our prayers seem to go unanswered. How about distractions? How easy is it to allow distractions to interrupt your prayers? How frustrating is it when those unexpected thoughts pop into your head while praying? On average, how long can you pray before these distractions take effect? If you're fortunate, it may be several minutes before things we forgot to do or need to do just pop into our mind. We catch ourselves and go right back into our prayers only to be distracted again, at some later time. Do you think this happens with every Christian? How about with Billy Graham, R. C. The hardest place would be here in the United States. Why? Awesome question! As Americans, we've become so caught up in a culture of always doing "something" that it's hard to slow down and pray for any length of time. It feels uncomfortable or feels like we're wasting valuable time. Our society has placed such a high premium on accomplishments or on being productive that prayer sometimes goes against the grain of our society. Do we see any accomplishments in prayer? Are we being productive when we pray? Prayer is nothing more than talking to God, but how many of us feel like it's hopeless or useless? We pray for healing only to continue in sickness. We ask for victory over sin only to find defeat. What good does it do to pray? Another problem with the American culture is our attention span. When we're not working, we're watching television, playing video games, surfing the Internet(s) or on our smartphones. The next time you go to a restaurant or to the movie theaters, look around to see how many people are on their phones. Being still and quiet is not in the American culture. Sin is another "thing" which keeps us from praying as we ought to. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet Act III, scene iii, Hamlet sneaks in to kill King Claudius, who killed his own brother and Hamlet's father. At the end of the scene, Hamlet realized he cannot kill Claudius and sneaks back out of the room and we hear Claudius say, "My words fly up, my thoughts remain low. Words without thought never to heaven go." Claudius tried to repent for committing murder, but he couldn't. We see him kneeling in prayer, but he couldn't feel any sense of comfort or mercy from God. His skin is baked brown and wrinkled from many afternoons such as this one. He is thin as a rail, and his legs fold beneath him in a way that looks painful to the westerners who pass him. He wears tattered rags and looks unwashed, but sports a long white beard–a prized rarity among Tibetans. His eyes, blind and white as his beard, stare placidly into the distance, then flutter as he lifts his head and begins to chant. "Om mani peme hung," he calls. "Om mani peme hung." But later that night he ponders what he really learned: that om has three letters, that mani is a jewel and padme (as the word the Tibetans pronounce "peme" is written) a lotus, and that hum (the Tibetan's "hung") is an inherent contradiction. The next morning, when he boards his plane to Newark, he has passed his final judgment on the blind man: though he may be a great practitioner of Buddhism, he is a silly, superstitious man, and has grown far too fond of pretty words. What are we to make of the fable above? Is it the story of a Westerner hastily passing judgment on a tradition he does not understand? Certainly it is. The study of Tibetan Buddhism is the effort of a lifetime–perhaps several–and a non–practicing Christian interloper from Hoboken is hardly qualified to pontificate on the matter. (For the moment we will say nothing of an American college student who has merely read a few books on the subject). Yet is it not also possible that there is some truth to the ignorant man's claims? That what lies behind the sacred institution of mantra is less profound esoterica than it is the pure, childish delight taken in the sounds of language? According to yoga instructor Lynne Boucher and Julie Tette, people oftentimes take part in yoga as a means to become calm, peaceful, and centered through physical movement. The yoga service that I attended was offered for Dance Team members as team bonding day right before our competition. For yoga, I think the ritual and emotional dimension is most important for the interviewees. The emotional dimension is strongly present since yoga is primarily about self–reflection of one's own emotions such as love, stress, or fear. During yoga, Mrs. Boucher guided our thoughts us by asking us to reflect about what our biggest fears are for the upcoming competition. Mrs. Boucher also guided our session by telling us think about the stresses that occur within the dance team; then as we acknowledged our stresses, she told us to breathe out and let go of worries, pressures, and anxieties. Instead it accentuates personal experimentation and experience as a way to improve/advance on the path of Self–realization without having to become a monk or swami. It is through this precious human life and birth that we can free ourselves from ignorance and see how things really exist. From Sanskrit: TAN = To expand, TRA= tool, instrument. TANTRA can be seen as a technology or tool for expansion of consciousness and alertness. TANTRA does not reject our objects of attachment or life conditions, but transforms how we relate to them. This is what makes this practice so compelling today. For example, our inner attitude towards money doesn't have anything to do with the money we have. Under TANTRA's view, there is nothing wrong about having money or enjoying life, or being tall/short, or fat/thin, or being married/single, or being employed/unemployed.., but whatever the circumstances, the attitude should be of detachment and equanimity, then a sense of freedom arises. So the world and our conditions become an ally instead of a hindrance in our spiritual development. In TANTRA there are two realities; SHIVA and SHAKTI, SHIVA representing the total matter or the absolute and SHAKTI representing the total energy or creative power. In TANTRA all reality can be divided on what we can see (visvamaya) and what is beyond (visvottirna). To experience the ultimate reality we need to dissolve the notion of duality in our consciousness. We need to become one from two. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
