2. What is the job of a UK Film
Distributor?
• Job role: Create a large audience for a film. The film distributor
must assimilate the certain films target audience into their
advertisement strategies so they can make sure the production
appeals to the right target audience. The success of the film is
reliant on the role of the distributor, marketing is key as an
estimated total spend by UK film distributors is £189 million.
The role is to make sure the film scheduling is on time in order
to be in cinemas, this includes advertising the film ready for its
cinema release.
3. The Film Distribution Process
The process is key in the
success of the final products
success in cinemas as well
as selling through DVD’s or
VOD (Video On Demand)
4. What types of Film Distribution are
there?
0 The selected type of distribution mostly depends on features
such as famous celebrities appearing in the film which are
therefore bound to make money straight away due to fans of
the stars, this is called TENTPOLING where the production is
shown world wide with a large budget and a large fan base.
0 Another is where the production is only shown in a certain
location to appeal to its target audience and therefore make
sure the distribution process is successful. This is called
PLATFORMING.
5. My Ident
0 For my opening sequence, myself and my group decided to make our
own logo for our own distribution company. Upon thinking of ideas of
what we could call ourselves, in year 11 I created my own distribution
company called ‘MOO Productions’ which I felt was fun and exciting.
We wanted to research idents such as Pixar which include fun a
humorous aspects we wanted to include in ours.
0 The image is of a cow and funky writing to match our fun
personalities. With the help of Paul, I created the logo to be fun and
something for the audience to laugh at for the beginning of the film.
Louis created the ident with our input of the sound effect of a cow
mooing to match the theme of the name. below is our ident that is
played at the beginning of our piece- a low budget British film.
6. What type of film have I made and
if I could, who would I have
distribute it?
• My film is an independent low budget British film so I would have a
small distribution company such as ‘Blindspot Pictures’ who distribute
films such as ‘Iron Sky’. My reasoning for this is based on their
distribution techniques through ways such as crowd funding they
have been able to keep production costs down. I wouldn't’t mind
having extras through crowd sourcing as they would invite their family
and friends to watch- this would help box office figures. The film ‘Iron
Sky’ does have a gritty violent feel to it which I felt would be useful if
Blindspot was to distribute as they made an €8m profit from the film
after only an €7.5 million spend which €1m of this was through
crowdfunding. Iron Sky has been successful enough to make a
second film, this would mean the production was successful and the
box office sales made a profit.
