2. What is a distributor
• ‘The way in which something is shared across multiple
company's/areas’
• ‘The process you take to make your film available for audience
viewings’
• Distributors spend around £300 million so that they can bring films to
the market, build awareness and interest audience. They help to
market and generate sales and find the best help and people to be part
of the film.
3. What I would want to happen
• Having only made an opening sequence we would not publish this how it is, yet if
we continued to make the final product then this is what I would want to happen:
• The film/series is made at a low budget, niche, small development.
• I would market the film as being a TV series as this way it can continue and the
audience can be drawn in for a long period of time. I would choose a channel that
would want channel 4 to pick it up. this would be if they become interested in not
just showing our horror ‘film’/’series’ and would show other appropriate shows
within this genre. This was there is a common ground and viewers are more likely
to visit the channel if there are several programmes within this background.
4. Different company’s
• Vertigo Films: Is a UK film distribution that works with independent
cinemas. It has distributed 35 films and produced 28. Also included with post
production company’s.
• DNA Films: Production company. One of the most successful producton
company’s.
Includes: Never let me go, 28 Days later and Sunshine.
• Film 4: Production company known for making large numbers of films. They
worked alongside Digital TV channel and budgets were cut in 2002 due to
losses so recreated drama on channel 4.
5. Why I choose this specific company
• I have chosen to develop the film with channel 4, this is because it will more
likely to get a high viewing and the distribution financially will be helped to
access the best work. I would make it a series as these draw the audience in
and will keep them hesitating to know what’s going to happen next.
• I would want a urban multiplexes so that it can be shown across multiple
channels and box office releases. (if it was successful) I would want to do a
Spanish version as this is a popular language and using subtitles to do this
would create more of a audience and capture more viewings.
• From researching distributors a main company that I would highly
appreciate being included would be Entertainment UK distributor. This is
because they work with individual films within the UK and Ireland and are
known for their achievements with casting appropriate actors which I think is
an important part of film making.
6. DVD
• If the series was shown and successful then I would move the series forward
onto making a DVD this way I will be able to maintain audience and it is
more likely to be popular if there is always something new happening.
• I would also then publish and distribute a Spanish version. This way it is seen
worldwide and gives a bigger market and audience viewing. Once this is
done it also gives me an opportunity to make marketing sales with
merchandise.
• This is an example of the same genre and marketing that I would want to
publish. Women in black is viewing and would want the same response as
they got with their 2 films.
7. syndication
• Syndication is where you start with a channel and after and certain
amount of time you or the company are able to license the series/film
and broadcast it to other channels, programmes and radio stations.
This would be an advantage because more people will be able to watch
it and it will become more well known. There are different types of
syndications these range from First run where programs are not made
to be shown by the network. The next is Off network syndication and
this is where the film or series is first shown on television and is then
sold to other network stations. The final syndication is public
broadcasting and this means it is a non-public broadcast that is shown
within some station networks.
8. Bullet boy
• Bullet boy is a low budget independent film that was handled and
distributed by Verve Pictures. It very quickly got a reputation and
believe this is a great thing because it gets everyone talking about it
and means their will be more viewings. Even though it is a low budget
film they aimed high and wanted a wide audience and succeeded to
opening 75 prinks UK wide.
• The production company for bullet boy was shared across 3
company's.
BBC Films UK Film Council Shine Limited
• The film reserved £450,000 at the UK box office. This was so
successful due to the fact they didn’t specify their cinemas they
broadcasted it to urban multiplexes.
9. Dexter Fletcher:
• Dexter fletcher had help from Entertainment Film Distribution and The
British Film Fund so that he had the finance to film and produce his films.
Having these company's to help came sales, distributors and helping to find
talent within actors and actresses.
• He wanted to send his films rocket high and have the whole of Scotland and
Britain watching his films.
• Dexter Fletchers popular film Sunshine on Leith was distributed by
Entertainment Film Distributors UK. It debuted a number 3 in the UK box
office with £770,000 in its first week.
