American countries. A single place where administrators, faculty and
students can find quality resources to support their work and/or studies
-OER, OCWs, MOOCs, Distance Learning programs, Certifications,
Accreditations, Scholarships, etc. Using VirtualEduca's extended

20. Why Open MOOCs?
• Many members want to participate but don’t have the
opportunity, or want a test before committing fully
• Opportunity for us to leverage existing OER and add
benefits of interaction and data collection offered by
edX platform
• Combine open enrollment with open content to create
a diverse array of Open MOOCs
• edX uses open source software
22. Survey with Pilot OpenMOOC developers
• Time commitment is significant:
• > 40 hours Instructional Designers
• > 40 hours faculty time
• > 40 hours course facilitators
• Didn’t redo video: 10-20 hours video editing
• New video: >100 hours shooting and editing
• Project managers 10 hours
• High level administrators 10 hours
23. Survey with Pilot OpenMOOC developers
• Re-use of OER varied
• Range was 25% - 100% new content
• Lower costs = higher amount of OER used
• New content was primarily new video made
specifically for edX MOOC format
• All had to create some new content to fit the
platform and requirements
24. Survey with Pilot OpenMOOC developers
• Cost depends on the extent of
modification of materials
• Range was US$6,500 - $100,000
• Inclusive of staff time & resources
• Extensive video work was most expensive
• Increased requirements by edX has increased
some time and costs
25. OECx impact on OEC
• Format of existing OER has a big impact on
how well it will incorporate into edX
• Process is involved and evolving
• Time for OEC staff on the basics of each
MOOC was much higher than expected (40+
hours per MOOC, no course development)
• We will need to cover staff costs to continue
– would like your comments
