This document provides an overview of mixed-methods research. It defines mixed-methods research as involving both quantitative and qualitative research methods in a single study to provide a more complete understanding than either method alone. It discusses the history and examples of mixed-methods research in education. There are different approaches to mixed-methods research, including exploratory, explanatory, and triangulation designs which differ in the sequence of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Mixed-methods research combines the strengths of obtaining both numerical statistical data and narratives to explore relationships between variables. However, it is more time-consuming and expensive than a single method approach.
