3. WHAT IS BIM?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an
intelligent 3D model-based process that gives
architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC)
professionals the insight and tools to more
efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage
buildings and infrastructure.

15. CASE STUDY : THE RECONSTRUCTION OF NOTRE-DAME
The cathedral's construction began in 1160 and was
largely complete by 1260, The cathedral is one of
the most widely recognized symbols of the city of
Paris and the French nation.
While undergoing renovation and restoration, the
roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15
April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the
cathedral sustained serious damage, including the
destruction of the flèche(the timber spirelet over
the crossing) and most of the lead-covered wooden
roof above the stone vaulted ceiling.
Following the fire, many proposals were made for
modernizing the cathedral's design. However, on 16
July 2019 the FrenchParliament passed a law
requiring that it be rebuilt exactly as it appeared
before the fire. The government of France hopes the
reconstruction can be completed by Spring 2024, in
time for the opening of the 2024 Summer
Olympics in Paris.
16. LIDAR (light detection and ranging) is an optical remote-sensing technique that
uses laser light to densely sample the surface of the earth, producing highly
accurate x,y,z measurements. Lidar, primarily used in airborne laser mapping
applications, is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to traditional surveying
techniques such as photogrammetry. Lidar produces mass point cloud datasets that
can be managed, visualized, analyzed, and shared using ArcGIS.
17. HOW WAS THIS DONE?
Laser scanning, as it’s used in construction, is a 3-step
process:
Scan - Using a 3D laser scanner, millions of measurement points are rapidly collected
and saved. Once measured, these points resemble a “cloud” and provide an accurate 3D
representation of the area that was scanned. To create a point cloud of a large, irregular
space like Notre Dame, the scanner would have been set in several different locations,
creating overlapping point clouds that would need to be combined.
Register - Once a series of point clouds is uploaded from the 3D laser
scanner, scanning software can then “stitch” together the individual scans into one
composite 3D point cloud model. This is called “registering” the scans. Once registered,
the composite 3D point cloud model can be either exported to other applications as-is
or detailed using modelling software to create intelligent modelled objects.
Detail - Detailing a 3D point cloud model involves using detailing software to change
the various components the scanner captured into data-rich BIM components that can
then be manipulated in a thousand ways to inform construction documentation,
fabrication, erection and installation, and much more.
18. OTHER APPLICATIONS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
The evolution process of BIM-GIS integration in the AEC industry reveals that
BIM-GIS integration has moved from simple cases to deep considerations and
complex applications.
•Monitor Your Workforce Project Using Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS
•A mainstream of integration methods is extracting BIM data to the GIS context
•Enhanced BIM-GIS integration can optimize the waste reuse and recycling to
minimize waste materials, overall energy cost, demolition time and impacts on
the surrounding environment.
•Sensing Site Change
•Optimizing Infrastructure Operation Intelligence
•Revit models can now be incorporated in arcGIS Pro 2.3
