AAM Group presentation at the Esri User Conference 2016.
The presentation discusses the convergence of GIS, CAD and BIM and how this aids in Urban Planning and Management
5. WHAT IS BIM?
• Isit software?
• Isit process?
• Isit technology?
• Something else?
6. US National Building Standard: https://www.nationalbimstandard.org/faqs
WHAT IS BIM?
Building Information Modelling (BIM)is a digital representationof
physical and functional characteristicsofa facility.
A BIMis a sharedknowledge resourcefor information about a facility
forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as
existing from earliest conception to demolition.
7. What is BIM to you?
• BIM is different things to different people
• Surveyor
• Architects
• Civil Engineers
• Facilities Management
• Financiers

11. GIS
• The geospatial community is becoming increasingly more
aware of 3D technology
• RealisingLaurie Jordan's vision of a smart 3D image
• It is used for 3D cadaster, digital terrain models, architectural
and engineering design and modelling entire cities in 3D.
13. GIS, 3D and BIM
• 3D is clearlygrowing in importance within the Esri platform
• Its becominga standard across the platform
• Ourclients areinterested too
• Wehave workedon numerous projects where there is a 2D/3D/BIM
crossover
15. GIS and BIM - What's the Difference?
• Rangesfromglobalscale datadownto
building level
• Typicallynottothe level ofdetailofBIM
• Providescontextthatis generally notin
BIM
• Normallyin a knownlocation!
• TypicallyBuilding orCampusLeveldata
• Highly detaileddatawhich is normally
very precise
• Existin isolation
• Frequentlyin paperspaceor anunknown

• Canbebuilt offa sharedlibraryof

16. Things are Changing
• Silos
• Analog
• Reactive
• Error prone
• Disconnected
• 2d
• Paper(do weeven remember
this?)
• Digital
• Collaborative
• Proactive
• Predictable
• Interoperable
• Intelligent 3D models
OLD WAY NEW WAY
22. Getting BIM into GIS
• Standards based formats arewell supported
• Conversion tools are available in both Esri Data Interoperability & FME
• Process is relatively simple, although getting the best results is complex!
Data Interoperability
23. Model workflow
1. RVT 2. IFC
3. Multipatch
4. 3D (OBJ)
6. Work in
ArcPro
5. Work in
Sketchup
Blender
7. Publish to I3S
Delivery Model
GISD Ready
25. Caveats
• Correct units (m) not mm
• Object centered model
• Correct scale 1:1 in all axis
• check for floating point precision errors (rounding
errors)
• Trim stuff you don’t need
