The document discusses how a media product represents and reflects its target audience. The target audience is described as people aged 16-30 with an interest in alternative music and fashion who could be described as "hipsters." Key aspects that reflect this audience include a simple black, yellow, and white color scheme representing Madchester culture; a layout that looks different from other magazines; styling the models in clothes and hair styles emulating Ian Brown and Shaun Ryder to look alternative; and poses that look moody but strong and laid back, representing hipsters. In conclusion, the document discusses how research and planning were used to reflect the target audience as well as possible through the magazine's style and content.

Targeting Hipsters
1. How does you media product
represent particular social
groups?
2. Who is the target audience?
My target audience would be people aged from 16-30 of any gender.
They would have to have an interest in an alternative style of music and
fashion. They could be classed as ‘Hipster’ – which is a category from
UKTribes, I got this from my research. They may fit this label as they
have a different type of style to other people. They would listen to music
both new and old, examples of these are Oasis, Happy Monday, Beady
Eye, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Smiths exc… They could
come from any class lower/middle or upper. This is because the style
which they could emulate involves brands which can be very expensive
such as the Beady Eye Black Label but there are also shops (such as
Afflecks and Wardrobe) where clothes are cheaper which still suit the
style. Although this isn’t the particular social group I was aiming for, I
would still expect my magazine to draw people in who are around the
age of 40/50 who were part of the Madchester era and want to have a
look back on it.
3. How did I reflect my target audience?
I reflected my target audience throughout my entire magazine. This
was done so a pristine and simple layout on every page. There are 3
main colours Black, Yellow and White. This represents the Madchester
culture and this could stick out to the consumers as something that they
like. I think that my magazine is laid out well and is very stylish – again
what the consumers may like. I feel that my magazine looks different
from some of the other magazines available such as Q, Kerrang and
Clash – this could attract the consumer even more as the magazine
looks alternative, which is what ‘Hipsters’ like. I also dressed my
models in clothes which the social group I was aiming for would like,
such as Ian Brown style Parka's and baggy T-shirts. I also styled Luke's
Hair in a Shaun Ryder type of way, this is alternative which could attract
the social group I was trying to target. My magazine will still reflect
other audiences as I do not want to single just one social group out –
this will make it a good read for everyone.
4. Continued…
I feel that throughout my magazine the poses/expressions which
my models pull represent the Hipster social group well. They
look sort of moody but their pose is also strong, this would
attract Hipsters as they look different and alternative which is
what they aspire to be like. As well as this I think they also look
fairly laid back and chilled which again represents the said social
group well. To conlude, I think that I have reflected my target
audience as well as possible by using style models as guides
however then using information from my research and planning
to help me out.
