Evaluation Question 4
1.
2.
My magazine is targeted at men and women aged 16 – 24 who listen to or
are lovers of Indie and Alternative rock music.
My magazine, AlterNation, is also targeted at people who are interested in
all things new and upcoming in the music industry which means that it can
also gather the attention of other people outside of the target age group.
I gathered information on my target audience by creating a survey using
Survey Monkey, that asked the users questions that defined their taste in
the music industry and how they would want an Alternative and Indie rock
magazine to look and what content would be inside it.
I always wanted to create an Indie and Alternative rock magazine from
the start but the survey supported that idea by giving me insight into the
minds of my Target Audience.
3.
The genre of my magazine, Indie/Alternative rock, is often
associated with going to gigs and live events, partying, bold and
bright colours, and being unique, etc.
I wanted my magazine to include these associations as to build a
connection between both the magazine and its quite niche fan
base as this would bring it a wider and stronger readership.
I incorporated these associations in my article, contents page and
front cover by having the main story of the article about my bands
antics when they went partying and to live gigs. My front cover uses
bright and bold colours on it to attract readers to the
magazine, and my contents page shows the band, Urban
Jungle, wearing unique and “in fashion” clothing.
4.
AlterNation represents people in todays society who like to be on top of
the latest trends in fashion, technology, games, movies and music, etc.
The social group I am trying to attract like to make themselves as
different and unique from everyone around them as they can, this can
be by wearing different or unique clothing, having body modifications
on display and have a general neat and new vibe around them.
Their lifestyle choices are also heavily influenced by the band/artists
they listen to in their music taste because this makes them feel like they
have a closer connection to their idols and gives them the feeling of
acceptance.
In today‟s society they may be more commonly known as „Hipsters‟ –
people who like to be the centre of attention for their unique style and
indie vibe around them.
5. Since my magazine is aimed at a specific genre of music, those with
different tastes or styles in music have been excluded from my
magazine because they do not share common interests with my target
audience.
Social groups of people such as „Punks‟ will not enjoy the same variety
of music in the magazine because they prefer rock and punk-rock
music instead of my chosen genre, Indie and Alternative rock.
This could cause problems for my magazine because it will
automatically give itself an even smaller, niche, audience and
therefore, a smaller readership.
To overcome this problem I may include some bands or artists of other
genres in the Up and Coming section of my magazine because it is
there to promote new artists, regardless of their music genre. This could
help by attracting lovers of other types of music to my magazine just to
see a review of their favourite groups, etc.
6.
In conclusion my magazine, AlterNation, represents a niche social
group but has elements in the magazine that will attract other sorts
of people to the magazine and its content. AlterNation includes
their hobbies, interests and lifestyle choices into the magazine in
order to make the target audience want to buy the magazine.
