Introduction
๏‚ง Coal fly ash, an industrial by product of coal combustion thermal
power plant is considered as a hazardous material and its
improper disposal has become an environmental issue.
๏‚ง The global average utilization of fly ash was estimated nearly at
25% and it is expected to at 75% of the total fly ash production.
๏‚ง Brick is one of the oldest construction material and is responsible
for the top soil extraction and resulting the depletion of the
virgin resources for firming. Realizing the consequence Chinese
government has banned the use of fired clay brick (Lingling et al.
, 2005)

๏‚ง Bangladesh is called upon the land of a farmers as a major
portion of its population depends on the crop cultivation,
consequently it needs more cultivable lands.
๏‚ง Use of clay burned brick as a construction material is popular
in Bangladesh and as a result pressure is increasing on the
agricultural land.
๏‚ง Accordingly there is a need for an efficient sustainable
alternative.

๏‚ง Current fly ash production of Bangladesh stands at 52000
metric tons per annum, which is expected to 377000 metric tons
per annum by the end of the year 2018 (Tamim et al., 2013).
๏‚ง Disposal system of this fly ash is not abide by any law in
Bangladesh. Fly ash is known to pollute air and water, and
stands for the cause of respiratory diseases when inhaled.
๏‚ง A viable option for bulk utilization of fly ash could be in the
production of structural brick containing fly ash as a major
ingredients.

๏‚ง Though fly ash utilization as partial and full replacement of
clay brick manufacturing is presented in several literatures.
Most of the cases specimens are molded in laboratory and then
burnet in furnace. But in practical field that much attention is
not paid.
๏‚ง Therefore, present study is concerned to utilize fly ash as
partial replacement of clay in making brick in commercial
brick field in Bangladesh. Thus the specimen are prepared in
real operational factory.

Conclusions
๏‚ง Size and shape of the fly ash brick found quite same as the
normal clay brick and no distortion due to fly ash adding is
observed. Fly ash brick are found to be sufficiently hard, as
scratching by the finger nail on the surface left no impression on
it as compared to the normal brick.
๏‚ง The compressive strength of clay bricks are found to be 21.6
MPa and for fly ash brick is found to be 19.6 MPa at 20%
replacement. Which is maximum for fly ash brick.
๏‚ง The average absorbed moisture content for clay brick is found to
be 15.34% and for fly ash brick is found more than 20%.

๏‚ง The Efflorescence for all brick tested are found to be nil and
Los-Angeles Abrasion Value in all cases of fly ash brick are
greater than normal clay bricks and less than 50% except one
case (50% fly ash content). That indicates the aggregate
extracted from fly ash bricks can be used as a good building
and road material.
๏‚ง As the specific gravity of coarse aggregate decreased with the
increase of fly ash, this fly ash brick can fulfill the requirement
where brick like light weight building materials are refurbished
(i.e. partition wall)

๏‚ง Above all use of fly ash for brick production can be potential
source of raw material as well as healthy disposal solution of
produced fly ash in Bangladesh. As it is seen these goal can be
achieved without altering the current brick manufacturing
process practiced in Bangladesh.

Introduction ๏‚ง Coal fly ash, an industrial by product of coal combustion thermal power plant is considered as a hazardous material and its improper disposal has become an environmental issue. ๏‚ง The global average utilization of fly ash was estimated nearly at 25% and it is expected to at 75% of the total fly ash production. ๏‚ง Brick is one of the oldest construction material and is responsible for the top soil extraction and resulting the depletion of the virgin resources for firming. Introduction (Contd.) ๏‚ง Bangladesh is called upon the land of a farmers as a major portion of its population depends on the crop cultivation, consequently it needs more cultivable lands. ๏‚ง Use of clay burned brick as a construction material is popular in Bangladesh and as a result pressure is increasing on the agricultural land. ๏‚ง Accordingly there is a need for an efficient sustainable alternative.   • 7. ๏‚ง Current fly ash production of Bangladesh stands at 52000 metric tons per annum, which is expected to 377000 metric tons per annum by the end of the year 2018 (Tamim et al., 2013). ๏‚ง Disposal system of this fly ash is not abide by any law in Bangladesh. Fly ash is known to pollute air and water, and stands for the cause of respiratory diseases when inhaled. ๏‚ง A viable option for bulk utilization of fly ash could be in the production of structural brick containing fly ash as a major ingredients. Most of the cases specimens are molded in laboratory and then burnet in furnace. But in practical field that much attention is not paid. ๏‚ง Therefore, present study is concerned to utilize fly ash as partial replacement of clay in making brick in commercial brick field in Bangladesh.   • 17. Conclusions ๏‚ง Size and shape of the fly ash brick found quite same as the normal clay brick and no distortion due to fly ash adding is observed. Fly ash brick are found to be sufficiently hard, as scratching by the finger nail on the surface left no impression on it as compared to the normal brick. ๏‚ง The compressive strength of clay bricks are found to be 21.6 MPa and for fly ash brick is found to be 19.6 MPa at 20% replacement. Which is maximum for fly ash brick. ๏‚ง The average absorbed moisture content for clay brick is found to be 15.34% and for fly ash brick is found more than 20%. Conclusions (Contd.) ๏‚ง The Efflorescence for all brick tested are found to be nil and Los-Angeles Abrasion Value in all cases of fly ash brick are greater than normal clay bricks and less than 50% except one case (50% fly ash content). That indicates the aggregate extracted from fly ash bricks can be used as a good building and road material. ๏‚ง As the specific gravity of coarse aggregate decreased with the increase of fly ash, this fly ash brick can fulfill the requirement where brick like light weight building materials are refurbished (i.e. partition wall) Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology
  • 19. Conclusions (Contd.) ๏‚ง Above all use of fly ash for brick production can be potential source of raw material as well as healthy disposal solution of produced fly ash in Bangladesh.
