This talk will show the kitchen of Pharo, what we are working on and what we are planning for the future (and how we plan to achieve them). Bio: Esteban Lorenzano, 43 years old. He studied -and let unfinished- Computer Sciences at Universidad de Buenos Aires, and worked since 1994 in several object oriented technologies (Delphi, C++, Java), where he scaled from “Junior Programmer” to “Senior Architect”. On 2007 he and two friends began a new start-up, Smallworks, an enterprise for agile developments, centered on Smalltalk. Currently, he is working in the RMoD INRIA team in Lille, France, as core developer for Pharo.

JavaScript is finding its way further and further out of the browser. Only a couple of years ago, if someone had said they wanted to build robots only using JS you'd think they were crazy. Having tried it at the time those naysayers were correct - it was a disaster. Recently, particularly as a result of the nodebots project, JS Robotics has started to come of age and it's now possible to build simple robots using JavaScript for the majority of the stack - everything from control and sensing to motors to lights, AI and computer vision. This talk will give an overview of what's currently possible, where the current gotchas are, how to get started and have some interactive elements that can be played with during or after the session. If we need to receive IoT events from sensors, how do I implement an MQTT endpoint? Kafka is a clever way to do this. And how do I process the data? Kafka? Spark? Rabbit ?. Status of WebRTC across Asia by Alan Quayle, and a group of leading experts contributing to the reality, not the hype, of WebRTC. It’s 2020, WebRTC (Web Real Time Communications) became known in 2011 when Google open sourced intellectual property it had bought in previous years. Gossip about those acquisitions began in 2009. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) was already laying the groundwork with Opus (voice codec) officially in 2010, and back in 2009 the discussion process started that became WebRTC. It’s been roughly one decade. Did WebRTC change everything? Is WebRTC everywhere? WebRTC myths and misconceptions. Understanding the two components of WebRTC, the open source project, and the standards track. Reviewing the achievements of WebRTC across Asia. Understanding why ‘WebRTC’ companies such as Vidyo and Tokbox did not achieve big exits. What is the current status of WebRTC, where are the standards, where is the innovation edge? Graphic drivers and their related code are an essential component in every modern operating system. This particular component involves especially complex logic and a huge amount of code, simply because it must handle equally complex tasks. As we know from history and experience huge and complex code is often also a security risk. Last but not least, in almost all the popular modern operating system, graphics code and logic is running in a highly privileged context such as the kernel, or even in a higher context, such as VMWare graphics component, which essentially implements your graphic card outside the guest into a host process. Any mistake made into this highly privileged code can lead to a fatal outcome, especially considering that it is often reachable from interesting sandboxes, such as the browser ones. We will go through the internals for various graphic systems, to show similarities and differences, such as windows heart of graphics aka win32k, then OSX/iOS IOKit, and finally, WMWare emulated GPU graphic subsystem. We can then switch gear and showcase some vulnerabilities in these scenarios, discuss effective fuzzing methodologies both specific to a particular target and generic principles of fuzzing graphic subsystems as well.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems.
