The tense of the verb identifies when
something occurs.



      Past, Present,
       and Future
Present Tense- something is
    happening right now

Mom cooks dinner.
My brother eats
everything.
Past Tense-
something already
   happened

Mom cooked
dinner.
My brother ate
everything.
Future Tense- something will
        happen later

Mom will cook
dinner.
My brother will eat
everything.
Present Tense
To make most verbs
      singular, add –s

• run-runs
• eat-eats
• Jump-jumps
To make a verb that ends in s, x, z,
    ch, or sh singular, add –es

• watch-watches
• mix-mixes
• crash-crashes
To make a verb that ends in a
consonant and a y singular, change the
        y to an i and add –es
• cry-cries
• fly-flies
• dry-dries
When the subject is plural, do not
   change the form of the verb


• hurry-hurry
Past Tense
For most verbs, add –ed

• Yell-yelled
• walk-walked
• cook-cooked
When a short verb ends in a
  consonant, double the
 consonant and add –ed

• bat-batted
• slip-slipped
• chop-chopped
When a verb ends in –e,
drop the e and add –ed
• hope-hoped
• taste-tasted
• rinse-rinsed
When a verb ends in a
consonant and a –y, change the
     y to an i and add –ed

• try-tried

• pry-pried
Use the basic form of the verb with the
