The Most Wonderful Part Of My Life
"Having two beautiful children is the most wonderful part of my life." Bruce David Morrow, my father is so proud of my brother and I. The way to
describe him is kindhearted, caring, loving, and patient, all great qualities of a father. He was born on July 20, 1951 in Portsmouth hospital and grew
up in the town of Kittery, Maine as an only child. He went to Northeastern University graduating with bachelors of science in mechanical engineering.
My father worked on the shipyard as a mechanical engineer for 37ВЅ years before retiring at the age of 63. This past summer he has since gone back to
the shipyard doing part–time consulting. Bruce is 6'1" and 210 pounds. My father has thick salt and pepper grey hair and mustache, hazel eyes, and
several wrinkles in his later years. His skin is always keeps an olive color year–round and he gets quite a tan from all his golfing in the summer.
Historical My father lived in Kittery, Maine his entire childhood other than going to college. Bruce as an only child and his parents were Della and
Norman Morrow. His parents grew up in the depression so they were very frugal with their money. He moved to Connecticut in June of 1974 for his
first job and moved back October 1978. Bruce stayed in the area after moving back in 1978. His first car was a 1965 Triumph Spitfire which he bought
at 18 years old but he got his license at 16 years old. He has always had an interest in sport cars. When he got his license, gas was only 29 cents a
gallon! I

Contrasting Old Mother Savage and The Tell-Tale Heart Essay
Contrasting Old Mother Savage and The Tell–Tale Heart
Writers may use different techniques to get the same effect out of the audience. In the short story, "Old Mother Savage" by Guy Du Maupassant, a
tragic story of a woman who losses everything is told. The story is scary in that it has an ending that one would not expect. Also, it can be looked at as
a sad story because the mother seems to be sad throughout the entire story. At the end theonly thing that she has to be satisfied about is that her
murdering four young men can make other women feel how she felt when she found out about the death of her son. This story can be compared to
Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell–Tale Heart", when you talk about the strategies that both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the author's first attempt at making the audience have sympathy for the woman. In our modern day society, we would think that this woman is
abandoned and maybe might need some kind of physiological attention. This is a contrast to Poe who wanted people to get the impression that the
speaker in his story was a mad man. They both seem to want you to have a kind heart when thinking about the two, however, Poes' character dismisses
his credibility when he starts to talk about his reasoning behind his killing.
The story goes on to say that the woman was forced to care for four young men who were enemies that took over the city. But the woman does not
seem to mind because they treat her with a great deal of respect and they also provide her with companionship. One day she receives a letter telling
her that her son was killed: "She did not cry. She stood motionless, stricken, dazed so that she could feel no more" (Du Maupassant, 3). One can argue
that this is the point were the woman's' feelings leave and the only thing in her heart is revenge. This is the turning point in the story and at this point
the reader is worried about what the woman will now do. When she returns home, she makes the rabbit that the soldiers have captured for the day. At
this point not a word is said about what the woman is planning on doing, which leaves the audience in suspense. When killing the rabbit the speakers
says that she could see "...her big son...covered in

A Comparison of Seamus Heaney's Poem Digging and The song...
I have looked at the poem 'Digging' by Seamus Heaney. The poem is about the poet digging into his past and appears to be a modest poem. The
"nicking and slicing neatly" that Heaney says in his poem can also apply to the crafting of a poem. Heaney seems unhappy and distanced from his
farming family roots however he shows a good amount of admiration for farming men. Heaney shows the skill and dignity of labour. The expertise is
rather admired than the strength and the technique is very precisely explained. He constantly has memories of common places, which very few people
would notice, but Heaney thinks that these memories should be recognised. He is frustrated at how different he is to his ... Show more content on

"And then I must scrub and bake and sweep,
Till stars are beginning to blink and peep."
In this quote the tone of her voice would be low and depressed because she must scrub and sweep till stars begin to blink and peep which means she
has to work till late at night.
The young people in 'The song of the old mother' do not care for what the old mother does for them but Heaney is determined to dig with his pen and
remember his roots.
"And the young lie long and dream in their bed."
This quote also has another meaning, for this comparison the quote means that while the young lie long and dream they still take granted for what the
old mother does for them.
"Over his shoulder, going down and down for the good turf. Digging."
This quote is showing that he is digging and digging into his past and trying to remember his roots.
In 'The song of the old mother' the structure of the poem looks tight like her life could have been as in those days women weren't allowed to do much
apart from cook clean and look after the kids.
The structure of 'Digging' looks spaced out and free. This is how his life style could have been or the spaced out structure could represent the space
and freedom you get from living on a farm. The structure could also represent the feeling you get when you have a vast

Imagery In Beowulf
The Old–English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066 by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are
persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo–Saxon period in which the story takes place
bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due
to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. A truly remarkable feat is how the words and actions of
this poem are put to life in the movie. Though remarkable, the cinema didn't exactly correlate with the poem. In fact the integrity of the poem almost
seems diminished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the feast, a Dane named Unferth, envious of his kinsmen's admiration of Beowulf, begins to taunt the Geat. He claims that Beowulf once lost a
swimming match against Breca and that Beowulf will meet with defeat for a second time when he faces Grendel in the mead–hall. Mentioning the
swimming race reassures that indeed Beowulf is indeed mortal and capable of defeat comparatively than displaying him as immortal. When Grendel
arrives to slay Hrothgar's men, Beowulf battles with Grendel and manages to amputate Grendel's arm and shoulder to which then Beowulf drapes his
arm from the rafters of the great mead hall. "The victory, for the proof, hanging

Parent Child Relationships in Before You Were Mine, Kid, On My First Sonne, and The Song Of The Old Mother
All of the poems are about emotions and parent child relationships. In
Before You Were Mine, the girl idolises and loves her mother. Whereas the man in Kid feels angry towards his father, and resents him too. In the
poem On My First Sonne, the father loves his son a lot and feels grief for his dead son. Which is different from The Song Of The Old
Mother as in this the mother is angry and annoyed at her children. I shall look for similarities and differences in the parent child relationships that are
in all four of the poems.
The use of structure in Kid shows the past and present in a chronological way, it's like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, "...the fire flicker and glow" this shows the start of her day. Then the middle shows she works hard "...I must scrub and bake and
sweep." Finally, the end of her day "...fire gets feeble and cold." This is effective because it shows that she is a hard working mother.
This is also similar to On My First Sonne as it is also one long verse. Lines one to four show the meaning to loss of his son "Farwell, thou child of
my right hand, and joy." Then the middle lines show the father asking questions full of grief "For why will man lament the state he should envie?"
Finally, he accepts his loss "...all his vows be such." The themes in Before You Were Mine are about growing up and looking back with memories and
thinking of all the positive things which happened. For example, "Cha cha cha! You'd teach me the steps..." This gives the impression that there was a
strong bonding between the mother and child because there was a lot of parent love. This is similar to On My First Sonne because the parent child
relationship is full of love. For instance it says, "Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy." This shows that there is a lot of love and care from
the parent towards his son. His son was his pride. I think that these two poems have a strong parent child relationship, because both of the parents
show a lot of love and affection towards there children. This makes me as a reader feel

Old Mother Hubbard Company Case Study
Looking at the Old Mother Hubbard Company
The Hubbard & Son Bakery opened in 1873, in Gloucester, MA. The original Old Mother Hubbard dog biscuits were actually developed as a snack for
fishermen. Since 1926, the brand has specialized in all–natural, oven–baked dog treats. Jim Scott, Sr. purchased the company in 1961. Eventually, the
headquarters were moved to Lowell, MA, and the WellnessВ® pet food lines were developed.
Berwind Continues To Buy And Merge Natural Pet Food Companies

Pros
The WellPet website says they have, "the most comprehensive quality assurance program in the industry." They say they hold their suppliers to
standards over and above those from the FDA.
None of WellPet's products include artificial flavors or preservatives.
Cons
The WellPet website says they test everything to make sure its "safe, pure and balanced," but I have doubts that Old Mother Hubbard Dog Treats are
biologically appropriate for carnivores, which seems to contradict that statement. They're made almost exclusively from carbohydrates, and there are
very few wheat–free options. That's a common allergen for many

Marijuana Stops Child 's Severe Seizures And New Mothers...
There are many different methods of healing. Methods vary from osteopathy, the most common form of medicine, and less conventional forms such
as folk healing, faith healing, chiropractors, aromatherapy, Ayurveda and etc. (Cockerham p. 312). Two articles "Marijuana Stops Child's Severe
Seizures" and "New Mothers and Old Asian Customs" demonstrate different forms of healing methods and the steps it takes to become healthy
again. The article "Marijuana Stops Child's Severe Seizures" by Saundra Young reveals an unusual solution to a child's illness. Starting from a
young age, Charlotte Figi started getting frequent seizures. The seizures lasted from two to four hours and often required Charlotte to be
hospitalized. After doing several tests, the doctors were not able to find the exact cause for Charlotte's seizures. They eventually diagnosed Charlotte
with Dravet Syndrome. Following the diagnosis, the doctors decided to start treatment which proved to be unsuccessful. The next step they took was
to implement a ketogenic diet which worked for two years with some side effects. Finally, Charlotte's parents decided to try using medical marijuana
that has low THC levels. The medical marijuana used proved to be successful in reducing Charlotte's seizures drastically. When I first read this article,
I found it very informative because I did not know what Dravet Syndrome was. I learned that kids as young as three months old can get seizures. I felt
relieved that the parents did

Michael Wolff's Essay 'The Ending No One Wants'
Many people fear the inevitable, old age. No one wants to depend on anyone after they have lived life to the fullest of their potential and have
become wise beyond their years. No one teaches you how to prepare your life for old age, how to shop for long term care, what kind of groceries to
buy to keep your cognitive mind and strength going or what kind of exercises to do to keep your body strong. Unfortunately, there is no getting
old class taught in school to prepare people for the damage time does on their heart, body, and soul. Once the inevitable comes people are left
depending on relatives or advocates to make decisions for them. The article "The ending no one wants" speaks about how a man in his 50's is left
caring for his mother along with this siblings. The article made me feel sad because here you have a man in his 50's who is trying to enjoy his life

According to ((Sutin, Wethington, et al., 2010) the events that individuals define as stressful and how they cope with these events change across the
lifespan ( Aldwin, Sutton, et al., 1996). Starting in late adolescence, the ability to reconstrue negative experiences as positive develops, but it is not
until young adulthood that this experienced wisdom is translated into a touchstone for coping with future situations ( Bluck & GlГјck, 2004).
The most surprisingly response in the interview process was the interviewee's ability to remain powerless and come to terms about death. He spoke
about what he wanted his son and daughter to do when the time came when he passed on in this life, He accepts death and knows that it is inevitable
that it cannot be avoided no matter who you are. He keeps his faith in God to help deal with the end of life situations. Religious affiliations and
psychological aids are helpful in handling depression and may improve the quality of life of aging individuals (Butler, Fujii, et al., 2011).
The birth of his children and grandchildren played a major part in the interviewee's life. While interviewing he always said family first. I gathered the
impression that he is a very family orientated person. In the bedrooms, living room, and hallway of the interviewee's

Courage In Beowulf
Beowulf Beowulf is an epic poem about a man who took on many challenges during the Anglo– Saxon period. The Anglo– Saxons helped create Old
English, and they created this epic poem called Beowulf. In the epic poem of Beowulf, Beowulf is a mix of a folk story and Christian traditions by
faith, loyalty and courage. Beowulf is a Christian and folk story by his loyalty. Beowulf is the king of the Geats (Beowulf's clan) and when the king
of the Danes, Hrothgar, asked for help, Beowulf "would sail across the sea to Hrothgar ... Now when he was needed"(116). Beowulf is very loyal to
the King because he is the only man who wants to fight Grendel for the King, knowing that all the other men have failed. Beowulf has also shown

OLD YELLER
This was one of my favorite books during my childhood days. The book is a classic, and Disney later made it into a motion picture. the story''s
climax develops quickly by telling stories and adventures of a boy named Travis and his old stray yellow dog named Yeller. At the introduction of the
book Travis is plowing corn in the garden when an old yellow darts bye and causes the mule to jump. He chases the dog out of the garden and curses
at him. Then a few days later the stray dog ate some of the deer meat that was very important for the family''s survival. Travis was very angered and
threatened to kill the mischievious yellow dog, but his younger brother, Arliss, would not allow this.

Travis then began to run and shout at the two fighting animals. The bear tucked it''s tail and left. Old Yeller had saved the life of Arliss and they were all
very appreciative of what Yeller had done.
One of the next highlights in the book is when Old Yeller knocks down Rose, "the milk cow." Travis and Old Yeller were out in the woods looking
for Rose because she had been gone for three days without a trace. Rose had been expecting to give birth at any time and went off by herself to do
this. Travis finally located Rose and she had already given birth to the calf. Travis chased after the calf to lift it up. While attempting to do this
Rose charged towards him. It was at that time that Travis began to realize what a great dog he really had. Old Yeller dashed and knocked down
Rose then as she charged time and again at Yeller the dog tripped her up several times. Later on that day while Travis was milking Rose she kept
kicking the milk bucket over and would not allow Travis to milk her. In order to put a stop to this incident Travis called over Old Yeller to keep
Rose in line. Old Yeller stood directly in front of Rose and thrashed forward staring at her. The heifer was so frightened that she did not even try to
budge.
The final adventure of Old Yeller that I would like to portray is very tragic and sad. It begins with Rose contracting a disease called hydrophobia. This
is an extremely fatal disease which brings fourth foaming at the

Mistreatment In The Short StoryThe Old Grandfather And The...
Mistreatment Do you respect your elders? The Wise Old Woman is an elderly character from the short story "The Wise Old Woman" retold by
Yoshiko Uchida. The old grandfather, also referred to as the old man, is an elderly character from the short story "The Old Grandfather and His Little
Grandson" retold by Leo Tolstoy. Although The Wise Old Woman and the old grandfather are both mistreated, they are disrespected because of
different circumstances, but respond to their mistreatment similarly. The Wise Old Woman lives with herson, the farmer, in a small village in the
western hills of Japan. The young lord of this village does not want old residents in his village. In lines 3 and 4, the young lord says "I have no use for
old people in my village. They are neither useful or able to work for a living." To solve his conflict, the young lord gives an order. The young lord
states that command in lines 4, 5, and 6 saying, "I therefore decree that anyone over seventy–one must be banished from the village and left in the
mountains to die." The Wise Old Woman was treated very well by her son. Lines 16 and 17 say "They were poor, but the farmer was good to his
mother, and the two of them lived happily together." Once The Wise Old Woman turned 71, her son did not have the heart to take her to the
mountains and leave her to die. He knew that if he did not take his mother to the mountains, soldiers would be sent to take both him and his mother
to die. Lines 22, 23, 24, and 25 say "Each day the son put off telling his mother that he must take her into the mountains to die, but the people of the
village began to talk. The farmer knew that if he did not take his mother away soon the lord would send his soldiers and throw them both into a
dark dungeon to die a terrible death." The Wise Old Woman did not fight the young lord's decree. Lines 30 and 31 state, "And she did not seem
worried at all that she must go to the mountains to die." The old grandfather lived with his son, his son's wife, and his little grandson, Misha. The
grandfather's health was decreasing. Lines 1 and 2 state, "His legs could not carry him, his eyes could not see, his ears could not hear, and he was
toothless." His son and his son's wife make the old

Weapons In Beowulf
Throughout ninth century literature the emphasis placed upon weapons sheds light on their importance in Anglo–Saxon and Norse culture and society.
How swords are depicted in the epic Beowulf demonstrates the significant role they play in warriors' lives. The weapons show how technologically
advanced Nordic culture is, and the complexity of crafting them is hinted at in the riddles from The Exeter Book. The way in which weapons are
depicted in epics, poems, and charms conveys a key part of of Nordic society: warfare. Being victorious in war and fights plays an important role in
Nordic society. When the Anglo–Saxons as well as other tribes migrated from Europe to Britain, the "war bands" they formed were "led by war

Beowulf plunges Hrunting into Grendel's mother, but the sword "would not bite, [nor] harm her life" because "the edge failed" (27, Beowulf).
Not wasting anytime, Beowulf quickly seizes "an old sword made by the giants" and slays Grendel's mother (28, Beowulf). The Giant's sword is
depicted as possessing magical characteristics because it slayed a monster "too poisonous"(28, Beowulf). After Beowulf tells of his great defeat
another celebration is held at Heorot in honor of him. At the celebration, Beowulf is given weapons to reward his victory. Many years later, once
Beowulf is King, he learns of the horrible deeds the dragon committed. He bravely ventures with his men to slay the dragon. All except for one of
Beowulf's men flee when the see the dragon. However, Beowulf does not cower and run away, instead he begins to battle the dragon. Beowulf draws

Universal Themes
Braylin What do you think of when you hear the word "wise?" You might think of someone like Yoda from "Star Wars," or just anyone that's old in
general. Although Yoda and older people are both correct answers, if you thought of someone that possesses a lot of knowledge and experience, you
are in fact correct. Wisdom is something that people of old age often have because they've been through so many situations in life. The stories "The
Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson" and "The Wise Old Woman" both include characters that show wisdom throughout their stories. Both stories
also have universal themes. A universal theme is a theme that is shared in multiple stories and can be applied to our lives everyday. The universal
theme expressed in both of the stories is that you should treat everyone they way that you would like to be treated. Although the two stories include the
same theme, they both present it in different ways.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sharon Old Poem
Author Background:
Sharon Olds was born on November 19, 1942 and raised in Berkeley, California to a strict, religious family. Her father was abusive and her mother
was not protective; so much of her early life became characterized by extreme restrictions. After earning her BA from Stanford and her Ph.D from
Columbia, she began writing poetry free of traditional conventions. Thus, she was able to develop her own poetry style and explored personal topics
from family life to more taboo subjects such as sex. Across all subjects, her poetry is known for its accessibility to all audiences and its raw, honest
storytelling.
Paraphrase:
While I brush out our daughter's silky brown hair before the mirror, I see myself, a silver–haired servant behind her, and notice the grey hair gleaming
on my head. Why is it that parents begin to grow old just as their children begin to develop? As the fold in my neck becomes more noticeable, she
develops her curves; as my skin becomes dry and wrinkled, she blooms like a cactus flower. Just as the my fertility fades, hers is at its peak, abundant
with possibility. I brush her tangled, sweet–smelling hair at bedtime, and ponder upon the oldest story we have on our planet––the story of replacement.
Imagery:
Olds uses imagery in this poem to juxtapose the stages of life the narrator and her daughter are experiencing and to illuminate the effect of age upon the
body. She contrasts the daughter's "brown silken hair" with the narrator's greying hair

Review Of ' Old Mother Savage '
Assignment One The Question states: "Write an essay about SKILL in the story 'Old Mother Savage.' By 'skill' I mean both the skill and the
intelligence that the woman shows in doing what she does, and planning it, and also the skill and intelligence of the writer, de Maupassant. That
is to say, how well, and effectively, the writing works, and how it reaches the heart (if it does) and is real. Write as well and as intelligently as you
can, and please quote from the story in order to support the points that you make." The definition of Skill: "The ability to do something well;
expertise. A particular ability." The word skill encompasses a wide variety of meaning in its definition compared to how few words it contains. In
the following, I will describe some of the interesting examples of skill and lack of skill that I found throughout the story, Old Mother Savage. I
found these examples of skill in the narrator of the story; in the flashback storyteller, Serval; in the main character, Old Mother Savage; as well as in
the writer himself, Guy de Maupassant. The Story Narrator's Skill. At the very of the beginning of the story, the reader is greeted with a long
description of his surroundings and overall feelings about nature. This was coupled with the recollection that the narrator had when walking, where he

show that people work hard and do not see good reactions or feedback from anyone. In the passage "Andy Lovell" by T.S. Arthur a shoemaker,
Andy Lovell, lost the fun in his job and wanted to shut down his store. The story gives readers an idea that at some point he enjoyed making shoes
but now has lost the interest. In the article is says " Andy has lost interest in his shoemaking business after his three children died of scarlet fever."
Once a terrible accident happened to Mr. Lovell he no longer liked his job and wanted to quit. It also says " He had, no longer, any heart in his

The Wise Old Woman By Yoshiko Uchida
"The Wise Old Woman," is a folktale retold by Japanese–American author Yoshiko Uchida. The theme of the story is that if you banish all the elderly,
then you are banishing all the wisdom along with them. This helps the reader understand a larger lesson about life, human nature, and the experience
of a specific people or culture because it teaches about the ways a Japanese society acts. In this folktale, a young lord banishes all people over the age
of seventy–one to the mountains to die in the wilderness. A farmer decides to disobey the lord and hide his seventy–one year old mother in his house.
Later in the story, Lord Higa threatens to take over the village if they do not complete three difficult tasks given to them. The farmer's mother solves...

The young lord had issued the decree saying, "[The elderly] are neither useful nor able to work for a living. I therefore decree that anyone over
seventy–one must be banished from the village and left in the mountains to die," in paragraph 2. By doing this, the young lord had banished all of the
elderly, thereby banishing all of their wisdom along with it. Many of the villagers had disagreed about his edict, but nobody fought back, in fear that
they would be punished for rebelling. After all the elderly had been banished to the mountains, the lord had boasted about his village. "'What a fine
village of young, healthy, and hard–working people I have,'" he bragged. "'Soon it will be the finest village in all of Japan.'" The young farmer, on the
other hand, did not want his mother to die in the wilderness, so he hid her in a secret room in his house. "The farmer dug a deep hole in the floor of
his kitchen and made a small room where he could hide his mother," according to paragraph 17. She was kept hidden throughout the folktale, but when
her son, the farmer, had told her the problems in the village, she had easily solved them. Consequently, the characters' behavior helped develop the

The folk tale known as "The Wise Old Woman," retold by Yoshiko Uchida, conveys the very important message of respecting and listening to the
advice that the elderly have to offer, because their personal experiences and wisdom help us make the right choices. Is about an arrogant ruler who

When the arrogant rule finds out about this he has a sudden change of heart and new found respect for the elderly. Although the theme of this tale is
never explicitly, it can be inferred through painstakingly obvious clues placed within the text. Most clues can be found somewhat hidden in the
characters dialogue and actions and provide lots of evidence that supports the theme. A majority of these clues can be found in the conversations
between characters, and in some cases they practically say the theme of the story without ever directly stating exactly what it is. Like in most stories,
the theme is developed by characters and more importantly, the dialogue between them. The arrogant and cruel ruler is the person who starts the
development of the theme, since he created a law banning all of the villagers of the seventy–one or older. In paragraph 2, the lord states that he doesn't
need or want old people in the village because they are no able to contribute to the success or growth of the village. '"I have no use for old people in my
village," he said haughtily. "They are neither useful nor able to work

Analysis Of The Wise Old Women By Yoshiko Uchida
In "The Wise Old Women", a folktale retold by Yoshiko Uchida, there is a decree informing that anyone over the age of seventy
–one must be left in the
mountains to die. Generally, the decree was followed. However, a young farmer was done with the young lord's horrific decree. The young famer
just could not leave his mother, therefore he created a secret room to hide her in. On top of this, the young lord insisted on three arduous tasks. The
young farmer was informed about these tasks and simply asked his wise mother. At first, the young farmer had to take credit for his mother's wise
answers, but eventually the young farmer was able to tell the truth about his mother. When the lord found out, he was quite surprised but not angry.
He decided that elderly are very wise so they shouldn't be left to die. He also decided that the elderly should be treated with the respect that they
deserve. The theme of this story is respect and appreciation. An arrogant, young lord that had no respect for elders realized that respect is what he was

For example, at the beginning of the story, the young lord said, "I have no use for old people in my village." Throughout the story, the young lords
mind had obviously changed. In paragraph 46 the young lord said, "I have been very wrong." as well as, "And I must ask for the forgiveness of your
mother and all of my people." This is where you see that the mind of the lord is changing, which is showing you the theme. The young lord's dialogue
shows me that it is very unjust to treat the elderly without respect. What the characters say in the story strongly suggest the theme, which is that elders
should be appreciated and treated with

Examples Of Paganism In Beowulf
Beowulf is the oldest piece of surviving epic poems in the English Literature. It was written during the Anglo–Saxon's period, better known as "Old
English". Beowulf is about a warrior, who seeks fame by doing courageous deeds. He does this, by fighting three powerful foes: Grendel, Grendel's
mother, and a Dragon. These battle show that religions, Christianity and Paganism have been a significant theme and a part of Suffolk culture.
Beowulf's first enemy, the greedy monster known as "Grendel" symbolized sins within Christianity. According to page , lines 19–23, the epic states,
"He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of
Abel's death." Grendel has been compared as Cain and Abel's descendants, the story of Adam and Eve's oldest son killing his brother. This supports that
Suffolk's believed in Christianity, as they believed Grendel was the "darkest demon" that had been given birth to by the ultimate sinner. The influence
of Christianity amongst the Suffolk culture continues when Grendel is afraid of Hrothgar's throne. Lines 82–85 it is written, "...When the night hid
him, he never dared to touch king Hrothgar's glorious throne, protected by God– God, whose love Grendel could not know. Fearing none but the
throne, symbolizes his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 600 A.D., Scandinavians and Germanic tribes were Pagans. The "Old Stones Gods" were the Pagan Gods that were worshipped BY heathens before
Christianity took over England. During his battle with Grendel's mother, Beowulf had fought her and killed her. Lines 520–525 states, "Her body fell
to the floor, lifeless, the sword the sword was wet with her blood, and Beowulf rejoiced at the sight". As Grendel's mother had met her last breath,
Paganism had disappeared in Sutton Hoo. Christianity have been taking over by converting Pagans, changing the Suffolk

True West The Mother And Old Man Analysis
2.In the play True West the Mother and Old Man play as though own caricatures of the New West and the Old West. The reason i see the Mother
and Old Man as caricatures is do to their rather exaggerated characteristics to what they represent, for example take the Old Man; an old poor man
who lives out in the desert wasting his money away on alcohol and who knows what. He is almost an example of a cheesy Western; An oldman with no
teeth and drunk at the bar. Austin and Lee also see him in vastly different lights. Austin has great disdain for his Old Man, he see him as a lost case.
"He's not gonna' change." and "Let's leave the old man out of it." is the way Austin views him, and when you add the idea that the Old Man is a
caricature of the Old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Scene 7 when Austin says to Lee: "Here's a thought. Saul Kimmer–– ... He thinks we're the same person." is another example to the similarity of
them being each half of the same coin. If you approach the idea of Austin and Lee being one person the conflict with himself "True West" turns
from being brothers against another to a single artist's conflict of methodology vs creativity and Art for profit vs art as art. In the case of
methodology vs creativity this fusion of Austin and Lee struggle to write a screenplay. In True West, Austin is methodical without the small
inkling of of something creative, while Lee is abuzz with idea but no idea how to put them on paper. Neither of them can write a truly good
screenplay, as Lee put it: " I got a good story! I know it's a good story. I just need a little help is all." it's as if this singular person can't be creative
unless he has a method of conveying the creativity . On the matter of art for profit vs art as art both change their viewpoint drastically thought out
the play. At the start of the play to Austin screenwriting is his career and his income viewing his work more as a project then art. Lee on the other
hand views screenwriting more just look into the arts even saying "You may not know it but I did a little art myself once." as if it was only something
to just dabble in. Later on in the play when the fusion of the two characters (who have had way too much to drink) they start to focus on the
complexities of writing.

Old South vs. New South in O'Conner's Everything That Rises Must Converge
Flannery O'Connor's "Everything That Rises Must Converge" depicts a stifling mother–son relationship in which the conflict is never resolved, or even
acknowledged. This relationship is a metaphor which describes the transition from the Old South, with its inherent values used to justify slavery and
segregation, to the New South, striving for justice based on equality. Mrs, Chestney (old South) and her son Julian (New South) represent, on an
individual scale, the interactions of their corresponding constituencies, "'The world is a mess everywhere... I don't know how we've let it get in this
mess", states Mrs, Chestney on the subject of segregation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kathleen Feeley wrote that "eventually the mother's 'culture of the heart' fails because it is unreal" , and her inability to advise Julian clearly is
indicative of this. Julian does not like his mother. To him, she is an embarrassment, a burden, and backward. He has learned to identify racism, and
has learned to argue against it, However, when his mother is the perpetrator, the issue becomes wrapped around the hostility he feels for her. For
example, he resents her methods of motherhood, or perhaps her headstrong commitment to her unwitting ignorance. Most likely, when taking the issue
into account, he feels the most anger towards her for raising him as a racist, and now, despite an education that presumes the opposite, he finds that
he remains racist. Instead of addressing these problems, he seeks to belittle her, When the large Negro woman first enters the story, he immediately
wished that she sit beside his mother, in order to disturb her. Yet "to his annoyance, she squeezed herself into [the seat next to his]". His lack of
insight regarding their relationship is revealed when he has fantasies of presenting his mother with a Black acquaintance: either a business associate, a
lover, or even the doctor whom he could hire to heal her. When he asks the man with the newspaper for a light (with neither cigarettes nor the desire to
smoke), he embarrasses himself solely to confound her. He remains racist not

Essay on Creative Writing: GILF
GILF When the weather turned, no one spoke to Anne about anything other than the weather; the same conversation, all day, every day until the sun
returned. Glancing occasionally through the bakery window she saw the rain fall like strings of mercury, exploding into black droplets onto the
pavement outside. Little drops of gloom, drops of gloom that keep us alive, that others in more remote corners of the globe tempt with elaborate
dance. Anne had seen them on the Discovery channel pounding their leathered feet on the scorched, cracked earth and shaking their rain sticks at the
sun and sky. With no breeze to carry the weight of a prayer their cries fall, shattered, parched and trampled underfoot. If the rain did show up the locals

had to admit, glad to see the back of him, idle bastard that he was. On sunny days Old women spoke about 'Mrs Whatshername' and her immoral

old men just talked about themselves. Something happened to men of a certain age Anne noticed, they completely gave up on the rest of humanity,
rather they became insular and self obsessed. Nothing new is any good, it's all bollocks, the internet is Satan, nothing is ever made like it used to be
and kids are in need of a bloody good war. Rather than dwell on the state of the world they shut out everything else but themselves, become blinkered

The Revolt Of Mother, A High Toned Old Christian Woman
The role of women has changed drastically over the course of years. With the help of the Civil War and the industrial revolution women have grown
and learned not to accept that they are not objects and not to accept being belittled by men. Many authors played a significant part in showing that the
role of women's' evolution. Women went from having hardly any rights to playing a major role in society economically. The stories "The Revolt of
Mother" ,"New England Nun" by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, "The Yellow Wallpaper" byCharlotte Perkins Gilman, "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg, "A

The role of women in the modernism time period was less stern but still very constricting. Women in the modernist time period had more control
over men than in the realism time period. The women had gained more control over what they did with the lives they lived. T.S Eliot shows that
women have grown through the poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by conveying that women have more control over their bodys (Mayer).
The narrator of the poem wants a romantic relationship with his wife but cannot because she doesn't want one with him. The man in the poem knows
that he cannot have sexual intercourse without his wife's permission and there is nothing he can do to change that. Women could now freely do as
they pleased when it came to their bodys. Sandburg expresses in his poem that women are much more free and can do more so of what they please to,
"painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys," (Sandburg). Men started considering women as their equals and not just as objects. Women
were now being allowed to express their opinions more openly. The women in the modernist time period could dress more elaborately with less
judgment. Sandburg also shows that

Essay on Sharon Olds' The Possessive
The Possessive
Teenage rebellion is typically portrayed in stories, films, and other genres as a testosterone–based phenomenon. There is an overplayed need for one to
acknowledge a boy's rebellion against his father, his life direction, the "system," in an effort to become a man, or rather an adult. However, rarely is
the female addressed in such a scenario. What happens when little girls grow up? Do they rebel? Do they, in a sudden overpowering rush of estrogen,
deny what has been taught to them from birth and shed their former youthful façades? Do they turn on their mothers? In Sharon Olds' poem, "The
Possessive," the reader is finally introduced to the female version of the popular coming–of–age theme as a simple ... Show more content on

From here the tone of unease and apprehension often felt before a great battle is set. This is not a haircut. It is a preparation for war.
The next image Olds puts into play is that of the vision of her daughter reborn as the enemy. Olds describes the daughter's hair by saying, "each strand
now cuts/ both ways. The blade of new bangs hangs over her red–brown eyes/ like carbon steel." This is not a typical description of hair. Olds
specifically compares the young girl's hair to a freshly sharpened weapon. With words such as "cuts," "blade," and "carbon steel," Olds builds up an
image of a lethal weapon such as a knife or perhaps sword, weapons both clearly used for battle. Olds further describes the girl's hair by
acknowledging that "all the little/ spliced ropes are sliced." The line break in the poem which leaves the phrase "all the little" alone to be followed
up by second line describing the sliced hair, adds to Olds image. "All the little" appears as a memory of the mother of her former daughter, a memory
that is quickly destroyed by the second image of those little strands now taking on a threatening sliced form. In addition, the line also holds a visual
separation between the two different images that occupy the mother's same thought

Theme of Death as Explored in Crabbit Old Woman, Remember,...
In the three poems Crabbit Old Woman, Remember, and Refugee Mother and Child, the similar theme is death. Remember is a sonnet by Christina
Rossetti, which goes into the thoughts of a dying woman imploring her lover to forever remember her, only to change her mind after the volta. Phyllis
McCormack's Crabbit Old Woman tells of an old lady's opinion on her nurses' perception of her. Refugee Mother and Child, written by Chinua Achebe,
is an emotive poem which depicts a mother's unwavering devotion towards her dying son.

partner to never forget her. The first 'Remember me', is almost like an order,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader's sight, smell and touch senses are provoked as they read through the stanza. The imagery suggests that the children are almost skeleton–like,
which the reader can depict. Undoubtedly, the reader who find these pictures repulsive, which is the intended effect. There is an emphasis on the word
'wash', which the narrator does to stress that the children have poor cleanliness.Achebe holds nothing back and is intentionally grim, as he wants the
reader to have a realistic view on the reality of the children's conditions. This rouses emotion from the reader.
The repetitive use of the word 'ghost' has connotations of death, which shows that what was once a smile is now gone. It also hints at the fact that the
boy is dead. The mention of the mother's 'pride' and 'singing in her eyes' reflects greatly on her heartening and positive attitude, even though she is in
the toughest of circumstances. Even though her son barely has any hair left, she still shows affection, combing through it tenderly. This causes the
reader to admire her, and her unconditional love towards her son, hence the comparison with Madonna and Jesus. The fact that he is the one with
'rust–coloured hair' connotes that his health was deteriorating, like the effect of rust.
The final simile has a devastating effect, as Achebe compares the son's previous usual routine of breakfast and school to his mother's new routine of
'putting flowers on a tiny grave'. The word 'tiny' displays the fact that

Biography Of Maria Guadalupe Villarreal 's Life
When I was younger I used to feel that anyone over thirty was old. Now that I am in my mid thirties I look back and laugh. I don't associate thirty with
old anymore; I now go by "you're only as old as you feel." My mother has always said that and surely lives by it. I choose her to interview because she
is well into her seventies and probably has more energy than I do. Maria Guadalupe Villarreal was born on December 30, 1942. She spent most of her
life working in retail and is now retired. My idea of retirement is very different from hers. She spends most days working in the yard or cleaning
apartments for extra money although she could do without. My mother's favorite saying is "you rest, your rust!" Naturally when I read this in our
text book I thought about her for the interview. My mom has always been very outgoing and active. For the most part she spends a lot of time
keeping busy and enjoys reading, sewing, and gardening. Growing up we were taught to be mindful of what we ate and how much. Food is a big
thing, especially in our culture. Mexican food isn't the healthiest and everything is eaten with a tortilla. However, in her late fifties she was
diagnosed with diabetes. I asked her how she felt when this diagnosis came about, and she said it was part of life and just meant she needed to be
more careful with how she ate. So we all began eating a little healthier because it was a genetic disease and she wanted us to avoid having it later in
life. According to our

Speech On Elderly Drivers
Elderly Drivers
Each day people put themselves in danger when they step into a motorized vehicle. Approximately 37,000 Americans die each year due to car
accidents; in addition, 2.3 million are either injured or disabled ("Road Crash Statistics."). When a driver is operating a motorized vehicle, there are
possible dangers that include cutting off other drivers when switching lanes, exceeding the speed limit, and drivers whose skills are not as good as
they were 30+ years ago. Elderly drivers are being scrutinized because they are frequently involved in car accidents.
Elderly drivers put themselves at risk while driving. As a driver becomes older, there is a chance that the individual has been placed on medications
that can affect his/her driving. Some medication can cause side effects, such as drowsiness and loss of sight. Also, physical and mental states may
begin to diminish, and when an accident occurs with an elderly driver, then the driver is less likely to survive a crash because of his/her fragile bones,
weaker muscles, and slower reaction time. Some elderly drivers may have health conditions that can take a major toll on them.
Some children of aging parents are also concerned with their well–beings. The children of the elders are hesitant to speak with their parents about
giving up their driving privileges in exchange for public transportation. Steven Petrow, author of "When our elderly mother refused to stop driving, we
took drastic action", expressed his concerns

The Books From The Old Testament And New Testament
The books from the Old Testament and New Testament do not have a direct link between them. For the readers of the bible, there is a clear end of the
Old Testament with the book of Malachi, and the beginning of the New Testament with the book of Matthew does not continue with what was left in
Malachi. The author, John Butler, refers to John the Baptist as the "connecting link between the Old and New Testament." The 400 years that separate
the Old Testament with the New Testament John the Baptist makes a link in this time period. John the Baptist connects the Old Testament by focusing
on the wrath of God, and in the New Testament he announces the coming of the Messiah. By studying John the Baptist one can understand how God

come, and how he will announce the coming of Christ. The second prophecy that is announced in the Old Testament is in Malachi chapter 3:1 "See, I

Symbolism In Under The Persimmon Tree
Introduction
(AGG) Many authors use symbolism to show the development of a character, like the author of Under The Persimmon Tree does. (BS–1) In the
beginning of the novel, Najmah changes from a childlike girl to an adult–like woman and the author uses the bukri, or baby goat, to symbolize this
change. (BS–2) When Mada–Jan and Habib die, Shaheed is born and Golestan Najmah dies and the author uses Najmah's first haircut to give a deeper
meaning to this change. (BS–3) After Najmah meets Nusrat, she develops into another version of herself and the author uses another haircut to add
another level beneath this literal change. (TS) The author uses symbolism to show Najmah's development throughout the novel.
(MIP–1) Najmah goes from an innocent child in the family to an adult in the family and the author uses the bukri to show this change. (SIP–A) The
author shows that Najmah grows up to be an adult after her father and brother were taken away. (STEWE–1) After Najmah's brother and father are
taken away, her mother goes into depression and just silently sits. This is like a role reversal between Najmah and her mother. Before, Najmah
used to need to be told to do the work because she was much like a child. Now, it is the other way around. Najmah knows she has to have the
maturity of an adult in order to survive, so she does. This is why she tells her mother, "'You may choose not to live, but the baby and I need you. And
the flock needs food. I don't want to die"'(38). Right after

Symbolism In Andy Lovell And The Song Of The Old Mother
In order to be happy, people must have a purpose in life. This theme is demonstrated through both symbolism and mood in the passages "Andy
Lovell" by T.S. Arthur and "The Song of the Old Mother" by William Butler Yeats. Through these literary devices, the authors show that by not
following your passion, you will eventually become miserable. Because of their powerful words, the reader gets a firm grasp on the importance
of objectives in life. The first way the authors show the theme of ambition is through symbolism. For example, in "Andy Lovell", Arthur writes,
"there was better stuff in that knife, before it was lost, than in any other knife in the shop." In this scene, Andy Lovell's neighbor is presenting him
a knife that was left outside. The knife was rusted, while another identical knife that had been in use was perfectly fine. This symbolizes what can
happen to someone when they do not have a goal. A person who gives up their direction can begin to deteriorate. Later in the story, symbolism is
seen when Arthur tells, "Andy Lovell shut the blinds before the windows of his shop... the future looked very blank." Here, Andy Lovell has
officially closed down his shop. He has given up doing what he loves most, and he realizes that there is nothing waiting for him in the future. This
sense of uneasiness describes the negative effects of giving up your aspirations. In the poem "The Song of the Old Mother," symbolism is shown
when Yeats relates, "And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold." Here, fire is representing a person's passion. When you do not have a purpose,
the fire begins to fade away. This can cause a person to lose their excitement and energy, much like a fire does when it begins to diminish. Similarly,
this poem shows this by adding, "I must scrub and bake and sweep till stars are beginning to blink and peep." This symbolizes how the subject of the
poem, and elderly woman, spends her days doing nothing but working. While this sounds tedious, it hints at the fact that she finds her purpose in life
through her work. Without it, she would fall victim to the effects of old age. Through these examples, the reader gets and understanding of the
importance of having desires. Furthermore, the authors

Abstract
When people think of the book or the movie, Old Yeller, it is often thought of as a story about the bond between a boy and his dog, a common theme

Afterall, he had just lost his dog, Bell, to a rattlesnake bite, and the attachment to both Bell and his father cannot be replaced so soon. With his father
gone away for several months and Bell dead at the fangs of a rattlesnake, Travis has some major adjustments to make in terms of his "internal model
of self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with–disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get
scolded by his mother for doing so which leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles–boy,
playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the
family if nobody paid any attention to what I thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the
angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns out to be a big help. She helps by getting the
water and gathering the corn, and has a good time laughing with Mama and Arliss. It hurts Travis' pride to see him so easily replaced by a girl. He
consoles himself by remembering that he can hunt, mark hogs and swing an axe, and she cannot (studymode 2014).

A Mother's Love In My Aged Mother By Matsuo Basho
A mothers love I analyzed, My Aged Mother by Matsuo Basho. The emperor issues a cruel order to have all the old folks abandoned and left to
die. They have no use to the community at an old age. A poor farmer lived with his aged mother down the hill. During work he received the news
of the order and dreaded having to go home. As he returns from work he packs his mother's supper, lifted her onto his back and started walking
towards the Obatsayuma, the mountain of the "abandoning of aged". The mother was anxious as they drifted path to path going deeper and
deeper into the woods. She began to break branches off trees to leave a path, so her son could find his way back home. As he put her down onto
the pile of leaves, she told him to follow the path of twigs. He looked back down the path and looked at his hopeless mother and lifted her back
onto his back. He couldn't believe the kind act from his mother, so he took her back home. When he arrived, he told the emperor his story and the
emperor listened to his story and abolished the cruel order. There are three characters. The emperor is a cruel absolute leader, a warrior who declared
the decree to have the old folk abandoned and left to die. He feels that the older folk do not contribute, are not strong, and they have no use to the
community. He is a role model to the kingdom, he motivates the people to see the strongest ability within themselves. The emperor realized the act of
the poor farmer's mother showed him that the

Elderly Adult Survey Paper
"Elderly Adult Survey" Mrs. Audine Blue is my client for this "Elderly Adult Survey." Interviewing this lovely lady was delightful as she revealed
her birthday of August 15, 1933 and is 84 years young. The lovely Mother Blue originally from North Carolina was afforded to live for a while in
California, as well as, in New York before returning to North Carolina. Married to Mr. Henry Shelton Blue at very young age, they have one daughter,
one grandchild, and one great grandchild. Asking about her parents, Mother Audine became sad considering they died while she was young. The cause
of their death was hard work and cruel treatment that Mother Audine had to witness as a child. However, she recalled how they put their trust in God and

Serving God is important to her, being very involved in her Christian non–denominational church has kept her going through adult years. Namely,
church programs she served include the Women's Ministry/Events; Usher Board; Senior Choir; Sunday School Teacher, as well as, feeding the
homeless and young children. By all means, one can sense she loved being around people also ready to share candy/mints with everyone. Another
key point, going out to eat or just riding around give her get joy. Similarly, interviewing Mother Audine relates to personal experiences that I have
with two other ladies in their 80's. I thank God for the patience, wisdom and knowledge as I age. In reality, the church has played a major role in the
life of Mother Audine Blue. Truly, the love for her church family is undeniable. However, she misses her great grandson that she helped raised.
Reflecting on their relationship, she recalls anything he wanted, asked for, she gave him. Unfortunately, her only daughter had a misunderstanding with
years ago and they never reconciled. And yet, Henry Shelton Blue, her husband left many years ago and never returned. Thank God for the closeness
of her brother, cousins, her personal care giver and her church family that supports

Father's Pride in Raising Two Children and 37-Year Career

  • 1. The Most Wonderful Part Of My Life "Having two beautiful children is the most wonderful part of my life." Bruce David Morrow, my father is so proud of my brother and I. The way to describe him is kindhearted, caring, loving, and patient, all great qualities of a father. He was born on July 20, 1951 in Portsmouth hospital and grew up in the town of Kittery, Maine as an only child. He went to Northeastern University graduating with bachelors of science in mechanical engineering. My father worked on the shipyard as a mechanical engineer for 37ВЅ years before retiring at the age of 63. This past summer he has since gone back to the shipyard doing part–time consulting. Bruce is 6'1" and 210 pounds. My father has thick salt and pepper grey hair and mustache, hazel eyes, and several wrinkles in his later years. His skin is always keeps an olive color year–round and he gets quite a tan from all his golfing in the summer. Historical My father lived in Kittery, Maine his entire childhood other than going to college. Bruce as an only child and his parents were Della and Norman Morrow. His parents grew up in the depression so they were very frugal with their money. He moved to Connecticut in June of 1974 for his first job and moved back October 1978. Bruce stayed in the area after moving back in 1978. His first car was a 1965 Triumph Spitfire which he bought at 18 years old but he got his license at 16 years old. He has always had an interest in sport cars. When he got his license, gas was only 29 cents a gallon! I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Contrasting Old Mother Savage and The Tell-Tale Heart Essay Contrasting Old Mother Savage and The Tell–Tale Heart Writers may use different techniques to get the same effect out of the audience. In the short story, "Old Mother Savage" by Guy Du Maupassant, a tragic story of a woman who losses everything is told. The story is scary in that it has an ending that one would not expect. Also, it can be looked at as a sad story because the mother seems to be sad throughout the entire story. At the end theonly thing that she has to be satisfied about is that her murdering four young men can make other women feel how she felt when she found out about the death of her son. This story can be compared to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell–Tale Heart", when you talk about the strategies that both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the author's first attempt at making the audience have sympathy for the woman. In our modern day society, we would think that this woman is abandoned and maybe might need some kind of physiological attention. This is a contrast to Poe who wanted people to get the impression that the speaker in his story was a mad man. They both seem to want you to have a kind heart when thinking about the two, however, Poes' character dismisses his credibility when he starts to talk about his reasoning behind his killing. The story goes on to say that the woman was forced to care for four young men who were enemies that took over the city. But the woman does not seem to mind because they treat her with a great deal of respect and they also provide her with companionship. One day she receives a letter telling her that her son was killed: "She did not cry. She stood motionless, stricken, dazed so that she could feel no more" (Du Maupassant, 3). One can argue that this is the point were the woman's' feelings leave and the only thing in her heart is revenge. This is the turning point in the story and at this point the reader is worried about what the woman will now do. When she returns home, she makes the rabbit that the soldiers have captured for the day. At this point not a word is said about what the woman is planning on doing, which leaves the audience in suspense. When killing the rabbit the speakers says that she could see "...her big son...covered in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Comparison of Seamus Heaney's Poem Digging and The song... I have looked at the poem 'Digging' by Seamus Heaney. The poem is about the poet digging into his past and appears to be a modest poem. The "nicking and slicing neatly" that Heaney says in his poem can also apply to the crafting of a poem. Heaney seems unhappy and distanced from his farming family roots however he shows a good amount of admiration for farming men. Heaney shows the skill and dignity of labour. The expertise is rather admired than the strength and the technique is very precisely explained. He constantly has memories of common places, which very few people would notice, but Heaney thinks that these memories should be recognised. He is frustrated at how different he is to his ... In this quote the tone of her voice would be low and depressed because she must scrub and sweep till stars begin to blink and peep which means she has to work till late at night. The young people in 'The song of the old mother' do not care for what the old mother does for them but Heaney is determined to dig with his pen and remember his roots. "And the young lie long and dream in their bed." This quote also has another meaning, for this comparison the quote means that while the young lie long and dream they still take granted for what the old mother does for them. "Over his shoulder, going down and down for the good turf. Digging." This quote is showing that he is digging and digging into his past and trying to remember his roots. In 'The song of the old mother' the structure of the poem looks tight like her life could have been as in those days women weren't allowed to do much apart from cook clean and look after the kids.
  • 4. The structure of 'Digging' looks spaced out and free. • 5. Imagery In Beowulf The Old–English epic poem of Beowulf, officially written down somewhere around the year 1066 by the Beowulf poet, is one where you are persistently kept of the edge of your seat due to its superior use of vivid phrases and imagery. In the Anglo–Saxon period in which the story takes place bravery, heroic deeds, and loyalty to one another is paramount. Beowulf, a tenacious scandinavian warrior, is the savior of a neighboring kingdom due to his aptness to slay the treacherous monsters such as the nefarious Grendel and his mother. A truly remarkable feat is how the words and actions of this poem are put to life in the movie. Though remarkable, the cinema didn't exactly correlate with the poem. In fact the integrity of the poem almost seems diminished ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He claims that Beowulf once lost a swimming match against Breca and that Beowulf will meet with defeat for a second time when he faces Grendel in the mead–hall. Mentioning the swimming race reassures that indeed Beowulf is indeed mortal and capable of defeat comparatively than displaying him as immortal. Parent Child Relationships in Before You Were Mine, Kid, On My First Sonne, and The Song Of The Old Mother All of the poems are about emotions and parent child relationships. In Before You Were Mine, the girl idolises and loves her mother. Whereas the man in Kid feels angry towards his father, and resents him too. In the poem On My First Sonne, the father loves his son a lot and feels grief for his dead son. Which is different from The Song Of The Old Mother as in this the mother is angry and annoyed at her children. I shall look for similarities and differences in the parent child relationships that are in all four of the poems. The use of structure in Kid shows the past and present in a chronological way, it's like a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, "...the fire flicker and glow" this shows the start of her day. Then the middle shows she works hard "...I must scrub and bake and sweep." Finally, the end of her day "...fire gets feeble and cold." This is effective because it shows that she is a hard working mother. This is also similar to On My First Sonne as it is also one long verse. Lines one to four show the meaning to loss of his son "Farwell, thou child of my right hand, and joy." Then the middle lines show the father asking questions full of grief "For why will man lament the state he should envie?" Finally, he accepts his loss "...all his vows be such." The themes in Before You Were Mine are about growing up and looking back with memories and thinking of all the positive things which happened. For example, "Cha cha cha! You'd teach me the steps..." This gives the impression that there was a strong bonding between the mother and child because there was a lot of parent love. This is similar to On My First Sonne because the parent child relationship is full of love. For instance it says, "Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy." This shows that there is a lot of love and care from the parent towards his son. His son was his pride. I think that these two poems have a strong parent child relationship, because both of the parents show a lot of love and affection towards there children. This makes me as a reader feel ... The original Old Mother Hubbard dog biscuits were actually developed as a snack for fishermen. Since 1926, the brand has specialized in all–natural, oven–baked dog treats. Methods vary from osteopathy, the most common form of medicine, and less conventional forms such as folk healing, faith healing, chiropractors, aromatherapy, Ayurveda and etc. (Cockerham p. 312). Two articles "Marijuana Stops Child's Severe Seizures" and "New Mothers and Old Asian Customs" demonstrate different forms of healing methods and the steps it takes to become healthy again. The article "Marijuana Stops Child's Severe Seizures" by Saundra Young reveals an unusual solution to a child's illness. Starting from a young age, Charlotte Figi started getting frequent seizures. The seizures lasted from two to four hours and often required Charlotte to be hospitalized. After doing several tests, the doctors were not able to find the exact cause for Charlotte's seizures. They eventually diagnosed Charlotte with Dravet Syndrome. Following the diagnosis, the doctors decided to start treatment which proved to be unsuccessful. The next step they took was to implement a ketogenic diet which worked for two years with some side effects. Finally, Charlotte's parents decided to try using medical marijuana that has low THC levels. The medical marijuana used proved to be successful in reducing Charlotte's seizures drastically. The Wise Old Woman is an elderly character from the short story "The Wise Old Woman" retold by Yoshiko Uchida. The old grandfather, also referred to as the old man, is an elderly character from the short story "The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson" retold by Leo Tolstoy. Although The Wise Old Woman and the old grandfather are both mistreated, they are disrespected because of different circumstances, but respond to their mistreatment similarly. The Wise Old Woman lives with herson, the farmer, in a small village in the western hills of Japan. The young lord of this village does not want old residents in his village. In lines 3 and 4, the young lord says "I have no use for old people in my village. They are neither useful or able to work for a living." To solve his conflict, the young lord gives an order. The young lord states that command in lines 4, 5, and 6 saying, "I therefore decree that anyone over seventy–one must be banished from the village and left in the mountains to die." The Wise Old Woman was treated very well by her son. Lines 16 and 17 say "They were poor, but the farmer was good to his mother, and the two of them lived happily together." Once The Wise Old Woman turned 71, her son did not have the heart to take her to the mountains and leave her to die. He knew that if he did not take his mother to the mountains, soldiers would be sent to take both him and his mother to die. Lines 22, 23, 24, and 25 say "Each day the son put off telling his mother that he must take her into the mountains to die, but the people of the village began to talk. The farmer knew that if he did not take his mother away soon the lord would send his soldiers and throw them both into a dark dungeon to die a terrible death." After earning her BA from Stanford and her Ph.D from Columbia, she began writing poetry free of traditional conventions. Thus, she was able to develop her own poetry style and explored personal topics from family life to more taboo subjects such as sex. Across all subjects, her poetry is known for its accessibility to all audiences and its raw, honest storytelling. Paraphrase: While I brush out our daughter's silky brown hair before the mirror, I see myself, a silver–haired servant behind her, and notice the grey hair gleaming on my head. Why is it that parents begin to grow old just as their children begin to develop? As the fold in my neck becomes more noticeable, she develops her curves; as my skin becomes dry and wrinkled, she blooms like a cactus flower. Just as the my fertility fades, hers is at its peak, abundant with possibility. I brush her tangled, sweet–smelling hair at bedtime, and ponder upon the oldest story we have on our planet––the story of replacement. • 25. Examples Of Paganism In Beowulf Beowulf is the oldest piece of surviving epic poems in the English Literature. It was written during the Anglo–Saxon's period, better known as "Old English". Beowulf is about a warrior, who seeks fame by doing courageous deeds. He does this, by fighting three powerful foes: Grendel, Grendel's mother, and a Dragon. These battle show that religions, Christianity and Paganism have been a significant theme and a part of Suffolk culture. Beowulf's first enemy, the greedy monster known as "Grendel" symbolized sins within Christianity. According to page , lines 19–23, the epic states, "He was spawned in that slime, conceived by a pair of monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abel's death." Grendel has been compared as Cain and Abel's descendants, the story of Adam and Eve's oldest son killing his brother. This supports that Suffolk's believed in Christianity, as they believed Grendel was the "darkest demon" that had been given birth to by the ultimate sinner. The influence of Christianity amongst the Suffolk culture continues when Grendel is afraid of Hrothgar's throne. Old South vs. New South in O'Conner's Everything That Rises Must Converge Flannery O'Connor's "Everything That Rises Must Converge" depicts a stifling mother–son relationship in which the conflict is never resolved, or even acknowledged. Young mothers stressed about new teeth, tantrums, potty training and finding the right school whereas old men just talked about themselves. Many authors played a significant part in showing that the role of women's' evolution. Women went from having hardly any rights to playing a major role in society economically. The role of women in the modernism time period was less stern but still very constricting. Women in the modernist time period had more control over men than in the realism time period. The women had gained more control over what they did with the lives they lived. T.S Eliot shows that women have grown through the poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by conveying that women have more control over their bodys (Mayer). The narrator of the poem wants a romantic relationship with his wife but cannot because she doesn't want one with him. The man in the poem knows that he cannot have sexual intercourse without his wife's permission and there is nothing he can do to change that. Women could now freely do as they pleased when it came to their bodys. Sandburg expresses in his poem that women are much more free and can do more so of what they please to, "painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys," (Sandburg). Men started considering women as their equals and not just as objects. Women were now being allowed to express their opinions more openly. • 32. Essay on Sharon Olds' The Possessive The Possessive Teenage rebellion is typically portrayed in stories, films, and other genres as a testosterone–based phenomenon. There is an overplayed need for one to acknowledge a boy's rebellion against his father, his life direction, the "system," in an effort to become a man, or rather an adult. However, rarely is the female addressed in such a scenario. What happens when little girls grow up? Do they rebel? Do they, in a sudden overpowering rush of estrogen, deny what has been taught to them from birth and shed their former youthful faГ§ades? Do they turn on their mothers? In Sharon Olds' poem, "The Possessive," the reader is finally introduced to the female version of the popular coming–of–age theme as a simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From here the tone of unease and apprehension often felt before a great battle is set. This is not a haircut. It is a preparation for war. The next image Olds puts into play is that of the vision of her daughter reborn as the enemy. Olds describes the daughter's hair by saying, "each strand now cuts/ both ways. The blade of new bangs hangs over her red–brown eyes/ like carbon steel." This is not a typical description of hair. Olds specifically compares the young girl's hair to a freshly sharpened weapon. With words such as "cuts," "blade," and "carbon steel," Olds builds up an image of a lethal weapon such as a knife or perhaps sword, weapons both clearly used for battle. Olds further describes the girl's hair by acknowledging that "all the little/ spliced ropes are sliced." The line break in the poem which leaves the phrase "all the little" alone to be followed up by second line describing the sliced hair, adds to Olds image. "All the little" appears as a memory of the mother of her former daughter, a memory that is quickly destroyed by the second image of those little strands now taking on a threatening sliced form. Remember is a sonnet by Christina Rossetti, which goes into the thoughts of a dying woman imploring her lover to forever remember her, only to change her mind after the volta. Phyllis McCormack's Crabbit Old Woman tells of an old lady's opinion on her nurses' perception of her. Refugee Mother and Child, written by Chinua Achebe, is an emotive poem which depicts a mother's unwavering devotion towards her dying son. In Remember, there is heavy repetition of the word 'remember'. This emphasizes the main objective of the poem, which was to tell the narrator's partner to never forget her. There is an emphasis on the word 'wash', which the narrator does to stress that the children have poor cleanliness.Achebe holds nothing back and is intentionally grim, as he wants the reader to have a realistic view on the reality of the children's conditions. This rouses emotion from the reader. The repetitive use of the word 'ghost' has connotations of death, which shows that what was once a smile is now gone. It also hints at the fact that the boy is dead. The mention of the mother's 'pride' and 'singing in her eyes' reflects greatly on her heartening and positive attitude, even though she is in the toughest of circumstances. Even though her son barely has any hair left, she still shows affection, combing through it tenderly. This causes the reader to admire her, and her unconditional love towards her son, hence the comparison with Madonna and Jesus. The fact that he is the one with 'rust–coloured hair' connotes that his health was deteriorating, like the effect of rust. • 34. Biography Of Maria Guadalupe Villarreal 's Life When I was younger I used to feel that anyone over thirty was old. Now that I am in my mid thirties I look back and laugh. I don't associate thirty with old anymore; I now go by "you're only as old as you feel." My mother has always said that and surely lives by it. I choose her to interview because she is well into her seventies and probably has more energy than I do. Maria Guadalupe Villarreal was born on December 30, 1942. She spent most of her life working in retail and is now retired. My idea of retirement is very different from hers. She spends most days working in the yard or cleaning apartments for extra money although she could do without. My mother's favorite saying is "you rest, your rust!" Naturally when I read this in our text book I thought about her for the interview. My mom has always been very outgoing and active. For the most part she spends a lot of time keeping busy and enjoys reading, sewing, and gardening. Growing up we were taught to be mindful of what we ate and how much. Food is a big thing, especially in our culture. Mexican food isn't the healthiest and everything is eaten with a tortilla. However, in her late fifties she was diagnosed with diabetes. I asked her how she felt when this diagnosis came about, and she said it was part of life and just meant she needed to be more careful with how she ate. So we all began eating a little healthier because it was a genetic disease and she wanted us to avoid having it later in life. According to our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When a driver is operating a motorized vehicle, there are possible dangers that include cutting off other drivers when switching lanes, exceeding the speed limit, and drivers whose skills are not as good as they were 30+ years ago. Elderly drivers are being scrutinized because they are frequently involved in car accidents. Elderly drivers put themselves at risk while driving. As a driver becomes older, there is a chance that the individual has been placed on medications that can affect his/her driving. Some medication can cause side effects, such as drowsiness and loss of sight. Also, physical and mental states may begin to diminish, and when an accident occurs with an elderly driver, then the driver is less likely to survive a crash because of his/her fragile bones, weaker muscles, and slower reaction time. Some elderly drivers may have health conditions that can take a major toll on them. Some children of aging parents are also concerned with their well–beings. For the readers of the bible, there is a clear end of the Old Testament with the book of Malachi, and the beginning of the New Testament with the book of Matthew does not continue with what was left in Malachi. The author, John Butler, refers to John the Baptist as the "connecting link between the Old and New Testament." The 400 years that separate the Old Testament with the New Testament John the Baptist makes a link in this time period. (BS–1) In the beginning of the novel, Najmah changes from a childlike girl to an adult–like woman and the author uses the bukri, or baby goat, to symbolize this change. (BS–2) When Mada–Jan and Habib die, Shaheed is born and Golestan Najmah dies and the author uses Najmah's first haircut to give a deeper meaning to this change. (BS–3) After Najmah meets Nusrat, she develops into another version of herself and the author uses another haircut to add another level beneath this literal change. (TS) The author uses symbolism to show Najmah's development throughout the novel. (MIP–1) Najmah goes from an innocent child in the family to an adult in the family and the author uses the bukri to show this change. (SIP–A) The author shows that Najmah grows up to be an adult after her father and brother were taken away. (STEWE–1) After Najmah's brother and father are taken away, her mother goes into depression and just silently sits. This is like a role reversal between Najmah and her mother. Before, Najmah used to need to be told to do the work because she was much like a child. Now, it is the other way around. Najmah knows she has to have the maturity of an adult in order to survive, so she does. This is why she tells her mother, "'You may choose not to live, but the baby and I need you. • 38. Symbolism In Andy Lovell And The Song Of The Old Mother In order to be happy, people must have a purpose in life. This theme is demonstrated through both symbolism and mood in the passages "Andy Lovell" by T.S. Arthur and "The Song of the Old Mother" by William Butler Yeats. Through these literary devices, the authors show that by not following your passion, you will eventually become miserable. Because of their powerful words, the reader gets a firm grasp on the importance of objectives in life. The first way the authors show the theme of ambition is through symbolism. For example, in "Andy Lovell", Arthur writes, "there was better stuff in that knife, before it was lost, than in any other knife in the shop." In this scene, Andy Lovell's neighbor is presenting him a knife that was left outside. The knife was rusted, while another identical knife that had been in use was perfectly fine. This symbolizes what can happen to someone when they do not have a goal. A person who gives up their direction can begin to deteriorate. Later in the story, symbolism is seen when Arthur tells, "Andy Lovell shut the blinds before the windows of his shop... the future looked very blank." Here, Andy Lovell has officially closed down his shop. He has given up doing what he loves most, and he realizes that there is nothing waiting for him in the future. This sense of uneasiness describes the negative effects of giving up your aspirations. In the poem "The Song of the Old Mother," symbolism is shown when Yeats relates, "And the seed of the fire gets feeble and cold." Here, fire is representing a person's passion. When you do not have a purpose, the fire begins to fade away. This can cause a person to lose their excitement and energy, much like a fire does when it begins to diminish. Similarly, this poem shows this by adding, "I must scrub and bake and sweep till stars are beginning to blink and peep." This symbolizes how the subject of the poem, and elderly woman, spends her days doing nothing but working. While this sounds tedious, it hints at the fact that she finds her purpose in life through her work. Without it, she would fall victim to the effects of old age. Through these examples, the reader gets and understanding of the importance of having desires. Furthermore, the authors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With his father gone away for several months and Bell dead at the fangs of a rattlesnake, Travis has some major adjustments to make in terms of his "internal model of self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with–disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles–boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." The emperor issues a cruel order to have all the old folks abandoned and left to die. They have no use to the community at an old age. A poor farmer lived with his aged mother down the hill. During work he received the news of the order and dreaded having to go home. As he returns from work he packs his mother's supper, lifted her onto his back and started walking towards the Obatsayuma, the mountain of the "abandoning of aged". The mother was anxious as they drifted path to path going deeper and deeper into the woods. She began to break branches off trees to leave a path, so her son could find his way back home. As he put her down onto the pile of leaves, she told him to follow the path of twigs. He looked back down the path and looked at his hopeless mother and lifted her back onto his back. He couldn't believe the kind act from his mother, so he took her back home. When he arrived, he told the emperor his story and the emperor listened to his story and abolished the cruel order. There are three characters. The emperor is a cruel absolute leader, a warrior who declared the decree to have the old folk abandoned and left to die. He feels that the older folk do not contribute, are not strong, and they have no use to the community.
