Introduction
Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) affect over 1.7 million patients each year, causing almost
100,000 deaths annually in the United States alone (Johnson, 2010). According to the World Health
Organization, HAIs are the most frequent adverse event in the healthcare industry. Fortunately, most
of these infections can be prevented with one single intervention, proper hand hygiene ("The
Evidence," n.d.). Four out of five pathogens that cause illness are spread by direct contact. Proper
hand hygiene eliminates these pathogens and helps to prevent cross–contamination and HAIs
(Linton, 2015; "Hand Hygiene," n.d.). Reduction of cross–contamination and HAIs improves patient
outcomes, increases employee wellness, and lowers health care costs. Adherence to proper hand
hygiene is the single most important safety measure in the health care setting. However, for many
years compliance to proper hand hygiene in the healthcare industry has been dismally low. New and
inventive measures must be implemented to increase compliance to proper hand hygiene and lower
the rate of hospital–acquired infections.

The audience was made up of 18 young children, ages five to ten, and the topic was the importance
of proper hand hygiene in order to prevent infection. The groups were dived in two and the session
lasted about 30 minutes for every group. The total cost of the teaching was $69.00. A Glitter Bug
Hand wash station with UV light and fluorescent lotion was borrowed. The presentation was
supported with pamphlets, hand sanitizer and the Glitter Bug Hand wash station with UV light and
fluorescent lotion, orange color and by the teacher explaining and demonstrating proper hand

Abstract
Among all nursing students and the majority of healthcare professionals, hand hygiene is understood
to be a simple and important method of reducing nosocomial infections among patients. The
guidelines stated by the CDC delineate specific, step–by–step recommendations in order to perform
adequate handwashing. Though it may be proven and well understood, the actual compliance
demonstrated by healthcare workers is severely lacking. The purpose of this literature review is to
identify methods that help ensure continued compliance in reducing the transmission of
communicable diseases via adequate handwashing. Approximately four research articles were
selected to provide an overview of various methods used to promoting handwashing compliance.
The methods used in selecting these articles were as follows: hand hygiene, improve compliance,
and nursing. Articles older than seven years were excluded. An exception was made for an
electronic publication detailing the history of infection control and asepsis; this was strictly chosen
for its content despite being published in 2005. The following outcomes which may yield positive
results were identified: increased education, implementing friendly reminders throughout the
facility, installing additional handwashing stations or appropriate substitutes such as alcohol–based

The hands of a dental professional is of one's most important asset; therefore, hand care should be
essential in every practice. Hand care includes hand hygiene (hand–washing and hand antisepsis), as
well as, maintaining one's skin integrity (Govoni, 2012). Hand hygiene is considered to be the most
critical infection control measure in the prevention of transmitting potential pathogenic
microorganisms to patients and dental professionals. In order to maintain skin integrity, the proper
selection of hand care products is vital in prevention of possible irritation, dryness, discomfort, or
damage of the skin. Discomfort of the skin due to irritation can result in noncompliance to the
recommended hand hygiene practices. Effective hand hygiene not only protects patients, but also
dental professionals.
Hands are the most common reservoir for transmittable microbes and bacteria. The microorganisms
that exist on the hands of a dental care worker include both transient and resident (normal) flora.
These microorganisms are found on the superficial and innermost layers of the skin. Transient flora
is found on the surface layer of the skin and includes microorganisms that can be readily eliminated
or deactivated using appropriate hand hygiene techniques (Fluent, 2013). It is important that dental
health care workers protect themselves from these microorganisms by wearing gloves when
handling contaminated dental instruments, tissue, body fluids, or surfaces. However, it is critical to
note that gloves are not substitutes for any hand hygiene procedures and should be replaced
throughout a dental procedure if soiled. Hands should be washed with soap and water after removal
of gloves to help remove any microbes that may have penetrated through a defective glove. In
contrast, microorganisms that reside in the deeper layers of the skin contain normal flora, which are
naturally occurring and generally not associated in disease transmission. The ultimate goal of
improved hand hygiene in a dental setting is microbial reduction, by removing transient flora from

The table displays the relationship between hand size and grip strength. The smallest hand size also
shows the weakest grip strength, while the biggest hand size shows the strongest grip strength.
Figure 1: Displays the average grip strength for ten seconds depending on hand size. The bigger the
hand size the greater grip strength. As displayed in figure 1, as hand size increases so does grip
strength. The Figure above shows the relationship between hand size and grip strength.
As displayed in Figure 1 and Table 1, hand size plays a positive role in grip strength. Hand size was
measured wrist to the top of the middle finger. The data trend above was analyzed by using a
correlation analysis. Above shows the significant correlation between hand size and grip strength.
For example, the correlation was .906 and the P was 0.00004882 which means the two factors are
closely impacted upon each other. The smaller the number the better since that means it is more
significant. Figure 1 and Table 1 reflect on my hypothesis and make it true since the bigger the hand
the stronger grip strength.

Summary of the Experiment
The rubber hand illusion was first invented by two psychiatrists from the University of Pittsburgh,
Mathew Botwinck and Jonathan Cohen, in 1998 (Davis, P.160). This experiment demonstrates the
feeling of ownership. The experiment was conducted using a visible fake rubber hand, which was
placed in front of the participant's real hand, which was occluded. Upon stroking both the real and
fake hands using paintbrushes in the same way the participant may feel as if the rubber hand was
their actual hand. The participants recorded the subjective difference of owning the rubber hand if
the stroking of the paintbrush was synchronous. The probability of accepting to own the rubber hand
was low when the stroking was not synchronous. This experiment describes two significant aspects,
which include the body image and body schema. The body image is an individual conscious idea of
what their bodies look like on the outside, while body schema describes how the body feels like
when the eyes are shut. The use of the rubber hand in the experiment brings up the idea of how the

discuss how a nurse named Sophie helps mentor a new CNA staff member to the team by

had to be delay since operating rooms were full and "there are only enough nurses available to cover

How important is hand hygiene when it comes to caring for our patients? Is there any information
regarding whether it benefits the patient or not? Is our current way of teaching staff members
efficient enough in regards to preventing infections for not just themselves but again for our
patients? The purpose behind this proposal is to facilitate and reinforce the current teachings we
have put forth in regards to educating our medical staff about proper hand hygiene and its

infection in healthcare facilities (Centers for Disease, 2015). An outpatient dialysis facility noted
that staff was very complacent about hand hygiene. The Joint Commission National Patient Safety
Goal 7 (JCPSG) states" that healthcare organizations must perform an accurate "baseline assessment
of hand hygiene in order to identify opportunities for improvement" (The Joint Commission, 2016).

There are a few differences between the social hand wash and the surgical hand wash, the social
hand wash takes less time and is focussed around the hands whereas the surgical hand wash takes
longer and includes a larger surface area, also different solutions are used. (Denham, 2007)
Kampf and Ostermyer (2011, cited in Ghorbani et al 2011:67) have concluded that 'alcoholic
solutions are more effective than other solutions'. Alcohol based rub has a few benefits over soap
and water and can be used without having a fresh supply of water, there is also no need for sinks and
it is easier to perform (Timby, 2009). CCAR (2007) states that the use of alcohol hand rub requires
less time and acts faster because it can be used whilst walking, this means staff can use their time
more efficiently. CCAR (2007:1) also specified a method of how to use the alcohol rub – all
jewellery must be removed (jewellery is difficult to clean and bacteria will still be lingering on it),
hands need to be visibly clean, if they are not then the social hand wash needs to be completed, '1 to
2 pumps' of the alcohol rub should be enough to cover the hands. This should then be spread over all
surfaces of the hands, making sure finger tips, between fingers, back of hands and base of thumbs
