Gothic Elements In Halloween
John Carpenter's Halloween is an example of what a great film composer can achieve with any
budget. When it comes to film genres, Halloween has to be one of the greatest examples of what a
horror movie is. Throughout the film, many of the story elements can easily be seen contributing to
the idea of what makes a film fit in the horror genre. There are many horror films that stray quite far
from the basic idea of what a horror film usually is; however, Halloween is a great example of
classic horror. Typically, horror films have a set of basic guidelines or expectations that can be seen
portrayed; such examples of what is to be expected in a horror film would be the presentation of a
'monster' or something that violates the natural world in a perverse way, something that is unknown,
or that a monster is unintentionally unleashed, and the film takes place in creepy setting or suburban
neighborhood/summer camp (slasher sub–genre). In Halloween, Carpenter brilliantly matched his
film to the genre guidelines of horror. The variety of ways he did this can be seen in the presence of
an unknown being which extends human knowledge, introduce the killer into the story by an
accidental release from a facility, and depict the sub–genre horror being a slasher film. Throughout
the film, the killer (Michael Myers) haunts Laura and her friends. Michael displays traits of a
supernatural being. This follows the guidelines of the 'monster' or object of horror crossing the line

Persuasive Essay On Pitbulls
In Oakdale, a very mysterious town, there's a game. Once every year on Friday the 13th, a cute
decent looking house full of cute puppies opens. But don't be fooled by the cuteness this house
gives. Because if you go inside, you're most likely to die. The goal of the game is to find the hidden
dog treats for the puppies before they turn into bloody and deadly Pitbull's. If you fail, you become
one of the treats. All of the people that have competed in this game has become a dog treat and will
stay like that until someone wins and saves them. But it is up to whomever wins what they want to
do. Do they want to save the people or keep them to suffer forever? Therefore, most of the time, no
one wants to volunteer to play the game because most likely you might fail. Oakdale had lost hope.
Until one gloomy afternoon on Friday 13th, someone stepped up. No one knew this guy or who he
was. They had never seen him before. He was a very mysterious 20 year old wearing a black suit.
Black pants, white shirt, black tie. He chose to play on one condition only. No one knew his identity
nor who he was and he wanted to keep it that way. The people of Oakdale found it to be very odd
but they were in no place to give this guy up. So they decided to name him Anonymous. You have
10 minutes to play and find the dog treats and save the people. But there's a twist. You need to get
those treats out the door before you turn into one. Anonymous stood outside the door waiting to hear
the sound that meant he could go inside that house and risk everything. Anonymous had no emotion.
Serious face, stern eyes, straight look. Like he knew exactly what he was doing. The doorbell rang
and the door opened. The clock started ticking and he could go inside whenever he was ready. But
the less time you waste the better. Anonymous spent 1 minute outside staring at the door.
Contemplating whether or not he should go in. He knew he couldn't back out now so he went inside.
Inside did not look like what he expected. Everything was white, the walls, floors, couches, etc. He
noticed that there were no stairs nor windows. Anonymous looked down and saw 10 puppies
standing by his feet. 10 cute, little, light brown golden retrievers. Their big, innocent eyes

The Urban Legend of Bloody Mary Essay
Bloody Mary Version 3
The story of Bloody Mary is told in different versions all around the world has been included in nine
different movies (three in the past two years) (The Internet Movie Database). This particular version
of the popular urban legend of Bloody Mary originates locally from North Potomac, Maryland. The
storyteller is a female 19–year–old Caucasian sophomore student, currently studying psychology at
the University. The story was collected in the spring on the University campus. After dinner, in a
one–on–one environment, she began the story of an urban legend from her childhood.
I remember this from back in second grade. It scared me so much.
It was Friday the 13th. Back in elementary school, we always ... Show more content on

The stories that speak of Bloody Mary's origins, surprisingly, tend to be more similar on their
history of the ghost than the accounts of ghost summoning ritual.
One full version of the urban legend posted on urbanlegendsonline.com begins with a little girl
named Mary who became ill and fell into a deep coma (Urban Legends & Superstitions). The doctor
and family members, believing she was dead, buried her alive in a family plot next to their house.
The first night, Mary's mother heard a scream from Mary's grave, but no one else believed her. Days
later, the family finally dug up young Mary's grave to find Mary dead along with scratches on the
top of the coffin. Mary's fingernails were also covered in blood.
This version of the tale is similar to the version given by the storyteller at the beginning of this
article. Both accounts speak of a girl named Mary who was buried alive. The version offered by the
storyteller tells of a hateful motive that led to the return of the vengeful spirit. The version given by
urbanlegendsonline.com explains that what had happened was an accident due to negligence.
The second half the urban legend, or in most cases, the entire urban legend itself, tends to be much
more varied in explaining how to summon the ghost. The simple organization of these variations
leads to easily comparable details of the ghost story. Certain instructions require the date to be
Friday the 13th, while others do not.

The Hunger Games-Personal Narrative
I then replied It was the year 2000 when we got our first PlayStation. I was ten years old and boy
was I a tom boy. All I wanted to do was play rough and get dirty. One afternoon I saw my mom
playing something on the tv that was interesting. It was Resident evil.
The scariest thing I had ever seen as a kid next to Freddy Krueger. It's a game about zombies eating
people. I really wasn't into being scared of stuff but there was something about this game I just
couldn't turn away from. Just when I thought I was scared to the point of no return I would be right
back at it watching my mom play. It was like my little reward every day if I was lucky.
I use to set up and watch her play for hours at a time. I would come home from school and do ...

I even ate dinner while watching. Of course I would jump and cover my eyes at times, but I just
couldn't stop watching. Some nights I even had night mares about the boss of the game getting me.
Talk about a scary game but I love it still. As time went on I really looked forward to watching my
mom game. She was really good at it; she didn't really die much while playing. The more I watched
the less scared I was. At this point I felt that I've seen the worst that could happen. Plus, it sunk in
that it was just a video game. So naturally the less scared I was the want to play it myself grew. but
first I had to concur a whole other fear. The fear to ask me mom could I play. Once over the
weekend I asked my mom could I play. To which she answered yes. I was super excited and couldn't
wait to see what it was like. I'm telling you as a kid back then some games were really hard to get.
For the longest I couldn't even walk a straight line. I would zing a zang.
Shoot at the ground and sky. I couldn't even tell you how many times I died. With a lot of practice
and help from my mom I started to catch on. Soon enough I was pretty good! My

It was five minutes to 11:00PM on Friday the 13th, and Dr. Jordan Alexander stood at the unit
secretary's desk in the emergency room of San Antonio Memorial Hospital. She sipped her iced
coffee and casually glanced at her watch, waiting for her shift to begin. So far, it was quiet, but like
most overnight shifts, that was bound to change in a heartbeat.
She wondered when the hell T.C., fellow ER doctor and ex–boyfriend, would actually show up. He
did the same thing every night – he tore into the hospital at the last second like his ass was on fire,
looking like he'd just rolled out of bed. Or crawled out of a gutter. Jordan hoped tonight he would
not show up reeking of perfume, which he had last night. That had been a stark reminder that ...

I still love you, she thought, but instead, she stared into his brown eyes, hoping her posture appeared
nonchalant. "Yep. Flagrant idiot."
"Right," T.C. drawled. "Thanks for the support."
He winked at her, gave Topher the finger again, then stalked off to see his first patient.
"I hope your triskaidekaphobia doesn't bite you in your spandex–covered ass tonight!" Topher called
after him. "Try not to cry since it's Friday the 13th, okay? Do you need tissues to go along with your
pink tutu, I mean, shorts? Want me to bring you to the petting zoo after work to make it okay again,
princess?"
T.C. spun around, flashed a grin, and mouthed "fuck you," while still smiling.
Even when T.C. was cursing and dressed like a fool, Jordan loved him. She wondered if her feelings
would ever fade, but that did not seem possible. They'd been through so much together, his
deployments to Afghanistan, his PTSD treatment, her pregnancy loss... How had it all fallen apart?
Jordan allowed herself to wallow in despair for one more moment, then grabbed her first chart.

absolutely quick to come with a new idea. They took the metal sheets and the empty bottles and
placed them out in the sun. On the metal sheets, they placed snow that would eventually melt and
drain straight into the bottle. For food, on the other hand, was a greater struggle. For the food, they

Personal Narrative: The Tunnel
January 13th, 1989, snow covered the ground, the sun was bright and warm in the afternoon sky,
and the air was a tolerable temperature for that Friday the 13th of January. I was 8, my brother
Dallas was 13 and our friend David was 12. Fresh off the school bus and full of energy that
afternoon we were in no way ready to go home, so we headed to the nearby creek. The three of us
started off slow and cautious on the thick ice. We walked through the tunnel that ran under the
paved main road above, and a short distance to the other side. Then we turned around and headed
back. We ventured farther on the east side of the tunnel because that was on the housing side of the
road. Large trees, no houses, and secluded a bit from the feeling of safety welcomed you to the west
of the tunnel.
Brushing safety concerns aside and a few more passes on the ice, making sure to stomp around to
test ice thickness, we trusted the creek wouldn't hurt us after all it was Friday the 13th, and the
creek's name, Devils Creek seriously what could go wrong?Irony at its finest. The starting point was
about 20 feet on the east side of the tunnel, through the tunnel, stopping about 5 feet on the west
side, and turning back. We timed each other, raced and other various challenges on the ice. This

brother was alive. She stroked my hair and replied "yes honey, he is going to be ok". My next
question and completely logical for an 8–year–old was, "Did they cut off his leg?". Mom softly
responded, "No, honey, his leg is still attached and he will be coming home tonight". I cried again at

The Winchester house is one of the oddest and one of most haunted houses in the world. It is located

because her family made the Winchester repeating rifle known as "The gun that won the west". The
house has 160 rooms and there are spirits in each room. The builders had to keep remaking rooms
that if Mrs. Winchester kept them all she would have 600 rooms. So when they were done with the
house, which took over 30 years to make, there were stairs that led to the ceiling and doors that led
to walls. When they were done building, the head builder said that the people who were killed by
the rifle would haunt her. And Mrs. Winchester over reacted and added

Fate Definition
I do believe there is good and bad luck. It's like Karma, do good, and good will come around. Do
bad, and it will come back and screw you over. I believe in good luck because if you have a lucky
shirt or even a pencil something like that, it will bring good luck. And you can have bad luck by
having a black cat crossing your path. Or breaking a mirror and you'd have 7 years of bad luck.
Many baseball fans believe if you do good to someone else, then they team you want to win bring
good luck. It may be a suspicion, but it's a superstition I believe in.
Fate is the power of what happens in the future. Everyone's fate is to meet Death. But fate can be
meeting your true love, or even a best friend. It was fate for me to meet Blake, one of my best
friends, which would have never happened if I met one of my other friend's, friends. And I almost
didn't meet them that day. Me and Blake has impacted each others lives, and that would have never
happened if it wasn't for fate. One of my friends, had fate in her life too, when she came ... Show

Friday The 13 Research Paper
Friday May 13th, 2016 is a date that I will remember well into my future–perhaps even my entire
life. Ironically, Friday the 13th is a date that Americans often associate with misfortune or "bad
luck." In Italy, the number thirteen is considered to be a very "lucky" number, and the date Friday
the 13th does not bear any special significance to Italians. Put differently, Friday the 13th and the
number thirteen are viewed in different parts of the world in completely contrasting ways–the date
and number are conditional based upon one's perception. To a superstitious American, Friday the
13th might be a date on which one will ensure that he/she takes extra caution in his/her daily
endeavors and especially avoid walking beneath ladders or breaking mirrors. To a superstitious
Italian, Friday the 13th might be considered the perfect date to take a chance by playing the lottery
or making a trip to a casino, with the hopes that luck will be abundant on this particular date. The
point is, Friday the 13th and the number thirteen do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Fear Of Friday The 13th Paraskavedekatriphobia
Approximately every 212 days Friday the 13th occurs, while some may stay in bed all day to avoid
the bad luck, others will embrace it and joke about the superstitions. Friday the 13th has many
superstitions around the day. Some fear the day Friday, others may ear the number 13, while others
fear the combination of Friday and 13. Psychologists have named the fear of Friday the 13th
paraskavedekatriaphobia. Many have a fear of this day from myths, religious beliefs, and even
human research.
One origin of the superstition of Friday the 13th occur due to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. In
his book on Friday 13, October 1307 hundreds of Knights Templar were arrested and burnt across
France. Knights Templar were a religious group of unmarried men who came together to protect
Christians during the Crusades. Christians then began showing thanks through giving them their
land and money which made the kings very wealthy. 1307 French King Phillip IV was running out
of money so he decided to go after the Templars money. He accused the men of heresy and arrested
them. A popular theory is that the Templars discovered the Holy Grail or a unorthodox religious
secret. Another popular theory is that Templars became the Freemasons.
A religious superstition of Friday the 13th is Catholic belief. Judas, an apostle that was said to
betray Jesus was the 13th guest at the Last Supper. Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday. The
combination of 13 on a Friday causes Catholics to be very fearful

Overall this film had nothing special, no continaution from the past films. While entertaining, but it

[1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and
again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who
hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or
teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a
female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed
to acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and believed to be in need of saving. Mark Jancovich
stated that "it may be useful to make a distinction between the beauty and the beast in the horror
film" suggesting that women should be beautiful whilst the beast is gruesome and frightening. [2]
Other films such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980) 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2012) and 'Scream' (1997).
By comparing a mixture of old and more recent slasher films that involve similar storylines helps
build an understanding on why only females seem to prevail and men fall at the last hurdle. Using a
variety of theories that explore the representation of women and being able to contradict ideas.
An essential element in slasher films is the 'final–girl' – this refers to the "last woman alive to

Allan Poe's Impact On Modern American Horror
Their has many movies viewed by movie buff, and the purpose has just been for entertainment and
passing time during the dead of the night. The true meaning of a film will never be viewed the same
when it is inspired by researching author of the story line to understand why base a movie or movies

meaning than; What's the story line? Who's the good guy and who's the bad guy? How good is
action and graphics? This will be a new challenge, to critique couple of movies, and research the
true meaning of the story, and how it can be viewed differently by society if one take the time to

The Madina Collection of Islamic Art at the LACMA Essay
The Madina Collection of Islamic Art at the LACMA
Introduction The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) announced recently that it had
acquired "the remarkable Madina Collection of Islamic art. The collection contains works of various
media dating from the late 7th through 19th centuries from the vast areas that comprise the Islamic
world, from Southern Spain to Central Asia" (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2005). While the
museum already had quite an extensive collection of Islamic art, this particular exhibit truly adds the

There is a finial from the 14th century Northern Iran, perhaps from Mazanderan (Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, 2005). This piece is intricately carved from wood and possesses traces of
paint (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2005). It measures 14 inches tall and 6 inches in
diameter at its widest point. It is wide at its base and tapers off, not completely to a point, at the top.
It is a very solid as well as very patterned piece of art, or architecture. Like the previous items
discussed or examined, it seems to have a very symmetrical feel to it, as there is not necessarily a
picture to be seen, but a repetitive element that is seen throughout the piece, or all around the piece
in this case. The carving appears to be open carving in that there are holes in the finial where there is
no wood as part of the carved out design. This piece can be viewed at the following website:

Examples Of Superstition In Huckleberry Finn
In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there are many themes that are present throughout the novel.
Some themes include, the defining of honor, religion/the mockery of religion, slavery and the racial
division, etc. Although there are many themes in this novel only one is present throughout the entire
book, and that is the theme of superstition. The theme of superstition in Mark Twain's novel,
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is common. Twain is showing that getting away from society, as
symbolized by superstition in the novel, can protect Huck and Jim from the threat religion acquires.
Huck uses his superstitious beliefs to help "protect" himself and to fend for himself. In the
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, one morning, Huck accidentally knocks over a saltcellar. He
reaches for some salt to throw over his shoulder to ward off bad spirits and bad luck. In ancient
Egypt and ancient Greece they believed that evil spirits dwelt on the left hand side of the body, so
they threw salt over their left shoulder to ward them off, as shown in the picture. ... Show more

Misconceptions In The Woods Book Report
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WOODS... Once there was a girl named Malarie. She lived in an old
rickety house outside the woods. She always thought her house was haunted. One day, she found a
book about her house, and discovered that it wasn't her house that was haunted, but the woods. She
was terrified because she always went into the woods to escape the ghost she thought was in her
house. The book said that whoever went into the woods on Friday the 13th would be the ghost's next
victim and would be left to roam the woods alone forever. She started hearing a little voice,
"Malarie," it said. "Come out to the woods." Malarie was almost to the woods when she realized

But the ghost was just getting ready to repeat the process. It produced an even longer and more

knowing it wouldn't fail this time, approached Malarie even slower than before. The ghost took this
knife, pushed into the bottom of her stomach and pulled it up until it hit her throat. The ghost
backed away from the bleeding body of it's victim, laughing. Malarie woke again, but this time she
was able to stand easily. There was no sign of the ghost. She looked around and saw her body lying
on the forest floor. She didn't know why she could see her body, but then she realized she must be a
ghost. She tried to fly away, out of the woods, but wherever she went, whenever she reached the
edge of the woods, something would push her back. Malarie knew there had to be some sort of

Cinderella Stereotypes
All eyes are on Halloween costumes worn by kids and adults alike for the October 31 event. Year in
and year out, the holiday brings out ghoulish costumes of zombies, vampires, ghosts, witches, and
other macabre creatures.
However, some revelers opt to wear the clothes of movie or cartoon characters such as Captain
Hook, Belle or Aladdin. But some experts frown on princess costumes for little girls, Fortune
reported.
Stereotype female behavior
The objection of Sarah Coyne, a family life professor at the Brigham Young University, is that the
more the children watched Disney movies with princess characters and played with princess
products, the more the girls likely were to display stereotype female behavior. It is manifested in the
girls not being confident in math and science. They also do not like getting dirty.
Coyne, who did a study on the behaviors of 198 pre–schoolers, agrees with the observation of
author Peggy Orenstein, who wrote "Cinderella Ate My Daughter." The 2011 book stated that the
obsession of young girls with princesses is unnatural. Orenstein said that it is the result of
aggressive marketing strategies of Disney.
Rebecca Hains, the assistant director of the Center for Childhood and Youth Studies at Salem
University, added that the Disney princess brand suggests that the most important asset of a girl is
her beauty. It will encourage her to have an unhealthy preoccupation with physical appearance.
Another implication of the brand is that she must be sweet

The Symmetry454 Curricular Calendar
Symmetry454 Calendar Ever wonder what it would be like to use the same calendar year after year

The Symnnetry454 Calendar that's being planned to replace the Gregorian calendar can establish all
that! Soon, Friday the 13th won't be a day of bad luck for anyone very again. The Symmetry454
calendar is proposed by Dr. Irv Bromberg, who always wondered how we could get rid of our
"yearly" calendars and instead have a "permanent" calendar. In this solar calendar, every year
contains the same days, on the same time in the week, in the same month. Every year and every
month start on a Monday and end on a Sunday, following a simple 454–month/quarter ... Show

The moon or the stars do not play a role in this calendar. Since the March equinox (mean
astronomical northward equinoctial year) is slowly drifting towards earlier dates in March while the
Earth's revolutions and rotations, especially the precession of the equinoxes, are slowly changing the
tilt of Earth's axis, the rate of the equinox drift will increase in the years to come. In order to address
this problem, and align the Sun and the Earth's orbits, the Symmetry454 calendar has a simple 293–
year cycle with 52 leap weeks, resulting in the proper alignment for the next 4000 years in respect to
the March equinox, the Sun, and the Earth. This symmetrical leap rule of the 293–year leap cycle
results in long–term symmetry to the calendar, allowing the precise timing of the Northward
equinox to consistently fall in the first year of every 293–year cycle. Within each repeating leap
cycle, the same set of years are the "leap year" years. Having 52 weeks in a regular year allows for
this calendar to be perpetual, meaning it starts on the same weekday every year, as well as
preserving the traditional 7–day week cycle. The way that this is accomplished by this calendar is to
include a leap week at the end of every 5th or 6th year, during the month of December. This leap
week insures that day and week number will stay constant within the years. This leap also ensures
that the Orbit of the sun and Earth stay relatively fixed and synchronized with the seasons over
many centuries. The Epoch of this calendar is the same date as that of the Gregorian calendar,
falling on Monday, January 1 of the year 1 AD. Lastly, because no Friday will fall on the 13th of a
month in the whole year, there's no more bad luck for

Horror Movies : The Horror Movie Genre
From people gathered around a campfire telling scary stories to people gathered in a crowded

something. Horror movies specifically slasher movies do more than just entertain us in their way,
they also warn us to be aware of what we're doing or our surroundings. In most slasher films, there
are certain scenarios that have been repeated and copied from the beginning of the genre. Because
of the numerous imitations by other films in the past and the present the themes put forth in ground

The Importance Of Superstitions In History
Throughout history, many superstitions have grown ranging from not opening an umbrella inside, to
seeing a black cat crosses in front of you. Some of these traditions we pass on today may seem crazy
and we could wonder who came up with these insane ideas. Although the superstitions may not be
completely sound they all have an explanation in history. One of the most well–known superstitions
would be triskaidekaphobia, or a fear of the number 13. This might seem irrational, but it has a basis
in religious history and in many cultures throughout the ancient world. I believe that this fear may
have some basis in fact, however strange, and to prove this we will look at this superstitions basis in
ancient history, its basis in religious history, and how it plays out in our culture today.
To start, we can look at how it has a basis in ancient history. One of the first items of proof for these
superstitions would be all the way back in Hammurabi's code. Supposedly in ancient times the
number thirteen was unlucky so in his code of laws the number 13 was omitted. However, if you
look at the original text the laws themselves were not numerically ordered, so likely this was just an
error in translation or an error by the original writer. Another area where this superstition may have
started would be with the order of The Knights Templar. On Friday, October 13, 1307 King Phillip
IV ordered the arrest and murder of The Knights Templar. After the arrest the knights were tortured

Adnan's Guilty Analysis
From the evidence presented in the podcast and by the witnesses who claim to have seen Adnan
Syed who can come to the conclusion that these alibis are not valid because of inconsistencies and
errors in the case. When it comes to Adnan's supposed alibi at the library, there are several errors
that invalidate Adnan's possible alibi. Asia Mcclain claims that "she specifically remembers me
being at the library, at the public library, right after school." (Koenig 1) But the problem with that is
later after she had written the affidavit for the trial, Asia invalidated her original statement. "Asia
had called one of the prosecutors in Adnan's case, a guy named Kevin Urick, and undermined her
own statement." (Koenig 1) According to Kevin Urick, "She was concerned, because she was being
asked questions about an affidavit she'd ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She told me that she'd only written it because she was getting pressure from the family, and she
basically wrote it to please them and get them off her back." (Koenig 1) While discussing the alibi in
the podcast Sarah Koenig came to the conclusion of, "Because if he was, library equals innocent. It's
so maddeningly simple." She's right, it is so maddeningly simple because from the invalidated alibi,
we can significantly prove that Adnan was not at the library but instead committing the murder of
Hae Min Lee.
Although you can claim the possible invalidation of Adnan's alibi, there is substantial and
undeniable evidence from other people supplying alibi's that proves that Adnan's alibi is not
invalidated. In contrast to the possible invalidation of Adnan's alibi, Adnan could have been at the
library all afternoon as well as Hae at the school since the state's timeline has some errors. So if we
assume that Adnan was at the public library from 2:15–3:30 and at track practice from 3:30– to
about 4:30 or 5:30 like he claims in his timeline, then we know that it is impossible for him to have

Examples Of Superstition In Friday The 13th
Friday the 13th. Many people around the world are overly superstitious when it comes to this day as
they believe this day is extremely unlucky and usually refrain from doing things of importance on
this day. This belief can be traced back to 1907 when author Thomas William Lawson put together
the notion of unlucky Friday and unlucky 13 with the novel Friday the 13th. However, this
widespread superstition was popularized decades after The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was
published. Despite that, there are still a numerous amount of irrationalities in the novel. One of the
themes that Mark Twain explores in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is superstition. Three examples
that support this theme are the wart cure, stray dog, and the rat dream. The first example that
supports the theme of superstition in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the wart cure.
In the story, Tom asks Huck what a dead cat can do where Huck responds that it can cure warts:

and gullible since he instantly accepts the fact that a dead cat can cure warts without question.
Twain believes that all children like Tom are ridiculous and full of nonsense for believing in almost
anything they hear. Most people would have to agree with Twain as kids often make up and believe
in many supernatural happenings such as "Bloody Mary." As the reader can see, superstition is
widely found in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and such superstition is not just confined to story as
there are also numerous examples of it

Teal Pumpkin Project Activities
A bit of wind did not stop over 200 people from visiting the Norman Farm Market's second annual
teal trick–or–treat night Tuesday evening. The event, which took place during the market's typical
Tuesday hours, was an inclusive Halloween celebration for kids of all ages. Visitors of all ages were
encouraged to dress in costume for the festivities. Barrel train rides, a petting zoo and games were
offered in addition to the usual market activities. The Norman fire department even made an
appearance, offering a tour of one of their trucks. Vendors got in on the Halloween action, too,
dressing up and handing out treats to children. Not all of the goodies were typical Halloween
candies, however. As a Teal Pumpkin Project® event, some merchants

The Power of Superstition Essays
The Power of Superstition
A superstition is the belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic
or chance, or a false conception of causation. Superstition is also an irrational abject attitude of mind
toward the supernatural, nature, or God or a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary
(Merriam–Webster). Superstitions are the most common relic of the past handed down from the
ages. When & where did superstition come from? There is an abundance of superstitions to date.
Basic superstitions can be broken down into three broad categories: Predictive, Causative and
Conversion. Predictive superstitions are when people believe that a particular superstition will
predict an oncoming event. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The history of superstition states that the ladder and ground forms a triangle representing a holy
symbol from Egyptian times or a holy trinity from Christianity, therefore, by walking through the
triangle is denoted as bad luck (Origin).
Throwing salt over your left shoulder is the most known conversion superstition. Throwing salt over
your left shoulder diverts the bad luck; you received when you spilt the salt. This superstition started
in 1881, it states you have spilt salt on the table, and then thrown over your left shoulder the bad
luck is averted (Opie, Tatem 343).
Another common superstition is Friday the 13th. Many reasons exist for why Friday the 13th was
deemed to be unlucky. It is believed to have started at the expelling of Adam & Eve from Garden of
Eden. People believe that they were sent from paradise on Friday.
It is also believe that the Noah's flood started and Jesus was crucified on a Friday. It is also known
that there were 13 at the Last Supper when Judas betrayed Jesus. Judas was the thirteenth guest at
the table for the Last Supper (Origin).
Friday is regarded to be the most superstitious day compared to all of the other days of the week.

Gothic Elements In Halloween

  • 1. Gothic Elements In Halloween John Carpenter's Halloween is an example of what a great film composer can achieve with any budget. When it comes to film genres, Halloween has to be one of the greatest examples of what a horror movie is. Throughout the film, many of the story elements can easily be seen contributing to the idea of what makes a film fit in the horror genre. There are many horror films that stray quite far from the basic idea of what a horror film usually is; however, Halloween is a great example of classic horror. Typically, horror films have a set of basic guidelines or expectations that can be seen portrayed; such examples of what is to be expected in a horror film would be the presentation of a 'monster' or something that violates the natural world in a perverse way, something that is unknown, or that a monster is unintentionally unleashed, and the film takes place in creepy setting or suburban neighborhood/summer camp (slasher sub–genre). In Halloween, Carpenter brilliantly matched his film to the genre guidelines of horror. The variety of ways he did this can be seen in the presence of an unknown being which extends human knowledge, introduce the killer into the story by an accidental release from a facility, and depict the sub–genre horror being a slasher film. Throughout the film, the killer (Michael Myers) haunts Laura and her friends. Michael displays traits of a supernatural being. This follows the guidelines of the 'monster' or object of horror crossing the line what is known ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Persuasive Essay On Pitbulls In Oakdale, a very mysterious town, there's a game. Once every year on Friday the 13th, a cute decent looking house full of cute puppies opens. But don't be fooled by the cuteness this house gives. Because if you go inside, you're most likely to die. The goal of the game is to find the hidden dog treats for the puppies before they turn into bloody and deadly Pitbull's. If you fail, you become one of the treats. All of the people that have competed in this game has become a dog treat and will stay like that until someone wins and saves them. But it is up to whomever wins what they want to do. Do they want to save the people or keep them to suffer forever? Therefore, most of the time, no one wants to volunteer to play the game because most likely you might fail. Oakdale had lost hope. Until one gloomy afternoon on Friday 13th, someone stepped up. No one knew this guy or who he was. They had never seen him before. He was a very mysterious 20 year old wearing a black suit. Black pants, white shirt, black tie. He chose to play on one condition only. No one knew his identity nor who he was and he wanted to keep it that way. The people of Oakdale found it to be very odd but they were in no place to give this guy up. So they decided to name him Anonymous. You have 10 minutes to play and find the dog treats and save the people. But there's a twist. You need to get those treats out the door before you turn into one. Anonymous stood outside the door waiting to hear the sound that meant he could go inside that house and risk everything. Anonymous had no emotion. Serious face, stern eyes, straight look. Like he knew exactly what he was doing. The doorbell rang and the door opened. The clock started ticking and he could go inside whenever he was ready. But the less time you waste the better. Anonymous spent 1 minute outside staring at the door. Contemplating whether or not he should go in. He knew he couldn't back out now so he went inside. Inside did not look like what he expected. Everything was white, the walls, floors, couches, etc. He noticed that there were no stairs nor windows. Anonymous looked down and saw 10 puppies standing by his feet. 10 cute, little, light brown golden retrievers. Their big, innocent eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Urban Legend of Bloody Mary Essay Bloody Mary Version 3 The story of Bloody Mary is told in different versions all around the world has been included in nine different movies (three in the past two years) (The Internet Movie Database). This particular version of the popular urban legend of Bloody Mary originates locally from North Potomac, Maryland. The storyteller is a female 19–year–old Caucasian sophomore student, currently studying psychology at the University. The story was collected in the spring on the University campus. After dinner, in a one–on–one environment, she began the story of an urban legend from her childhood. I remember this from back in second grade. It scared me so much. It was Friday the 13th. Back in elementary school, we always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stories that speak of Bloody Mary's origins, surprisingly, tend to be more similar on their history of the ghost than the accounts of ghost summoning ritual. One full version of the urban legend posted on urbanlegendsonline.com begins with a little girl named Mary who became ill and fell into a deep coma (Urban Legends & Superstitions). The doctor and family members, believing she was dead, buried her alive in a family plot next to their house. The first night, Mary's mother heard a scream from Mary's grave, but no one else believed her. Days later, the family finally dug up young Mary's grave to find Mary dead along with scratches on the top of the coffin. Mary's fingernails were also covered in blood. This version of the tale is similar to the version given by the storyteller at the beginning of this article. Both accounts speak of a girl named Mary who was buried alive. The version offered by the storyteller tells of a hateful motive that led to the return of the vengeful spirit. The version given by urbanlegendsonline.com explains that what had happened was an accident due to negligence. The second half the urban legend, or in most cases, the entire urban legend itself, tends to be much more varied in explaining how to summon the ghost. The simple organization of these variations leads to easily comparable details of the ghost story. Certain instructions require the date to be Friday the 13th, while others do not. ... • 4. The Hunger Games-Personal Narrative I then replied It was the year 2000 when we got our first PlayStation. I was ten years old and boy was I a tom boy. All I wanted to do was play rough and get dirty. One afternoon I saw my mom playing something on the tv that was interesting. It was Resident evil. The scariest thing I had ever seen as a kid next to Freddy Krueger. It's a game about zombies eating people. I really wasn't into being scared of stuff but there was something about this game I just couldn't turn away from. Just when I thought I was scared to the point of no return I would be right back at it watching my mom play. It was like my little reward every day if I was lucky. I use to set up and watch her play for hours at a time. I would come home from school and do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I even ate dinner while watching. Of course I would jump and cover my eyes at times, but I just couldn't stop watching. Some nights I even had night mares about the boss of the game getting me. Talk about a scary game but I love it still. As time went on I really looked forward to watching my mom game. She was really good at it; she didn't really die much while playing. The more I watched the less scared I was. At this point I felt that I've seen the worst that could happen. Plus, it sunk in that it was just a video game. So naturally the less scared I was the want to play it myself grew. but first I had to concur a whole other fear. The fear to ask me mom could I play. Once over the weekend I asked my mom could I play. To which she answered yes. I was super excited and couldn't wait to see what it was like. I'm telling you as a kid back then some games were really hard to get. For the longest I couldn't even walk a straight line. I would zing a zang. Shoot at the ground and sky. I couldn't even tell you how many times I died. With a lot of practice and help from my mom I started to catch on. Soon enough I was pretty good! My ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. 9/11 Short Stories It was five minutes to 11:00PM on Friday the 13th, and Dr. Jordan Alexander stood at the unit secretary's desk in the emergency room of San Antonio Memorial Hospital. She sipped her iced coffee and casually glanced at her watch, waiting for her shift to begin. So far, it was quiet, but like most overnight shifts, that was bound to change in a heartbeat. She wondered when the hell T.C., fellow ER doctor and ex–boyfriend, would actually show up. He did the same thing every night – he tore into the hospital at the last second like his ass was on fire, looking like he'd just rolled out of bed. Or crawled out of a gutter. Jordan hoped tonight he would not show up reeking of perfume, which he had last night. That had been a stark reminder that ... I still love you, she thought, but instead, she stared into his brown eyes, hoping her posture appeared nonchalant. "Yep. Flagrant idiot." "Right," T.C. drawled. "Thanks for the support." He winked at her, gave Topher the finger again, then stalked off to see his first patient. "I hope your triskaidekaphobia doesn't bite you in your spandex–covered ass tonight!" Topher called after him. "Try not to cry since it's Friday the 13th, okay? Do you need tissues to go along with your pink tutu, I mean, shorts? Want me to bring you to the petting zoo after work to make it okay again, princess?" T.C. spun around, flashed a grin, and mouthed "fuck you," while still smiling. Personal Narrative: The Tunnel January 13th, 1989, snow covered the ground, the sun was bright and warm in the afternoon sky, and the air was a tolerable temperature for that Friday the 13th of January. I was 8, my brother Dallas was 13 and our friend David was 12. Fresh off the school bus and full of energy that afternoon we were in no way ready to go home, so we headed to the nearby creek. Then we turned around and headed back. We ventured farther on the east side of the tunnel because that was on the housing side of the road. Large trees, no houses, and secluded a bit from the feeling of safety welcomed you to the west of the tunnel. Ironically, Friday the 13th is a date that Americans often associate with misfortune or "bad luck." In Italy, the number thirteen is considered to be a very "lucky" number, and the date Friday the 13th does not bear any special significance to Italians. Put differently, Friday the 13th and the number thirteen are viewed in different parts of the world in completely contrasting ways–the date and number are conditional based upon one's perception. To a superstitious American, Friday the 13th might be a date on which one will ensure that he/she takes extra caution in his/her daily endeavors and especially avoid walking beneath ladders or breaking mirrors. To a superstitious Italian, Friday the 13th might be considered the perfect date to take a chance by playing the lottery or making a trip to a casino, with the hopes that luck will be abundant on this particular date. Fear Of Friday The 13th Paraskavedekatriphobia Approximately every 212 days Friday the 13th occurs, while some may stay in bed all day to avoid the bad luck, others will embrace it and joke about the superstitions. Friday the 13th has many superstitions around the day. Some fear the day Friday, others may ear the number 13, while others fear the combination of Friday and 13. Psychologists have named the fear of Friday the 13th paraskavedekatriaphobia. Many have a fear of this day from myths, religious beliefs, and even human research. One origin of the superstition of Friday the 13th occur due to Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. In his book on Friday 13, October 1307 hundreds of Knights Templar were arrested and burnt across France. Knights Templar were a religious group of unmarried men who came together to protect Christians during the Crusades. Christians then began showing thanks through giving them their land and money which made the kings very wealthy. 1307 French King Phillip IV was running out of money so he decided to go after the Templars money. He accused the men of heresy and arrested them. A popular theory is that the Templars discovered the Holy Grail or a unorthodox religious secret. Another popular theory is that Templars became the Freemasons. A religious superstition of Friday the 13th is Catholic belief. Film Review : ' Halloween ' Slasher films have been produced and released since the 1970s, with the most famous slasher film being 'Halloween' (1974), which is recorded as the 'highest–grossing independent film of all time.' [1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed to acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and believed to be in need of saving. Mark Jancovich stated that "it may be useful to make a distinction between the beauty and the beast in the horror film" suggesting that women should be beautiful whilst the beast is gruesome and frightening. [2] Other films such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980) 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2012) and 'Scream' (1997). By comparing a mixture of old and more recent slasher films that involve similar storylines helps build an understanding on why only females seem to prevail and men fall at the last hurdle. • 29. Cinderella Stereotypes All eyes are on Halloween costumes worn by kids and adults alike for the October 31 event. Year in and year out, the holiday brings out ghoulish costumes of zombies, vampires, ghosts, witches, and other macabre creatures. However, some revelers opt to wear the clothes of movie or cartoon characters such as Captain Hook, Belle or Aladdin. But some experts frown on princess costumes for little girls, Fortune reported. Stereotype female behavior The objection of Sarah Coyne, a family life professor at the Brigham Young University, is that the more the children watched Disney movies with princess characters and played with princess products, the more the girls likely were to display stereotype female behavior. It is manifested in the girls not being confident in math and science. They also do not like getting dirty. Coyne, who did a study on the behaviors of 198 pre–schoolers, agrees with the observation of author Peggy Orenstein, who wrote "Cinderella Ate My Daughter." The 2011 book stated that the obsession of young girls with princesses is unnatural. Orenstein said that it is the result of aggressive marketing strategies of Disney. Rebecca Hains, the assistant director of the Center for Childhood and Youth Studies at Salem University, added that the Disney princess brand suggests that the most important asset of a girl is her beauty. It will encourage her to have an unhealthy preoccupation with physical appearance. Another implication of the brand is that she must be sweet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. The Symmetry454 Curricular Calendar Symmetry454 Calendar Ever wonder what it would be like to use the same calendar year after year nonstop? How great would it be to continuously have the same dates for every holiday year by year? The Symnnetry454 Calendar that's being planned to replace the Gregorian calendar can establish all that! Soon, Friday the 13th won't be a day of bad luck for anyone very again. The Symmetry454 calendar is proposed by Dr. Irv Bromberg, who always wondered how we could get rid of our "yearly" calendars and instead have a "permanent" calendar. In this solar calendar, every year contains the same days, on the same time in the week, in the same month. Every year and every month start on a Monday and end on a Sunday, following a simple 454–month/quarter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The moon or the stars do not play a role in this calendar. Since the March equinox (mean astronomical northward equinoctial year) is slowly drifting towards earlier dates in March while the Earth's revolutions and rotations, especially the precession of the equinoxes, are slowly changing the tilt of Earth's axis, the rate of the equinox drift will increase in the years to come. In order to address this problem, and align the Sun and the Earth's orbits, the Symmetry454 calendar has a simple 293– year cycle with 52 leap weeks, resulting in the proper alignment for the next 4000 years in respect to the March equinox, the Sun, and the Earth. This symmetrical leap rule of the 293–year leap cycle results in long–term symmetry to the calendar, allowing the precise timing of the Northward equinox to consistently fall in the first year of every 293–year cycle. Within each repeating leap cycle, the same set of years are the "leap year" years. Having 52 weeks in a regular year allows for this calendar to be perpetual, meaning it starts on the same weekday every year, as well as preserving the traditional 7–day week cycle. The way that this is accomplished by this calendar is to include a leap week at the end of every 5th or 6th year, during the month of December. This leap week insures that day and week number will stay constant within the years. This leap also ensures that the Orbit of the sun and Earth stay relatively fixed and synchronized with the seasons over many centuries. The Epoch of this calendar is the same date as that of the Gregorian calendar, falling on Monday, January 1 of the year 1 AD. Lastly, because no Friday will fall on the 13th of a month in the whole year, there's no more bad luck for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scary stories were told to teach a lesson or warn someone about something. Horror movies specifically slasher movies do more than just entertain us in their way, they also warn us to be aware of what we're doing or our surroundings. In most slasher films, there are certain scenarios that have been repeated and copied from the beginning of the genre. Because of the numerous imitations by other films in the past and the present the themes put forth in ground breaking slasher movies are continually reinventing the genre and have added significantly to horror movie history. The definition of a horror film, "is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears ("Horror Films" (1))". In the beginning gothic novels by literary works by Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and Edgar Allan Poe inspired the horror movie genre. These literary works entertain us by teaching us about society or human behavior. When the Lemiere brothers created the film "Spook Tale" in 1895 it was the first telling of a scary story on film. It wasn't until 1896 when Georges Melies created the film "The Manor of the Devil" making it the first horror film some experts argue. • 35. The Importance Of Superstitions In History Throughout history, many superstitions have grown ranging from not opening an umbrella inside, to seeing a black cat crosses in front of you. Some of these traditions we pass on today may seem crazy and we could wonder who came up with these insane ideas. Although the superstitions may not be completely sound they all have an explanation in history. One of the most well–known superstitions would be triskaidekaphobia, or a fear of the number 13. This might seem irrational, but it has a basis in religious history and in many cultures throughout the ancient world. I believe that this fear may have some basis in fact, however strange, and to prove this we will look at this superstitions basis in ancient history, its basis in religious history, and how it plays out in our culture today. To start, we can look at how it has a basis in ancient history. One of the first items of proof for these superstitions would be all the way back in Hammurabi's code. Supposedly in ancient times the number thirteen was unlucky so in his code of laws the number 13 was omitted. However, if you look at the original text the laws themselves were not numerically ordered, so likely this was just an error in translation or an error by the original writer. Another area where this superstition may have started would be with the order of The Knights Templar. On Friday, October 13, 1307 King Phillip IV ordered the arrest and murder of The Knights Templar. After the arrest the knights were tortured and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Adnan's Guilty Analysis From the evidence presented in the podcast and by the witnesses who claim to have seen Adnan Syed who can come to the conclusion that these alibis are not valid because of inconsistencies and errors in the case. When it comes to Adnan's supposed alibi at the library, there are several errors that invalidate Adnan's possible alibi. Asia Mcclain claims that "she specifically remembers me being at the library, at the public library, right after school." (Koenig 1) But the problem with that is later after she had written the affidavit for the trial, Asia invalidated her original statement. "Asia had called one of the prosecutors in Adnan's case, a guy named Kevin Urick, and undermined her own statement." She told me that she'd only written it because she was getting pressure from the family, and she basically wrote it to please them and get them off her back." (Koenig 1) While discussing the alibi in the podcast Sarah Koenig came to the conclusion of, "Because if he was, library equals innocent. It's so maddeningly simple." She's right, it is so maddeningly simple because from the invalidated alibi, we can significantly prove that Adnan was not at the library but instead committing the murder of Hae Min Lee. Although you can claim the possible invalidation of Adnan's alibi, there is substantial and undeniable evidence from other people supplying alibi's that proves that Adnan's alibi is not invalidated. In contrast to the possible invalidation of Adnan's alibi, Adnan could have been at the library all afternoon as well as Hae at the school since the state's timeline has some errors. So if we assume that Adnan was at the public library from 2:15–3:30 and at track practice from 3:30– to about 4:30 or 5:30 like he claims in his timeline, then we know that it is impossible for him to have killed Hae in the best buy parking lot before ... • 37. Examples Of Superstition In Friday The 13th Friday the 13th. Many people around the world are overly superstitious when it comes to this day as they believe this day is extremely unlucky and usually refrain from doing things of importance on this day. This belief can be traced back to 1907 when author Thomas William Lawson put together the notion of unlucky Friday and unlucky 13 with the novel Friday the 13th. However, this widespread superstition was popularized decades after The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published. Despite that, there are still a numerous amount of irrationalities in the novel. One of the themes that Mark Twain explores in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is superstition. Three examples that support this theme are the wart cure, stray dog, and the rat dream. The first example that supports the theme of superstition in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the wart cure.
