Computers And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay
Computers
In between 1943 and 1946, ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at
University of Pennsylvania, U.S. ENIAC was a modular computer, collected of separate panels to
perform different functions. Twenty of these parts were accumulators, which could not only add and
subtract but hold a ten–digit decimal number in memory. Numbers were passed between these units
across several general–purpose buses. In order to achieve its high speed, the panels had to send and
receive numbers, save the answer and produce the next operation, all without any moving parts. Key
to its usefulness was the ability to branch; it could produce different operations, depending on the
sign of a computed result. ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7200 crystal diodes, 1500 relays,
70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and about 5,000,000 hand–soldered joints. It weighed more than
30 tons, was roughly 2.4m × 0.9m × 30m in size, and consumed 150 kW of electricity. This power
requirement led to the rumour that whenever the computer was switched on, lights in Philadelphia
dimmed.
UNIVAC I MAINFRAME COMPUTER

China, India and UAE are among some of the countries that have imposed regulations and monitor
the data traffic. (Jeffrey Hays, 2011) According to analysts China is now the biggest consumer of
smartphones with 640 million customers up to date and growing. Such strict regulations can prove
to be an obstacle in the short–term; however the market is too big to be ignored by all producers and
is likely to see strict compliance with the government regulatory bodies. Another concern is the
strict manufacturing codes imposed by countries in the European Union. Those are related to the
hygiene and safety standards, paying close attention to the use of toxic materials. This can put some
pressure on smaller producers, but is not likely to disturb production for key players. Social There
are several social factors which have a great impact on the smartphone and tablet industry. Those are
the lifestyle, education and income levels. For example holidays and celebrations are periods with a
higher demand for such electronic goods. The most common and easily observable period is the
Christmas one, with considerable high sales during November and December. Retailers yet to report

Computer literacy–The impact of mobile computing

Bonita Spight–Williams
September 8, 2014
Mobile computing is growing at an extremely rapid rate and you can see it everywhere you go. You
are probably doing it yourself multiple times a day and don't even realize it. Phones, laptops, tablets,
cloud storage and wireless networks that we use everyday are just a few elements of mobile
computing. A survey listed by Bowles states that 26% of smartphone users makes them feel like
they are being more productive than without them. (Bowles 2013) I can remember taking typing
class in high school and now almost every school in America issues tablets to their students.

There are a few highly advance word processing apps like Microsoft web apps, Polaris and
documents to go for the iPad. (Bowles 2013) I have used both Polaris and Microsoft but have not
tried documents to go. Polaris was extremely good on my Android Galaxy S3 smartphone and let
me do almost everything I could do at my desk out and about. I was a deployment manager for the
Air Force at the time so I always need to be able to view and edit Excel documents on the fly. It was
great to just be able to do it without having to call the office and have someone else do it or try to
make a mental note to do it later. I can say it saved my backside several times.
The iPhone was first release in 2007 and it was the first handheld device that really advanced the
web browsing experience (Newton, 2008). It was such an important event that TIME Magazine

According to Newton this also was the signal that web marketing was entering a new day and age.

TABLET PCs Combines Simplicity of Paper with Full Power of Windows–Based Computing For
the past few years, the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) has grown tremendously popular. However,
due to size restrictions, it has always served as a secondary device to the desktop computer. So a
number of hardware manufacturers unveiled a new form of communication, the Tablet PC. What
exactly is a Tablet PC? It is a notebook PC with a touch–sensitive screen and is a bit larger than the
size of a sheet of paper. Tablet PCs will have two formats: the "convertible" model with an
integrated keyboard and a display that rotates 180 degrees that can be folded down over the
keyboard, and the "slate" style with a removable keyboard. It allows ... Show more content on

Afterward, the employee returns with the numbers written on a count sheet, while another employee
inputs the counts, notes any discrepancies, recounts if necessary, and resolves final counts. More
sophisticated methods allow companies to automate the input process by arming counters with bar
code scanners and using wireless technology. The Tablet PC will make it faster and easier to
perform these tasks and ensure the information is more accurate and reliable which translates into
more efficient use of time and saves the company money. Information technology has come into
play for many organizations in that they are automating paper based processes. Traditionally paper
based processes are quite prone to error and misplacing of paper, misfiling or someone gaining
access to it that should not have. For example, a lot of times the wrong prescription is given because
the pharmacy cannot read the doctor's handwriting. The healthcare industry can reduce these errors
by storing and accessing patient records on a Tablet PC. An example of this would be when a doctor
goes to check on his patient, he can use the Tablet PC to pull out a patient's medical record and note
any abnormality directly into the system instead of scribbling it on a piece of paper. By reducing
errors associated with paper processes, a hospital or doctor can avoid potential malpractice lawsuits,
and not to mention better diagnose and treat

competitive environment in which a product or company operates. In this case it will explore the
competitive environment of Dell and the Tab Streak. The Five Forces Analysis looks at five key
areas: | New Entrants | | Suppliers | Industry competitors and extent of rivalry | Buyers | | Substitutes
| | Threat of New Entrants The computer industry is a highly competitive one with continuing

Power of Buyers/Customers These days the bargaining power of the customers is increasing more
and more. The computer industry has many competitors and customers can retrieve information
about them and about products more easily because of the internet. Not only can they sometimes
buy the products cheaper online, there are also major possibilities to compare products and get
customer reviews. Besides this the number of customers is huge and they are price sensitive because
of the economic crisis past years. On top of that all they have low switching costs, because most
stores offer various brands and therefore customers can easily choose another brand. However the
customers do not have all the bargaining power since prices are usually set. . Competitive Rivalry
When Dell entered the market; it found an intensely competitive market. This causes players to be
highly aggressive, which resulted in Dell forming its unique direct selling model. However Dell's
direct selling model in not as effective anymore because of new rivalries; low cost Asian
competitors, such as Lenovo and Acer. These competitors have lower producing cost and are
therefore very attractive for the price sensitive customers. Therefor Dell is already changing its
model and is selling its products also at retail points. All to reach the customer in every way

adapted the digitalization of magazines into creating applications for arguably, devices that no

During the past decade, a typical publishing model would've included a print edition along with a
website supported by social media, however due to the ever–growing mobile phones and tablet
business, publishers needed to adapt to the change in demand by adding more apps and digital
editions with its print versions. Hogarth (2014) suggests that due to the rise of digital magazines, it
is likely that by 2016, a high percentage of publications will be in digital or online formats only.
Business users are particularly intrigued with the prospect of having mobile serve as another
revenue–generating channel. A survey undertaken by Opinion Matters, sponsored by OutSystems,
shows that more than 200 UK and US respondents were asked about the primary goal of their new
mobile app initiatives, and 64% said their main aim was to generate revenue.

light table is the flagship product of Innospark and it should be offered in new markets because it is
already successful in Lithuania. In order to succeed, they should continue to innovate on their

In our opinion, Innospark should develop the light table technology on other devices such as tablets.
Actually, it could be a great opportunity to increase its target market and sell its products not only to
schools or companies but also to families. Moreover, by using the tablet system, children could

Students that are experiencing frustration in reading cannot be expected by the teacher to enjoy and
practice reading as much as a student who enjoys reading. Students that have significant reading
difficulties in the lower grades continue to struggle as they proceed through the upper grades.
Reading disorders affect a student's ability to read and to learn in the different subjects. For
example, good readers tend to be more successful in subject areas such as science and math. It is
imperative for students to learn the reading skills they need to be successful in school and in life
(Melekoglu, 2011). There are two occurring types of reading disorders. The causes, as well as the
treatments of these reading disorders, are diverse. Dyslexia is when a student has difficulty decoding
words and understanding the relationship between spelling patterns and the pronunciation of words
(Snowling & Hulme, 2012). Students with dyslexia read slowly and with error. Also, dyslexia can
affect a student's spelling and writing ability. Deficits in phonological coding and impairments in
verbal short–term memory are also seen with dyslexia. This decoding is the basis of learning to read.
The other major impairment is in reading comprehension. Students with an impairment in reading
comprehension often can read fluently without difficulty, however are unable to understand what
they have read. Reading comprehension involves accessing meanings of words and higher order

Taking a Look at the Ipad Mini
Tablet Computer – IPAD MINI Tablet PC is another mobile PC for mobile users. The tablet form
factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer but larger than a smart phone. It is highly
compact and easy to carry. Tablet PC mainly uses the screen for both input and output. Additional
features may include speakers, microphones and cameras. It is a wireless personal computer in the
form of a notebook and that allows a user to hand–write notes with a stylus or digital pen on a touch
screen. Most tablets are slightly smaller and weigh less than the average laptop. While some tablets
include fold out keyboards, others, such as the Apple I Pad, only offer touch screen input. Many
tablets now support multi touch input, which allows you to perform gestures with multiple fingers,
such as pinching an image to zoom out, or spreading your fingers apart to zoom in. Tablets without
physical keyboards allow you to enter text using a pop–up keyboard that appears on the screen.
Since tablets do not use a traditional keyboard and mouse as their primary forms of input, the user
interface of a tablet is different than a typical laptop. For example, instead of double–clicking to
open a program, most applications open with a single tap. Instead of clicking on a scroll bar to scroll
through a window, most tablet applications allow you to swipe up and down anywhere within a
window to scroll through the content. Since tablet PCs provide a different interface than traditional
computers, they

The External Competitive Environment at Lenova
Introduction
The proper planning and execution of strategy is crucial for any company to develop, especially
when the industry is extremely competitive or volatile. Industry evolution brings change in sources
and nature of competition (Porter 1979). This essay will analyse the external competitive
environment and critically evaluate the strategies employed by Lenovo, a Chinese technological
corporation, in dealing with the overall declining trend of the PC (personal computer) market.
Case study overview
Recent years saw the worldwide PC market growth rate undergoing a drastic plummet (Arthur
2013). The latest statistics from market research firm Gartner, showed an 8.6 percent decline in PC
sales in the third quarter of 2013, with shipments dipping for sixth consecutive quarters (Hachman
2013). This trend underscored challenges confronting PC manufacturers as customers favour mobile
devices such as tablet computers and smartphones.
After suffering a US$226 million loss in 2008, Lenovo attempted to improve its profitability
through innovation and efficiency by initiating the Protect and Attack strategy in 2009, which aimed
to guard its core PC business and strived to compete in emerging markets with high levels of growth
(Lenovo 2010). In response to the recent decline in PC sales, Lenovo placed emphasis in executing
the Protect and Attack strategy by evolving and innovating its product portfolio, conducting strategic
acquisitions and implementing novel marketing schemes.

Are Apple's So Popular

Why are Apple Products so Popular?
In today 's world, Apple 's products are highly sought after because they are very popular for
everyone. According to Yarow, editor of The Business Insider, said that the newest iPhone sold 5
million over the opening weekend (Yarow, 2012). However, it is difficult to find the reason why
Apple's products are so superior compared with other electronic products in the market. Since
Apple's products come out in our life, it has facilitated our life and brought us huge benefits. For
instance, people do not need to bring their heavy laptops to go to work every day, because they
already have the portable tablet PC – iPad. The ascent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
DigiTimes (2010) demonstrates that the first generation of iPad price was $499, at that time some
tablet PC manufacturers predicted iPad's price is about $1000 and these tablet PC manufacturers
originally planned their tablet prices 20%–30% lower than the iPad. The present the iPad price is
only $499, which compels the tablet PC manufacturer to re–evaluate the price strategy. If tablet PC
manufacturers want their product appealing to consumers, they could only adjust the price lower
than the iPad. But the final result shows that it is failed, and now iPad is the fourth generation, but it
still people's first choice for PC tablets. If the iPhone and iPad's price were more expensive, maybe
they would not be so popular; I believe Apple Company is also aware of this
In short, my conclusion is that the cause of Apple's products being popular depends on its creative
design, unique innovation and the reasonable price. If there were no Apple's products, I believed the
development of electronic products would slow down at least ten years. Because the market has
Apple's products, our life is more convenient than before. The emergence of Apple's products makes
electronic product market have more competition. No matter what, the direct beneficiaries of the
price war is the consumer. The constantly price war will make commodity prices approached the
cost. Consumers can buy more high–quality

Information Technology Department 's Plan Essay
Given that "a major goal of the [HISD] Information Technology Department's plan is to ensure that
technology strategies and operations support the overall learning process" (HISD, 2012), the
hardware and software to be installed and implemented in the district's standardized computer lab
will serve as a reflection of this goal. The standardized computer lab will support multiple
computing clients, including thin client Chromebooks, a tablet computer cart, and a student
workstation with desktop computers. In their 2016 Standards for Students, the International Society
for Technology in Education outlines six domains in which students should demonstrate proficiency
so that they can "be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape" (ISTE,
2016). Included in these domains is that of the Creative Communicator, in which students "choose
the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or
communication" (ISTE, 2016). To provide students opportunities to practice creating and
collaborating across platforms and throughout the elementary, middle, high school and adult stages
of learning, multiple categories of computing devices will be selected for installation in the HISD
standardized computer lab: thin clients in the form of Chromebooks, tablet computers, and desktop
computers.

So Lenovo decides to expand internationally his brand.
In 2003, Legend announced the birth of their new logo "Lenovo" to prepare its expansion into the
international market. Lenovo initiates IGRS Working Group, in cooperation with some large
companies and the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry, in order to promote the creation of
industry standards. The company would continue to serve the IT market in China, while considering
how to expand abroad. The company would seek to strengthen further Lenovo 's brand image with a
series of new product introductions. Lenovo would invest in R&D. International expansion would
entail developing international distribution channels and incurring substantial marketing and sales
costs. Lenovo 's global expansion began with a move into Hong Kong, with plans to enter the U.S.
and Europe after that. One approach would be to acquire foreign companies with distribution
capabilities while another would be to rely on wholesalers and retailers for distribution, and the
company would need to compare the costs and benefits of alternative distribution channels.
Meanwhile IBM was having losses for 3 years and a half. So Lenovo stood to gain scale from the
acquisition because it might benefit from economies of scale in manufacturing. In

Introduction
Lenovo became well–known only in 2004. Previously, the company has a long history since 1984
naming 'Legend Holdings' incorporating in Hong Kong, and finally become the largest PC company
in China serving more than 160 customers around the world (Lenovo, 2015). Lenovo came from the
combination between 'legend' (company's old name), and 'novo' in Latin means 'new' (The New
Yorks Time, 2008). The company has differentiated its brand name from other Chinese companies
such as Huawei, ZTE in telecommunication, and Haier in appliances. It is considered the first step
of Lenovo entering in global market since the brand name is recognizable. This report will mainly
focus on Lenovo strategies that effectively bring the company to become competitive in global

This strategy is created in 2009 by Yang, the CEO. He mentioned that it is very important for the
company to initially have a strong foundation in the Chinese personal computer (PC) market before
competing in the global market (Strategy Business, 2014). The size of local market is one of the
main factors driving Lenovo to grow not only domestically but globally (CSIS, 2013). For example,
Lenovo uses Baidu program and Lenovo application in place of Google application in order to build
a strong Chinese base since there is 64.9 percent of Chinese in mainland China who seldom use

its help. And as we seem to be the future, learning and guiding with iPhones and iPads can only help
to achieve more. First of all, like iPads in a classroom. This will not only make class more fun and

The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom...
The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom Instruction
Most schools, both local and international, are now venturing into using mobile computing devices
for classroom instruction. Thus, La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) pioneered the use of tablets in the
classrooms at the later part of 2012 and named this endeavor as the PERsonal Learning device
(PEARL) program. During its initial stage, students of the honors classes were selected as its
participants. On the following year around eight to nine sections in the High School level opted to
join the said program. However, during the course of the said program implementation, certain
issues have been raised that needed to be addressed by the school especially in the area of student
learning. Based on a study made by a group of LSGH High School teachers last February 2014 on
the effectiveness of using tablets in Grade 10 English classes, it has been observed that there is no
distinct difference between the non–tablet and tablet classes in terms of student performance. This
may be attributed to the following: 1). there is no definite strategic plan made except for the
roadmap on how the PEARL program will be implemented. 2). the infrastructure set–up was not
carefully taken into consideration. 3). teachers have not been given enough training prior to its
implementation. 4). the policies and guidelines drafted on the students' use of tablets were vague or
lacking in terms of giving sanctions to erring students.

One of the largest technology company in the world, Lenovo had a humble beginning as a small

Technology Is A Key Component
Introduction
As technology becomes more and more prevalent in classrooms everywhere, questions arise
regarding the benefits and drawbacks on introducing technology to students at a young age.
Technology is a key component in many of today's educational settings; however, there are concerns
as to whether technology is being used as an aid and resource or as a crutch and whether or not
technology is replacing teachers. Despite these concerns, according to Barron, Harms, and
Kalaydjian (2003) the use of technology is increasing in classrooms across America. Teachers are
using technology to perform low–level tasks, but not high level tasks. This could possibly be
because many teachers are not comfortable with the skills required to integrate ... Show more

They reviewed the work of Sarij–Blatchford, who has identified communication and collaboration,
metacognition and creative learning that can be engaged with technology in the classroom.
However, he still expresses the importance of adult and peer support and having the appropriate
resources for use. Stephen and Plowman (2008) themselves even question the conditions necessary
for young children to have a productive and positive encounter with technology. Traditionally
children's use of technology, such as computers, was during free playtime, which was often
unproductive, so this study focused on guiding children's interaction with information and
communication technology in the classroom setting.
Mitchell and Dunbar (2006) conducted an analysis of computers used in the nursery setting and the
benefits and concerns that may occur. They reviewed the works of Corders and Miller who argue
that the introduction of the computer to nursery school is inappropriate. They suggested that it
pushed children into becoming skilled little technicians. They view freedom to play, imagine, and
enjoy the experience of the world is more essential. The preschool Curricular Guidance argued that
children should have opportunities to used a range of ICT resources which will enhance and extend
learning as well as give them opportunities to engage in self––directed learning.

The Delivery Of Health Related Services
Literature Review In our current healthcare system, the delivery of health related services involves
the "movement" of patients from one care setting to another. Also recognized as transitions of care
these actions often occur between acute–care hospitals and post–acute care settings such as
rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. Transitions of care, however, do not only occur between
in–patient settings. Patients discharged from the hospital to their home or shuffled between a
primary care clinic and specialty clinic also experience transitions of care. In any instance,
transitions of care place patients at increased risk for errors due to ineffective communication
between doctors, nurses, patients, and other service providers. ... Show more content on

Marcotte, Kirtane, Lynn, and Mckethan explored how health information technology (HIT)
integration could allow for more seamless transitions of care (2015). Based on data acquired from
the Beacon Communities and the National Quality Forum Safe Practices Report they identified four
areas in which HIT could be used to improve transitions between the acute–care hospital and post–
acute setting. The areas identified were the discharge process, information flow and feedback,
medication and adherence, and patient and caregiver engagement (Marcotte, et al., 2014). While
some HIT innovations have been successfully implemented they found that the incorporation of HIT
in transitions of care was still significantly underdeveloped (Marcotte et al., 2015). This was greatly
attributed to the sluggish adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) as well as a lack of EHR
interoperability to allow for nationwide information exchange (Marcotte et. al., 2015). Despite these

How Are Small Form Factor PCs Used in a Medical Setting?

form factor PC resembles a tablet or all–in–one computer and offers a number of advantages such as
self–sufficiency and Wi–Fi connectivity that makes it the perfect candidate for use in this type of
environment.

Another major consideration is choosing to employ small form factor PCs is the ability to update
information using more than one method. While all of the tablets and all–in–one units offered by
Cybernet are Wi–Fi enabled, they can also be connected directly to a docking station for charging
and to use with a standard keyboard as

  • 1. Computers And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay Computers In between 1943 and 1946, ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at University of Pennsylvania, U.S. ENIAC was a modular computer, collected of separate panels to perform different functions. Twenty of these parts were accumulators, which could not only add and subtract but hold a ten–digit decimal number in memory. Numbers were passed between these units across several general–purpose buses. In order to achieve its high speed, the panels had to send and receive numbers, save the answer and produce the next operation, all without any moving parts. Key to its usefulness was the ability to branch; it could produce different operations, depending on the sign of a computed result. ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7200 crystal diodes, 1500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and about 5,000,000 hand–soldered joints. It weighed more than 30 tons, was roughly 2.4m × 0.9m × 30m in size, and consumed 150 kW of electricity. This power requirement led to the rumour that whenever the computer was switched on, lights in Philadelphia dimmed. UNIVAC I MAINFRAME COMPUTER UNIVAC I mainframe computer of 1951, which became known for predicting the outcome of the U.S. presidential election the following year. This incident is particularly important because the computer predicted an Eisenhower landslide when traditional pollsters all called it for Adlai Stevenson. The External Competitive Environment at Lenova Introduction The proper planning and execution of strategy is crucial for any company to develop, especially when the industry is extremely competitive or volatile. Industry evolution brings change in sources and nature of competition (Porter 1979). This essay will analyse the external competitive environment and critically evaluate the strategies employed by Lenovo, a Chinese technological corporation, in dealing with the overall declining trend of the PC (personal computer) market. Case study overview Recent years saw the worldwide PC market growth rate undergoing a drastic plummet (Arthur 2013). The latest statistics from market research firm Gartner, showed an 8.6 percent decline in PC sales in the third quarter of 2013, with shipments dipping for sixth consecutive quarters (Hachman 2013). This trend underscored challenges confronting PC manufacturers as customers favour mobile devices such as tablet computers and smartphones. After suffering a US$226 million loss in 2008, Lenovo attempted to improve its profitability through innovation and efficiency by initiating the Protect and Attack strategy in 2009, which aimed to guard its core PC business and strived to compete in emerging markets with high levels of growth (Lenovo 2010). In response to the recent decline in PC sales, Lenovo placed emphasis in executing the Protect and Attack strategy by evolving and innovating its product portfolio, conducting strategic acquisitions and implementing novel marketing schemes. ... However, it is difficult to find the reason why Apple's products are so superior compared with other electronic products in the market. The present the iPad price is only $499, which compels the tablet PC manufacturer to re–evaluate the price strategy. Information Technology Department 's Plan Essay Given that "a major goal of the [HISD] Information Technology Department's plan is to ensure that technology strategies and operations support the overall learning process" (HISD, 2012), the hardware and software to be installed and implemented in the district's standardized computer lab will serve as a reflection of this goal. The standardized computer lab will support multiple computing clients, including thin client Chromebooks, a tablet computer cart, and a student workstation with desktop computers. In their 2016 Standards for Students, the International Society for Technology in Education outlines six domains in which students should demonstrate proficiency so that they can "be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape" (ISTE, 2016). Included in these domains is that of the Creative Communicator, in which students "choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication" (ISTE, 2016). To provide students opportunities to practice creating and collaborating across platforms and throughout the elementary, middle, high school and adult stages of learning, multiple categories of computing devices will be selected for installation in the HISD standardized computer lab: thin clients in the form of Chromebooks, tablet computers, and desktop computers. The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom Instruction Most schools, both local and international, are now venturing into using mobile computing devices for classroom instruction. Thus, La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) pioneered the use of tablets in the classrooms at the later part of 2012 and named this endeavor as the PERsonal Learning device (PEARL) program. During its initial stage, students of the honors classes were selected as its participants. On the following year around eight to nine sections in the High School level opted to join the said program. However, during the course of the said program implementation, certain issues have been raised that needed to be addressed by the school especially in the area of student learning. Based on a study made by a group of LSGH High School teachers last February 2014 on the effectiveness of using tablets in Grade 10 English classes, it has been observed that there is no distinct difference between the non–tablet and tablet classes in terms of student performance. This may be attributed to the following: 1). there is no definite strategic plan made except for the roadmap on how the PEARL program will be implemented. 2). the infrastructure set–up was not carefully taken into consideration. 3). teachers have not been given enough training prior to its implementation. 4). the policies and guidelines drafted on the students' use of tablets were vague or lacking in terms of giving sanctions to erring students. ... The Delivery Of Health Related Services Literature Review In our current healthcare system, the delivery of health related services involves the "movement" of patients from one care setting to another. Also recognized as transitions of care these actions often occur between acute–care hospitals and post–acute care settings such as rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. Transitions of care, however, do not only occur between in–patient settings. Patients discharged from the hospital to their home or shuffled between a primary care clinic and specialty clinic also experience transitions of care. In any instance, transitions of care place patients at increased risk for errors due to ineffective communication between doctors, nurses, patients, and other service providers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marcotte, Kirtane, Lynn, and Mckethan explored how health information technology (HIT) integration could allow for more seamless transitions of care (2015). Based on data acquired from the Beacon Communities and the National Quality Forum Safe Practices Report they identified four areas in which HIT could be used to improve transitions between the acute–care hospital and post– acute setting. The areas identified were the discharge process, information flow and feedback, medication and adherence, and patient and caregiver engagement (Marcotte, et al., 2014). While some HIT innovations have been successfully implemented they found that the incorporation of HIT in transitions of care was still significantly underdeveloped (Marcotte et al., 2015). This was greatly attributed to the sluggish adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) as well as a lack of EHR interoperability to allow for nationwide information exchange (Marcotte et. al., 2015). Despite these barriers, there have been some practical HIT developments such as electronic risk stratification tools and clinical decision support tools. These instruments identify patients at increased risk for post– acute complications by scoring clinical prognosis, functional status, social, and economic factors.
