The document discusses three different styles of music videos:
1) Narrative videos tell a story, like Bruno Mars' "Catch a Grenade" which depicts a man expressing his love.
2) Performance videos focus on the performance of the song without much plot, like Sia's "Chandelier" which connects visually to the song's theme.
3) Conceptual videos are based on an unusual or surreal idea, like Katy Perry's "Firework" which uses firework metaphors that can be interpreted differently.
2. Narrative:
Bruno Mars – Catch a granade
A narrative video is a story with meaning and has
purpose. In this Bruno Mars video the story is about a
young man in love expressing his feelings towards a girl
about how he would ‘catch a grenade’.
narrative is the media term for story telling, it is the way in which
different elements combine to tell a story. in this video the story begins
with the bullies victim however the narrative later leads onto the bully
and then the bullies family where a new story is told and elaborated for
each character.
I like music videos with a narrative behind them as it gives
the audience something to relate to in a sense and therefore
the target audience if easier to connect with.
3. Performance:
Sia – Chandelier
Performance based videos are videos with little meaning and
have no purpose. They are mainly used for up beat pop songs.
Many music videos use performance based for a song including
dance.
"Chandelier" has a sad theme talking about "the glitter and
fatigue of a party girl's life“ and a performance is perfect to fully
connect with the audience as the whole performance can link
with the lyrics.
I feel like performance based videos may be harder to film and
edit as there must include a variety of angles of each shot.
4. Conceptual:
Concept videos are based around a single idea or
concept and are usually unusual or obscure, even
surreal for an audience. The unusual content is an
attraction to many consumers, which draws them
in. A successful concept video will keep the
audience entertained and constantly looking at
what or who is on the screen
Katy Perry - Firework
In Katy Perry’s song ‘firework’ the metaphor
in the lyrics ‘You’re a firework’ can be
interpreted in many different ways by the
audience as shown in the music video
I think that conceptual music videos are a very
good way to attract different target audiences as
people can interpret the metaphor however they
want and therefore it can link to them
