Lana Del Rey - Video Games
1.
2. I cannot apply any narrative theory, as this is
a performance/concept based music video.
There is a hidden meaning behind the lyrics,
about how she is trying to make a
relationship work but nothing works. She is
using many different clips that she found and
put together, to show what the relationship is
like. “For two”-shows these two empty chairs
and how she is finally giving up on the
relationship if he will not try anymore.
3. Low key lighting-Barth’s enigma
code, creates mystery.
Special effects-made to look vintage
Close ups of artists
Theme-relationships
Fast and slow jump cuts- in line
with the speed of the music
Different settings, park, city and her
room. She gathered different clips
from YouTube- low budget music
video.
4. “Watching me”- here we see
photographers and someone
who is meant to be Lana.
“Watching all our friends fall”-
here we see a kid on a
skateboard, which he then falls
off.
Many of the clips are black and
white, creating suspense and
mystery. It also makes it feel
more old fashioned.
5. The visuals stay in tune with the music. As
the music gets faster, the visuals turn darker,
because she is finally realising that she
deserves better than that. During this
relationship, she felt many different
emotions, which explains all the different
clips.
6. Many close ups of the artist are used. This
could be used to reinforce her brand identity,
as she is selling her music. It could also
signify. With the close ups we get to see more
clearly how she is feeling, with her facial
expression and the way she hardly moves.
Move over her name features in the song,
which promotes herself and her music.
7. The lyric “watch me” could link to
Berger’s theory about how men look
and women appear. She is being
objectified, as she is merely used as
an object for men to look at.
A cartoon is also used to highlight a
females body. This suggests that she
is being sexualised, and only used in
this music video for this reason. This
challenges the typical conventions of
indie pop music videos because, they
do not use women as mere objects.
The artist uses direct mode of
address, as when the camera cuts
straight back to her she looks up at
the audience directly.
8. The song she is singing about is about video game,
called World of war craft. She used this because it
was the video game her ex boyfriend used to play-
links to the relationship she is singing about. The
reference to the video game could also suggest, that
he plays with he like he plays his video game- he
doesn’t really care that much.
Lana also used various clips that she found on
YouTube, such as this cartoon clip. Not many indie
pop music videos use intertextual references as they
just deliver their music, with these intertextual
references it could expand the audience and help
piece the meaning of the song together.
9. I think that this music video is concept based,
as there is a hidden meaning behind it. Lana
is using her emotions to get her
message(song) out to her audience. She is in
love but the person she love doesn’t love or
show her any affection back.
It would also be argued to be a performance
based music video, because Lana used a
webcam to film herself singing. This makes
the music video more personal, as she is
creating it herself for her fans.
