2. Penny Lane – The Beatles
As the line says ‘a barber showing photographs’ it shows the typical symbol for a barber shop so it agrees
with Goodwin's theory that lyrics directly match the images in the video. This is also evident when the bus
keeps going past with Penny Lane written on the front of it.
It has constant close up shots of the artists o show that they are actually performing in this video which will
have been done by their record labour to increase the value of the music video.
This video is a mix of performance and concept. There are parts of the music video where the camera pans
across the faces of the band where they are all vaguely lip syncing the song but this is only a small section of
the music video. The rest is conceptual as it shows shot of the band going round Penny Lane.
The video also fits the genre stereotypes for music video as despite throughout most of the video the shots
represent the song, at the end they are all sat having lunch ina field while still singing about the ‘blue
suburban skies’, this is common in psychedelic rock videos as they do something odd and different to what is
expected.
3. Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys
The music video for this song goes against a lot of Goodwins theories as it doesnt include any performance by
the artists, they are never performing to the camera.
The music video does have aspects of a narrative however it isn’t particularly clear so it would be seen more
as it being more conceptual.
The music video doesn’t have any specific shots that completely represent the lyrics of the song however the
music video does show what the songs about as they are just having fun in the summer and that’s what they
mean by ‘Good Vibration’.
There also isn’t any evidence of the male gaze as the only time we have a shot of a women is right at the
start playing with a basketball and is fully clothed so cant really be classed as the male gaze.
They do have close ups on all of the artists faces which would have been because the record label wanted
them to push the appeal of the video. The camera goes across all of their faces showing us that the actual
artists are in the video as the rest of music video you cant really distinguish them as they are running around
with fireman helmets on.
