2. Relationship between lyrics and video
His theory was that there are three categories that we can have when looking at
the link between the video and the lyrics, these are:
Illustrated - this is when the video is made so that the lyrics are almost explained in a simple way through
the visuals of the music video.
Amplified – this is when the director of the music video is trying to make the lyrics louder through
visuals/the music video.
Contradictive - in these music videos the video basically nothing to do with the lyrics and example of this
is Paolo Nutini - Pencil fulla’ lead.
3. Relationship between lyrics and video
The editing, camera shots and the cuts of the music video are in time with
the lyrics. This includes having certain cuts or effects that’ll be in time with
certain beats or lyrics throughout the video, emphasising the relationship
between lyrics and the visuals. This is shown in the music video ‘50 Grand’
by Devlin feat Skepta.
An example of this from ‘50 Grand’ is when Devlin is rapping a verse and
then it switches from leading him to following a chase. The chase comes
across the screen to give the look of it being all one shot.
4. Genre characteristics
This is when music videos will show very similar characteristics due to the same
due to them being part of the same genre. On the left is the music video of
Shutdown by Skepta and the right is Shut up by Stormzy. Both of these are by UK
grime artists. Both these stills show the similarity between the style of music video.

5. Genre characteristics
The features that are expected in a music video are often dependant on
what genre of music that this particular song is. Examples of this could
include that a girl/boy pop band may have a dance routine included in there
music video, whereas a rock band may have an ‘live’ performance in there
video. In a music video for a rap video there will most likely be a lot of
expensive jewellery, women and expensive cars around the scene.
6. Artists close ups
Goodwin expressed that a key feature of a music video is several close ups of the
artist. This is due to the record companies recommending that the artist should be
strongly featured throughout the music video.
Here is an
example: Ed
Sheeran in the
music video Small
bump.
