LESSON 4 – DAY 1
What was our lesson last week?
- DECAYING MATERIALS – are wastes that may
cause harm to one’s health.
What do you mean by waste?
- WASTE – is any materials that is no longer
usable and is thrown away.
DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING
PICTURES
Can you identify the different
materials that undergo decay?
What are the characteristics of these
materials?
Do you think these materials can make
you sick?
What possible diseases can we get if
we are exposed to these materials?
What do you understand by the word
diseases/sickness?
Our activity today will help you describe
the kind of diseases/sickness that
decaying materials can bring us
DISEASES
•An illness that affects a person,
animal or plant.
•A condition that prevents the body or
mind from working normally.
What are the standards in doing
group activity?
WHAT TO DO:
•Visit the gallery.
• Examine the five pictures displayed in the gallery.
• Describe what you see in each picture.
• Gather information and record your observation.
• As soon as you are done observing, go back to your
group and discuss your findings with them.
• Organize your findings in the data chart below.

family lives

Asthma. Pneumonia,

Mosquito malaria
ANSWER THESE:
•What are the waste materials seen in the
surroundings?
•How are the waste materials disposed?
•What are the pests dwelling in the place?
•Why do you think those pests like to
breed in dirty place?
•What illness could the people living
near the dumpsite and squatter’s area
acquire?
•What could be the possible causes of
the illness acquired by the family
living there?
•What did you learn in this activity?
IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING PICTURES
DAY - 2
•How did you find our activity yesterday?
•What kind of waste materials are found in
the dumpsites, canals or esteros?
•Describe the surroundings in every picture.
•Are there pests in the area?
What are the common pests
seen in the area?
•What can you say about the
family living in those areas?
•What can you say
about the old man?
Describe him.
•What about the
boy? What kind of
illness does the boy
have?
•What did you learn from this activity?
Decaying materials are
wastes that may cause
harm to one’s health.
Waste is any material
that is no longer usable
and is thrown away.
•There are common ailments that may result from
being exposed to decaying materials.
•Some of these are allergy, cholera, malaria,
typhoid, dysentery, and some skin disease such as
ring worm and scabies.
•Malaria and dengue
are diseases spread by
specific type of
mosquitoes. These
become epidemic in
places where these
type of mosquito breed.
•TYPHOID – is a waterborne
disease. People who drink
polluted water can become
infected with typhoid. The
garbage in this area is a good
breeding place for flies. The flies
can carry the disease and infect
more people.
•DYSENTERY – is a disease that
can cause severe diarrhea. If
not treated properly someone
can die from it.
•This is a waterborne disease
that is transmitted to a person
when they drink polluted water.
•Proper disposal of waste should be
observed in areas near dumpsites,
esteros or canals to prevent them
from too much exposure to garbage
that will result in danger.
•Good hygiene
practices such as
washing of hands,
boiling of water,
avoidance (if
possible) or
exposure to air.
• How could people living in areas near
dumpsites, esteros or canals be protected
from getting sick?
• Proper disposal of waste should be observed
to prevent them from too much exposure to
garbage that will result to damage.
• Good hygiene practices such as washing of
hands, boiling of water, avoidance (if possible)
or exposure to air.
EVALUATION
ANSWER IN A PIECE OF PAPER
1.If you are exposed to decaying materials,
what could be its result to your health?
2.Explain why decaying materials affect one’s
health and safety.
ASSIGNMENT
Look for a place in your community where
people practice proper waste disposal (example:
place where there is a Material Recovery Facility
MRF).
Interview that and prepare a report on what
you have visited.
THANK YOU!
