7. In this lesson, you will learn the negative impacts of poor
environmental sanitation on the health of an individual.
Sanitation is the hygienic means of promoting health through
prevention of human contact with the hazards of wastes as well as
treatment and proper disposal of garbage, sewage or waste water.
On the other hand, poor environmental sanitation can be one of
the major causes of poor health and the development of
communicable diseases among people. It is manifested through poor
solid waste disposal causing soil contamination, water pollution, and
air pollution.
8. The following are the common diseases and disorders caused by poor
sanitation.
1.Diarrhea
This is caused by a variety of micro-organisms including viruses, bacteria,
and protozoans. It causes a person to lose both water and electrolytes which
leads to dehydration and in some cases , to death.
It is the most important public health problem directly related to water
and sanitation. The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can cut
diarrheal disease by one-third. Next to providing adequate sanitation
facilities is the key to prevent waterborne diseases.
9. 2.Cholera
It is an acute bacterial infection of the intestinal tract. It causes severe
attacks of diarrhea that, without treatment can quickly lead to dehydration
and death. It is a world-wide problem especially in emergency situations. It
can be prevented by access to safe drinking water, sanitation and good
hygiene behavior.
3.Intestinal Worms
People become infected with intestinal parasitic worms through contact
with soil that has been contaminated with human wastes from an infected
person, or by eating contaminated food.
Intestinal worms may lead to malnutrition, anemia or retarded growth.
Children particularly susceptible and typically have the largest number of
worms.
10. 4.Insect-carrying disease (Vector-Borne Disease
Mosquitoes and rats are known to live and breed in sewage areas and
both are known to carry life-threatening diseases.
Mosquitoes breed in cans, tires and containers that collect water. They
carry diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya. Malaria is
associated with the Anopheles mosquito while dengue and chikungunya are
associated with the Aedes mosquito.
Rats find food and shelter in landfill and sewage which results to diseases
such as leptospirosis and salmonellosis.
11. 5.Dysentery
Is a combination of nausea, abdominal cramps coupled with severe
diarrhea. In cases of acute dysentery, one may also experience a high fever
and traces of blood in the fecal matter.
There are two type of dysentery
1. Bacillary dysentery which is caused by bacteria.
2. Amoebic dysentery which is caused by amoebae.
When either of these is ingested through contaminated food or water, one
will develop dysentery within a gestation of four days.
12. 6.Typhoid fever
This infection is caused by Salmonella Typhi bacteria. This disease is
contracted by consuming contaminated food or water. The bacteria pass
through the intestinal tract and can be identified in stool samples. Its
symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite and headache.
7.Lead poisoning
Is caused due to consumption of water contaminated with lead often
coming from old pipes as well as surface water pollution.
This disease is particularly harmful to children and can cause a number of
health problems including organ damage, nervous system disorders ,
anemia, high blood pressure, kidney disease and problems in the
reproductive system.
