Bursitis
Chapter #5
What is
BURSA ??????
The bursas are the
fluid filled sacs …..
FUNCTION
These are the
cushion points
where muscles and
tendons slide over
the bone .
Classification of bursa:
Type 1
• Adventitious bursa:
• These are present in soft tissue.
Type 2
• Subcutaneous bursa:
• They are present at the junction of subcutaneous
tissue and deep fascia.
Type 3
• Synovial bursa:
• They are present in the large joints of arms and legs.
BURSITIS
The inflammation of the bursa is
known as BURSITIS
Examples
• At knee joint (housemaid’s knee)
• Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle
(soldier’s heel)
• At elbow (tennis elbow)
• The bottom of pelvis (weaver’s bottom)
But the most common is the
BURSITIS OF SHOULDER
Causes of Bursitis
• Bursitis may be due to:
 Infection
 Subsequent Injury
 Arthritis
 Gout
 Subsequent inflammation of surrounding
bursa
 Calcium deposition around a joint
 Minor but repetitive irritation
Symptoms
• Severe pain
• Swelling of the affected area
• Loss of mobility of the affected area
Treatment
• This condition is treated with:
Rest
Ice
Anti inflammatory medicines.
