CHAPTER 1
(The Basics of Information Systems)
Page 3
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
• Is a mechanism that helps people collect,
store, organize and use information,
• The Basic purpose of any information
system is to help its users get a certain type
of value from the information in the system,
regardless of the type of information that is
stored or the type of value desired.
Page 4
TYPES OF
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Page 5
OFFICE AUTOMATION SYSTEMS
• An office automation system uses computers and/or
networks to perform various operations, such as word
processing, accounting, document management, or
communication
• It is designed to manage information and – more
importantly – to help users handle certain information –
related tasks more efficiently.
• Office Automation Systems can be built from off-the-shelf
applications.
• A good example is the Microsoft Office a program that
includes a word processor, spreadsheet program, a
presentation program and a database management
system, as well as other tools.
Page 6
TRANSACTION PROCESSING
SYSTEMS
• A transaction is a complete event, which may occur as a
series of many steps, such as taking order from a
customer.
• Although you may conduct business transaction
frequently, you may have never considered the steps
that make up a typical transaction. All of these steps can
be processed through an information system.
• A system that handles the processing and tracking of
transactions is called a “Transaction Processing System”
(TPS)
Page 7
DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS
• A Decision Support System (DSS) is a special
application that collects and reports certain types of
business data, which can help managers make better
decisions.
• Decision Support Systems are useful tools, because
they give managers highly tailored, highly structured
data about specific issues .
• Many Decision Support Systems are spreadsheet or
database applications that have been customized for a
certain business.
Page 8
EXPERT SYSTEMS
• An expert system performs tasks that normally would
be done by a human, such as medical diagnoses or
loan approvals.
• After analyzing the relevant data, some expert systems
recommend a course of action, which a person then
can consider taking.
• Some expert systems are empowered to make
decisions and take actions. It requires a large
collection of human expertise in a specific area.
Page 9
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION
SYSTEMS
• MIS is a set of software tools that enables managers to
gather, organize, and evaluate information about
workgroup a department, or an entire organization.
• These system meets the needs of three different
categories of managers – executives, middle
managers, and front-line managers – by producing
different kinds of reports drawn from the
organization’s database
