We discuss often what we should be working on. Given the rapidly changing world and the boom of technology where everyone CAN we aware of EVERYTHING, a key factor to our growth also becomes “What we should not be doing”. Or better yet, what should we be doing and when?
Why? Why does this matter?
To me this matters because of 2 things a) I often find find myself wanting to learn / explore/ try new things and LinkedIn encourages this and b) No matter what I do I can never squeeze in more than 24 hrs in a days!
So gotto spend my limited quota of 24 hrs in a meaningful way!!! I want to get shit done, I want to explore a little, I want to provide opportunities for the team to grow …at the same time I want to walk the fine line between distraction and exploration well.
So let’s take the next few minute to brainstorm what’s going to be “OUR STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS”
That beg’s a question …
What is Strategy?
Countries have strategy
Companies have strategy
There are famous war fare strategies…Napolean always had a meticulously designed plan…he never followed it is a different thing
Chess can only be played with Strategy.
IMHO Strategy is nothing but Prioritization done well.
5. "I learned that we can do anything, but we
can't do everything.. at least not at the
same time.
So think of your priorities not in terms of
what activities you do, but when you do
them.
Timing is everything.”
— Dan Millman (Author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior)
7. It’s the rocks that haunt…
That overwhelming feeling …
You have signed up for too much
You are spending too much time
with sand not leaving enough time
for rocks…
11. Are you connected well?
1st degree connection
- people you spend regular time with
- Your team, Local office folks, Clients
2nd degree connections
- people you work with occasionally
- Cross functional teams , Global Teams, Project / initiative leads
3rd degree connections
- people you work with rarely but who can influence what you do
12. Take Away
1. Do Better
• PMAT – Plan/ Prioritize around your rocks
• Sequencing - Are you doing what you should
be doing, when you should be doing it?
2. Connect Better
When we were planning the NAMER summit, we discussed a few agenda topics. Tomorrow is going to breakouts on what we should know and what we should be working on.Given the growth spurt at LinkedIn and some of the feedback you all have shared with us time and again, we also thought it would be worth while for us to talk about “What we should not be doing”.Or better yet, what should we be doing and when? Why? Why does this matter? To me this matters because of 2 things a) I often find find myself wanting to learn / explore/ try new things and LinkedIn encourages this and b) No matter what I do I can never squeeze in more than 24 hrs in a days!So gotto spend my limited quota of 24 hrs in a meaningful way!!! Interestingly the word strategy is synonymous with tactics! Although we often use them as opposites…Last week I researched a few quotes and definitions on strategy and would like to share 1 that resonates with me…Click
In many ways Strategy for success boils down to prioritization and timing or sequencing.I guess then the question is are we timing our day well ?Let’s see…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38U_rLLW-qM7:43 minAny brave volunteers who are ready to publicly accept that they work late hours trying to finish that 1 very urgent thing that cannot wait till tomorrow? Then there are some of us who just can’t sleep at timesLinkedIn is growing …and we are good at hiring …and that means we all are potentially good hires. Why then are we overwhelmed at times even though we are putting in our best?
Next: Exercise for everyone on where they are spending time…
Committed and doing2. Committed to but not doingAre youOvercommitted? Reprioritize with stake holdersOr are you spending time on sand? For me: APAC Partnerships 3. Doing but don’t need to?These are our distractors…Let some go and we can find time to do the things we are supposed to be doing. For our rocks. For me: Emails of the nature of FYI (not from my team, or my leaders or my peers ….just FYI at LinkedIn. I read them at the end f the day if I can get t it. 10 min
Now use the list …clean it up. Shake the sand away and let’s create our PMAT.When defining our OKRs a few things worth remembering our:RESULTS MATTER - Business needs to run as usual. In addition to results to be seen as a leader think about – - What improvements are you making to the usual? - What have you done lately that impacts business in a meaningful way?10 min
And finally to accomplish these OKRS without getting overwhelmed …we need to have strong ties with stake holders.
2nd degree:Monthly/ quarterly meeting set up3rd degree: Reach out and let them know you exist. Catch them in events like these. Setup topical meetings if it makes sense.
