This student magazine uses design elements that would appeal to its target audience of teens and young adults. On the front cover, cover lines use hyperbolic language about exclusives and hot topics. Images and offers also signal a focus on fashion, makeup, and music festivals. The contents page introduces sections like "Favorites" and "Competitions" while advertising articles about food, footwear, and more. A double page spread features an exclusive interview with a model, using her large image and a pull quote to draw readers in. Throughout, a consistent color scheme and placement of mastheads and page numbers reinforce the magazine's brand identity.
2. Front cover
• On this front cover of a students work they have used at strapline at the top of the page
stating that it is Leicester's best lifestyles magazine. By using the location that the magazine
will be focusing on in the strapline they are already informing their target audience that it is
regional magazine and so they will know whether or not he magazine would be relevant to
them. They have used the masthead ‘CITY SCOPE’ and this would imply that the magazine is
the place to go for all of the latest news that is going on in the city that the target audience
is living in and this is why the masthead would attract them. The sans-serif font that has
been used for this also looks modern and fits with the idea of a modern city. Underneath
this that have used the typical convention of having the website and the date of the issue
of the magazine because this would make the magazine more accessible to the target
audience. To the right of this they have included the price of the magazine in a white font
inside a fluorescent green puff. This would ensure that it stands out to the target audience.
Underneath this they have the chosen to have a selection of cover lines advertising what is
in the magazine. These include words such as ‘EXCLUSIVE’, ‘ULTIMATE’ and ‘HOTTEST.’ the
target audience would typically be attracted by this hyperbolic language. They have also
used imperative language in the phrase ‘MUST TRY’ that would also attract the target
audience by causing them to think that it is something special. They have used another
puff at the bottom of the page which emphasis a chance to win festival tickets. This, the
main image of a young woman wearing a lot of make up and glitter on her face (which is
not something that someone of an older demographic would do) and the offer fro 20% off
at the trendy shoe shop OFFICE all shows that the target audience for this magazine is
those in their late teens and twenties. They have used a bright green, pink, white and grey
color scheme which is bright and would also be appealing to their target audience. They
have also conventionally used a barcode in the bottom right corner of the page which
would allow the product to the easily brought.
3. Contents Page
• In the top left hand corner of this student’s contents page they have used the masthead in very small
typography with the same colouring a font as what was used on the masthead. This would be to consolidate
the brand with the reader. Just underneath this they've used a title saying ‘Contents’ in a black serif font
which stands out well against the white background. This is a typical convention as it allows the reader to
know what page they are on and ca easily find it as they are flicking through the magazine. To the right of
this they have used a small introduction by the editor, in this case the student herself, the would attract the
target audience because they are meant to feel involved as this part is directed at them. The words ‘Hello’
and the signature have been written in the more cursive and informal font as though they have been
handwritten. this is also a typical convention of the contents page of a magazine. Just above this they have
also included a small black and white image of the editor. This would also been done to involve the reader.
On this contents page they have also included two other images. One of of the model that is also featured on
the front cover. This would attract the target audience because she is presumably someone that they they
would know about that be interested in. they have also includes a small cover line and the page number of
the article relating to her, again typical convention of the magazine. The other image is of some sauces and a
menu at a restaurant that the audience could visit and the cover line is advertising the new menu. This
would represent the eating out part of the lifestyle genre that the magazine is about. In the bottom right
hand corner they have conventionally used a small box to advertise their social media platform as this would
allow the audience to gain more information about the brand and feel more involved. For the main bulk of
this page there is page numbers and accompanying cover lines for the the articles that they are advertising
from within the magazine. This has been split up into three sections, ‘FEATURES’, ‘FAVOURITES’ and
‘COMPETITIONS’ these three headlines for the sections are in a pink bold sans-serif font which would stand
out to the target audience because apart from the masthead and the editors not it is the only text which is
not in a plain black font. The rest of the text shows cover lines which cover a range of topics from ‘footwear
to ‘food’ and ‘festivals. This is because they are showing the wide range of topics that are being covered
under their lifestyle genre.
4. Double Page Spread
• On the left side on this students double page spread they have include a
whole page that is covered by the image of their featured model. It is
medium shot of her holding her hair out. her hair is curled and she is
wearing a lot of make up and this would be appealing to the target audience
because they wold also be women of the same age and so they would
presumably be interesting in maintaining a similar type of look. On this page
they have also used a quote from the article that is n the opposite mage, this
pull quote would be used to attract the audience to this article as they are
flicking through the magazine. It is very eye catching as it is written in a black
font on a light coloured background and it is also a reasonable size and the
only serif font on the page which would have been done to reflect the
personality and style of the model. Conventionally, they have also included
the price and where the top that the model is wearing was brought from. It
was brought from a high street shop which would attract the target audience
because it would make the model seem relatable. On the opposite page in
the right hand corner they are used a banner in bright pink which would be
eye-catching saying ‘exclusive’ which would attract the target audience. They
have then used the masthead ‘SPRING TRENDS With Shan.’ the first part of
this is written in all capitals and is in a serif bright green font which would
stand out against the white background and matches the colour scheme of
the other pages that have been produced as this adds to the brand identity.
The by-line for this article is in in a smaller sans-serif font which is in a pink
which also matches the house style and so would be appealing. The main
bulk of the article is in the form of an interview and with an alternating black
and pink colour scheme for the text which changes depending on who is
speaking. This makes it easy for the target audience to find what they are
looking fro without confusion. They have also used typical conventions of
having the date of the issue, a smaller version of the masthead and the page
numbers on the bottom corners of each page.
