Agendas Today
 Derived from Latin word ‘computare’ which means to
calculate
 Electronic device.
 Makes our work easier, faster and convenient
Definition: Computer is an electronic device
that accepts data from user, process it to
give meaningful information and save it
for future use
Computer Overview
 Input : accepts raw data from user
 Process: an act of performing arithmetic and logical
operation.
 Storage: an act of storing data and information
 Output : the result gained after processing
 Control and management of over diff. functions
Functions of Computer
System
Functions of Computer
System
INPUT
STORAGE
PROCESS OUTPUT
Speed: Preform numbers of task in a second. This is
called the speed of a computer.
Example of different units of speed are: millisecond,
microsecond, picosecond etc.
 Accuracy: Perform number of calculation in a fraction
of second correctly and accurately.(except GIGO)
Automatic: It carries out different tasks / work
automatically one instruction is given in the form of
computer program.
Features of Computer
System
Storage capacity: Store large number of data. The
quantity of data that a computer can store is the storage
capacity of that computer. Ex. KB, MB, GB, TB, etc.
 Reliable: It has a high degree as it carries out calculation
with high speed and accuracy.
 Diligent: Perform number of task without getting tired
unlike human beings
 Versatile: Used in variety of fields like education, health,
transportation, government etc. to do simple to complex
tasks.
Features of Computer
System contd..
 Cannot express its own ideas
 Needs power or electricity to work
 Lacks decision making power.
 Needs high skilled manpower to operate.
 Expensive to install and maintenance
Limitations of Computer
System
Application of Computer System
To write text, title,
heading , paragraph
etc. in a digital format
To type letter and
send emails
To play games
To listen music and
watch movies
To do complex set of
calculations, etc.
Application areas of
Computer System:
1. Schools, Colleges,
Universities
2. Health posts,
Polyclinic, Hospitals
3. Railways, Bus parks,
Airports, etc.
4. Government Offices

Editor's Notes

  1. Computer is an electronic device that accepts data from user, process the given data for meaningful information called output and saves the data and information for future use. The are different parts of computer working in system to make human work easier, faster and convenient. And such system as a whole is called computer system.
  2. In today’s presentation we are covering different topics and concepts related to computer system. We will discuss about the five major functions of computer system. Further we sill discuss about the pros and cons of using computer system. Similarly we will discuss why computer is considered as a special machine and is used in various areas of day to day work and different sectors.
  3. The world computer has been derived from Latin word computare which means to calculate. Computer is an electronic device that makes our work easier, faster and convenient. Computer system cannot work by itself but once instruction is given from user side, it can automatically handle all the information quickly and accurately. It process data given by user to meaningful output and can save the information for future use. We can also share our files among different people or users by using computer system.
  4. There are basically four major functions of computer system. They are i) Input ii) Processing iii) Output and iv) Storage. The fifth one is control and management of entire system of computer system. Input refers to accepting of raw data and instructions for operation in computer. Input devices such as keyboard, mouse, joystick, scanner, stylus, etc helps computer to accept data and instructions in the form of alphabets, letter, numbers and symbols etc form the user of computer system. Similarly Process or processing is the act of converting raw data provided by user to the meaningful information based on particular logic or arithmetic or instructions provided. CPU or central processing unit consisting of different parts such as Arithmetic Logical Unit, Control Unit and Memory Unit works as a processing device. Output is the meaningful information or result after data processing. User can get output in the form of soft copy or hard copy based on the output device one is using. Monitor, Printer, Digital camera, Plotter, etc are some of the popular output device. Once information is obtained by the user, one can save the data and information for future use and also save it with other users. For this purpose different storage device are used like: Hard disk, Flash drive or pen drive, CDs or DVDs, floppy drives and so on. For saving the instruction on computer different primary memory such as Random Access Memory (RAM) amd Read Only Memory (ROM) is used. For control and management of all the function of computer system, operating system or the system software plays a crucial role in computer system.
  5. The input, processing, storage and output are the continuous process in computer system. Every component is essential for the smooth functioning of computer system and get the optimum benefit.
  6. There are different features, applications or pros of computer system that make it a special machine. Some of them are Speed, Accuracy, Diligence, Versatile, Reliability, Automatic, Storage and many more. Speed relates to the quickness of fast approach of computer in solving complex set of problem in fraction of second. There are different unit of measurement on computers system based on processor of computer. Some of them are, millisecond, microsecond, picosecond, nanosecond, etc. Although computer can do complex set of calculation in very less amount of time it does not get tired unlike human beings. This feature is called Diligence. And it does not make any mistake unless incorrect information is provide which is called Accuracy. If we provide correct information to computer, it never make any mistake which is also called Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO).
  7. Moreover computer is an automatic machine i.e. once instruction and information is provided to computer in the form of program or software, computer can do its tasks automatically. Therefore we consider computer also as reliable machine. Moreover computers due to its various features are used in variety of fields to increase the performance and efficiency of work. Computer system are also used to store large amount of critical data and information for longer time and sharing them. Some of the storage capacity in computer system are in KB<MB<GB< TB and so on.
  8. Despite having ample of positive aspect of advantages of using computer system for improving efficiency and performance of our work, there are some of the disadvantages or cons of using it. Computer is an electronic device so without electricity computer cannot work. Similarly computer lacks decision making power and it cannot express it own ideas unlike human beings. On the other hand it needs instructions from human beings to operate for which skilled manpower are required. Moreover, it is highly expensive to install and maintain
  9. Due to the variety of special features of computer to increase work productivity and efficiency, computers has been used in variety of fields for day to day activities. Some of the most common application areas of computer includes: schools, colleges, universities, health posts, polyclinics, hospitals, railways, bus parks, airports, government offices, banks, finances and so on. Computer system are used to type letters and send email, to play games, listen music, watch movies, perform complex set of calculations, keep record of large no of employees an staffs and many more.
