During Elizabethan period
Elizabeth was a virgin queen so the name
Virginia
Sir Walter Raliegh sold his rights to
Plymouth company and London Company
The first settlement was in James town
(named after King James I)
Colonists purchased negro slaves to change
the place

In 1620 a group of puritans moved from
Port of Plymouth to America to establish
religious society.
They landed in New Plymouth – in 1691
the place was united with Massechusetts
From these grew – Providence, Rhode
Islands, New Haven

Lord Baltimore landed on Potomac river
and named it Maryland (named after
mother Mary)
There were more protestants in this
group
There was religious toleration. They
prayed as they wished.
7. Quacker colonistsQuacker colonists
In 1681 William Penn was given land by
Charles II.
He named it as Pennsylvania (Penn’s
Wood)
Protestants joined them and they found
Philadelphia
Quackers were law abiding. Penn leased
a land in colony of Delaware which is
now called New Jersey
8. Origin of New YorkOrigin of New York
Dutch colony was there in New
Amsterdam, near Hudson river. The
Duke of York fought with the Dutch and
got the place and renamed it as New
York.
