2. Edmund Spenser
Born in 1552, London, England.
Educated in merchant tailor’s school.
In 1579 published ‘The Shepherd’s Calender.
In 1590 brought out first three books of his most
famous work ‘The Faery Queen’.
Died in 1599 at the age of forty six.

3. Faery Queen
Introduction
Incomplete English epic poem by Edmund Spenser.
First half was published in 1590 and second half in 1596.
Original plan was writing 24 books, but could complete
only six books.
Spenser’s greatest and longest work.
One of the longest poems in English language.
Origin of verse form that come to be known as Spenserian
stanza.
Allegory of Tudor Dynasty and Elizabeth one.
4. Spenser’s intention for writing this book
Spenser states in his letter to Raleigh that
“the general end of the book is to fashion a
gentleman or noble person in virtuous and
gentle discipline
7. Poetic Structure
Written in Spenserian stanza.
Nine iambic lines – the first eight of them
five footed and the ninth a hexameter.
